Book Description
Sarbanes-Oxley and the New Internal Auditing Rules thoroughly and clearly explains the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, how it impacts auditors, and how internal auditing can help with its requirements, such as launching an ethics and whistle-blower program or performing effective internal controls reviews under the COSO framework. With ample coverage of emerging rules that have yet to be issued and other matters subject to change, this book outlines fundamental blueprints of the new rules, technological developments, and evolving trends that impact internal audit professionals.

With the collapse and scandals involving Enron, WorldCom, and other companies, auditors have increasingly come under pressure to play a greater role. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act mandates that auditors have a greater responsibility. This book examines the new role of the auditor within this new corprorate environment.
Customer Reviews:
Sarbanes-Oxley and the New Internal Auditing Rules.......2006-09-29
This book provides a comprehensive overall view on Sarbanes Oxley and other evolving internal audit standards and practices. Moeller has taken an extended view on the roles of internal auditor to include that of quality auditors for ASQ and ISO.
I find the book useful for general knowledge on what internal audit entails. However, this book has its limitation for practising internal auditors who are seeking in depth working tools to meet their professional requirements.
Disappointing!.......2005-08-15
Despite Mr. Moeller's "brand-name appeal", I must confess I found this book disappointing. The title promises too much perhaps; how can mere 300 pages cover the matter for a practitioner? Written in an informal style, it paints on a broad canvas -- the kind of material that would do well for an after dinner-talk for auditors, but most definitely lacks depth and specificity. It could be useful for students or business managers, but is unlikely to help a professional auditor much.
Browse through it first to see if it answers your needs before putting down your money.
Comprehensive and clear.......2004-07-11
This book is essential reading for anyone involved in internal audits per Sarbanes-Oxley, including auditing professionals and senior management whose business or technical domains are affected (i.e., all senior managers).
The focus is on auditing from the practitioner's point of view, and Chapter 2 shines because it summarizes SOA and how it affects internal audit as a function and as a practice. This material encompasses relationships with external auditors and with the audit committee, which are important parts of SOA. A further tie to the audit committee is given in detail in Chapter 3.
Chapter 5, 'COSO, Section 404, and Control Self-Assessments' is the heart of this book in many respects. However, as an IT consultant I found Chapters 6, 7 and 9 more aligned to what I do - and the reason why I cited the audience of this book as wider than auditing practitioners. For example, the inclusion of CobiT (Control Objectives for IT) in Chapter 6, Disaster Recovery and Continuity Planning (Chapter 7) and Enterprise Risk Management, Privacy, and Other Legislative Initiatives (Chapter 9) are directly or indirectly related to IT, and the information I gleaned from those chapters helped to place SOA within the context of my profession's support requirements and IT auditing. I was also surprised and gratified to find ITIL best practices, which is an international standard for IT infrastructure management, including service delivery and service support. Again, this information shows how far reaching SOA is, and the need for all managers to fully understand their roles and how SOA will affect the way they operate and manage their functional areas.
Of course, for professional auditors, the chapters on Internal Audit Fraud Detection and Prevention (8), Rules and Procedures for Internal Auditors Worldwide (10), and Continuous Assurance Auditing Future Directions (11) round out this comprehensive book. As a non-practitioner I found it to be clearly written and, in many respects, enlightening. The breadth of topics and the depth into which they are delved is impressive.

Book Description
The advent of new stock markets (the German Neuer Markt, the French Nouveau Marché, the Italian Nuovo Mercato and Nasdaq Europe) has been one of the most important reforms of stock exchanges in Continental Europe in the 1990s. These stock markets aimed at attracting early stage, innovative and high-growth firms that would not have been viable candidates for public equity financing on the main markets of European stock exchanges. Of these new markets, the Neuer Markt emerged as Europe's answer to NASDAQ. However, Europe's new stock markets met with only limited success. Stock prices plummeted after the ending of the stock market bubble and new markets suffered from poor liquidity, insider trading scandals and accounting frauds. This volume provides an overview of the rise and fall of Europe's new stock markets. It contains twelve papers which investigate the characteristics, the ownership structure and the market performance of companies in the short and long run, In addition this volume examines the role of venture capitalists. New stock markets offered venture capitalists an attractive exit for their investments and helped to create a more vibrant venture capital industry in Europe. The private equity market in Europe today is as large as it was just before the advent of new stock markets. As such, the need for stock markets that allow private equity investors to divest their equity stakes in growth companies continues to exist.

