        Book Description

Is judicial review constitutionally required or even authorized? Can it be said whether the federal courts exercise this power with the consent of the electorate? Sosin addresses these challenging questions in the broad context of the Anglo-American historical experience. He examines the evolution of courts of judicature and legislatures and the contests for power that were waged from the seventeenth to eighteenth century. The origins of the English court system and the establishment of common law are first described. The author traces the rise in judicial and parliamentary power that occurred with the erosion of the "royal prerogative" and discusses the constitutional and legal heritage that provided the framework for law, courts, and legislatures in colonial America. Following an examination of political, legislative, and legal development during the colonial period, Sosin looks at the philosophical and ideological controversies that influenced the framing of the Constitution, particulary the conflicting views of the proper relationship between the legislature and judiciary. Despite the emphatic opposition voiced by some framers to giving judges the power to overturn legislative action by ruling on the "constitutionality" of federal laws, the Supreme Court was able to declare itself the final arbiter and "ultimate interpreter" of the Constitution as early as the first decade of the nineteenth century. The author's analysis indicates that the Court's assumption of the power of judicial review was neither inevitable politically nor the logical result of the founders desire to limit government and protect the rights of individuals against interferences by public authority. Echoing early English and American political figures, Sosin asks whether this expanded, arbitrary judicial power can be considered appropriate in a representative democracy. The product of meticulous research and careful historical analysis, this provocative study will be relevant reading for a variety of courses in American government, political science, and history.

*** In this sweet little story collection, past and present are bridged by a common thread of love and revealed secrets. Granddaughters learn lessons about love from their grandmothers' recollections of the past, of loves they had in the WW II era. The stories are connected by email messages between the three grandmothers, but they do have a common theme. Debbie Macomber's entry that opens the anthology is the strongest of the three, however, each one is a sweet, safe read for book lovers of all ages to enjoy. ***

          3 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2006-02-07

Of the three stories, I enjoyed the one by Katherine Stone the best. It was very sweet and the characters were cute. The bit about the grandmother's eyesight seemed sort of random, though... kind of like the author wanted to just throw in some information that people should know about cataracts.
The story by Debbie Macomber sort of seemed... a little dated, I guess. As I read it, I sort of wondered if it had been written years ago and was being republished, with a few updates to accomodate for technological advances (cell phones, email). It was just an impression I got from the characters, I think.
I have no real complains about the Lois Faye Dyer story. It was fine.
All in all, an okay book, but not a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars three terrific Washington State novellas .......2006-02-01

"5-B Poppy Lane" by Debbie Macomber. In Cedar Cove, Washington, anti-war protester Ruth Shelton has been exchanging letters and email with USMC Sergeant Paul Gordon. However, he is coming home from Afghanistan on leave and wants to meet her in person. She has doubts because of his occupation

"Liberty Hall" by Katherine Stone. Former sergeant Jake Morrissey visits his friend Dan at the University of Washington Medical Center's rehabilitation Medicine Department where his brother in arms is getting an artificial leg installed. Jake meets English Professor Chloe Abbott whose group the Seattle's Women's Club has donated much of the medical equipment. They are attracted to one another form the start, but someone with a grudge plans to use her as a throw away pawn to get at Jake.

"The Apple Orchard" by Lois Faye Dyer. In Sarah's Orchard, Washington though he knows he will be punished by his mother's latest boyfriend, Nick rescues the toddler. Elizabeth's grandparents Charles and Clara are grateful. Years later, an adult Nick returns to Sarah's Orchard where to his shock Clara knows him instantly as Elizabeth's hero. He stays there basking in the grandparent-like love of Charles and Clara. When Charles dies he remains there for Clara. When Elizabeth returns home, she and her hero fall in love but he keeps his military experience secret from her so she has doubts.

These three terrific Washington State novellas star heroic military men and realistic women with doubts about a relationship with a soldier/veteran. The key to the tales is that diverse opinions on the Global War Against Terrorism is treated with respect and not wrapped inside phony for or against patriotic fervor while honoring the soldier.

Farjeon is a remarkable writer with a wonderful imagination. She uses the tone and the style of British fairy tales to create her own stories with great skill and charm. It just occurred to me that she should be required reading for scriptwriters of TV evening soaps, with her ability to tell stand-alone short stories within an encompassing, ongoing narrative.

Like the other reviewers, I read this book and its companion, "Martin Pippin in the Daisy Field," when I was a child, probably pre-teen. They were my mother's books, and I discovered them in the cellar. Happy day!

The stories in this book are for older children, and probably would appeal more to girls. They're sophisticated enough for adults, however, and stay in the memory. I think they'd be wonderful read aloud to 10 to 12-year-olds.

Like the rest of the reviewers, I wish this book and "...Daisy Field" were still in print. I'd buy multiple copies and distribute them far & wide.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical, whimsical writing and stories unlike any others.......1999-01-09

I agree with the other two reviewers. I too read this book and 'Martin Pippin in the Daisy Field' when I was a teenager. The stories are unlike any others--there is an amusing one about a little pig who ends up getting the magic gift of forever staying thin(and therefore ummarketable!)In a totally different vein, there is a beautifully crafted story about a woman who appears good and lovely on the surface but has evil in her soul--not very original, you say? Ah, but the way she is ultimately saved by the man who is strong enough to literally root out the blackness is very different. The descriptions of the West Country in England have made me long to go there--maybe one day I will.

5 out of 5 stars It have to be reprinted!.......1998-07-11

I am a Japanese woman and I read this book again and again since when I was around 10. The auther's other books which are mentioned in the previous review are all still well selling here in Japan. You can find her books in almost every libraries.

