Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A must-have for the FRM exam.......2006-11-03

Jorion's book is indispensable (and, in my experience, sufficient) when preparing for the FRM exam; if you are taking it, think no more. An added bonus is the impressive number of typos and errors to test your knowledge :)

5 out of 5 stars very satisfied.......2006-07-30

good to have a wide range of subjects in one handbook. it seems I don't need the other library for my everyday work

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for what it claims.......2006-05-05

The people who have written reviews primarily have gripes that they didn't pass. They must have thought the book was THE ONLY RESOURCE they would need. I used this book and I did pass the exam. It wasn't the only resource I used though.

The publishers of the book even claim that using only this book will not help you pass the exam. It is an OVERVIEW text. It is a primer to help you delve into the material. This book will not substitute the large amount of qualitative reading and equation memorization that you'll need to do in order to pass.

I give it a 4 mainly because the book does what it claims and because some of the more negative reviews are too far-fetched. Remember to buy the version that applies to your test year.

1 out of 5 stars I Wish I Hadn't.......2006-03-30

This book cost me the FRM last year. I made it the center of my study program. The book's writing is atrocious; there are gaps in what is covered; and there are many errors and misstatements. I wasted six weeks struggling with this book. When I finally realized my mistake, it was too late to rescue my study program, and I failed the exam. I am very disillusioned with Jorion and GARP. This shoddy, overpriced paperback makes me think they are in it just for the money. This year, I have signed up for the CFA exam instead. So far, I have been very impressed with their study materials.

    Book Description

The Professional's Handbook of Financial Risk Management is a major reference work in finance. A complete practical reference book covering all aspects of financial risk management including an in-depth look at operational risk management, regulation, risk-based capital, and risk adjusted performance measurement. The book focuses on practical financial risk management techniques and solutions, and is designed to guide the risk professional step-by-step through the implementation of a firm-wide risk management framework.

This book covers the various roles of the risk management function. Rather than describing every possible role in exhaustive detail, the authors have provided a story line for each of the discussed topics, including practical issues that a risk manager needs to consider when tackling the subject, possible solutions to difficulties that might be encountered, background knowledge that is essential to know, and more intricate practices and techniques that are being used.

By providing these fundamentals, the novice risk professional can gain a thorough understanding of the topic in question while the more experienced professional can use some of the more advanced concepts within the book. Thus the book can be used to broaden your own knowledge of the risk world, both by familiarizing yourself with areas in which you lack experience and by enhancing your knowledge in areas that you already have expertise.

All authors are leaders in their field who between them have the expertise and knowledge, both practical and theoretical, to produce this definitive risk management guide.

The editors of this book, Marc Lore and Lev Borodovsky, are senior financial risk managers at Sanwa Bank (International) London, and Credit Suisse First Boston, USA respectively. They also run The Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), the industry association for financial risk management practitioners and researchers.

Endorsed by GARP - Global Association of Risk Professionals
Authored and edited by leading financial markets risk professionals
International in coverage; the concepts and methods covered are not specific to any country or institution, but rather to the risk management profession as a whole

5 out of 5 stars Great for FRM Exam.......2003-04-21

I used this book extensively for the Financial Risk Management exam and I am pleased to say passed and am a certified FRM now. The contents of the book cover the syllabus of the exam well.

2 out of 5 stars It's NOT worth it and It's not worth the money.......2002-02-17

Well, what can I say. I am extremely disappointed and really upset. I want my money back. !!!They ripped me off!!!. I bought this book because Lev Borodovsky is the Chairman of the GARP, but unfortunately he didn't write the book. He didn't developed any theme. He is just a seller who recommends the purchase of the book. He plays a decoy role. It's a dishonest attitude towards the readers and risk management professionals. The professional's handbook of financial risk is no more than a dictionary, a big dictionary on risk management. As a reader said: a summary. There is NO huge and depth development of each subject. In this handbook the themes are presented in a simply and tiny way

One reader said, this book is for consumers who work in the field of financial risk management. Well, I work as a professional risk management consultant and derivatives lecturer. So, I can use this book as a simple dictionary. It doesn't add anything. I prefer Risk Management by Michel Crouhy as a better professional handbook on risk management. With respect to VaR, Jorion's Value at Risk is tremendously and immensely much better.

