PaineWebber investment executive Bambi Holzer's first book, Retire Rich, presented peak-earning, but financially naïve, baby boomers with the fundamental tools and techniques necessary to create individualized retirement plans based on current situations and projected needs. In Set for Life, she addresses financial planning and management issues for readers even closer to retirement age. Unlike boomers a decade or two younger, who are still actively accumulating resources, Holzer writes, these folks "are more concerned with keeping what they have. They are not necessarily trying to get rich. They just want to have a comfortable lifestyle and make their money last as long as they do." She offers advice on maximizing "your retirement bucket ... between now and then" through sound investment decisions; determining how assets will be affected by additional sources of income such as Social Security, real estate, and paid employment; accommodating the inevitable impact of taxes, insurance, and inflation; and generally preparing the best way possible for the uncertainties ahead. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

"When can I afford to retire?"

"Will my money last long enough?"

"How can I enjoy my retirement to the fullest?"

Not long ago, retirement was simple. You'd spend thirty or forty years at the same company, get your gold watch, and collect your pension and savings bank giveaways for the duration of your years left on earth. No longer. The classic notion of retirement has been replaced with a newer, healthier concept that reflects the longer lifespans, more active lifestyles, and exciting "creative aging" options that seniors enjoy today. Along with these new choices come new responsibilities, as people in their fifties join the "sandwich generation" who must simultaneously care for their children, their parents, and themselves.

So how can you ensure that your retirement is as comfortable as possible? How can you make sure your money will last at least as long as you do? How can you, in short, be set for life?

In Set for Life, financial expert Bambi Holzer provides the answers. This practical, thoughtful book-the only guide specifically for individuals age fifty-plus-shows you how to assess your needs, manage your investments, cope with taxes and insurance, stay ahead of inflation, prepare your estate, and develop realistic financial goals, no matter what your situation or how financially savvy you are.

In plain, simple language, Set for Life walks you through the various parts of your financial life and explains how to pull them together to build a clear, achievable plan for a satisfying future. As you read through the book, you will:

Set for Life is more than simply a financial planning guide-because life after fifty is no longer simple. Written by a woman who helps people like you every day, this book is as full of encouragement and insight as useful information. It will help you clarify your own vision of your retirement and bring it to fruition. Most of all, it will give you confidence that you can take control of your financial life, and secure the future you hope for.

Excellent read! Easy, down-to-earth explanation of retirement planning by a financially savvy advisor. I especially appreciate that all proceeds from book sales go to charity.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2000-05-07

The book description sounded like it was going to break new ground. Instead it just recycles old advice about retirement. It even scares older readers in order to sell books. Save your money.

"While retirement information has been always seemed intimidating and confusing, I never imagined that this book would be so easy to read.

                Book Description

This book takes a middle ground between the topical and historical approaches to Western ethics. The chapters are topically arranged, but preserve the flow of history in two ways. First, each chapter explains the historical development of the topic under consideration. Second, most chapters focus on a specific famous philosopher who championed a particular tradition, such as Aristotle, Locke, or Kant, and the chapters are chronologically ordered based on when these key philosophers lived.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read on the Dangers of Death Fundamentalism.......2006-10-07

This newly revised and updated edition of Forced Exit provides a gripping overview and analysis of the assisted suicide and euthanasia movement and the threat it poses to human dignity and human equality. Author Wesley J. Smith lays out the chilling intellectual underpinnings of a movement that asserts there is such a thing as human life unworthy of life--and that other humans or "experts" should be called upon to determine whose life satisfies the criteria for continued existence. Smith gives readers clear and straightforward analysis of the important issues at stake and the implications for the most vulnerable among us.

Smith persuasively shows that he basic ideals that the assisted suicide/euthanasia movement hope to carve into federal and state laws through litigation and legislation are detrimental to the equality-of-life ethic that has long been recognized in this nation. In Forced Exit, Smith gives readers a strong defense of that important ethic. That ethic makes clear that the elderly, the sick and the disabled have as much importance, dignity, and worth than the young and the healthy.

Importantly, Smith provides solutions to the dilemmas faced by patients at life's so-called margins. Steps must be taken to educate doctors about how to recognize depression in patients and that depression must be treated. Current medical practice must place greater emphasis upon pain control, since palliative measures can significantly reduce--if not eliminate--the physical pain felt by many patients who have serious injuries or illness.

