    Book Description

This fresh, hip title speaks to the most important things that concern a woman AFTER law school-her job, her family, her friends and her shoes. Using an experience to which all women can relate, the book analogizes practicing law to a woman's never-ending search for the perfect pair of shoes. Take an uncensored tour through the underbelly of the legal world with seasoned Sisters as your guides. These ladies of the law blindly plunged into practice, not knowing how to swim with the sharks, let alone retain their femininity. Now these Sisters-all of whom love to complain and give unsolicited advice-finally shed light on the womanly art of the practice of law and ultimately address the question, "is it possible to have it all?" The topics are wide-ranging and as diverse as: -- Picking out the perfect pair of shoes: Using all of your superior female powers and prowess to secure the perfect legal position -- Becoming familiar with the shoe department: Sizing up the cast of characters in your law practice -- The art of maintaining your perfect shoes: From taming the testosterone tyrant to obsessing over food and fat

If only finding the perfect pair of shoes was so simple...

3 out of 5 stars Fluffy fun read but sometimes annoying.......2007-01-10

I thought the book was fun and insightful. I have been practicing law for 8 years and there were a lot of truths and useful insights. However, the "you go girl" phraseology was annoying. There was also a lot of focus on pigging out, which seemed a little odd. Take this book in perspective. The authors clearly all came from the same "big city big firm" experience and that is all that is reflected in the book. Knowing that, it was a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars A funny, comforting read for lawyerchicks-to-be.......2006-04-08

The real-life legal minds behind this book must have had a blast writing it. It's high-energy, hilarious writing that manages to cover any topic about law practice a la femme one could ever contemplate. Though they quickly dismiss it as silly in their own Forward, the authors use a shoe shopping analogy throughout. Pardon the pun, but the analogy seems to fit perfectly every time they use it to begin a new chapter or to describe career paths. I loved the way they create an actual dictionary of acronyms that they use so frequently and cogently that, by the end, you're likely to be tickled, as I was, by the realization that you know exactly what a LASS is, and you are determined to avoid it! Hah, I write this review without the book on-hand because I've already passed it along to my favorite 2L friend, so I can't even recall what "LASS" stands for, yet I reiterate that I will not let it happen to me!

My favorite chapter was one devoted to juggling mommydom and a legal career. I had expected to read more depressing and/or unrealistic information and statistics on the topic, but, instead, found myself feeling pleasantly empowered by the end. If you're a future or newbie lawyer like I am (I'm signed up for stilettos in LA in the fall), then you'd likely enjoy their treatment of this sensitive subject.

As I've already mentioned, I loved the book so much that I've already passed it along to a friend, so when I say I recommend it, I really mean it. It'd be a great law school graduation gift!

1 out of 5 stars One of the authors got fired when her boss read it.......2005-08-17

I wouldn't follow this book's advice if I were you.

1 out of 5 stars Vapid, Vacuous, and Insulting.......2005-06-14

This book should never have been published. From authors who regard children as necessary Upper West Side "accessories" and view solo practitioners as bottom-feeders who interview poorly, these writers flaunt their myopic worldview to--ultimately-- their own embarrassment.

Fortunately they borrowed the conceit for their book from "The Rules" and use a tired, weak metaphor of career choice = the right pair of shoes-- these broad hints let you know right away that the book is without merit. By the time you glance through it you're left with the intellectual equivalent of the dregs at the bottom of a Cosmopolitan glass. This kind of "sisterhood" in the law is not for the attorneys that I consider colleagues, and certainly not for me.

1 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled lawyer gets book deal using her only angle..........2005-02-22

Don't believe the family 5* reviews. I'm a lawyer and read an officemate's copy and I still feel cheated.

This book is a waste of money. The thesis is the classic narcissistic ploy- "have it all without consequence" (that is, while the kids are in daycare and you toil away billing hours on the fast track to divorce and kids with ADHD).

Admitedly I'm a man, but how long until this low-level lawyers admit that the book she's peddling will at best motivate other women to become more like the her (miserable)?

It's pretty clear from her petty "insights" and vapid writing style that Sherman fits the classic "Jill of all trades" mold- mediocre lawyer, mother, and most important, mediocre writer as well.

      Book Description

In this pioneering work, Siraj Sait and Hilary Lim address Islamic property and land rights drawing on a range of socio-historical, classical and contemporary debates and their practice. They address the significance of Islamic theories of property and Islamic land tenure regimes on the "webs of tenure" prevalent in the Muslim societies. They consider the possibilities with Islamic legal and human rights systems for the development of inclusive, pro-poor and innovative approaches to land rights. They also focus on Muslim women's rights to property and inheritance systems. Engaging with institutions such as the Islamic endowment (waqf) and principles of Islamic microfinance, they test the workability of "authentic" Islamic proposals. Located in human rights as well as Islamic debates, this study offers a well researched and constructive appraisal of property and land rights in the Muslim world.

        Book Description

The Roman household (familia) was in many respects dramatically different from the modern family. From the early Roman Empire (30 B.C. to about A.D. 250) there survive many legal sources that describe Roman households, often in the most intimate detail. The subject matter of these ancient sources includes marriage and divorce, the property aspects of marriage, the pattern of authority within households, the transmission of property between generations, and the supervision of Roman orphans. This casebook presents 235 representative texts drawn largely from Roman legal sources, especially Justinian's Digest. These cases and the discussion questions that follow provide a good introduction to the basic legal problems associated with the ordinary families of Roman citizens. The arrangement of materials conveys to students an understanding of the basic rules of Roman family law while also providing them with the means to question these rules and explore the broader legal principles that underlie them. Included cases invite the reader to wrestle with actual Roman legal problems, as well as to think about Roman solutions in relation to modern law. In the process, the reader should gain confidence in handling fundamental forms of legal thinking, which have persisted virtually unchanged from Roman times until the present. This volume also contains a glossary of technical terms, biographies of the jurists, basic bibliographies of useful secondary literature, and a detailed introduction to the scholarly topics associated with Roman family law. A course based on this casebook should be of interest to anyone who wishes to understand better Roman social history, either as part of a larger Classical Civilization curriculum or as a preparation for law school.

