3 out of 5 stars Well for everyone who knows accounting.......2002-07-24

This is an auditing book for ones who know some accounting and want to learn basic and important aspects of auditing. Even this is not useful for introductory level, it can be still used for this purpose. Some of the examples are given from CPA firms and this makes the book efficient for later usage.

                  Book Description

A number of practices in today's `wired' workplace threaten several fundamental rights. More and more, employees are expected to curtail their right to communicate and their right to access to information. Their right to privacy may also be breached by monitoring of their e-mail and Internet activity. Although employers have legitimate reasons for such restrictive or invasive measures and clearly have their own right to supervise the use of company property it can no longer be denied that the legal and even moral issues that arise from the new reality of work in the information society demand serious and detailed consideration if labour law's role as a vital component of the employment relationship is to survive. In this very significant book, crucial questions arising in the context of the new world of work are explored by a distinguished gathering of academics, civil servants, trade union representatives, managers, employees and students from sixteen countries. The Conference, held in Brussels in November 2000, was co-sponsored by the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, Union Network International, UNI-Europa, and the Euro-Japan Institute for Law and Business. Participants analyzed trends and the ever-increasing possibilities and opportunities to communicate, monitoring included, in order to clarify such issues as the following: + `on-line rights' and the form they should take in the workplace; + employer liability for damage to third parties caused by e-mail or Internet activity; + sexual harassment via e-mail or Internet activity; + protection against hackers and other security measures; + safeguarding confidentiality, both employer's and employee's; and + the right to personal use of the company's communications technology. These and other aspects of the growing conflict between managerial prerogative and the right to privacy in the workplace are here given a fuller and more provocative treatment than is available in any other single source. This thoughtful and detailed investigation of an important and timely subject will be of enormous value to business people, labour lawyers, policymakers, academics and students all over the world at this dramatic moment in the evolution of work.

With this extraordinary handbook, you, too, can frame the stars and have them hanging on your livingroom walls. Astrophotography for the Amateur provides a complete guide to taking pictures of stars, galaxies, the Moon, the Sun, comets, meteors and eclipses, using equipment and materials readily available to the hobbyist. Based on suggestions from readers of the first edition, the new edition has been completely updated and expanded to include new chapters on computer image processing and CCD imaging; expanded advice on choosing cameras and telescopes; completely updated information about films; a much larger bibliography; and hundreds of new photographs (in color and black and white) demonstrating the latest equipment and techniques. Astrophotography for the Amateur has become the standard handbook for all amateur astronomers. This new edition provides an ideal introduction for beginners and a complete handbook for advanced amateurs. It will also appeal to photography enthusiasts who will discover how to take spectacular images with only modest equipment. Michael A. Covington received his Ph.D. at Yale University. He is the author of several books, including Syntactic Theory in the High Middle Ages (Cambridge, 1984). He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and is the Associate Director of the Artificial Intelligence Center at the University of Georgia.

5 out of 5 stars Very good reference book for any astrophotographer.......2002-07-25

Micheal Covington's book covers all aspects of astrophotography starting from objects, from camera selection to films, exposure methods, mounts and drives, guiding of the mount & guiding accuracy/errors, and of course the CCD imaging. I also gives ideas on how to build a simple barn door mount. It does not end at taking exposures. After an exposure is taken we have to convert it into an acceptable quality print or into a computer file. Images can be greatly improved by digital processing. So it also covers image processing ideas. The only point to be noted is that one must look at his website and download the errata. The book has many printing errors, some of which are trivial though. That, of course, must not deter any user. I consider is my best field guide book on this topic. I believe his recent edition has got over these errors - not mine. I bought mine in 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory book.......2002-03-05

This book is a must in doing amateur astrophotography if you are going serious. It has lots of information which is very useful. For example it teach you to calculate the focal ratio using diferent techniques of takig pictures with the telescope, it help you calculate the exposure times in order to photograph the moon or a constelation on a tripod.
It is an excellent source but you have to do calculations(formulas). If you don't like numbers, this book is not for you, but if you do like numbers this book is very useful.

