Proven techniques to improve market-timing accuracy

Written by internationally recognized trader, author, and researcher Jake Bernstein, Momentum Stock Selection details a method of combining market momentum with innovative risk management to dramatically increase profitable opportunities for both short- and long-term traders.

After briefly defining market timing and market momentum, Bernstein heads directly to the heart of the bookhow any trader can use momentum to increase trading effectiveness. Employing numerous real-life examples and illustrations to explain key points, he gives the reader inside details on:

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Tired of confusing technical indicators.......2005-05-12

As a stock trader your homework is all about studying and testing different market strategies that will help you take advantage of stocks and at the same time protect your gains.

Just always keep in mind that an effective trading strategy is simple and practical. Teaching your self to depend on to many technical and confusing indicators can make you slow in your decision making process or confuse you from the start.

The momentum approach showcased on this book covers bascially technical analysis. The stock market is always presenting us momentum opportunities that dont have anything to do with TA at all. Breakout opportunities occur every day. The trick is to know how to find them fast and approach them successfuly.

There are very good sites on the web where you can access momentum trading strategies that are far more practical to implement. One of those sites is Momentum Stock Trading ( MomentumStockTrading com)

In the end, momentum day trading is all about picking the best stock opportunities and following your buy and sell signals with ease and simplicity. Once you learn to master your momentum trading decisions, you can aspire to produce consistent profitable results.

1 out of 5 stars rehashing the same old, same old.......2004-12-11

It is evident that Bernstein appears much more active in the business of writing books than trading; his earlier book Compleat Day Trader was o.k. but the rest with possibly the exception of his book on futures are a assembly-line like rehash of the same old material with the benefit of a new cover, and a new angle. It seems that the author always espouses a "new" breakthrough method in each of his books but in actuality is simply selling basic, unproven ideas at a high cost, extended over hundreds of pages. For example, in Momentum Stock Selection, you're instructed to find a stock making new highs, and corresponding points on the momentum oscillator which show divergence - THIS signals an imminent price reversal. That's it folks. [But you can keep the 30 or so bucks for me having told you. Unproven. Untested. And not accurate. If you want to use one of the most powerful indicators for probability forecasting, I'd suggest looking at the CCI.

In Bernstein's Stock Market Strategies That Work, the author toys with a bunch of theoretical ideas like the MAC Hi-Lo Channel (his proprietary analysis tool that's nothing more than a Bollinger band which roughly equates to a 9 period setting and a standard deviation of 1). When 2 price bars go above the channel look for a pullback to go long, and when the opposite, look to sell. As usual, the book's examples are often unclear (are you supposed to buy at the breakout above the band, or at the pullback??) and often confusing. But hey, this is another "breakthrough" discovery so I guess the reader should be thankful. BTW, if you're really interested in the MAC channel on the charts of your choice. Simply go to Barcharts.com and then the OPINIONS section and it's Free! No kidding. And that's my point. Save you're money, and look for trading books that are a value for your dollar and not the authors'. My recommendations: Technical Analysis by Schwagger, High Probability Trading by Link, Technical Analysis by Kramnick (sic?) and Swing Trading by Jon Markman of MSN.Com. Good luck and always keep the green eyed monster in check.

1 out of 5 stars So simple, sometimes naive.......2003-07-01

With respect to this book, I do agree that

1) momentum is a very important trading concept whilst MACD is a very useful oscillator type indicator to identify overbought and oversold situations, and thus change of s/t trend, a TA tool which helps traders not to buy high sell low, especially in a day trading environment.
2)the author had written a very easy reading book in a very friendly and understandable way.

However, I can hardly agree that:-

1) the author presented momentum as a surefire weapon in the highly volatile market and can be used alone
2) the author did keep it simple, but it's too simple all the way throughout the 180+ page content. He should go from simple concept to complicated application, and teach readers how to improve its accuracy with simultaneous usage of stochastics or RSI or...In fact, there are many examples/charts illustrated by the author which showed extended period of divergence with very unfavorable price moment that might have already kicked an investor out of his position, in case he/she did not have a strong conviction on his/her position but by sheer reliance on MACD.

As a professional trader, I cant recommend this book to anybody. The quality of this is far below the author's own classic "Investment Quotient" which the author's strength (trading behavioral psychology) rests solidly upon.

4 out of 5 stars Very usefull and easy to read.......2002-08-07

This book offers a simple but robust method of trading on stockmarkets. The presence of many many (sometimes too many) charts makes it possible to read on the beach, not just behind the computer.
The Momentum Stock Selection method is good. Bernstein claims that you can use the method on intraday basis. This is true, but not in the same simple way as he shows in the book, it takes a lot more interpretation and experiments (on paper first is my advice!!).
His rules on do's and don'ts in trading are absolutely valuable and true, and funny to read of you have done all the don'ts already in the past.

3 out of 5 stars just a good read, but not the best trading book.......2002-06-07

this is a good book and well written. very easy to read and understand.

however, it comes across as too simple. the methods that are discussed here does not really give you the confidence that they are sufficient for you to trade properly.

another book by this author on the psychology part of trading, 'IQ the investors quotient', is a much better and strongly recommended read. in terms of market momentum, martin pring's 'trading with oscillators' is more useful, and just as easy to read.

