Customer Reviews:
Amazingly exciting!!!!.......2006-10-07
Whether you are a mystery reader or a professional auditor or a CEO/CFO, you will gain from reading this book.
Mr Howard Silverstone shared his experience magnanimously. He guided the reader patiently using easily followed step-by-step approach to carry out fraud investigation.
However, I find (and Mr Howard Silverstone kept repeating in the book) that the facts are over-simplified. I suspected this has been the case to enable non-expert to follow the book.
In essence, this is a book that allows all levels of readers to heighten their awareness on the presence of fraud penetrators and the need to enhance internal controls as a deterrent.
Well-written new edition of fraud overview.......2006-02-10
Fraud is ever present, especially now. Authors Howard Silverstone and Howard R. Davia suggest that in recent years fraud has moved from the periphery of the corporate world to the center of it - from small, unprofitable, marginal companies to the biggest blue chips. The headlines about Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing suggest that the authors are right. They do a commendable job of categorizing and explaining various kinds of fraud and the circumstances that make scams profitable. They offer enough anecdotes to fill a mystery novel writer's idea file for a year. Given that their book is also accessible, intelligible and, at times, even entertaining, we recommend protecting your company by reading it carefully. This may be your opportunity to avoid ever finding yourself at a board meeting trying to figure out "Who done it?"

Book Description
The Asian crisis of 1997-1998 was a major influence on macroeconomic thinking concerning exchange rate regimes, the functioning of international institutions, such as the IMF and the World Bank, and international contagion of macroeconomic instability from one country to another.
Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Stability offers perspectives on these issues from the viewpoints of two Nobel Laureates, an IMF economist, and Asian economists. This book contributes new ideas to the ongoing debate on the role of domestic monetary authorities and international institutions in reducing the likelihood of international financial crises, as well as the problems associated with various exchange rate regimes from the standpoint of macroeconomic stability.
Overall, the chapters contained in this volume offer interesting perspectives, which have been stimulated by the recent events in the foreign exchange market. They provide a useful reference for anyone interested in the development of exchange rate regimes, and represent considerable reflection by economists half a century after Bretton Woods.

Manganese in Soils and Plants : Confusing Proceedings??.......2000-09-14
This is an excellent book if, like me, you are researching soil science and want to find a somewhere to begin reading about Mn in soil and plants. It is however one of the most boring books I have ever read. I would make two further comments about the book, the first is that one can walk away with any conclusion that one wants because a lot of the papers presented here contradict totally. This is probably a reflection on the conference that it reports. Secondly, soil science has moved on significantly with respect to looking at Mn in soil. One could better spent 100 and something dolllars reading some more recent papers. I have however referenced it in my PhD thesis because of its interesting observations of Mn in plants, specifically plant roots. To sum up, it is a good starting place for such an obscure topic but it could have been so much better. My advice is to look at it if it is in the library (and don't worry if you walk away confused, we did), but think twice about buying as there must be more coherant and up-to-date texts available. I hope you find this useful. Anton

Description:
Heavy metal contamination of metal-mined soils is a widespread problem in China. In the restored (over 20years) Lipu manganese mineland, 36 plant species from 22 families were found colonizing, some of which were planted agronomic ones. Heavy metal concentrations in tailings were very high. Minesoils were basically unpolluted, but soils in the remaining mining area and in the vicinity of tailings dumps were polluted by Cd and Mn. Measurements of metal contents in dominant plants showed they were close to those of other mineland plants. Plants tended to have a higher Cd accumulation (as reflected by Biological Accumulation Coefficient) from soil, but have a higher Mn translocation (as indicated by Biological Transfer Coefficient) to aboveground parts. The Chinese chestnut and sugarcane cultivated on the reclaimed mineland were not safe for human consumption, and this agricultural restoration pattern should be carefully reconsidered.

Description:
The impact of oxygen diffusion from plant roots on the soil redox in the root zone in flooded rice bays was investigated using two Australian rice growing soils. The rates of production of Fe(II) and Mn(II) in pore water resulting from the reduction of soil minerals was used to gauge the extent of development of anaerobic conditions and the time taken for equilibrium to establish. Soil concentrations of readily reducible Fe were 13-28 times greater than Mn, making Fe a more reliable indicator of redox conditions than Mn. In addition, Mn(II) concentrations reached equilibrium far more rapidly than Fe, which made the identification of any contribution to soil redox by oxygen diffusing from rice plant roots difficult to observe. Dissection of soil cores showed that more than 80% of the rice root mass occurred in the top 4cm of soil, suggesting that any contribution roots may make to the redox potential of the flooded soils would occur in this region. However, studies conducted indicated that the diffusion of oxygen from the surface floodwater into soil pore water in the 2.5cm layer of soil was so substantial that it would mask any contribution made by rice plant roots to the overall soil redox in this root zone.

Description:
In Montreal (Canada), the mean annual atmospheric Mn concentrations between 1981 and 1990 were stable, followed by a decrease of almost 50% from 1990 to 1992. The reason for such a decrease in Mn is probably the shutdown of a large manganese alloy production plant in Beauharnois, approximately 25 km from Montreal. The objective of this study is to assess the level of air and soil contamination by Mn in the vicinity of this ferroalloy plant more than 10 years after its closure. Air and soil were sampled over 5 days at two and three sites, respectively. Site 1 was located 10 m NE of the closed plant, in the direction of the prevailing SW-NE winds. Sites 2 and 3 were at 50 and 800 m SE from the plant. Air samples were collected in order to determine total (MnT) and respirable (MnR). Soil samples were taken in the surface and subsurface strata. The results show that site 1 is extremely polluted with a mean Mn concentration in surface strata of 266000+/-45000 ppm and 283000+/-23000 ppm in the subsurface strata, while the average MnT and MnR are 21.9+/-13.7 and 3.5+/-3.9 @mg/m^3, respectively. The explanation for this contamination is direct deposition on the soil of solid Mn-rich residue and atmospheric erosion of Mn particles. The situation should be remediated by the public authority with high priority.