5 out of 5 stars My best book on astrophotography.......2001-12-18

I've bought a handful of books on the subject, and this one is head and shoulders above the rest. Some of the other books have lots of pretty pictures, and very little information on actually taking photos. I found the instructions easy to follow, and when I had a question, or needed to figure something out, this book always had it. Two big thumbs up!

3 out of 5 stars I hesitated to pick up a copy of this book..........2001-08-26

I've been trying my hand off and on for the last year at astrophotography with my Meade LX-200. In that time I've scoured the internet, devoured newsgroup, and emailed enough astrophotographers that you'd think I was trying to get elected to NASA or something. In all that time, one name and reference guide kept coming up as a "must have". Astrophotography for the Amateur by Michael A. Covington.

Everywhere I turned, everyone I asked, their answers always seemed to come down to "...because Michael Covington does it this way" or "Yeah I tried doing it that way but after reading Astrophotography I tried it this way and received better results". That attitude actually "put me off" this book. Here I wanted to learn how to do astrophotography, not follow some recipe in a book. After finally browsing through a friends copy I was immediately impressed with the book as a reference guide, and when comparing it to my own notes and conclusions found several area's where I had erred, resulting in poor photo's. Of course, the flip side is true as well.

Some of the info in this book (even though it is a second edition) is dated such as film types and recommendations. I've found his exposure calculations for Lunar photography to be way over exposed.

I have to make a correction here, originaly I (and others) noted the lack of CCD imaging information in the book and I need to note that the first addition makes no mention of CCD, while the second edition has a section detailing the diffrences between CCD and film work. It also has a brief section devoted to CCD work. Its not as indepth as his discussions on film work.

2 out of 5 stars Advanced Math Major Needed.......2001-06-05

Unless you're extremely fluent in advanced mathematics, calculus, etc., this book is not for the faint of heart. For those of us who never got past shop math - forget it. The formulas and calculations are enough to knock you out or at least put you to sleep. I'll give it a re-read again, but first drive through, just blew me away - sorry, math was never my strong point! Overall - 2's the best this rates for non-mathemeticians.

                  Book Description

The CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) has revolutionised optical astronomy during the past 20 years, and specialised astronomical CCD cameras are now even more affordable, colour is standard, and they provide spectacular results.

Digital Astrophotography: The State of the Art, provides some examples of the best images, and gives readers hints and tips about how to get the best out of this extraordinary technology.

Experts in CCD astronomy from North America and Europe have contributed to this book, illustrating their help and advice with many beautiful colour images – the book is in full colour throughout. Techniques range from using simple webcams to highly technical aspects such as supernovae patrolling. Computer processing, stacking and image-enhancement are detailed, along with many hints and tips from the experts.

                  3 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2007-07-30

I agree with other reviewers. There is a good section on imaging with CCD cameras but the other sections (Web cams, Digital SLRs) are weak. Not enough detail for the beginner that wants to get out and image. Too many photographs that don't provide substantial educational value. This is a multi-authored book and there is too much variability in the quality of the chapters. I own other books in Patrick Moore's series that I enjoyed, but this is not one of them.

                  1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2006-07-26

More like a small coffe table book than a comprehensive treatment of the subject. I expected more detail about How To and less glitsey pictures: Book is filled with " Here's a picture of...." and then a nice color photo. I'm returning this one.

4 out of 5 stars Covers a lot of ground.......2006-05-19

Let me start by saying - Do not make this your primary source for information on digital astrophotography. It has a ton of good info for a total beginner like me, but it also leaves out a lot on info.

It has a unique format in that each chapter has a different author (a claimed expert in each field). Some were much better than others. All chapters did a decent job of explaining the process of each kind of technology, but in almost all cases I was left with more questions than answers.

The book did give me a lot of ideas and areas to further research, but I was hoping when I bought it that it would give recommendations for type of equipment to buy and how to use it to get the best results.

