Book Description

"The financial decisions we make in our lives are sometimes not the easiest to discuss but have long-lasting effects. [Opdyke's advice] has opened the door in my relationship to conversations that were a long time coming."
-Josh, regular reader of Opdyke's "Love & Money" column, Florida

Real answers to real questions about money and relationships:

If you're like most people, you're struggling with questions like these. Whether we like it or not, money makes a big difference in the choices we make and the lives we lead. Unresolved questions about money can put unwanted stress on even the healthiest relationships-between spouses, between parents and children, and even between friends. In Love & Money, columnist Jeff Opdyke offers practical personal finance advice, as well as strategies for dealing with touchy financial topics-so that money doesn't end up costing you something even more valuable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and informative.......2005-03-27

As a follower of the weekly Sunday column, "Love and Money", I moved to a new city where Mr. Opdyke's column is not in my Sunday paper. After many unfilled Sundays, to my excitement I discovered that this book was assembled. The book is equal, if not better than the weekly series. I enjoy reading the financial and true life information that realistically plagues our married and family lives. It constantly makes me reevaluate my finances, spending, and budgeting (or I should say "Spending Plans").
The book should be required reading for married couples. Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Book for all ages.......2004-04-16

This book was given to us as a wedding gift. It has been invaluable as my husband and I have built our life together, from pooling our checking accounts, to managing bills.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice on Handling Money.......2004-03-18

Jeff Opdyke takes a hard look at various money problems facing people at various stages of their lives. Although you won't have to face each problem, the advice is sound and the reasoning behind the advice is bound to be helpful in some aspect of your financial life.

One problem, ignored by other authors, is how to handle the situation when an aging parent makes bad (wasteful) financial decisions. Do you sacrifice your own retirement savings to bail them out, or is there a better solution? Opdykes answer is worth the price of the book.

Other topics are covered in a thoughtful manner. This book is easy to read and provides good financial advice.

2 out of 5 stars Love & Money: A Life Guide to Financial Success.......2004-03-02

I saw a brief review of this in a popular news weekly. It sounded like just what my wife and I needed to help us shore up the foundation of our financial house of cards. I logged on to amazon.com immediately to buy it. Amazon was also offering David Bach's "Smart Couples Finish Rich" so my wife and I decided to pop for both. Do yourself a favor: buy the David Back book and save your money on this one. While not completely useless (anything that gets you to think has some value), it raises more questions than answers. Jeff Opdyke, by his own admission, is a late 30's parent of a school age child. Yet, he writes about every stage of life as if from his own experience. And when he gets in a jam, he always refers to his mythical friend, Denise, a financial planner in Northern California. She offers up such good advise I wish she had written her own book. Until she does, the David Bach book tackles many of the same topics (how to discuss finances in an intimate relationship) along with offering a down-to-earth, nuts-and-bolts plan to achieving your financial goals as a couple.

5 out of 5 stars Much to think about...and a great read!.......2004-01-18

This book is an excellent companion to other financial books. Rather than tell you how to save or invest, it talks about the personal sides of money in life. Although most of the book comes from the standpoint of someone in a marriage, much of the material will be relevant for everyone. The point of the book is to make us think about the "other" questions that personal finance implies, such as dealing with financial compatibility with others, kids & allowances, supporting parents in their old age, deciding what you actually want to do with your retirement, and some others. I appreciate Opdyke's candor in talking about the conversations he has with his spouse, as I have similar talks with my wife. This book has given me much to think about, and more to talk about with my wife. All of this is done in a pleasant, easy-to-read style that is not at all "preachy" about what you "should" be doing. A great read, and highly recommended.

      Book Description

This book investigates two issues that have been slowing down the development of equity capital markets in transition economies - slow progress with privatisation and the lack of shareholder rights. Both problems are illustrated with data for the largest publicly traded Russian firms. Furthermore, two theoretical models are developed to offer insights into the nature of both problems. The principal conclusion is that partial privatisation as well as the lack of shareholder rights are likely to be only a temporary phenomenon and both problems are likely to be mitigated as the transition process advances. The book should enhance the understanding of academics as well as policy makers and practitioners of potential pitfalls in fostering the development of equity markets in transition economies as well as developing countries.

            Book Description

The Republic of Hungary has emerged as the leader in capital market reforms among former Soviet Bloc countries. Since 1982 the country has made significant strides towards the privatization of its economy and the implementation of market regulations, serving as a model for other formerly socialist countries. The progress and mistakes of the Hungarian movement towards capitalism are studied here as a model for reforms in other countries in Eastern Europe. Particular emphasis is placed on the legal and regulatory structures that have been established to facilitate the transition. Banking reforms, development of the Budapest Stock Exchange, stabilization of the forint, and many other interrelated reforms that are an integral part of Hungary's capital market infrastructure are also examined.

