    Book Description

For multinational corporations (MNCs), there is arguably no more important operational function that affects all areas of manufacturing, marketing, management, and finance as international transfer pricing--the practicing of supplying products or services across borders from one part of the organization to another. Its complexity is compounded by the impact of e-commerce, speeding the flow of goods and services; "intangible" assets, such as intellectual property, whose value is difficult to quantify; and the activites of policymakers around the world to update their tax laws and regulations, in efforts to close loopholes that have historically encouraged tax avoidance. In Critical Concerns in Transfer Pricing Policy and Practice, Wagdy Abdallah provides an in-depth overview of these recent trends and developments, and considers their implications for the management of MNCs. In particular, he discusses methods for pricing transferred goods and services in the e-commerce era and analyzes the most recent regulation reforms in such countries as Germany, Mexico, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands. Anticipating increased scrutiny of MNC transfer pricing practices from governments and other external stakeholders, Abdallah outlines a set of practical recommendations for creating a successful transfer pricing system that maximizes value for the company while remaining sensitive to local policies in all of the countries in which it operates.

      Book Description

Having an accurate assessment of company expenditures is a key to staying in business. Activity-based management (ABM) is the only system that offers the tools to correctly assess the outflow involved in a tightly knit supply chain and enables understanding not only of the total cost of ownership (TCO), but also how these costs should be allocated. Supply Chain Cost Control Using Activity-Based Management discusses the competitive advantage that cost analysis and management can bring to companies within a supply chain. Addressing a number of strategies to evaluate the total cost inherent in a customer-supplier relationship, this book uses TCO, activity-based costing (ABC), and ABM to analyze and control supply chain costs. It employs industry survey data to examine whether these techniques are being used in real life, which factors affect their usage in the supply chain, and whether they are producing results. Combining survey results with game theory, the authors suggest cost reduction strategies for competitive environments and predict the outcomes of these strategies. This cost-effective system helps businesses remain competitive and profitable. Supply Chain Cost Control Using Activity-Based Management shows the importance of partnerships in applying ABM principles to suppliers and demonstrates the positive results that ABM can have on elements of the TCO.

        Book Description

What happens when money obtained from criminal activities is either used for illegal purposes or for the infiltration of the `legal underworld' via seemingly legal investments (`dirty money') or both? Over the past few years, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba have faced the mounting criticism that they are too often misused by criminals for money laundering purposes. Fighting Money Laundering addresses the new Netherlands Antillean legislative response to this charge and offers suggestions for its improvement in the prevention of money laundering. Topics of coverage include + the scope of the problem, + preventative and repressive legislation, + the role of financial institutions and specialised advisors, + the process of reporting unusual transactions, + the penalization of legal entities, + Dutch High Court jurisprudence, and + bank secrecy and other secrecy obligations. This work also examines the International Agreements and the legal situation in the United States. It sets out all of the information in a manner geared toward ready comparison with legislation in the reader's own country. Fighting Money Laundering is the only book to describe the current money laundering situation in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. As such, it is a primary reference manual for staff of financial institutions, government personnel, law enforcement officials, accountants, and legal practitioners, all of whom must be prepared to confront aspects of money-laundering in their work. Fighting Money Laundering provides information on professional standards which may be used for consultation in assessing a money laundering situation or considering ways to address the problem.

          Book Description

Ptolemy's Almagest is one of the most influential scientific works in history. A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

          5 out of 5 stars Ptolemy's "Almagest".......2006-07-05

It's a very interesting astronomy book, it's explain how they've thought about the motion of the planets(epicycles)in the past(AC)by the time of the Ptolemy and Babylonia.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Translation.......2004-11-25

Adding to the other comment below about star names beginning with "al-," I might add that the title "Almagest" itself is an Arabic translation of the original Greek "Megale Syntaxis."

          5 out of 5 stars epicycle.......2003-10-10

so it turns out that the center of the eccentric circle that the planets travel on travels on its own circle but be careful this is not a giant epicycle on a small deferent! haha! genius!!