Customer Reviews:
I would give it 0 stars if possible.......2006-12-19
This book doesn't discuss any strategies for passing the series 7, it basically consists of various investment tips from financial planners seems to be marketed more towards a person who is looking to invest.
Waste of Money.......2005-11-27
save your money and buy a book that really intent to help you on your Series 7 test.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK.......2005-02-03
This book is completely useless. This book could be useful for someone with no prior knowledge on investing BUT it's very unlikely as the person who wrote this book had typos throughout the book. I have a problem with buying a book that says "Series 7 exam prep" and discusses nothing about the exam. Not worth the money spent , i wouldn't even buy it used. PAGE 66 ...the word on the first paragraph should be "manage" not "mange" although at some points of this book i really thought it was in french. So useless.
Total Waste of Money.......2004-10-25
This book is absolutely useless. The information provided is not connected in any relevant way to the Series 7 test and does not give any more insight into 'thinking like a stockbroker' than would a copy of Barron's or the Economist. In fact, go buy the latest issue of Barron's, save $15, and get a lot more articles. You can feel almost immediately that this book was made simply to cash in on anxious Series 7 test takers. You do not need this book; it is an expensive and unnecessary way to acquaint yourself with information otherwise available.
The Most Unique Series 7 Book- A Must Read!.......2004-03-19
This is a great addition to your Series 7 test prep materials. It is unlike any other book available. I highly recommend reading this book!

The ability to read law well is a critical, indispensable skill that can make or break the academic career of any aspiring lawyer. Fortunately, the ability to read law well (quickly and accurately) is a skill that can be acquired through knowledge and practice. Becoming a lawyer.......2007-09-17
I bought this book for my wife as she was getting ready to start law school in the fall of 2007. Prior to buying this book, she had taken a summer enrichment class aimed at developing the skills necessary to succeed in her first year in law school. My wife read this book after finishing her summer class and before the actual start of her real classes; she did this following one of her professor's advice. Well, she is glad she did! Everything she had done in class was referred to in the book, plus further tips on how to be on top on her law school assignments. So, if you have decided to go to law school, this is the book you need to ace your first year!!
I, myself, am a lawyer too, and I know what a head start she has accomplished.
Mandatory Reading For Law Students -- Critical Reading Curriculum Instructor, Phillip G. Hubbard Law School Preparation Program.......2007-07-20
When I was asked to teach the "critical reading curriculum" at The University of Iowa's Phillip G. Hubbard Law School Preparation Program, I researched methodically to find a text that would be "on point" as they say in the legal world. Ruth Ann McKinney's Reading Like A Lawyer is just that. Written in an engaging and easy to read style, McKinney teaches prospective and current law students all the skills necessary to successfully understand a variety of legal documents. These skills include learning to brief a law case and analyze casebook law, learning how to decipher the complexities of analyzing statutes, and discovering how to read legal cases outside a law classroom's casebook. The strength of McKinney's text is that she provides you with real edited casebook cases, real-world statutes, and real non-casebook (i.e. unedited) cases, ready for the reader to read first-hand. McKinney then supplies the student with a list of questions to help them hone valuable legal reading skills. After a student finishes learning how to read a case, and then reads it, a highlighted and annotated version of the same legal case appears, wherein McKinney demonstrates the areas in the case that are important and should have been identified as important by the reader. Reading these annotated cases is akin to entering the mind of an experienced high level attorney as s/he reads and analyzes a case. When I brought McKinney's Reading Like A Lawyer to the attention of the Dean of Students at The University of Iowa's School of Law, Dean R. Chayce Ramey, I was delighted to learn that he often recommends McKinney's text to law students, and that he himself refers to it when teaching legal skills. I was surprised to see so few reviews of McKinney's text, and I suspect part of the reason is that this is one book many competitive law students would like to keep a secret. Well, the secret's out of the bag -- McKinney's book is an outstanding must read for all prospective and current law students!

Phenomenal.......2006-07-28
I may not be the most unbiased reviewer (I want to UNC Law and know Ruth well) but this is one of the best, if not THE best, book to help law students get through their first days of law school. I use the book myself (I also teach law) and it has the best skill-building exercises I have used. As a legal writing collegue of mine said, "Ruth should walk around with a tiara all day--she really is the queen of legal writing!"
Incredible book. If you buy one book before starting law school to help you prepare for your first semester, this should be it.

