    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Resource.......2006-07-23

This book is the single most comprehensive source of commodity and futures market information available. Since 1939 traders, hedgers, portfolio managers, and speculators have relied rely on The CRB Commodity Yearbook to help them navigate the vagaries of the commodity markets.

The Yearbook's depth renders it indispensable. It helps identify changing trends in supply and demand and for projecting important price movements. This edition provides covers more than 100 domestic and international commodities. It includes seasonal patterns and historical data from the past ten years as well as current monthly and annual pricing and trading patterns.

The information is easy to access. Each commodity is introduced by a brief article, recent pricing trends and factors such as droughts, wars, diseases, or politics--that have influenced past prices. Data presented in over 900 tables, graphs, and price charts. They are clear. The companion CD-ROM provides the information in an electronic format.

Some of the biggest stock moves I have had the good fortune to participate in have been leveraged by substantial moves in commodity prices. If we are re-entering that type of market cycle, traders and investors cannot afford to be without this book.

                          Book Description

This volume includes the complete texts of two of John Stuart Mill's most important works, Utilitarianism and On Liberty, and selections from his other writings, including the complete text of his "Remarks on Bentham's Philosophy." The selection from Mill's "A System of Logic" is of special relevance to the debate between those who read Mill as an Act-Utilitarian and those who interpret him as a Rule-Utilitarian.

Also included are selections from the writings of Jeremy Bentham, founder of modern Utilitarianism and mentor (together with James Mill) of John Stuart Mill. Bentham's Principles of Morals and Legislation had important effects on political and legal reform in his own time and continues to provide insights for political theorists and philosophers of law. Seven chapters of Bentham's Principles are here in their entirety, together with a number of shorter selections, including one in which Bentham repudiates the slogan often used to characterize his philosophy: "The Greatest Happiness of the Greatest Number."

John Troyer's Introduction presents the central themes and arguments of Bentham and Mill and assesses their relevance to current discussions of Utilitarianism. The volume also provides indexes, a glossary, and notes.

                              Book Description

North Carolina is home to the only continuing pottery tradition in the United States outside the Native American tradition of the Southwest. Noted for this rich tradition from Seagrove to Pisgah, work produced here has earned the attention of collectors, artists, and visitors from around the globe. The collection of The Mint Museums in Charlotte, numbering more than 1,600 pieces, is considered the most comprehensive in any public institution. This volume catalogs more than four hundred individual pieces in the Museums' collection and includes five essays by authorities in the field of ceramics, providing a visual and textual guide to a vibrant living tradition.

Illustrated with hundreds of color photographs, the catalog includes descriptive entries on potters and potteries and details about individual pieces. These include traditional utilitarian wares from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, transitional or "fancy wares" made during the first half of the twentieth century, and contemporary objects. Displaying works from the four major pottery-producing areas of the state--Moravian settlements, Seagrove, the Catawba Valley, and the mountains--the collection tells the entire story of the North Carolina pottery tradition. Essays by collector and patron Daisy Wade Bridges, scholar Charles G. Zug III, gallery director Charlotte V. Brown, potter Mark Hewitt, and curator Barbara Stone Perry survey the history and significance of one of the state's best-known art forms.

5 out of 5 stars Using "Harvesting Nature".......2007-02-23

This book is unlike any other I have ever read. It shows you how to
connect with nature at a very intimate level making the natural world
accessible to all of us as it was to our native ancestors. You will learn
where to begin and what to focus on in order to integrate with our natural
world. This book covers what was second nature to our ancestors. Almost all of my how-to and what questions were answered in this very extensive book.

For instance you might want to know what is available for cooking spices or deodorant or how to keep the mosquitoes and ticks away. It's all in this book and so much more. This is the must have book for anyone interested in reconnecting or finding their place in nature. Nature enthusiasts, hikers, hunters, campers, and anyone curious about how or what in nature will lovethis book. I keep it handy and use it as a reference manual.

                                You need this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat vauge........2003-09-25

This is a very interesting book. It covers many different kinds of plants, although it does not go into much detail about each one. But it is definatly worth the price. If you are really interested in learning how to forage for wild plants, I would recomend this as a starter book. It should be used along with some other books, such as a field identification guide and maybe a book that goes into more detail with each plant.

                                    Book Description

The Utilitarians, Stephen argues, were social reformers first and philosophers second, if at all. The history of philosophy is not an isolated domain governed by the unfolding of a timeless inner logic; rather it is an integral part of the history of humanity.

"The English Utilitarians of whom I am about to give some account were a group of men who for three generations had a conspicuous influence upon English thought and political action. Jeremy Bentham, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill were successively their leaders; and I shall speak of each in turn."

Sir Leslie Stephen was the first serious critic of the novel, and he was also editor of the great Dictionary of National Biography from its beginning in 1882 until 1891. In 1859 he was ordained a minister. As a tutor at Cambridge his philosophical readings led him to skepticism, and later he relinquished his holy orders. He wrote several essays defending his agnostic position. Throughout his life Stephen was a prominent athlete and mountaineer. Virginia Woolf was the younger of his two daughters by his second wife. His first wife was Harriet Marian Thackeray, daughter of the novelist.
