Modern systems theory provides a new paradigm for the analysis of society. In this volume, Niklas Luhmann, its leading exponent, explores its implications for our understanding of law. Luhmann argues that current thinking about how law operates within a modern society is seriously deficient. In this volume he lays out the theoretical and methodological tools that, he argues, can advance our understanding of contemporary society and, in particular, of the identity, performance, and function of the legal system within that society. In systems theory, society is its communications: they are its empirical reality; the items that can be observed and studied. Systems theory identifies how communications operate within a physical world and how different sub-systems of communication operate alongside each other. In this volume, Luhmann uses systems theory to address a question central to legal theory: what differentiates law from other parts of society? However, unlike conventional legal theory, this volume seeks to provide an answer in terms of a general social theory: a methodology that answers this question in a manner applicable not only to law, but also to all the other complex and highly differentiated systems within modern society, such as politics, the economy, religion, the media, and education. This truly sociological approach offers profound insights into the relationships between law and all of these other social systems.

One out of five people in the world today lives subject to Islamic law, but stereotypes of rigid doctrine or harsh punishment obscure an understanding of the values and style of reasoning that characterize everyday lslamic adjudication. By considering its larger social and cultural context Islamic law is shown to be a kind of common law system: justice is sought through a careful assessment of persons, more than facts, and justice resides not in equality but in a quest for equivalence. Through ordinary court proceedings the style of reasoning is seen to be embedded in a set of cultural assumptions, thus rendering the study of Islamic legal proceedings a window on Muslim society generally. Using data ranging from the courts of North Africa to the treatment of Islam in American courts, from a reinterpretation of the Prophet's sociological jurisprudence to the analysis of Islamic concepts of responsibility and trust these essays demonstrate the enduring appeal of Islamic law in the lives of everyday adherents.

The revolutions of France, the United States, and England each inspired dreams of creating legal institutions that did not depend on specialist intermediaries, and, in different ways, provoked attacks on the existing rules and government of the legal profession more widespread and severe than at any other time in their history. These dreams came to naught and, sooner or later, the professions recovered, but their revolutionary experiences nevertheless had a lasting impact on their subsequent organization, and help to explain why three previously convergent professions should diverge as their societies industrialised. The social upheaval of industrialization may also help to explain many of their peculiarities down to the present day: why, for instance, French advocates imposed such strict ethical obligations on themselves, from which they were only released by the state in 1992, why American lawyers should be the first to be at ease in the market, but faced intractable problems of professional self-government, why two professions should emerge in England, both with a high degree of self-government, and both long indifferent to law schools and to the market for legal services. Since lawyers were the first occupation to organize as a profession, this insightful comparative inquiry then asks what their experience might tell us about other organized occupations in these three societies, and the difference between their educational institutions, their division of labour, their civil societies and lesser forms of government, and about the ways they have been stratified and formed classes.

In April 1990, the space shuttle Discovery carried the Hubble Space Telescope to an altitude of some 600 kilometers above the Earth, where it has since been delivering images of the distant heavens to scientists below. Despite disappointing early results--the telescope's mirror and camera were revealed to have significant flaws, which were quickly repaired--Hubble has yielded extraordinary views, including stunning images of the birth, death, and occasional misfortunes of stars and close-up details of our planetary neighbors (such as views of the retreating Martian polar ice cap throughout the summer, exposing the great sand dunes that lie beneath, and of a Neptune beset by upper-atmospheric storms).

Good but not great.......2005-02-22
This is a good book of hubble shots but not what I was hoping to find. I think Cosmos book put out recently has better pics than this does. It does give information and stuf in it but it isn't all that comprehensive.

The book comes in two-versions. One is a paperback and the other is a hardback, which I own. I would definately call the hardback a coffee table book. Large format photos, in a book that opens nicely for great viewing
Disappointing.......2002-11-25
The layout of the book was disappointing. Instead of being a coffee table book containing mostly the latest, prettiest photos, much space was wasted on perfunctory texts containing little new information to space buffs, and the layout of the pictures was poorly judged, in my opinion, with several oddly-angled pictures splayed across the pages. There were too few large-scale photos, and most had been published in popular magazines.
Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.......2002-08-31
This is a lovely collection of the best of the Hubble photographs that had been done at the time of publication. Although they have been seen many times, and in many different formats, this book puts them all together in one place. It's too bad that some of the more recent spectacular Hubble shots weren't included, but the author's deadline was probably the culprit; it wasn't as a result of deliberate omission. This is, perhaps, a "coffee table book", but unlike most books that fall into that category, this one is paperback and very affordable. I can't wait for Mark Voit to do a Volume 2!
A Must for School Libraries!.......2002-07-03
While this book is not a comprehensive account of everything the Hubble Telescope has revealed to us, it is a wonderful and quite inexpensive book, which belongs in the astronomy section of every school library in the country. The text is clear and concise, and the quality of the photographic reproductions is absolutely top-notch. What I love about the book the most, however, is how well it gives the reader a sense for the absolute vastness of space.