5 out of 5 stars A new look at the universe.......2001-06-28

The main desire of Ptolemy in writing his Almagest is to explain and account for the motions of the apparently erratic celestial beings in terms of perfect and circular motions. In doing so he introduces the epicyclic (which states that the center of a smaller circle orbits around the earth and the object orbits around the smaller circle) and the eccentric hypotheses (which supposes that the center of the circular motion of the planet is not exactly centered on the earth), which are ultimatly equivalent to eachother in terms of result. Begining with the motion of the sun in the sky and moving on to the less accountable outer planets, Ptolemy moves his mathematics brilliantly with a nod to a story teller's art. Some may find his introduction of his equant (something that is often said to defile his principles of perfect motion), which explains the retrogradation of the outer planets, to be a let down to the fanfare of perfection in the stars. Yet, overall, the Almagest manages to recapture the magic and wonder of the universe through complicated mathematical hypotheses and to succesfully lay the ground for the break throughs of Copernicus, Brahe, and Kepler to come. If you are at all interested in astronomy or mathematics, you ought to read this.

5 out of 5 stars compares favourably with the Tetrabiblos.......1999-11-08

The mathematics is difficult to follow, but as it is developed from Euclid and Eratosthenes it is reliable. The observations have been made from a very wide area and over a long time; but while the mechanics may be rather mysterious the results are impressive.

Does the front cover always show Penelope weaving at her loom? - the ancients obviously thought highly of Homer and the Greek myths.

The Tetrabiblos survives together with the parallel Greek. Since the Almagest went through successive transliterations/translations (and interpretations?), it might not be too surprising if the Greek text has disappeared.

And what of Ptolemy's other books? - his geography for example. The Almagest has observations from Ceylon to Thule, including Britain. The ancients must have travelled widely.

Is there anywhere an account of the origin of the names of stars and constellations? These seem to have accumulated over time. Many star names begin "Al-", from the Arabic, I suppose.

          Well done!

            Book Description

This easy-to-follow book offers a statistico-geometrical approach for dating ancient star catalogs. The authors' scientific methods reveal statistical properties of ancient catalogs and overcome the difficulties of their dating originated by the low accuracy of these catalogs. Methods are tested on reliably dated medieval star catalogs and applied to the star catalog of the Almagest. Here, the dating of Ptolemy's famous star catalog is reconsidered and recalculated using modern mathematical techniques. The text provides necessary information from astronomy and astrometry. It also covers the history of observational equipment and methods for measuring coordinates of stars. Many chapters are devoted to the Almagest, from a preliminary analysis to a global statistical processing of the catalog and its basic parts.Mathematics are simplified in this book for easy reading. This book will prove invaluable for mathematicians, astronomers, astrophysicists, specialists in natural sciences, historians interested in mathematical and statistical methods, and second-year mathematics students.Features:

1 out of 5 stars Star wars with history.......2000-07-25

With this book a known mathematician A.T.Fomenko presents his outrageous conception of world history. This book may be recommended only to the prepared reader, who is ready to trace every speculation and calculation of the authors to find absence of common sense.

To date the catalogue of stars containing 1028 stars from Chapters VII and VIII of the Almagest, the authors select on the basis of obscure criterion in contradiction with the logic of astronomical observations, and the words of Ptolemy himself only 8 stars of "informational kernel" as they call it. From these 8 stars only one - Arcturus has pronounced proper motion. As the systematical errors in latitudes of all stars in Bootes is very large, the authors obtain their X-th century. Than the authors select 18 observations of lunar eclipses which are provided by Ptolemy in the Almagest. Ignoring the precise dates and other information and taking only phases and separations in years, they find 18 medieval eclipses from which one third could not be observed at all in eastern hemisphere! After that they try to calculate 4 occultations of planets and find 4 dates with absolutely enormous errors in degrees. This immediately raises the question on the acquaintance of the authors with elementary technique of astronomical calculations. In only more or less appropriate date for Venus (but the calculations show that the distance was still 50 times (!) more than given) during the "occultation" in 2 degrees the Sun was shining!

It seems that the authors have read the book "How To Lie With Statistics" - by Darrell Huff very attentively, unfortunately that can not be said about the works of generations of scholars studying the Almagest.