Forensics explained.......2007-08-28
I plan to study forensics next year and wanted a taster to whet my appetite. I was very pleased. It starts with the basics and very methodically explains all of the procedures from the initial arrival at a crime scene to its closure. All of the steps are explained perfectly and it is a great book to dispel the erroneous notions as portrayed in popular T.V. shows. All of the lab work is explained and it is easily understood. I would recommend this book to anyone with a genuine interest in forensics, and the procedures undertaken to resolve crimes.
Forensic Case Book.......2007-01-09
Gave as a gift, my mom loved it...speedy (and reasonable) shipping, very pleased
Columbo demoted for sloppy crime scene analysis!.......2005-12-06
This is a 'how to' book: how to secure a crime scene; how to collect fingerprints (and feet, lip, and ear prints); how to identify blood splatter patterns, etc. It's not quite detailed enough to be considered a text book, unless the teacher uses supplementary material, but it is packed full of real-life examples, which is why I read it.
This book is divided into five sections:
"The Scene of the Crime"--some crime scenes are impossible for the first responder to completely protect, e.g. the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City after it had been bombed. For one thing, people had to be rescued from the ruins. Some of the more interesting examples in this book involve the movement of evidence off of the scene, e.g. a bullet that passed through a victim and lodged in a passing bicycle.
I was also interested to discover that many states employ 'civilian' forensic technicians (it's cheaper than paying for another police officer). The swab-wielding cop is slowly fading from the American crime scene.
"Working the Scene: the Evidence"--One of the best prints from a nightmarish crime scene came from a Christmas chocolate. Evidently the murderer didn't like nuts and put the chocolate back into the box, along with a beautiful print of his thumb.
Criminals who stage crime scenes are often the easiest ones to catch. One man murdered three people, then dressed up in a gorilla costume and wrecked the house, just the way he imagined an enraged gorilla would have wrecked it, including a swing from the ceiling fan that ripped it to the floor.
At first, the ident officer, Patricia McGuire was puzzled by the print of a four-inch finger tip. After the murder scene was thoroughly analyzed, it became obvious to her forensic team that it had been staged. They checked with the local costume shop, found out who had recently rented a gorilla suit, and arrested him for murder.
"Working the Scene of the Body Human"-- One of the most surprising items in this section is how little DNA is still extracted and processed from crime scenes. Hopefully, as DNA becomes quicker and easier to process, it will become a major focus of a crime scene. One challenge of processing DNA from a crime scene is that it is so easy to contaminate the surroundings with the forensic team's DNA.
Forensic Odontology is another fascinating tool. Be sure to check out the anecdote of the perp who bit himself in an effort to mislead the police.
"Working the Scene: Different Stages"--A short section covering explosives and computers. Even as DNA can reveal a criminal's physical presence, so his computer can reveal the presence of his shoddy little mind, whether it be through pornographic photographs, bomb making instructions, or internet scams.
"Working the Scene: Different Skills"--Another short section which includes the contributions of K-9 units and forensic photographers. Digital photography has actually made a criminalist's job harder because of the ease by which digital photographs can be altered.
This book's numerous appendices delve into the qualifications needed, and types of jobs that are available to people who are interested in a career in forensics. "The Forensic Casebook" is a good overview for future criminal investigators, and could also be considered supplemental reading for TV 'true crime' fans (Hint: Columbo and the various CSI programs really take a beating for their sloppy investigative work).
Great Exploration.......2005-10-07
A great book to explore the field and career opportunities. Very descriptive book. Wonderful for reasearch or leasure reading.
The Science of Crime Scene Investigation.......2005-08-06
Has a good overview of the science pertaining to crime scenes, university programs, and job availability within the career area. Not what I thought it was which was a scientific approach to crime scene investigation. I would buy it for an adolescent seeking information for a potential career. In fact, I am donating it to a high school library after I write this review.

The law does not stand still. Look at the author's newer, and more expensive book Cross- Examination: The Comprehensive Guide For Experts. It covers a lot of the same material and is updated on changes.
Great Advice -- Good Price.......2001-08-18
You can sum up the authors' advice in a few succinct sentences: 1. Tell the truth. 2. Don't exaggerate or embellish the good information. 3. Don't minimize the bad information. 4. Answer the question you're asked, not the one you wish you had been asked. 5. If you're asked what time it is, don't tell them how to build a clock. 6. Don't be arrogant. 7. Don't talk gobbledegook. Say it in plain English. 8. Be courteous. 9. If you don't know the answer to a question, don't guess, speculate, or make up an answer. Say you don't know. 10. Don't try to be an expert in any field other than your own.
It is amazing how many so-called experts seem totally oblivious to these simple rules. Just because you're an expert, don't think you can breeze into court and blow smoke up the jury's britches legs. You may get away with it for a while, but you'll come to grief sooner or later. This little book performs its greatest service by reminding experts how horribly they can self destruct when they try to peddle snake oil. It contains example after example taken from actual transcripts where experts committed hara-kiri by ignoring one or more of the foregoing rules. At the end, the authors give a handy checklist of things to remember before testifying, and a list of "trick" questions asked by lawyers.
My first impression upon opening the package was that the book seemed awfully slender, and the price seemed awfully fat. On second thought, however, the price is a small price to pay for a guidebook which can help keep you out of shark-infested waters.
