Simplistic.......2007-05-14

I work in a CPA firm and found this book to recommend simplification in writing to the point of absurdity. It is a fact that there is a 'language' for business, and this book spends far too much time advising the reader to take complex or wordy phrases and simplify them to an almost moronic degree. While I agree that business writing is often overly and unnecessarily convoluted, this book seems to ignore a business-like paring down and instead invite the reader to return to elementary-school quality writing. I definitely did not feel that the book was a worthwhile investment, especially at the inflated price for which it retails. It is possible that it would benefit those in the accounting field whose clientele are completely non-business oriented or have little business knowledge.

Excellent for College Students in Business.......2007-03-08

I'm an accountancy major at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This has greatly helped me on my group cases where I write memorandums and other professional communication. Writing hasn't come easily for me (like numbers have) but this book helps me find my weaknesses and gives me suggestions for them. At first I wondered why such a small book was so expensive, but the price is definitely worth it!

The case of Quebec within Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada's case on the legality of secessionist attempts by Quebec, is one example of the tension associated with the relationship between self-determination and a right of secession. The object of the book is to render available to the international community the expert opinions and legal arguments associated with the Supreme Court of Canada's decision on the Quebec Secession Reference. The questions put to the Court in large part concerned international law, leading the parties to the Reference to seek opinions from international law experts around the world as they prepared their arguments which are presented in this book. Self-determination is an idea rooted in human dignity and its meaning and force parallel the emergence of new understandings of the nature of sovereignty and the role of international law in the protection of human rights. The UN Human Rights Committee has identified self-determination as one of the most awkward principles to define because abuse of this right could jeopardize international peace and security. Self-determination, as formulated by the International Court of Justice, requires a free and genuine expression of the will of the peoples concerned. But serious questions remain about the extent of the relationship between self-determination and a right of secession. Does self-determination legitimate internal self-government, association of some kind with another state, or statehood, and in what contexts?

The book undertakes the task of applying the idea of constitutional abeyances to Canada's constitutional experience. Abeyances are areas of constitutional unsettlement, detectable by the paradoxical efforts to preserve them relatively undisturbed. Dr. Thomas argues that the term should be added to our constitutional lexicon, for abeyances are qualitatively different from such ideas as constitutional conventions, myths or fictions. This book examines the constitutional arrangements put in place in 1867, and the mechanisms which enabled us to preserve and accept a lack of constitutional clarity and coherence. What we were able to maintain was a state of "settled unsettlement". The country then entered a period of "unsettled settlement" that was driven largely by Quebec nationalism. These abeyances became the very essence of a new crisis precipitated by the Meech Lake Accord. It is contended that the Accord itself can be seen as a sophisticated attempt to return certain matters to a state of acceptable imprecision. The overall tone and style of Trudeau's interventions, first over Meech, then over the Charlottetown Accord, are contrasted with the kind of constitutional wisdom to be found in the work of Edmund Burke, and with the temperament necessary to sustain acceptable unsettlement. The book's final chapter will address what we can do with our abeyances now. It is argued by Dr. Thomas that we can make far-reaching changes whilst, at the same time, maintaining and revitalizing the wider Canada federal system of which Quebec may yet remain a part. Like the Scots, Quebec nationalists may be willing to settle for a certain level of dependency as long as their civil society can flourish.
