5. Test to Verify -- confirm the choice made in step 4 is really a major contributor. If it isn't, the second most likely cause must be chosen and tested. This iterative procedure continues until a cause is verified as a major source of process variation.

6. Act to Implement a Solution -- produce a number of ideas for potential solutions and then select the one with the best chance of successfully resolving the problem. After confirming its effectiveness with a pilot study, develop a timetable for the solution's implementation.

7. Review and Revise the Solution -- the organization must maintain the improvement by ensuring that the solution remains effective over time and the problem stays solved forever.

As a long time proponent practitioner of statistical process controls (SPC) and process improvement I was astonished by what I didn't know after reading this set. The most significant revelation, and why this book is an essential resource for anyone involved with quality or process improvement, is the DOT*STAR process that drills down into causes.

DOT*STAR stands for Define [the problem], Observe [the process], Think [of possible causes], Select [the most probable cause], Test [to validate your assumptions], Act, Review and Revise. The approach is straightforward in concept, but in practice it employs an array of tools and techniques, all of which are common in quality improvement (statistical techniques such as histograms and Pareto charts, paired-comparisons, hypothesis testing and project management tools for implementation).

I like the way the book presents a coherent approach to applying familiar [to practitioners] tools and techniques to identify and eliminate root causes of process variation. Therein lies the true value of this material - it shows you how to leverage your existing quality and process improvement knowledge and skills to their fullest potential, and along the way gain a deeper understanding of SPC, process capability, and how to perform effective investigation and analysis to bring about process improvement.

This monograph gives a systematic presentation of ideas, methods and results of the modern statistical theory of open systems -- systems capable of exchanging matter, energy and information with the surrounding world. The resulting self-organization can lead to more sophisticated and advanced structures. Central to this work are the statistical criteria of self-organization. The feasibility of a unified description of kinetic, hydrodynamic and diffusion processes in passive and active macroscopic systems without resorting to the methods of perturbation theory is demonstrated. On this basis, a general definition of thermal flux is given in terms of the entropy gradient. Moreover, a consistent method for calculating both kinetic and hydrodynamic fluctuations is proposed. This approach is then used to construct a theory of classical and anomalous Brownian motion in nonlinear media. This theory makes it possible to treat in an original way the phenomenon of turbulence, and to propose a unified kinetic description of laminar and turbulent motion. The proposed methods are also applied to the statistical description of quantum macroscopic open systems. This provides answers as to whether or not the quantum mechanical description is complete, and whether or not there are hidden parameters in quantum mechanics. The book has no analogy in the existing literature. It is both a monograph and a textbook, and is based largely on the author's original research. The book will be useful to postgraduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics, mathematics, economics, sociology, and engineering.

I am very happy with the Planispere Deluxe, I know when I buy the best product, you get the best results, So I purchased the deluxe.
It takes a bit of practice along with the enclosed manual, to set up a time and date to view the night sky, otherwise its as simple as A, B, C.
I`m looking forward to purchase a manual showing the locations of the planets for the years 2007 to ?.

Many many objects available and so simple to use. My only regret is I maybe should have got the smaller version. The print is also quite small, but a good red light cures that. Extremely helpful for the newcomer.

High quality pays off in the field.......2005-09-15

This item is constructed of a tough yet flexible plastic that is dew-proof and easy to use in the dark. I love the detail, but others with poor eyesight, when it comes to small print, won't like it. It's a trade-off that is fine with me, because more info greatly outweighs big type for this 20/20 user. ;) The complaint about the constellation lines being red is valid, but I've found that I can still see them under my small red LED lamp, but they are faint. As the earlier complaint points out, there is a black and white copy on the back that you can use with no problem under any color light - just flip it over! Great product. Get this one if you're in the market and you plan to use it outdoors with a telescope or binoculars.

This planisphere is a hit.......2005-02-16

This planisphere is truly remarkable. Yes, after reading the previous review, the red lines connecting the principle stars of the constellations can be somewhat cumbersome to the novice. (But, turn the map around and there on the back of the disk, you have a complete black and white map of the front plotted down to the sixth magnitude intended to be used with red light.) This planisphere is designed for the more experienced observer, but it still can be used by people just learning their way around as well. The revolvable indicator is very useful to plot and assess the location of objects not plotted on the chart relative to your local horizon. If there were to be changes for a second edition planisphere, I would like to see the map extended southward to include the 30 degree north latitude zone, and being a deep sky observer myself, perhaps in addition to the messier catalog, the top 300 objects on the NGC catalog plotted on the map as well. Contrary to other reviews, there is still considerable idle space in many areas of this map, especially the southern half of the map area, for plotting additional deep sky objects. Otherwise, I highly recommend this planisphere for any astronomer's reference library.
