Until the early '90s, project management was definitely located somewhere near the unsexy end of the business spectrum. But now, with the rise of downsizing and outsourcing, it has become one of the hot disciplines. Professional membership of the U.S.-based Project Management Institute has quadrupled in the last decade, and Microsoft claimed recently to have over 2 million users worldwide of its project-management software. The reasons for this growth are simple. Project management is about managing "projects," that is, unique pieces of work (as opposed to ongoing operations). Downsizing, outsourcing, and the accelerating pace of change have meant that, increasingly, work is carried out on an ad-hoc, one-off project basis. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management is designed as an advanced textbook for businesspeople with a grasp of the basics and insufficient time (or inclination) to go back to school to learn more. Written by Eric Verzuh, president of the Versatile Company, a leading project-management consultancy, this is not a heavy academic text.
Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication.
As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady

Great as an introduction to Project Management.......2007-09-05
Great book as an introduction to Project Management.
Well organized, not too dry and easy to read. Includes most of the important topics from this area, busines cases, downloadable forms and helpful checklist as tools to manage projects, meetings, communication etc.
The book was exactly what I expected after reading comments before buying it.

Useful Book, But Not for PMP.......2007-01-28
This is a useful book on project management: has some useful templates which you can also download from the website. It's easy to read. But, the editorial reviews of this book represent the recent trend to link each PM book to PMI and to its certification PMP. In my opinion, this book is not compatible with the PMI's approach to project management, and therefore is not useful for the PMP exam preparation. Here is the difference: PMI's approach is based on best practices, while this book's approach is based on one person or one school of thought on PM, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
The discipline of project management has come a long way on the path of maturity. So, if you are looking for a project management book based on best practices and global standards, or if you are looking for the PMP exam preparation material, this is NOT the right book for you.
Exceptional Resource.......2006-11-07
The book was concise, well organized and highlighted all the concepts associated with Project Management.
I would recommend to anyone embarking on Program Management career
Very good, practical book on PM.......2006-10-29
It has not new, but practical content. The way the author explain things is very clear. I use it as a guide to everyday work.
One of the best things on this book are the templates it has for the most important documents in Project Management. This templates are online also, so you can download and use them.
It has plenty of diagrams, tips, key concepts and warnings that make the reading very easy and the concepts very understandable.
The author doesn't get into deep discussion neither on quality nor risk subjects. Don't spect to learn about earned value with this book.
Don't spect either to have a very nice presentation or high quality pages, instead select this book for it's content.

Great service.......2006-01-16
Item was received promptly in advertised condition
This one needs to be on your bookshelf.......2005-10-02
Very useful for everybody who needs to have understanding about finance and accounting in thier day-to-day tasks. Clearly shows how managerial budgets are linked to financial reports. Furthermore it gives a basis to understand and read financial reports and takes out the important information needed for the daily management decisions and follow-ups.
The book takes you step by step and on a comprehensive way through all the necessary knowledge and skills you should have.
Should be entitled Managerial Accounting.......1999-08-19
Great, straightforward approach to explaining what managers do, and should, look for in the numbers periodically generated by their accounting systems.
Innovative management approach to financial analysis........1998-11-15
Despite the title of this book, it does not really cover the traditional "finance" topics such as weighted average/marginal cost of capital, portfolio theory, capital structure decisions, investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, etc. In my opinion, most of the book deals with managerial accounting-----but it does a great job doing so! In fact, this book contains the best treatment of cost volume profit analysis that I've ever seen----and I am a CPA with 10 years experience. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to manage a company "by the numbers".
To reaffirm and not teach.......1998-09-11
I felt that there was not enough spent on the subject itself and more of a dummy's version of getting acquainted with Finance. If you've ever taken one course in Finance, you wiz through the book without absorbing any more than you remembered.

A great introduction to business principles........1999-01-15
This book provides a great introduciton to the key elements of business. After reading it, my business vocabulary was greatly increased. I found this book a better read than "The Portable MBA." "Fast Forward," with less reading, seems to cover more (e.g., economic value added).
Book Description
Geoff Harcourt has made substantial and wide-ranging contributions to economics in general and Post-Keynesian economics in particular. In these volumes more than 80 of the world's leading economists pay tribute to, and carefullly evaluate, his work.