                    Book Description

It is now almost ten years since the appearance of the only previous volume devoted to the methodologies used in mycorrhizal research. The past decade has been a momentous period which has seen not only an explosiveincrease of interest in mychorrhiza as evidenced by the surge in number of papers published, but also, and most importantly, the welcome development of a greater awareness amongst plant physiologists, ecologists, and microbiologists that the mycorrhizal condition is the norm rather than the exception. Through this same period, sophisticated new technologies (e.g. NMR, RFLP, DNA mediated transformation, immunocytochemistry), which are readily applicable to mycorrhizal research, have become widely available. These changes have given rise to an urgent need for a comprehensive and up-to-date source book of techniques which can be routinely used in laboratories involved in mychorrhizal research to facilitate and increase the effectiveness of their research. This comb-bound work is designed to meet this need. The volumes are divided so that the first part emphasizes a description of techniques applicable to ectomycorrhizal and ericoid systems, while the second stresses vesicular-arbuscular systems. Each contains a mix of papers, written by the leading authorities in their fields, which emphasize techniques, but which also include up-to-date reviews of particular topics such as carbon, metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and applied aspects. The methods whereby, and the extent to which, mychorrhizal inoculation can be used to facilitate revegetation, as well as increases of agricultural or forest productivity are also described.

                      Book Description

In nature, the roots of most plants are colonized by symbiotic fungi to form mycorrhiza, which play a critical role in the capture of nutrients from the soil, and therefore in plant nutrition. Thirteen years have passed since the publication of the First Edition of Mycorrhizal Symbiosis, the book that has been generally acclaimed as the most definitive work on this fascinating topic. The Second Edition co-authored by Professor Sally Smith and Professor David Read has been completely rewritten to cover the significant advances in our understanding of this field.

                      Key Features
                      * Separate accounts of major mycorrhizal types, highlighting structure, development, physiology and ecology
                      * Integrative treatment, covering nutrient transport, roles of mycorrhizas in ecology, applications in man-made environments, and interactions with pollutants
                      * In depth treatment of evolutionary and developmental aspects, plus closer examination of external mycelium, and transport processes
                      * Appreciation of diversity of form and function within major mycorrhizal types, and its importance in ecosystems

5 out of 5 stars The standard reference for mycorrhizal research.......2002-06-29

This book is a standard reference in the field of mycorrhizal research. Since the field is growing rapidly, it is somewhat dated, but still excellent, especially for a life scientist trying to learn about the different types of mycorrhizae. This is a technical book, and parts of it require some knowledge of plant physiology, molecular biology, ecology, or, of course, mycology. Still, it is the book I send people to when they need a reference, and my copy is getting ragged with use.

                        Book Description

This book provides a structured compilation of reviews of what is known about arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. Topics were selected to cover major steps in the life cycle of AM fungi (germination, signaling/recognition prior to colonization, and host regulation of colonization). Aspects of the physiological interaction within the root for which there has been exciting recent progress (regulation of host defenses, bidirectional transport of nutrients, modification of gene expression, and carbon metabolism) are then discussed. The focus then widens to effects of the mycorrhiza upon the whole plant (nutrition, water relations, reproduction, and resistance to disease), and expands further to essential aspects of the role of AM fungi in soil ecology (soil aggregation, and interactions with other soil microbes). Leaders in the field present critical reviews and point toward areas for future research. Therefore, this volume should be helpful for both researchers in the field and those interested in a thorough knowledge of this important symbiosis.

                          Product Description

Mycorrhizae are a type of fungus formed by the relationship between plant roots and soil, and there is a widespread agreement among botanists and soil scientists that mycorrhizae are beneficial to the health and growth of soil and plants. Research into mycorrhizae has grown enormously in recent years. It is now known that these fungi have numerous properties and functions – they promote plant growth, maintain plant and soil health, provide protection against root diseases, they assist production using reduced fertilizer and pesticides, they effect soil structure, nutrient acquisition, root length and root structure. Mycorrhizae have many useful modern practical applications – the re-vegetation of landscapes, golf courses, contaminated soils, the prevention and retardation of leaf dehydration, the maintenance of soil and plant biodiversity – to name but a few. The editors of this book have produced a valuable collection of specialised contemporary information describing state of the art and modern protocols in mycorrhizal research, compiled and presented in one authoritative volume. It will be a valued reference work for botanists, microbiologists, agricultural and soil scientists.

                              Book Description

The rhizosphere is a very complex environment. The interactions among microorganisms and the plant roots are essential for the nutrition, growth and productivity of the plant. On the other hand, the microorganisms also benefit from their interactions with the plant. Rhizosphere studies are of interest to agriculturists, soil biologists, chemists, microbiologists and molecular biologists.

Microbial Activity in the Rhizosphere will be useful to the beginner as well as to experienced scientists. It starts with contributions dealing with the basic concepts in rhizosphere biology and the techniques used in these studies. Further topics include the bacterial community composition, rhizosphere of arbuscular mycorrhizal roots, significance of AM fungi in relation to form and functioning of the root system, the role of microsymbionts in plant growth and health, and the impact of rhizosphere environment on pre-infection behaviour of Oomycetous plant pathogens like Aphanomyces, Phytophthora and Pythium.
