A great book if you are ready to think about your retirement.......2007-09-13

I am a 55+ someone who is getting serious about retirement in the next several years. I really enjoyed reading through each of the main sections of this well-organized book. It is divided into 3 main components - Life, Health, Money (as the title indicates) and each starts out with ways to get you thinking about how that section affects your personal situation. As you progress through the section you end up with a place to fill out a check-list of things you can do as next steps to complete your planning.

Since I am a bit of a planner, I had already done much in the way of health and money preparation, so these sections helped me confirm my existing strategies. However, the Life section was relatively new territory for me, as I have not zoned in yet on how I will spend much of my free time in retirement. The book really helped me by challenging my pre-conceived notions on what I might be doing, and made several great suggestions on how to think this through. Since each section of the book can stand on its own you can tune up the parts of your strategy you feel need the most attention and use other parts as refresher or confirmation as needed.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes the personal guide approach to figuring out things and is willing to spend the hours required to work through the content and make their own plans. There is plenty of rich content there to help anyone.

This study addresses purchasing challenges faced by companies buying commercial software components. The purpose is to find out how we can understand the purchasing challenges in software component business. First we develop pre-understanding based on knowledge on competitive supplier relationships and competitive bidding. This is elaborated empirically through a qualitative case study. We contribute to prior literature by concluding that the nature of software component supplier relationships is influenced by the object and costs of exchange. We also argue that, in markets like software component business, it is essential to pay attention to the development of the whole supply market.

This volume is an extremely clear summary of basic theory and comparative techniques for computational resolution of fluid mechanics problems. Code examples are clear and extremely helpful to practitioners trying to produce useful models.

Very good book for CFD.......2000-07-19

This is more advanced book for CFD (comparing with the volume I). More specifice topics were talked about in this book. It is a very good book for beginner, also a good reference.

Excellent books for entering the C.F.D feild.......1998-12-27

The reader should be familer with the general techniques of Computaional Science. This book does an excellent review of thoes basic techniques which are basic for computational fluid dynamics. I just finished reading it and am Now starting on the second volume. I am doing a computer Simulation of Ship wakes and this book is I think nesessary reading before a researcher dives in to the mass of research papers published in this field.

This book presents some fundamentals of CFD based on straightforward mathematical tools giving fast access to very interesting general behaviours of PDE families. Apart from the introduction of basic concepts, finite differences and finite volume discretizations, the heart of the book lies in chapters 4,6,7 where a clear and systematic methodology to go from PDE to ODE to O(delta)E is presented. The classical stabilities associated to the most famous time steppings are presented. Some other features such as multigrid, splitting, and upwind dissipations are presented in the same clear setting. The book is very well written, clear and straightforward. I hope more advanced topics will be also included in further editions!

Outdated.......2002-01-28

CFD is a rapidly evolving area. The advances made in the last couple of decades are quite significant. This book describes the techniques that were state-of-the art many years ago. The extra chapters in part II of the book do not cover the new techniques in sufficient depth. Therefore it is my opinion that the book has only historical value. I regreted buying it and I propose the book by Ferziger & Peric for the engineer/scientist who wants to seriously get involved with CFD.

Great reference book.......2000-06-18

This book is an expanded version of Roache's classical book on CFD. It addresses simulation of incompressible (stream-function and primitive-variable formulation) and compressible flow. The level of detail of the presentation makes the book adequate for beginners and experienced CFD practitioners alike. New material include topics on grid generation and multigrid. Although some of this new material is convered on relatively short chapters, the book remains a very solid reference.

Combustion is an old technology, which at present provides about 90% of our worldwide energy support. Combustion research in the past used fluid mechanics with global heat release by chemical reactions described with thermodynamics, assuming infinitely fast reactions. This approach was useful for stationary combustion processes, but it is not sufficient for transient processes like ignition and quenching or for pollutant formation. Yet pollutant formation during combustion of fossil fuels is a central topic and will continue to be so in the future. This book provides a detailed and rigorous treatment of the coupling of chemical reactions and fluid flow. Also, combustion-specific topics of chemistry and fluid mechanics are considered and tools described for the simulation of combustion processes.

The actual fourth edition presents a completely restructured book: Mathematical Formulae and derivations as well as the space-consuming reaction mechanisms have been replaced from the text to appendix. A new chapter discusses the impact of combustion processes on the earth’s atmosphere, the chapter on auto-ignition is extended to combustion in Otto- and Diesel-engines, and the chapters on heterogeneous combustion and on soot formation appear heavily revised.

This book is not a complete guide but is a good self-learning help.
It can be also used as a quick reference.
A good starting point for combustion studies. Then other books are required if complete treatment is required.
Small but nice part of useful mathematics in appendix. Not a rigorous treatment but quick explanation of some topics related to CFD.

Combustion modeling review.......2000-04-08

This is a very good book. It format is very succictinct and as such spares no space for unecessary content. This give the narrative a somewhat terse style. It must be remembered that the science of combustion wrestles with some formidable concepts; such as turbulent flow, reduced reaction mechanisms for complex chemical reactions, fluid flow and heat transfer. This is not a book for those who are easily frightened by close typed differential equations. This book however, is an excellent introduction to the science of combustion, and contains a detailed and upto date biblography, pointing the interested reader in the right direction. It also contains one of the most complete tables of kinetic data for combustion reactions, I have seen in published literature. My one regret is that there is no companion volume of solved examples that could be used by an unassisted, but interested student. Read in conjunction with Smith/Missen, computation of chemical equilibrium, and Anderson's excellent introduction to Computational fluid dynamics, and the world of this facinating and most important field opens up.