PKers can't follow the analysis of involuntary unemployment........2005-04-05
This book of collected essays is an excellent example of why the Post Keynesian,Institutionalist, and Cambridge Keynesian(neo Keynesian)schools of economics are practically on the brink of academic extinction.I will concentrate on essays 18,21 and 32 by Corry,Davidson, and Eatwell, respectively, but the criticisms made apply to practically all of the essays, which deal with a variety of issues ,such as the capital reswitching controversy, which dealt with a capital stock that was defined as a function of only one variable,a monotonically decreasing rate of interest,Keynes's General Theory and other aspects of his approach, the Cambridge Circus, the work of M Kalecki, the post keynesian school, and other assorted topics. The essays by Corry,Davidson and Eatwell deal specifically with the existence of involuntary unemployment and of an unemployment equilibrium, which should have been described as a set of multiple equilibria, only one of which is a full employment equilibrium. The general approach of each author is to argue that Keynes was right, after which some quotations from Keynes's works are given in support of that conclusion. Then it is acknowledged that Keynes did not supply any formal or mathematical analysis proving the existence of either involuntary unemployment or an unemployment equilibrium. This kind of approach can only be read in one way.Keynes failed and his "theories"are nothing more than a series of empty assertions that have no scientific merit.Contrary to the conclusions reached by the essayists in this book,Keynes provided a rigorous mathematical model, based on a series of elasticities that he constructed in chapters 20 and 21 of the General Theory, that generalized the classical and neoclassiacal theories.Keynes's major result is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p is the real wage, mpl is the marginal product of labor in the aggregate that is derived from an aggregate production function, and mpc and mpi are the marginal propensities to consume consumption goods and investment goods, respectively. If mpc+mpi
<1,then you automatically obtain any one of a number of different multiple equilibria plus some level of involuntary unemployment.Only if the mpc+mpi=1 will the neoclassical theory become operational. Not a single author in this book demonstrates that he/she has any idea of the nature of Keynes's technical analysis. They show an understanding only of the literary exposition.

Book Description
The original contributions in Fair Trade and Harmonization investigate the growing conflict between free trade policies and the domestic environmental, labor, and antitrust policies of individual nations. They clarify the issues and offer a critical economic and legal analysis of the contending positions along with a series of proposals for resolving or reconciling them. Taken together, the two volumes present a comprehensive catalog of the government actions that are causing conflict in these areas and a critique of the existing scholarly literature on the subject.
In each area, the contributors extensively discuss and analyze forms of policy harmonization and the arguments for and against it, with a goal of better understanding as a constant throughout. A more particular goal, however is to take a sober second look at, and impose some restraint upon, the growing chorus of demands to push aside the existing trade institution (the World Trade Organization) in the name of social policies, especially those regarding environmental and labor rights.

Book Description
This collection of more than two dozen papers delivered to a symposium on International Harmonization of Competition Laws examines the policies and practices of competition laws in major industrial jurisdictions and emerging industrialized economies such as the host country of the Symposium, the Republic of China on Taiwan. World class scholars and leading enforcement officials contributed to this volume, which examines the difficult issues of harmonizing competition laws. In addition to enhancing the scholarship on a topic of great current interest after the Uruguay Round of GATT talks, the book also systematically examines topical issues in competition laws. It thus not only offers policy analysis, but also provides useful discussions of national and regional competition laws. A useful tool on comparative competition laws, this volume should be of great interest to academics, practitioners and enforcement officials around the world.

From the author: Economic competition among governments, making use of both fiscal and regulatory policy instruments, is the subject of great concern on both sides of the Atlantic, for fear that it gives rise to a "race to the bottom" resulting in levels of public services that are too low. This paper explores the theoretical and empirical foundations for this claim. The literature is a large, rich, and complex one that, while perhaps inconclusive, provides some valuable insights into the nature of the issue. The case for harmonizing measures to restrain fiscal competition is not wholly compelling; there remains, in fact, a good case for the benefits from such competition.
