      Book Description

The tax rules of the United States and other countries have intended and unintended effects on the operations of multinational corporations, influencing everything from the formation and allocation of capital to competitive strategies. The growing importance of international business has led economists to reconsider whether current systems of taxing international income are viable in a world of significant capital market integration and global commercial competition.

In an attempt to quantify the effect of tax policy on international investment choices, this volume presents in-depth analyses of the interaction of international tax rules and the investment decisions of multinational enterprises. Ten papers assess the role played by multinational firms and their investment in the U.S. economy and the design of international tax rules for multinational investment; analyze channels through which international tax rules affect the costs of international business activities; and examine ways in which international tax rules affect financing decisions of multinational firms. As a group, the papers demonstrate that international tax rules have significant effects on firms' investment and other financing decisions.

          Book Description

This comprehensive analysis discusses how American and non-American multinational corporations (MNCs) can plan, manage, and control their business activities and invest in four selected Middle East countries: Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabaia--and as a special unique feature, a fifth country, Israel. Abdallah covers in detail the tax systems and regulations and their effect on business in the Middle East. He looks at the future of the business environment and its effect on accounting in the Middle East during the first decades of the new century, and examines the role of different local and international organizations that are helping to make the Middle East an excellent place to do business. Combining the Arab countries with Israel into a single volume, and writing in a remarkably clear style, Abadallah offers practical guidelines for Americans and other MNCs, potential international investors, large accounting firms, and even Middle East governments themselves. He helps businesses conduct feasibility studies for joint venture startups in the Middle East countries covered; helps MNCs manage their business more effectively and avoid conflicts with governments or cultural attitudes; offers managers and officers an understanding of Middle East environmental factors that may significantly affect their businesses; helps MNCs evaluate the performance of Middle East subsidiary managers; helps MNCs develop strategic transfer pricing policies that fit Middle East countries and which go according to accounting systems and practices there as well as in their home countries; and goes deeply into the accounting systems and practices of the countries under analysis here and compares them with both U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and International Accounting Standards. This volume is of special value to corporate executives in or planning to enter the Middle East market, graduate students, and teachers of international business and accounting, and practicing accountants with Middle East clients (or who seek to acquire them).

                Book Description

In the increasingly global business environment of the 1990s, policymakers and executives of multinational corporations must make informed decisions based on a sound knowledge of U.S. and foreign tax policy. Written for a nontechnical audience, Taxing Multinational Corporations summarizes the up-to-the-minute research on the structure and effects of tax policies collected in The Effects of Taxation on Multinational Corporations. The book covers such practical issues as the impact of tax law on U.S. competitiveness, the volume and location of research and development spending, the extent of foreign direct investment, and the financial practices of multinational companies.

In ten succinct chapters, the book documents the channels through which tax policy in the United States and abroad affects plant and equipment investments, spending on research and development, the cost of debt and equity finance, and dividend repatriations by United States subsidiaries. It also discusses the impact of U.S. firms' outbound foreign investment on domestic and foreign economies. Especially useful to nonspecialists is an appendix that summarizes current United States rules for taxing international income.

                      Book Description

Edited by Arthur and Lila Weinberg. A remarkable collection of the great attorney's writings which reveal why he was such a force in the court of law and in the court of public opinion. Fascinating.... Whether Darrow is condemning capital punishment, questioning immortality, or extolling free trade, he is usually incisive, never boring, and always unafraid of speaking his mind. --William M. Kunstler, New York Times

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Law, poets, free trade, foreign debt, and religion.......2004-10-13

Clarence Darrow was famous for being a defense attorney, a line of work that can provide for a range of interests in a society in which people who are ambitious never cease trying to make something new illegal. Darrow also wrote articles and gave talks on political issues of the day. VERDICTS OUT OF COURT collects items from 1895 to 1936, divides the items into seven subject areas, and includes an Introduction by Arthur and Lila Weinberg dated March, 1963, which praises Darrow for publicly representing "more cases for the weak and poor than any other lawyer in America," (p. 35) as Darrow himself put it, in a case in which he was charged with jury tampering in California. Mild contradictions abound in his life. He proclaimed that he was always for peace and love in his own case, but Germany offended his sensibilities so much by invading Belgium and France that he joined the popular opinion that "I am thoroughly convinced that not only was it right of America to enter this war, but it was her duty, if she recognizes duty, and that had she stayed out she would have been so cowardly that she would have received and deserved the contempt of all the right-thinking people of the world." (p. 343).

Darrow's book, CRIME: ITS CAUSE AND TREATMENT, was published two years before he defended Leopold and Loeb, who were so young and rich that Darrow had to transfer his concern for the weak and poor to some who weren't. "In a terrible crisis there is only one element more helpless than the poor, and that is the rich." (p. 40). Americans in Chicago were sure they could legally do something terrible to young people who botch their first murder and kidnapping crime, but Darrow tried to make the court seem like it was giving them a fair deal.

"After several weeks' deliberation Judge Caverly sentenced Leopold and Loeb to ninety-nine years plus life. Twelve years later, Loeb was killed in a prison fight. In March, 1958, on the twentieth anniversary of Darrow's death, a rehabilitated fifty-two-year-old Nathan Leopold was paroled from the state penitentiary at Joliet, Illinois." (p. 41).

Some things have changed in the last hundred years, but the topics presented in this book hit some current interests. When he was invited to address the Sixth Annual Meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in Washington, D.C., on April 20, 1928, he was told to abuse the newspapers and he said, "I can't do it adequately." (p. 401). This was before American bombers were famous in enemy countries for dropping bombs on television stations that dared to propagandize against whichever side the Americans were on, but he does a pretty good job of describing how nobody believes what they read in the press, but they don't know anything else anyway. "They know only one thing: get the public angry so they will kill somebody or increase the term of servitude. That resulted the other day in the state of Michigan sending a man to the penitentiary for life for having a pint of whiskey in his possession." (p. 405).

"Newspapers are not alone in this. We are all natural joiners. I never joined anything except the Elks. I joined the Elks because in the early days it was about the only place where you could get a drink in a small town. But I no sooner joined them than they passed the prohibition law, and I haven't been back since. There is no reason for going back." (p. 408).

                                    Description:
Decline and dieback of eucalypts have been attributed to an exotic pathogen, various native organisms, climatic factors and agricultural or urban pollution. Where particular biotic or abiotic factors could not be singled out, they have been regarded as predisposing, inciting or contributing factors in 'diseases of complex etiology'. Ongoing monitoring of eucalypt decline during recent droughts in eastern Australia, together with extensive one-time observations across temperate Australia, provided opportunities to further examine some hypotheses of decline and dieback that were largely based on retrospective investigations. Episodes of dieback can be distinguished from the process of chronic decline. Dieback episodes were associated with natural climatic extremes whereas chronic decline was associated with human management. Decline of forests in nature reserves was associated with exclusion of fire and grazing, while decline of rural trees was mostly associated with pasture improvement. Trees growing low in the landscape on soils with poor drainage and aeration were especially predisposed to decline. It appears that chronic abiotic stress causes tree decline when the function of roots is impaired by changes in soils. Climatic extremes can accelerate chronic declines associated with human management. A variety of pests, 'pathogens' and parasites can take advantage of trees that are stressed by environmental changes, especially eutrophication. Similarities between diebacks and declines in the Atlantic and Pacific regions suggest a simple unifying concept of tree decline and dieback. The implications for management of forest health are discussed.