BOTTOM LINE -- This book is a great source for info and ideas, just don't assume it will be your only source as it leaves a lot unexplained.

                  Book Description

Almost all amateur astronomers want to take photographs of the night sky. For all but the simplest star-trail pictures, this involves machinery - a telescope drive - to track the stars, essential to compensate for the rotation of the earth. The task becomes even more complicated when photographing very small or very faint objects that require high magnification or very long exposure times.
Amateurs have many options according to their requirements, technical ability, and budget. Astrophotography for Amateurs looks at all the possibilities, including normal ("wet") photography, CCD imaging, and modern techniques of computer enhancement. There are sections about photographing different classes of astronomical object from the Moon to faint nebulae, as well as a thorough look at the equipment needed.

This book I feel takes up topics that Michael Covington's "Astrophotography for the Amatuer" and Robert Reeve's "Wide-Field Astrophotography" leave off. The two afore-mentioned texts deal with the techniques, exposure times and equipment for astrophotography more deeply. "Practical Astrophotography" as the title suggests deals better with practical considerations: what to pack on you field trips, what you need for those foreign excursions, etc. This is what sets this book aside from the others. Sure, Jeffery Charles covers the basic techniques very competently, also, but doesn't go as deeply as the other two books. And he concentrates on film photography only.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting book.......2001-04-13

Good book to start with, especially with its tables of exposures and detailed background technical info on optics & photography. Good descriptions of simplified focal length, exposure, magnification and other calculations.

Absolutely no information on CCD photography.

The layout of the book is not very good for applying step-by-step approach for beginners, the process is mixed in with descriptions of technical background.

It has been 2 years since I was into astronomy. This is a book which talks much about astronomical photography. I enjoy the content in here because it is so useful when you take out a telescope, enjoying the delight of stars twinkling... I am 16 in Taiwan, a boy who likes astronomy best. I hope I can read far more books as I want. Hope you enjoy the pleasure to stare at the very true universe of our own!

2 out of 5 stars An excellent book of a bygone era...(10 years ago it would be 5 stars ).......2007-04-05

As Jean Dragesco says in the final conclusion in this book: "This book is quite probably the last to be devoted to high resolution obtained by the methods of photography". Oriented exclusively on film high resolution solar, lunar and planetary photography it's competely outdated. The info on seeing conditions, types of telescopes etc is excellent and still usefull though. The era of film planetary photography has passed... TP 2415 (the best film for planetary photography) has been out of production for years... from the film developers mentioned in the book Agfa Rodinal can't be found anymore, as Agfa has gone out of business. If you are interested to see how the old timers could achieve really impressive planetary photographs on film this book may be of interest to you, but the price of 75$ seems too high, if you want to take real high resolution images yourself by modern means (I don't use the word photographs)look elsewhere.

I JUST CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD ABOUT THIS BOOK AND HOW IT HELPED ME MAKE A WISE BUYING DECISION BEFORE I BOUGHT MY TELESCOPE. MR. DRAGESCO WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO WRITE ANOTHER GREAT BOOK? Product Description

Basic Astrophotography tells you how to take pictures of stars, galaxies, planets, the Moon, the Sun, comets, meteors and eclipses using equipment readily available to the amateur astronomer. The first section, Getting Started, presupposes little knowledge of photography or astronomy and concentrates on what can be done with minimal equipment. For example, an ordinary 35 mm camera on a tripod, aimed at the sky on a starry night, will photograph more stars than the unaided eye can see and will bring out an awesome variety of colours. Add a telephoto lens, a pair of binoculars, or a small telescope, and you have all that is needed to photograph an eclipse or the main surface features of the moon. The two subsequent sections, Advanced Techniques and Equipment and Materials cover the use of cameras in conjunction with telescopes and constitute a thorough handbook, including technical imformation on optical systems, film characteristics, and processing techniques. Throughout, the emphasis is on current practice. This book will become the standard handbook for amateur astronomers who want to take pictures of the stars and will also appeal to photography enthusiasts who know relatively little about astronomy but are intrigued by spectacular pictures.