The second theme: Measuring volatility, ARCH models and GARCH specifically are terribly bad developed, pitiable and vague. There is no useful application. A great, objective, practical discussion on GARCH, estimating volatility and correlations are discussed in Options, Futures & other derivatives by John C. Hull. Believe it or not.!! Every book must have a balance between a theoretical and practical content, let's say 50-50. Borodovsky's Financial risk management has a 90% conceptual (not theoretical) and 10% practical. When I say practical, I mean effortless and unclear exercises, not professional solved cases and applications of the real world. Back testing and stress testing themes present a deficient, incomplete and poor development. A Montecarlo simulation very unsatisfactory and pathetic.

The professional's handbook of Financial risk management is a rip-off. Definitely a rip-off!!!. This book should cost $40.00 dollars. It's just a dictionary. It deserves 2 star.

5 out of 5 stars From an undergraduate perspective.......2001-12-15

As the previous reviewers have mentioned, this book is most useful for consumers who work in the field of Financial risk management. I however am studying a course in this field at University and what i can say is that this book as bumped up my essay grades.

The reference books i work with aren't as comprehensive, upto-date or as well researched as this book. If you want great examples, useful figures and information this is where you should look.

If you're a student and have alot of spare cash then this is for you, alternatively as reviewers who work in this field have said- its worth the money. Be warned that although the lay-out is logical and well presented, it isn't in large fonts with pictures and colours like most college text books.

5 out of 5 stars The Professional's Handbook of Financial Risk Management.......2000-05-12

Excellent & Comprehensive - This handbook, while expensive, is an excellent, up-to-date summary of all major areas of risk management. It is a must have for risk managers and a very useful addition to any financial analyst's bookshelf. It provides a comprehensive overview of market risk, credit risk, appropriate VaR models, operational risk management, regulation, risk-based capital, liquidity risk, and risk adjusted performance measurement. It focuses on practical financial risk management techniques, and is designed to guide the risk professional, or others who would like to know more about risk management, step-by-step through the implementation of a firm-wide risk management framework.

Risk professionals will get information on the latest standards that represent best practice in the risk industry. The book is a good balance between practice and theory, with the risk practitioner in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but a definite MUST READ.......2000-03-15

I just received a copy of this book and briefly reviewed the content. While I must say that this is an expensive publication in the field I nevertheless regard it as being value for money. Particularly useful for Consultants and Professionals (not so much Academics) this title is about application and covers an extremely wide area (from derivatives basics to VAR - market risk, credit risk, also Operational Risk Measurement and Risk Adjusted Profitability Management) and puts all the techniques available into "a big picture". Definetly 5 Stars !

Savas provides a complete guide to privatization--the background, theory, and practical reality. This book explains what, why, when, and how to privatize. Contracting services, using franchises and vouchers, divesting government-owned businesses, privatizing infrastructure through public-private partnerships, reforming education, privatizing the welfare state, and overcoming opposition to privatization are discussed in detail. In addition, Savas provides hundreds of examples from local, state, and federal government in the U.S. and other countries.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars media wants to burn this and suppress it.......2002-03-01

Is awesome to see ideas outside the mainstream. Most people today like monarchy. Kings are obsolete. Let people do as they please and the inefficiency will be squirted free like bad zits. Rmoving the rules that govern is privatization. Privatizing education alone would lead to much smarter people. Let all the rules that restrain people from creating good go away. Watch life improve. think different. Think freedom of action from the rules of the king.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book anti-rules--media will want to burn it.......2002-03-01

Being a real rebel is thinking different. Thats what this author does. Get rid of rules of the goverment. Let private owners decide. These ways of releasing people lead to hugely improved results. Awesome read. Media will want to burn this book. It explodes all collectivist works.

