Universal Jurisdiction: International and Municipal Legal Perspectives (Oxford Monographs in International Law)
Luc Reydams Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0199274266 |
Book Description
After centuries of near dormancy, the concept of 'universal jurisdiction' has suddenly become an important legal tool in the international campaign against impunity, most prominently in high-profile criminal trials. Among the legal questions raised by the exercise of universal jurisdiction, this book considers two. Under what conditions is a country investigating or prosecuting a foreigner for an extraterritorial offence internationally competent? What is the basis in municipal law for the exercise of universal jurisdiction? Reydams first identifies the international legal issues that arise when a State exercises extraterritorial jurisdiction generally, discerns the different doctrinal concepts of universal jurisdiction, and traces universal jurisdiction in current international texts such as multilateral conventions, resolutions of intergovernmental bodies, and official drafts and studies. He then brings together, and makes accessible in English, detailed accounts of universal jurisdiction in fourteen countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Senegal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Reydams' point of departure is the need for a context-sensitive analysis. The municipal laws are thus placed in the larger context of a country's views on criminal jurisdiction generally and the case discussions pay detailed attention to the factual and legal context of each case. This approach provides the reader with the reasons why the individual was brought to justice in a third country. The inclusion of (translated) texts of municipal statutes, of (translated) excerpts from judicial decisions, and of commentaries by legal scholars makes this volume an important resource for decision makers and legal practitioners, both national and international.Customer Reviews:

Plant Abiotic Stress (Biological Sciences)
Manufacturer: Blackwell Publishing Limited ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1405122382 |
Book Description
Over the past decade, our understanding of plant adaptation to environmental stress has grown considerably. This book focuses on stress caused by the inanimate components of the environment associated with climatic, edaphic and physiographic factors that substantially limit plant growth and survival. Categorically these are abiotic stresses, which include drought, salinity, non-optimal temperatures and poor soil nutrition. Another stress, herbicides, is covered in this book to highlight how plants are impacted by abiotic stress originating from anthropogenic sources. The book also addresses the high degree to which plant responses to quite diverse forms of environmental stress are interconnected, describing the ways in which the plant utilizes and integrates many common signals and subsequent pathways to cope with less favorable conditions. The book is directed at researchers and professionals in plant physiology, cell biology and molecular biology, in both the academic and industrial sectors.

Abiotic Stresses is divided into two sections. In the first section, you will find:
the general principles of breeding crops for stress resistance
genetic engineering and molecular biology procedures for crop improvement for stress environments
data on genome mapping and its implications for improving stress resistance in plants
information about breeding for resistance/tolerance to salinity, drought, flooding, metals, low nutrient availability, high/low temperatures
The second section of this timely resource focuses on the efforts of acknowledged specialists who concentrated their efforts on important individual crops, such as: wheat
barley
rice
maize
oilseed crops
cotton
tomato
This book fills a niche and interface in the available literature as it deals with all of the major stresses from a perspective of crop breeding, covering the latest advances in molecular breeding technology. Abiotic Stresses will help scientists and academics in botany, plant breeding, plant environmental stress studies, agriculture, and horticulture modify and improve breeding programs globally.

Ethylene Action in Plants
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540327169 |
Book Description
The plant hormone ethylene plays a prominent role among several intrinsic and extrinsic factors that control growth and physiology of plants. Its biological activity was discovered over a century ago. However, extensive studies on its mode of action came later.
To date, it is well documented that ethylene is a versatile signaling molecule that plays an important role in many physiological processes - like growth, senescence, fruit ripening, stress responses, symbioses, and photosynthesis. Molecular-genetic analyses have revealed mechanisms responsible for ethylene production, perception, and signal transduction. The present work brings into focus the recent developments on the biochemical, physiological, and molecular basis for ethylene action in plants.

Plant Responses to Abiotic Stress (Topics in Current Genetics)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540200371 |
Book Description
Environmental stresses represent the most limiting factors for agricultural productivity. Apart from biotic stress caused by plant pathogens, there are a number of abiotic stresses such as extremes in temperature, drought, salinity, heavy metals and radiation which all have detrimental effects on plant growth and yield. However, certain plant species and ecotypes have developed various mechanisms to adapt to such stress conditions. Recent advances in the understanding of these abiotic stress responses provided the impetus for compiling up-to-date reviews discussing all relevant topics in abiotic stress signaling of plants in a single volume. Topical reviews were prepared by selected experts and contain an introduction, discussion of the state of the art and important future tasks of the particular fields.