The false notion that assisted suicide somehow furthers patient autonomy is exploded by Smith. Through principled analysis and through countless concrete case studies, he demonstrates that the wishes of the sick, elderly, and disabled are all too often given short or ignored when it comes to important medical decisions. Smith describes the crucial distinction between the right to refuse unwanted life-saving medical procedures and the so-called "right to die"--proactive measures specifically intended to end life. Also, Smith deftly explains how administering food and water to patients is separate and distinct from medical measures.

Forced Exit receives my strongest recommendation.

                Book Description

What legal recourse do you have if someone has read your private e-mail without your consent? Who owns the copyright to the message you just posted on a bulletin board? Can you get into trouble for downloading a sexually explicit file? These are among the many questions that the authors, both practicing attorneys, address in Cyberspace and the Law. Without resorting to confusing legalese, they present a clear and concise analysis of legal issues in the anarchic world of cyberspace for members of the on-line world who have little or no legal background.

The introduction provides a quick tour of cyberspace (on-line services, bulletin board systems, private systems, and networks) and activities (e-mail, public messaging systems, software exchange, electronic publishing, entertainment, chat, educational and research services, and commercial applications). Cavazos and Morin then take up electronic privacy issues including anonymity and both statutory and common law approaches to protecting private communications (featuring a discussion of Steve Jackson Games v. United States Secret Service); the virtual marketplace of electronic contracts and credit card transactions; copyright law in an uncharted new world; freedom of speech; adult material (digitized images, animated sequences, sexually explicit text, "hot chat"); and cyber-crimes.

This book has a copyright date of 1994. The Communications Decency Act was passed in 1996. The DMCA was passed in 1998. The Patriot Act was passed in 2001. This book is out of date.

4 out of 5 stars Good for starting, but limited in space and somehow outdated.......2003-01-07

This book offers a good introduction to legal matters in the internet to people in any of the following situations:

                1. They are familiar with the internet but have no law studies.
                2. They have studied legal matters but don't know how to apply them to the internet.

If you are not in any of these cases, the book would be somehow difficult to understand.

Though the internet is a worldwide network, the book deals only with the US law; moreover, it recognizes the need for updating (edited: 1994). So, you should later go to another source for country-specific or updated information (there is plenty of books and the internet itself). And, due that the internet is always changing, you will have to update the information without regarding the book you read.

4 out of 5 stars Good coverage of the field for layman and sysops.......1998-11-28

"Net Law" (cf. BKNLHLUI.RVW) was written for the lawyer. "SysLaw" (cf. BKSYSLAW.RVW) was written for the layman, rather than lawyer, but was still aimed at sysops rather than the common herd. This book fills that space, and is the first I can recall that does so.

Chapter one provides a very brief description of cyberspace, starting with William Gibson's invention of the term, running through various different electronic entities, and including some basic online activities. Privacy, and particularly the Electronic Communications Privacy Act as applied to the Steve Jackson Games case, is the topic of chapter two. The chapter ends with a rather odd look at encryption. Eventually getting around to PGP's problems with ITAR (the International Traffic in Arms Regulations), the book seems to state that PGP should be avoided because simple possession of it may be illegal. Since the book is based entirely on US law, it is obviously aimed at an American audience, and the issue of export does not appear to be mentioned. Contracts are the subject of chapter three, mostly dealing with common law.

Chapter four covers copyright. I must say that I am always amused by the wording of the American First Amendment; that government shall make no laws regarding the abridgement of freedom of speech or press; since there are laws about defamation, fraud, and pornography. These, and free speech, are dealt with in chapter five. Considerations of prurient material are discussed in significantly more detail in chapter six, and I must say that this is one of the most informative and even-handed explanations of the topic in any book reviewed to date. Chapter seven closes off the book with a grab bag of potentially illegal computer related activities. The intent seems to be to warn users about apparently innocuous actions that could bring them afoul of the law. As usual, there is a section on computer viruses, and, as usual, it isn't very good. Appendix A provides a good list of contacts for legal and paralegal interest groups. Other appendices list various US statutes examined in the book.

While this work once again limits itself to the US, and fails to note the international nature of cyberspace, it does provide its information in a readable and accessible form. The authors do not always deliver on their promise to avoid legal jargon (such as "color of law"), but all the contents can be understood by the intelligent and determined lay reader. Where legal niceties are not completely delineated they would only be of interest to other lawyers anyway.