              2 out of 5 stars Pro-Privatization.......2000-06-06

I will begin by stating that I have a major problem with the book. Savas skews his own statistics in order to push readers into supporting the privatization of our nation's public sector. His book focuses entirely on the private sector's greater efficiency over the public sector without addressing many other important issues. If you want a very one sided book that is pro-privatization, then buy this one. If, however, you would like a book that seeks to enlighten readers with facts and allows them to make their own decision on the matter, then find another book.

A deepening crisis in accountability in developing democracies has triggered much debate on accountability and the mechanisms needed for overcoming deficiencies of democracy. This book analyzes a wide variety of contemporary efforts to reform accountability systems in developing countries. It makes an original contribution to the debate by dealing with a variety of novel approaches to accountability and it combines these approaches in both a systematic and analytic fashion. The book also includes case study material on successful accountability initiatives.

                  Book Description

What is good government? Why do some governments fail? How do you implement political accountability in practice? What incentives do you need to put in place to ensure that politicians and public servants act in the public interest and not their own? These questions and many more are addressed in Timothy Besley's intriguing Lindahl lectures. Economic analyses of government usually divide into two broad camps. One which emphasizes government as a force for public good that can regulate markets, distribute resources and generally work towards improving the lives of its citizens. The other sees government as driven by private interests, susceptible to those with the power to influence its decisions and failing to incentivize its officials to act for the greater public good. This book adopts a middle way between the two extremes, the Publius approach, which recognizes the potential for government to act for the public good but also accepts the fact that things often go wrong. It shares the view that there are certain institutional preconditions for effective government but then proceed to examine exactly what those preconditions are. Timothy Besley emphasises that it is not just about designing an appropriate institutional framework but also about understanding the way incentives work and the process by which the political class is selected.

                    Book Description

The economic crisis of 1997 called East Asia's economic miracle into question and generated widespread criticism of the regions developmental models. However, the crisis did little to alter the growing economic integration of the region which is being forged through American, Japanese and Chinese firms who have created cross-border production networks - led by multinational corporations which span the entire value-chain in a number of industries. This book addresses the changing nature of high-tech industries in Asia, particularly in the electronics sector, where these networks are increasingly designed to foster and to exploit the regions highly heterogenous technology, skills and know-how.

                        Book Description

This intellectually bold but accessible book seeks to go beyond limitations of the reigning neoclassical and institutional paradigms in explaining the organization of economic activity. It does this by construing "non-economic" factors such as institutions, cultures, and social practices as conventions, which coordinate economic actors by defining specific "frameworks of economic action." In these conventional frameworks, the standard distinction between economic and non-economic no longer exists. The authors explore in detail four basic frameworks--or "possible worlds of production"--which underpin the mobilization of economic resources, the organization of production systems and factor markets, patterns of economic decision making, and forms of profitability. The case studies examine how these possible worlds act to support innovative production complexes in a variety of sectors in several countries.

Storper and Salais show that economic actors coordinate actions with one another and interpret what others are doing in ways that are constructed by convention. The principal challenge to economic policy today, they argue, is to reconcile internally coherent conventions with the external tests of product and financial markets, which tend increasingly to escape jurisdictional borders. There is no single model of growth and efficiency that brings these two sides together around the world today, even in narrowly defined product markets. If policies are to deal effectively with an increasingly unified global system of flows of commodities, money, and people, they must be aware of the diverse, economically viable action frameworks found in different industries, regions, and nations.

                              Book Description

For over a generation, demographic developments have had a crucial bearing on the economic, social and political situation in a number of Middle Eastern countries. Two societies in particular, the Palestinian and the Egyptian, have seen the weft and warp of their fabric significantly affected by natural increase and migration.

This study provides a general outline of Palestinian population growth between 1948 and 1987 and then focuses on the town of Nablus for a detailed analysis of the main aspects of Palestinian migration and high rates of natural increase. The author shows how the recession that struck the Arab oil economies in the early 1980s, by slowing down the migratory movement, shut off the valve that had afforded the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza relief from economic pressures. He also analyses how Jordan, in coping with the resulting demographic and economic pressures, adopted an antinatalist policy despite powerful political and social forces working against such a programme.