                  Book Description

"Grasshoff presents a detailed study of the catalog starting with its history and then details the various controversies over the catalog from Tycho through Dreyer and R.R. Newton. His analysis considers such questions as precession and solar theory, the methods of observations, and the internal errors of the catalog. The author concludes that Hipparchus' observations were incorporated into the Ptolemaic catalog but that Ptolemy, in the absence of any understanding of how to treat errors of observation, selected from a variety of observations those that best fit his theory. Charts of all the Ptolemaic stars and a catalog of their modern identifications are given." -Choice

"The author's purpose is to lay to rest an argument which has blazed for several centuries, the question at issue being this: did or did not Ptolemy plagiarize (from Hipparchus) some of his data, and fabricate some of rest? The author begins with a detailed review of the history of the argument, turns then to a close examination of the data itself, and concludes that the charges which have been brought against Ptolemy are rooted in anachronism and in misunderstanding of his scientific objectives. One of several appendices provides modern identifications of the stars which appear on Ptolemy's list. Very carefully argued and produced, with detailed references, many figures. Sensible, useful...but quite unlikely to achieve its objective." -Book News

Dr Prof Anatoly Fomenko and team dissect Almagest of ancient Ptolemy compiled allegedly in 150 a.d. and considered to be the corner stone of classical history. Their report states: Almagest was compiled in XVI-XVII cy from astronomical data of IX-XVI cy. As the King of astronomers Ptolemy is proven to be a medieval phantom, therefore standing aquitted of the crime he was accused by the late American astrophycist Robert Newton. Allegedly ancient Egyptian horoscopes painted in Pharaohs tombs of the Valley of Kings or cut in stone in Dendera and Esna for centuries considered impenetrable are decoded at last! All dates contained therein turn out definitely medieval and pertain to the XI cy a.d. the earliest. Well, how old is 'ancient' Egypt actually? Discover highly interesting angles, chunky facts and updates to the biographies of the famous medieval astronomers Tycho Brahe and Copernicus. Reading this book resembles a test flight to the distant past returning with a conclusion: the past is eventually both drastically closer and dramatically different from one taught in school. Fasten your seatbelts, please. The publishers will pay a 10,000 dollars USA in cash to the first person who will not only declare but prove consistently, with adequate methods and in sufficient detail on the same or better academic level that the New Chronology theory of Full member of the Russian Academy of Science Dr Prof Anatoly T. Fomenko, Head of the Chair of the Differential Geometry of MSU and his team is wrong in their dating of Almagest.

5 out of 5 stars Ptolemy vanishes corrected.......2007-08-22

I was probably the first to purchase this hefty book on preorder, but opened it only 2 days ago. I swappped it for potty #7 with my astronomer bookpal and tipped him off how to make easy $10G betting on Almagest. Astronomer read it and returned vol.3 with strong advice not to bet $10G. I sure won't, Almagest was never my cup of tee and Ptolemy no relative of mine. By now my astronomer bookpal purchased his own copy of Astronomical methods of dating..and I have my own hp7. The first astronomical part of this book (Fomenko's one) is way too deep in many a page for a non astronomer, and the second part is a true delight for a puzzles buff, which I'm not, but this book is a must have as it is filled with well argued insights like: 'ancient' Greek astronomer Hipparchus was non other than medieval astronomer Tycho Brahe, the great Copernicus was a doctor, canon and administrator - not astronomer at all, lol.. In the 2nd egyptian section Dr et al have decoded all 'ancient' Egyptian horoscopes that contained readable astronomical information, making timeframe of Egypt very much younger (ix-xv centuries AD!!!). My 1 (one) USD safe bet is: mainstream egyptology will stay silent as mummies - this treatise is more poisonous for them than the curse of Pharaoh. Will anyone say amen Ptolemy, please?

In Florin Diacu's own words: "Fomenko, Nosovski, and Kalashnikov have come up with some interesting methods that can extract new information from the almagest. like any other historical dating, theirs is based on certain assumptions, different from the ones traditionalists have made. without forcing the data, and taking three independent approaches that use valid mathematical methods, they have obtained consistent results that have been published in respected journals. Fomenko's results are obviously not perfect and do not explain everything, but their integrity cannot be denied." ("The Lost Millennium", pp. 144)

Although "Chronology 3" is composed of 2 main parts, that is the Egyptian zodiac datings and Ptolemy's almagest datings, i can only defend Fomenko with the almagest datings, they are sound, they are truly possible. i believe however that the zodiak datings still need to be worked out, i can't find any possible scenario for such late datings.

I strongly recommend this book regardless what any angry historian could say about it. anyone who believes that the chronology of world history is well documented and sound should read as a starter "Centuries of Darkness" by Peter James and his team. Truly, don't believe anyone, simply read, learn and see for yourself. This is history, not math.

When reading Fomenko, one does not have to take everything he says at face value, but one must have an open mind to a field that is dominated more by its general tradition than by its sound proof. just like most believers preach the bible without ever reading it many historians preach chronology without ever having asked the question: what if chronology is all wrong?

Ask yourself the question and dare to explore.