                Book Description

Child Versus Childmaker investigates a person-affecting approach to ethical choice. A form of consequentialism, this approach is intended to capture the idea that agents ought both do the most good that they can and respect each person as distinct from each other. Focusing on cases in which a conflict of interest arises between childmakers parents, infertility specialists, embryologists, and others engaged in the task of bringing new people into existence and the children they aim to create, the author considers what we today owe those who will come into existence tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Look at Person-Affecting Consequentialism.......2000-05-29

Author addresses issues of creating future people and conduct toward future people within a perspective sympathetic to the utilitarian foundations of current social policy theory. Presents an alternative to the total utility view that genuinely takes into account individual well-being, by incorporating the "person-affecting" insight. Read this book if you are interested in normative ethical theory and/or issues surrounding new reproductive technologies.

                1 out of 5 stars Weak analysis.......1999-12-23

This is not a useful or interesting treatment of the issues it raises. The analysis is weak and focused more on terminological problems than on substantive insights. Cannot recommend it for anyone with an interest in the subject matter.

1 out of 5 stars Uninteresting, unoriginal, unworthy of serious study.......1999-12-12

This book consists of nothing but jargon-laden rehashing ofothers' ideas and a few poorly conceived and insignificant accretionsto those ideas. The problems and ideas presented here are notinherently difficult to understand; the author engineeers problems of understanding for the reader with her stilted prose and her focus on abstract academic theorizing. She forgets that the underlying problems are real ones, facing real people, not merely occasions for her to exhibit that she has read about some esoteric concepts in the academic literature.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone working in population ethics needs to read this........1999-04-15

This book develops a moral theory that provides a potential background for "wrongful life" suits, and a perspective from which to evaluate new reproductive technologies. The writing is sometimes technical, and non-philosophers may find this book tough going. But from now on, anyone interested in these issues will need to read Roberts.

                            Book Description

This anthology traces the fascinating progress from plant pathology to biotechnology through 38 scientific papers on Agrobacterium, published over the past century. Included are the seminal scientific papers on the biology and application of Agrobacterium with introductory commentaries mostly by those involved in the original work. The commentaries give background to the papers and explain the problems faced and the techniques used, providing insight into the way fundamental research progresses.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens: From Plant Pathology to Biotechnology is divided into five sections. The first section begins with 1904 when Erwin F. Smith began detailed work on crown gall and considered it to be a plant pathological problem. It explores many of the biological discoveries made over the past century, including the pivotal moment when Armin C. Braun discovered that crown gall was a plant cancer. Other papers cover the beginnings of T-DNA research and the development of vectors to improve the process of transferring T-DNA from bacterium to plant cell. The second section delves further into vector systems and genetic coding for disease and insect resistance, exploring the evolution of genetic engineering in crops. The final three sections deal with themes developed from crown gall studies, including "quorum sensing" or population density, the DNA sequencing of one strain of A. tumefaciens, and the first genetically engineered organism, strain K1026, released for commercial use.

Students, professors, plant pathologists, microbiologists, or anyone interested in research and/or the history of plant pathology and biotechnology, will find this collection of papers an intriguing read.

From the Preface: "…the journey is not over. As the commentary by Paul Hooykaas indicates, it looks as though T-DNA will insert into any cell, be it plant, fungal or even mammalian. Is there a possibility of using Agro¬bacterium in gene therapy? Will Agrobacterium prove to be as useful a tool in fungal genetics as it has been in plant genetics? Its potential is mind-boggling."

5 out of 5 stars A history of work with a plant-tumor of bacterial origin.......2005-11-14

Collaboratively compiled, edited and organized by Eugene Nester, Milton P. Gordon, Allen Kerr, Agrobacterium tumefaciens: From Plant Pathology to Biotechnology is a compendium of informed and informative articles on the biology of "Agrobacterium tumefaciens" by leading scientists and experts in the field. From "A Century of Pioneering Work Begins" in which Paul d. Peterson presents a history of work with a plant-tumor of bacterial origin, to ""A. tumefaciens" applications in genetic engineering, to DNA sequencing, to biological control of "Crown Gall", Agrobacterium tumefaciens: From Plant Pathology to Biotechnology is a seminal work that should be considered an invaluable, core addition to governmental, corporate, and academic research and reference collections in this specialized field of biological and biotechnological research.
