Financial Exclusion (Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Banking and Financial Institutions)
Carbo Santiago , Edward P.M. Gardener , and Philip Molyneux Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1403990514 Release Date: 2005-08-11 |
Book Description
This text is concerned with the increasingly important and problematic area of financial exclusion, broadly defined as the inability and/or reluctance of particular societal groups to access mainstream financial services. There is growing evidence that deregulation in developed financial sectors improves financial inclusion for some societal groups, but may at the same time exacerbate it for others. In developing countries access to financial services is typically limited and therefore providing wider access to such services can aid financial and economic development.

New Frontiers in Banking Services: Emerging Needs and Tailored Products for Untapped Markets
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540464972 |
Book Description
The book is devoted to a subject which deserves growing attention from policy makers, financial operators and academics. It is the issue of unbanking or underbanking in developed countries.
With respect to this, the goal of the authors has been that of highlighting both in a theoretic framework and through the study of the main experiences investigated on field, the need/the opportunity for banks, financial institutions, public authorities and non for profit associations to devote more efforts in understanding the problem of financial exclusion in order to offer to low-moderate-income people (LMI people) new opportunities of accessing financial services (banking, credit and investment services).

The Political Economy of Financial Market Regulation: The Dynamics of Inclusion And Exclusion
Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1845425189 |
Book Description
`This is the best book I have yet seen on the social and political implications of financial market liberalisation and regulatory change in a globalizing world. The authors systematically analyse the relationships between powerful private sector actors, policymakers and regulators, and other interested groups, identifying crucial neopluralist coalition-building processes leading to complex pro-market forms of reregulation. Each chapter examines these processes at several levels: competing actors and institutions in the financial sector itself; wider political processes and power relationships; and distributive outcomes - or who wins and who loses in the multi-level playing field of 21st century global finance.' - Philip G. Cerny, Rutgers University, Newark, US and University of Manchester, UKThis book focuses on recent financial market reforms, and their implications for social, economic and political exclusion. In particular it considers the hitherto under-researched question of whose interests govern the design of regulatory mechanisms and who influences the decision-making process. This process is set out as contested terrain, in which there are winners and losers, and in which there are inevitably circles of exclusion. The authors, comprising financial authority experts and academic specialists, expand the concept of exclusion beyond its typical social dimension to incorporate all actors, be they individuals or institutions not permitted to contribute to financial market regulation as a public good. As they point out, this may take the form of political, economic or indeed cultural exclusion. The book examines the conflicts that arise between various interests and how these are managed within the process of regulation.
The book has a focus on political financial sector reforms at the global level with special emphasis on how these reforms are implemented in the EU. The authors conclude that financial governance has to be embedded in broad legitimization structures, encompassing the participation or representation of a variety of interests affected by it, if they are to be deemed democratically legitimate. Furthermore, inclusion also has to show substantive effects on governance outcomes.
This volume opens up the debate about the future of financial market regulation and hence, policy makers, NGOs, researchers and scholars will find this interdisciplinary book of great interest. It will also appeal to political scientists, economists, financial market participants, regulators and economic policy makers in general and academics of sociology, political science, economics and finance in particular.

Smallholder Cash Crop Production Under Market Liberalisation: A New Institutional Economics Perspective
Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0851992773 |
Book Description
`Pro poor' economic growth is widely recognized as an important means for reducing poverty in developing countries. Agricultural intensification, together with increased integration in input and output markets, is a key aspect of this approach. This book uses a new institutional economics perspective to review the effects of market liberalization on services to smallholder farmers. In many parts of the world, particularly in Sub-saharan Africa, the private sector has failed to fill the gaps left by the collapse of state supported input and credit supply systems. Using case studies from Ghana, Tanzania and Pakistan, the book investigates the difficulties facing the private sector in supplying inputs and credit and the conditions required for sustainable private sector investment to the benefit of rural people. The analysis has important lessons for donor and government policy makers and for companies wishing to make commercial investments. It is invaluable for researchers, academics and development agencies concerned with rural and agricultural economics and development.Books:
