This advertiser-supported book is unusual, and not only because the reader may find it surprising to find advertising pages in a book. Offering various levels of commentary and analysis on a spectrum of risks and risk management approaches, the editor has brought together a diverse group of executives and experts from firms that provide risk management services. Sections cover value and cost, change and continuity, governance and control, integrity and accountability, knowledge and systems, financial risks, legal considerations and workplace and employment practices. While some pieces do have a promotional bent, several are quite sophisticated and merit careful reading. The section on Sarbanes-Oxley implementation, written by an Ernst & Young senior manager, is certainly timely. It is also distinctive, since many of the book's essays focus on Europe, particularly the United Kingdom. The chapter on managing intellectual property risks, written by two experts from Clifford Chance, also offers tips that are well worth remembering. In sum.
we recommend this somewhat surprising package of useful and relevant information.

I think the title of my review says nearly all that need be said.
If you have ever attempted to deal with atheists in the Intranet forums, you will know just how hard it is to answer some of their questions and rationalizations.
This book is an invaluable aid for the apologist as well as anyone who wishes to find truth concerning it's subject material. Of course this does not mean that everyone is going to recognize or acknowledge it's truths, but their lack of acknowledgment affects nothing or no one other than themselves and those whom they may influence.

This book packs a great amount of detail in one volume. Josh Mcdowell is a super writer and presents his material exceptionaly well. I am dean of a small Christian college and this book is a required text for one of our foundational courses.

McDowell's evidence is completely compelling. Verifiable sources of the written record can be seen, touched, and studied today. Can ALL of these written records be fake? No way you can escape this. Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus is presented in a very detailed and resonable format. The evidence speaks for itself. It's like the phrase "he cast out demons with the Devil's Power". They didn't say he DIDN'T cast out demons, they just attributed Jesus' power to the dark side. They had the evidence right in front of them. Lazarus was alive and could be questioned. Who covered up for the Roman Guards? How was Saul changed into Paul, the completely transformed former killer of christians? What changed his mind? People do not die for a lie or the perception of a lie. The disciples that saw Jesus Resurrected had no mass hallucination, delusion or craziness. Jesus did die and came back to life. Powerful evidence stated in very no nonsense, verifiable words. You really have to ask yourself, "Is Jesus really alive?" Yep.

It is rare for a Christian to dare ask the questions that every thinking, compassionate person must have, such as "If God is All-knowing, then free will is impossible, right?" or "Why are all the little Hindu children doomed to eternal torture because they had the bad luck to be born in the wrong culture and religion?" or Why would an all powerful God choose such a limited way to reach us? An all powerful God would never have allowed "Satan" to exist unless he was toying with us, right?
Why did God create day and night on the first day, but the sun on the fourth day? Why was God continously causing or advocating genocide and killing of innocent men, women and children in the Old Testament, but requiring of us to not kill but love our neighbors? My morals cannot accept the killing of ANY person.
This book completely sidesteps serious questions or gives the standard circular answers that I've always heard.
I can sum up what you have to believe for this book to be "A Ready Defense": The Bible is true because it says it is. Without that leap of faith (blind belief), it all falls apart.
This book has helped me a lot by confirming my doubts, and has pushed me further on my way to complete disbelief.

Native Vermonter Aldace Freeman Walker, valedictorian of Middlebury College's Class of 1862, future lawyer and Chairman of the Board of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, gave his commencement speech in the uniform of a First Lieutenant, U.S. Volunteers, and promptly set off for war. After nearly a month of initial training in Brattleboro, Vermont, Walker's regiment, the Eleventh Vermont Infantry, arrived at the Seat of War in early September 1862. For the next twenty months Walker and his regiment occupied the forts in the northeastern quadrant of the Defenses of Washington, drilling socializing and fretting that the war might pass them by.
But in mid-May, 1864, as Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac began the bloody Overland Campaign against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, the Vermont "Heavies," as they came to be known, were called up to active campaigning, joined the famous "Old Vermont Brigade," in the Sixth Corps, and participated in every battle of that unit from Spotsylvania until the end of the war.
Walker's 288 letters to his parents and younger sister are regular, often long, and always lucid and opinionated, Historian Benjamin Franklin Cooling III, who has written extensively on the defenses of Washington during the Civil War, opined that " no better account of the 'life and times' of junior officers in the wartime defenses of Washington remains" than Walker's letters home.