    Book Description

During the 1980s, and particularly since the market crash of 1987, corporations and entrepreneurs have been seeking new ways to finance the establishment and growth of new businesses. One of the outcomes of these efforts has been the hybrid security, generically called "dequity" because it is neither a bond nor a stock. In this work, Andrew Chen and John Kensinger examine the various forms of dequity, describing its characteristics, how it evolved, how it's being used, and what the future may hold for it. In looking at the many financial innovations that blended the traits of debt and equity, Chen and Kensinger find three revolutionary changes that took place in the '80s: the use of debt to increase equity ownership by employees; the transfer of control over corporate resources from managers to lenders; and the shift from owning assets indirectly through corporate stock toward direct ownership of production assets by investors. They fully explore the increased specialization of roles that has resulted in employee control of companies, as well as detailing such practical issues as the tax advantage of leveraged ESOP, the value of organizational capital, innovative methods for reducing the cost of going public, and the benefits of R&D limited partnerships. This is the first book to fully analyze the development of dequity, and will be an important reference source for a variety of individuals, including investment bankers, corporate financial executives, institutional investors, and students of finance and banking.

      Book Description

Muslims have always used verses from the Qur'an to support opinions on law, theology, or life in general, but almost no attention has been paid to how the Qur'an presents its own precepts as conclusions proceeding from reasoned arguments. Whether it is a question of God's powers of creation, the rationale for his acts, or how people are to think clearly about their lives and fates, Muslims have so internalized Qur'anic patterns of reasoning that many will assert that the Qur'an appeals first of all to the human powers of intellect. This book provides a new key to both the Qur'an and Islamic intellectual history. Examining Qur'anic argument by form and not content helps readers to discover the significance of passages often ignored by the scholar who compares texts and the believer who focuses upon commandments, as it allows scholars of Qur'anic exegesis, Islamic theology, philosophy, and law to tie their findings in yet another way to the text that Muslims consider the speech of God.

        Book Description

Studies in Legal Logic is a collection of nine interrelated papers about the logic, epistemology and ontology of law. All of the papers were written after the publication of the author’s Reasoning with Rules and supplement the issues addressed therein. Some of the papers are new; others have been revised substantially after the publication of their original versions. The emphasis is on analysis, not on logical technicalities. Studies in Legal Logic contains chapters about the nature of norms, the role of coherence in the law, the nature of defeasibility, the role of dialectics in law and artificial intelligence, the statics and dynamics of the law, and the consistency of rules. Moreover, it contains a new, simplified and yet more powerful version of Reason-based Logic and extensive examples of how it can be used for the analysis of legal reasoning. The examples deal with legal theory construction, case-based reasoning, and judicial proof. Studies in Legal Logic is primarily intended for researchers and students in the fields of analytical jurisprudence and artificial intelligence and law. It should also be of interest for readers interested in the philosophy of logic and epistemology.

          Book Description

Fact finding in judicial proceedings is a dynamic process. This collection of papers considers whether computational methods or other formal logical methods developed in disciplines such as artificial intelligence, decision theory, and probability theory can facilitate the study and management of dynamic evidentiary and inferential processes in litigation. The papers gathered here have several epicenters, including (i) the dynamics of judicial proof, (ii) the relationship between artificial intelligence or formal analysis and "common sense," (iii) the logic of factual inference, including (a) the relationship between causality and inference and (b) the relationship between language and factual inference, (iv) the logic of discovery, including the role of abduction and serendipity in the process of investigation and proof of factual matters, and (v) the relationship between decision and inference.

3 out of 5 stars Games don't recreate the full feel of real LSAT problems.......2006-09-03

There are approximately 44 original games in the book.

Like a lot of 3rd party books on LSAT logic games, this book doesn't use real LSAT games and instead the authors have written their own. I don't have a problem with this, but I find these made-up games often don't do a good job at recreating the true feel of an LSAT game.

I found the categorization of the games a bit odd and there was more emphasis on pattern and mapping games than would be justified considering their rarity on a modern LSAT.

Still, the book is ok if you've exhausted the supply of official LSAT problems and are looking for more games to do. It's not great as a teaching tool, but sufficient as a source of extra practice.

          5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-08-21

This book is amazing! It breaks down the different types of logic games into different sections, gives you the best way to tackle it and then gives you lots of chances to practice. This is a definite buy if you are preparing for the LSAT's.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but too general.......2006-08-09

I bought this book looking for a detailed method for solving the riddle that are LSAT logic games. Instead, I found a book that can tell me how to identify the types of games, but leaves me without straightforward methods for solving the problems. A better strategy would be to simply do as many of the offical LSAT problems as you can before you take the test.
However, it is helpful to have quite a few examples of "solved" problems with explanation. With the official test book, you know that you got the answer wrong, but don't know why.
So, if you have the money to spend recklessly, this book will get you further toward your goal of understanding how logic games work, but it may not help you do much better on them without practice, practice, practice.

