Compact compendium of financial information.......2003-07-14
In this text, Van Horne combines elements of both finance and economics; this results in an outstanding compendium of financial theory as it relates to financial markets. However, the breadth of the material and the detail to which the reader is exposed necessitates succinct dissemination in such a compact text (300 pages). I've found more information in this paperback than most hardcover texts (800 pages or more) that I've read, and at half the price.
My fellow students and I plowed our way through it in one 400-level course in the finance program at EWU. This is advanced material and not for the faint of heart. As I remember it, there was a sizable number of students with weak hearts about half-way through the quarter.

Recent years have seen a substantial increase in the volatility of exchange rates. This trend has prompted economists and finance analysts to question if the observed behavior of exchange rates is consistent with a rational model. Does that volatility, further, hinder trade? Professors Sercu and Uppal examine these issues in the context of dynamic general equilibrium models, explicitly considering the role of financial markets while allowing for commodity markets to be segmented across countries. They show that the implications of the theoretical model for exchange rates in this context are quite different from those put forth by monetary theorists and proponents of purchasing power parity arguments.

Description:
This paper develops a Cournot model of rival dealers placing limit orders with a broker, who in turn makes a market by acting as a liaison between dealers. The broker's limit-book lists the various prices and quantities at which dealers are willing to exchange currency vis-a-vis electronic broking. The size and volatility of the inside spread is simulated relative to dealer entry-exit and the price elasticity of linear order arrival functions. Our simulations reveal non-linear price dynamics from dealer participation in market development, with an additional rival narrowing the inside spread by 1.82% while diminishing its volatility. These findings may shed some light on the ''excess volatility puzzle'' raised by Killeen, Lyons and Moore (forthcoming) as to why price behavior under flexible exchange rate regimes is significantly more volatile than macro fundamentals would suggest. raised by Killeen, Lyons and Moore (Fixed versus floating exchange rates: lessons from order flow. From the supplier: Williamson's paper is based on many assumptions that are not applicable for evaluating government credit programs. these assumptions include: ergodicity, the absence of liquidity and collateral, each lender can make only a single-unit real investment loan per period. If these restrictive unrealistic assumptions are dropped, then Williamson's policy implications are unproven. If nonergodic circumstances, multiloan lenders, the importance of collateral and liquidity are introduced into the system, government credit programs can be easily justified.