Insightful, but Biased Look at the Justice System.......2001-01-26
This book gives a very interesting inside look into the world of criminal defense attorneys. The author gives her unique perspective on the law through stories of several cases she defended. While I found the book very interesting, especially her explanation of the Menendez case, I couldn't help thinking that she was giving only one side of the story and leaving out facts that didn't support her views of defendant's rights. Still, it was very enthralling and hard to put down.
Dull But Intelligent.......2000-07-29
I have always liked the way that Leslie Abramson handles herself as well as being a fairly big fan of her courtroom practices. So, I went into this book with some preconceived biases. Well, they were all proven wrong.
Abramson is an extremely intelligent woman, and an excellent attorney, but her writing, as well as that of Richard Flaste, is quite dry and rather boring. She has some nice stories to tell, but the manner in which she delivers them is undeniably dull.
The book clearly had no cogent flow to it whatsoever. The book was somewhat hard to get through, but I read on, hoping it lead to something better. But, it truly didn't.
I gave the book two stars simply because the information on the cases, and the behind the scenes stuff was pretty interesting. Unfortunately, that is all this book really has to offer you.
State the facts please!.......2000-01-16
I have to question the factuality of the stories written in this book. My family is the subject of one of the stories Leslie chose to discuss in detail within her book. I have to say I was shocked and infuriated to find my family story, including names and a picture sent to Leslie in a Christmas card, printed without our consent or knowledge. After the initial shock I sat down to read the book and was again outraged at the many erroneous facts intertwined in our brief story. I have to wonder if she even looked at our file or if she just tried to pull from memory and/or embelish this brief condensed story of our life. I do not know all the laws governing what you can or can't print in an autobiography, but I would think that if you were writing about other people's lives, you should have to state the facts and be able to substantiate those facts with documentation. I know that the 6 pages of this book dedicated to my life story has so many fabricated and outright false statements, it is impossible for me to read any of the other stories with any degree of faith that what I am reading is the Real story! I would recommend that anyone who reads this book takes it for what it is, an autobiography about Leslie Abramson. Do not read it to understand the subjects of her cases or what the Real facts behind their cases were.
Enough with the ghostwriting.......1997-03-17
Perhaps I'm being anachronistic, but I don't think an autobiography should be written by anyone other than the subject him or herself. If the person doesn't feel up to the job, he should have an authorized biography published with a vignette explaining his involvement in the project. Whatever her reasons, Ms. Abramson's decision to employ Richard Flaste was a big mistake. If she was too lazy to write this book herself, she should have at least taken the time to find a competent writer. Reading this book is like trying to drive across a treacherous bog in a Ferrari. You hope there's something good on the other side but the journey is so needlessly frustrating and unpleasant, you aren't sure if it's worth it. Let me save you some trouble. Even if you had a Range Rover, this journey wouldn't be worth it. My conclusion: for someone who is so assertive and logical in her public speaking, Ms. Abramson has published a very disappointing autobiography

Leslie Abramson, who gained notoriety first as Erik Menendez's trial lawyer and later as an expert commentator during ABC-TV's coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial, chronicles her life and times in this breezy and insightful memoir. The Defense Is Ready leaves the impression that Abramson is a tenacious, gritty individual who sticks to her moral guns and can't seem to understand why everyone else can't do it, too.
Abramson takes us through her childhood and early years through to law school, where she ranked at the top of her UCLA class. Admirably, she doesn't shy away from discussing the failures in her career; indeed, as a defense attorney, most of the cases she describes end up with her client going to jail. She doesn't avoid the clearly guilty, either; for Abramson, everyone is entitled to a vigorous defense, and this is her only job.
The climax of the book is the case that vaulted her to national prominence: the shotgun killings of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their sons, Lyle and Erik. The brothers' guilt was never at question, Abramson admits, but she does provide evidence of mitigating circumstances never allowed to be brought before the jury. Both brothers were sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole, and Abramson spends the bulk of the book's last chapter demonstrating how the embattled judge in the case used the brothers as a convenient scapegoat to return to the good graces of the public by favoring the prosecutors and denying Abramson and her colleagues a fair chance to tell their client's side of the story. The Menendez case has been analyzed to death by now, but Abramson's integrity and poise cast the trial in a different light. --Tjames Madison

Interesting tales... bad writing........2000-07-14
As someone interested in criminal law, this book was captivating and at times didactic. She is obviously a skilled defender, but sometimes her actions make her seem like she is willing to let murderers run free on a legal technicality. That's hardly admirable, but her hard work certainly is. The text is badly composed, with simple words and some unique grammar. That's why I say interesting book, bad writing. Don't read this book if you can't look past wierd sentence composure to nuggets of interesting criminal law stories.

Whether you favor the Prosecutor or the Defender, this book is a great read for any woman who has an interest in criminal law. By nature I tend to favor the Prosecutor-I bought this book because I'm a law student and had to do a defense summation for a class-I figured Leslie might open my eyes to the world of criminal defense, AND SHE HAS!!!! Leslie tells it straight, but is also entertaining and humorous and HUMAN. I would never have guessed this woman was only 5 feet tall, which is even more inspiration for me because I'm the same petite size. If there are any men out there reading this review, this book is for you if you want (AND NEED) to understand strong, smart women!!!

Real estate owners, on the other hand, complain about the costs incurred through regular spraying. For these managers, new approaches, referred to as integrated pest management (IPM) techniques, can be quite beneficial. This method employs all practical pest control techniques without harming the environment. It requires managers to choose the least toxic pesticide that is effective and requires only minimal exposure. An inspection of the premises by a professional is needed to identify what pests are present. Since resident cooperation is of utmost importance in pest control, a pest control coordinator should be assigned to educate residents about their role in IPM.