Ever since I was fascinated by the exoticism of the Farjeon's good old British atmosphare, I've been longing to read these books in the original text.

I was very disappointed to find out that most of her books are out of print even in her own country. It is a shame. There are gems of short stories which gives very good influence to the children's fantasy. It is also ideal for the story telling text.

Thanks to the Amazon.com, I could find 'The little book room" but Martin pippin series...

Please do reprint, it's a very charming magical book.

4 out of 5 stars a summary of storyline, correction of age level.......1998-03-18

Elanor Farjeon was a gifted writer from a family of writers. She wrote the poem that became the lyrics to "Morning has broken", a Cat Stevens hit. Her childrens books seem to be mostly unknown in this day and age, which is a shame, since they are full of the kind of big ideas girls crave- Deathless love, Maidens Forlorn; and whimsey and fairies and the bucolic setting of the Suffolk Downs.

Martin Pippin is a plowboy. As he walks one morning, he meets a love-sick man who begs him to rescue the fair maiden of his heart. the girl is locked in a wellhouse in the middle of an apple orchard, and guarded by twelve other girls, all of whom hate men, and all of whom have names beginning with "J". Martin hides in the orchard for thirteen days, charms one maiden per day with a love story, a song and the answer to her quarrel with men. A classic tales-within-a-tale with a few gentle surprises at the end, and sure to charm the adolescent girl who collects unicorns.

Needless to say, a collection of stories about Earthly and Divine love don't really qualify as baby/easy-reader stuff. I recommend that this book be changed to Adolescent Girl.

Elanor Farjeon wrote many other books as well, all of which re out of print. "Martin Pippin in The Daisy Field" is a group of bedtime storys in the same format, told to thirteen little girls in, of course, a daisy field. I think the stories are better than the "Apple Orchard", and not a love story among them. "The Little Bookroom" is another collection of short stories. And there are two rewritings of fairy tales, novel length. One is "The silver Curlew" and I think it is Rumplestiltskin (It's been a long time since I've seen them). The other is "The Glass Slipper"-you'ld never guess that it's a retelling of Cinderella! Anyone would think that we have enough versions of that story bouncing around the universe, but this version is irrisistable to the sort of person who treasures the whimsy of "Winnie-The-Pooh" and wishes Milne had grown up. My daughter is nine and nearly ready to appreciate the lilting voice that this author speaks in.Please, Mr Houghto-Mifflin, Mr Avon, Somebody at Puffin, reprint these books!

On a day perfect for apple picking, the bunny family heads to Long Hill Orchard. Mr. Miller takes them to the trees on his wobbly farm wagon and tells them all sorts of fun facts about fall's favorite fruit. Nancy Elizabeth Wallace has painstakingly glued in place simple cut-paper shapes to give her illustrations their bold colors and three-dimensional quality. Her story includes a recipe, an apple-print project, apple sayings, and an apple song for parents and children to share.

5 out of 5 stars A picture book with facts and activities rolled into one.......2002-07-17

This is a great picture book with interesting cutout paper illustrations. It is a story of a (rabbit) family that goes apple picking in the fall. This is a New England tradition that I have enjoyed so the book is especially appealing to me. The family goes picking apples and the farmer goes along. The farmer explains some factual things such as how many seeds are usually in the apples and how they grow the trees from rootstock.

Each member of the family wants a different type of apple for a different purpose. The family cooks applesauce and the recipe is included. There is a song with music notations and directions for doing an apple printing craft.

This family enjoys learning about the apples and there are some factual pictures such as how the apple tree is grafted onto a root and a labeling of the parts of a bisected apple. I especially like how the story illustrates the children and parents as being interested in learning about the apples.

This is a fun storybook, a good mixture of story and facts with a few activities! This would make a great book for preschool or Kindergarten teaches, perfect for reading in the autumn or combining with a real trip to pick apples!

5 out of 5 stars Apples, Apples, Apples.......2001-10-11

This is an amazingly illustrated book. The pictures are very captivating to young children.
The book not only offers a story, but great apple activities as well.
As a childcare provider, I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A picture story and nonfiction in one book!.......2001-02-19

This appealing book of pictures created using papercutouts tells The story of the bunny family's outing to the apple orchard. All the aspects of picking your own apples are presented. They get to ride out to the orchard on a wagon pulled by a tractor, have to choose which varieties to pick, and the farmer weighs the apples in the end. Information about apples is presented through the apple farmer. At home applesauce is made (recipe included), an apple craft is featured and an apple song is included as well. Should be perfect for before or after your next trip to the orchard or anytime of year. I think little ones will enjoy it as much as I did!

Job well done on directions for recipes for beginners. All ingredients lists are easy to follow. Availability of ingredients-excellent. Pictures would be helpful but descriptive instructions are complete enough.

This book is a perfect introduction to one of New England's best autumn traditions. Diane Mayr's lively text is appealing, and loaded with information. Her enthusiasm for the topic is obvious, and will be passed on to her readers. Parents, teachers, librarians, and kids will love this - and learn from it as well!

                5 out of 5 stars Very Real!.......2004-08-23

We have an apple orchard in Indiana, and a librarian friend who has the fun job of reading and categorizing new books. She came across this one and said, "This is one of the best books I've seen for young readers that best fits the orchard. It even mentions the bees, limiting the use of chemicals, picking them by hand, and has an illustration of the apples being separated on a conveyer belt, it mentions cold storage, and has a big red barn for the store! I would swear that this writer or illustrator has been to CLO and used it as a springboard for creating the book!" We recommend it to people to read with their children before visiting the orchard. www.countylineorchard.com