            Book Description

Few issues are as mired in rhetoric and controversy as affirmative action. This is certainly no less true now as when Ronald J. Fiscus’s The Constitutional Logic of Affirmative Action was first published in 1992. The controversy has, perhaps, become more charged over the past few years. With this compelling and rigorously reasoned argument for a constitutional rationale of affirmative action, Fiscus clarifies the moral and legal ramifications of this complex subject and presents an important view in the context of the ongoing debate.
Beginning with a distinction drawn between principles of compensatory and distributive justice, Fiscus argues that the former, although often the basis for judgments made in individual discrimination cases, cannot sufficiently justify broad programs of affirmative action. Only a theory of distributive justice, one that assumes minorities have a right to what they would have gained proportionally in a nonracist society, can persuasively provide that justification. On this basis, the author argues in favor of proportional racial quotas—and challenges the charge of “reverse discrimination” raised in protest in the name of the “innocent victims” of affirmative action—as an action necessary to approach the goals of fairness and equality.
The Constitutional Logic of Affirmative Action focuses on Supreme Court affirmative action rulings from Bakke (1976) to Croson (1989) and includes an epilogue by editor Stephen L. Wasby that considers developments through 1995. General readers concerned with racial justice, affirmative action, and public policy, as well as legal specialists and constitutional scholars will find Fiscus’s argument passionate, balanced, and persuasive.

              Book Description

The 19th century saw dramatic changes in the legal education system in the United States. Before the Civil War, lawyers learned their trade primarily through apprenticeship and self-directed study. By the end of the 19th century, the modern legal education system which was developed primarily by Dean Christopher Langdell at Harvard was in place: a bachelor's degree was required for admission to the new model law school, and a law degree was promoted as the best preparation for admission to the bar. William P. LaPiana provides an in-depth study of the intellectual history of the transformation of American legal education during this period. In the process, he offers a revisionist portrait of Langdell, the Dean of Harvard Law School from 1870 to 1900, and the earliest proponent for the modern method of legal education, as well as portraying for the first time the opposition to the changes at Harvard.

                Book Description

Being a lawyer requires understanding the process of the law — a mastery of legal logic — rather than knowing masses of substantive material.

Authors Margulies and Lasson explain legal logic to readers in a concise and analytic manner. Flow charts give a clear overview of the process, allowing students to understand how and where every issue fits. Also included are brief summaries of various areas of law. Finally, model questions and answers from past bar examinations illustrate the steps outlined in the book.

A careful reading of the text should demystify the law school curriculum and offer a clear approach to solving legal problems. A reviewer describes Learning Law as "the book to take with you to law school." Learning Law provides a useful conceptual framework for beginning law students or third-year students beginning to review for the bar exam.

                  Book Description

In Prejudicial Appearances noted legal scholar Robert C. Post argues modern American antidiscrimination law should not be conceived as protecting the transcendental dignity of individual persons but instead as transforming social practices that define and sustain potentially oppressive categories like race or gender. Arguing that the prevailing logic of American antidiscrimination law is misleading, Post lobbies for deploying sociological understandings to reevaluate the antidiscrimination project in ways that would render the law more effective and just.
Four distinguished commentators respond to Post’s provocative essay. Each adopts a distinctive perspective. K. Anthony Appiah investigates the philosophical logic of stereotyping and of equality. Questioning whether the law ought to endorse any social practices that define persons, Judith Butler explores the tension between sociological and postmodern approaches to antidiscrimination law. Thomas C. Grey examines whether Post’s proposal can be reconciled with the values of the rule of law. And Reva B. Siegel applies critical race theory to query whether antidiscrimination law’s reshaping of race and gender should best be understood in terms of practices of subordination and stratification.
By illuminating the consequential rhetorical maneuvers at the heart of contemporary U.S. antidiscrimination law, Prejudical Appearances forces readers to reappraise the relationship between courts of law and social behavior. As such, it will enrich scholars interested in the relationships between law, rhetoric, postmodernism, race, and gender.

                      Book Description

The opportunities and options for veterinarians are more varied than ever. Today's veterinary student can choose to train for a career in environmental problem-solving, local community health, food resource management, zoo animal care, space and marine biology, and wildlife preservation, in addition to the more traditional small, or large-animal practices. Last year, only 35 percent of all applications to vet schools resulted in an acceptance, so the choices begin with early preparation for these highly selective admissions standards. Students, parents, mentors, and counselors need to help make sure that such important decisions are based on sound knowledge, and Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements is an invaluable source for essential information. This compact volume, which is updated annually, gives a general overview of the application process, including detailed information on the Veterinary Medical Colleges Application Service and residency requirements. Each of the thirty-one veterinary medical schools in the United States and Canada provides information about campuses, deadlines, specific prerequisites, expenses, and special programs. Extensive tables provide data on veterinary medical applications and acceptances over the last nineteen years. Tuition for one of the top veterinary medical schools can cost as much as $20,000 a year-make sure it's money well spent. The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges coordinates the affairs of the twenty-seven U.S. Veterinary Medical Colleges, four Canadian Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Departments of Veterinary Science and Comparative Medicine, and the animal medical centers. In addition the association fosters the membership's teaching, research, and service missions both nationally and internationally.