          Book Description

In recent years, gender has emerged as an important focus of attention in discourse in and around labour law. Gender is gradually moving from the margin to the mainstream of labour law debate, particularly with the development of a 'family-friendly' policy agenda. This book consists of a series of essays from an international selection of leading legal scholars exploring the shifting boundary between work and family from a labour law perspective. The object is to assess the global implications for labour law and policy of women's changing role in paid and unpaid work. The approaches adopted by the contributors' are diverse, both conceptually and geographically, encompassing analyses from Australia, North America, Canada, the UK, Europe and Japan, and including national and supra-national perspectives. Key themes informing the collection as a whole are the re-positioning of unpaid care work as integral to the performance and structure of productive activity; and consideration of the implications of recognizing the interdependence of work and family activities. In this way, the book seeks to develop a central theme from the previously published 'Labour Law in an Era of Globalization' (Conaghan, Fischl and Klare, eds. OUP), as part of an ongoing exploration into the distributive implications of economic and political globalization.

            5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2002-07-12

Please don't start reading this book with expectations of knowing each of these wonderful women's life details. It is an vague exploration of the paths that each woman's life took.

I have to say I was inspired to start a monthly bruncheon with local women leaders and young women. It starts next month and am very excited about what I got out of the book to make things happen in my own area.

This book leads you to make a difference in your community!

            5 out of 5 stars I found some mentors...and they found me..........2002-05-25

I found some mentors in this terrific book. I learned about the book when I was buying a couple videos and saw a cross-reference to this book, which was a great idea (to lead me to this book) because I had not heard about it. SO this book found me, and I'm glad it did. I can't imagine a woman not liking this book and taking away from it something that you can use. Very entertaining and upbeat. I don't consider myself to be a "feminist," but I wouldn't call this a feminism book--that sounds too political for what this is. The Counselors is stories from impressive people who just happen to be women who are the first or second person to do the job they do, what they have to say about it, what they wish they knew sooner, that sort of thing. If you think you might want to read it, I'd say give it a chance and read it. It won me over.

5 out of 5 stars A "Think and Grow Rich" for our time??.......2002-05-24

There's an old classic how-to book, "Think and Grow Rich," in which the author (a man) interviews a number of the leading industrialists of the day (all men), including Andrew Carnegie, for their advice in succeeding in business and growing rich. How fitting in this world where women have started to play a role as leading citizens to gather their advice on how to get to where they are. It's an old recipe, but it works.

5 out of 5 stars It Reads Like a Novel.......2002-05-24

I usually read fiction, but I read this book because it was given to me for law school graduation. The independent stories complement each other so much and build on each other effectively enough that I found myself thinking it could have even been done as a novel. I didn't expect it to be as enjoyable of a read. I knew I would learn something from it, but I didn't expect to really like it as much as I do.

            5 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Put it Down--.......2002-05-24

I read this book in one evening, flopped on my bed, and didn't want to leave this "world" til I had to...a "world" where diversity in power and responsibility is valued, one where people look to help others along, where women are respected as much as men, and where a vision of the future as a better day is sustaining in difficult times. It was absolutely an inspiration and a breath of fresh air. It is easy to become discouraged by so many things that don't really matter.

I particularly liked the way the author tells you about these amazing, incredible women with such a light touch, making them seem accessible. I'll read this again and refer to it often.

                Book Description

A pregnancy outside of marriage was a traumatic event in frontier Canada, one that had profound legal implications, not only for the mother, but also for the woman's family, the alleged father, and for the entire community. Patrick Brode examines the history of the 'heartbalm' torts in nineteenth-century Canada - breaches of duty leading to liability for damages for seduction, breach of promise of marriage, and criminal conversation - that were part of the inherited English law and were a major feature of early Canadian law.

Encompassing all ten Canadian provinces, Brode's study examines the court cases and the communities in which they arose. He illustrates the progression of these 'heartbalm' actions as women gained more and more autonomy in the late nineteenth century, until questions arose as to the applicability of these feudal remedies in a modern society. He argues that the heartbalm cases are a testament to how early Canadians tried to control sexuality and courtship, even consensual activity among adults. In mixing legal and social issues, and showing how they interact, Courted and Abandoned makes a significant contribution to legal history, women's studies, and cultural history.

                  Book Description

Gender discrimination pervades nearly all legal institutions and practices in Latin America. The deeper question is how this shapes broader relations of power. By examining the relationship between law and gender as it manifests itself in the Mexican legal system, the thirteen essays in this volume show how law is produced by, but also perpetuates, unequal power relations. At the same time, however, authors show how law is often malleable and can provide spaces for negotiation and redress. The contributors (including political scientists, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, and economists) explore these issues--not only in courts, police stations, and prisons, but also in rural organizations, indigenous communities, and families.

By bringing new interdisciplinary perspectives to issues such as the quality of citizenship and the rule of law in present-day Mexico, this book raises important issues for research on the relationship between law and gender more widely.
