    Book Description

Many CFOs have led their companies to invest in ERP and shared services in order to create leaner, more global organization structures. Today, they seek more radical transformation through business process outsourcing (BPO). CFO Insights is a practical, comprehensive guide to this exciting, fast-growing field. It features expert advice from the CFOs of major companies worldwide, including BP, Procter & Gamble, Dell, and Exel. Step by step, it takes you through the stages of a successful outsourcing solution - from evaluating providers and contracting, through transition planning and risk management.

“We have seen cost reductions every year for each of the 13 years of our outsourcing experience – now, finally, we are seeing the outsourcing market mature. The advancement of multi-client centers will create new value. As new low cost centers spring up around the world I want to have easy access to the opportunities.”
—Ala n Eilles, CFO Downstream, BP

“Outsourcing is not about sitting still. On the one hand, as CFO, you have to be in control, and have the right control mechanisms in place. On the other, this is an evolving relationship where both parties feel empowered and energized to make a real difference in the business.”
—John Coghlan, Group Finance Director of Exel

“My view of the CFO’s role is relatively simple: How do you add value? The CFO has to be in the forefront in understanding, at a strategic level, the relative economics of different parts of the business model – and vitally play a decisive role in deciding what should be insourced and what should be outsourced.”
—Clayton Daley, CFO, Procter & Gamble

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-26

Just wanted to add to the praise of this book. If you're not following the backtesting practice of this book then you're playing slots with your trading (hey, maybe you'll get lucky!!). Some of the material is tough going and will require a second reading, but it'll be worth it. As another reviewer said about this being a kind of in-depth follow on to "Fooled by Randomness", I couldn't agree more. As matter of fact it's what I read just prior, so I couldn't help smiling as I went through this book, because he was putting the meat on the plate that Nassim set! Thank you, thank you..

The previous reviewer (Useless..) that gave it one star clearly did not get the concepts of the book. Did he even read it? That review does not compute. The *only* negative I would say is that if you're just looking for how to do robust backtesting, then the extensive material on the scientific method might be a bit much (but you can always read lightly those sections). But I understand why he put it in there, since it's the entire premise of taking a different and more rigorous approach to TA.

Now back to re-reading Chapter 6... Thank you Mr. Aronson!

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-08-29

I found this book useless..a total waste of time and money.Instead of analyzing the results obtained by using the various technical indicators, the author simply trashes their use,and does so in a preverse use of mathematical formulas, from which the reader gains nothing.I truly felt like my money was taken, for the purchase of the book, under false pretenses.

5 out of 5 stars Make backtesting meaningful.......2007-08-24

Most trading books are pseudoscience or entertaining reminiscences of successful traders. Aronson has done an admirable job of applying the requisite rigor to the many difficulties associated with analyzing the results of historical backtesting.

4 out of 5 stars Best for professional, intellectual and philosophical trading system developers.......2007-08-08

I had thought of using another review title "For fans and followers of Victor Niederhoffer" as inspired by his praise on the front cover. Pardon me to assume the following: if you had not heard of Niederhoffer, the chance is high that you have no prior experience/idea of testing the statistical significance of various TA tools, nor dwelling into the philosophical/scientific aspects of TA at all. Please accept the fact that this book is not for you. For trading professionals who deem themselves philosophical and intellectual (preferably with a college level of knowledge on statistics), this book is an inspiration. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for TA practitioners.......2007-08-01

This book shakes some of your most deep beliefs in TA - and this is a healthy thing. Read it with an open mind.

      Book Description

A state-of-the art treatment offering scientific procedures that require no special scientific expertise, Murphy's unusual new book provides a unified framework for the evaluation of investment assets and strategies--a particularly useful way to conduct security analysis, portfolio management, and trading, and for other general investment applications. Murphy covers practical methods for credit analysis and demonstrates ways to value equities using a pro forma model that integrates forecasting with the detailed use of financial statements and footnotes. Scientific Investment Analysis explains how to evaluate both fixed income securities and equities, as well as options, futures, and investment companies. It illustrates the use of practical dynamic software for valuing complex call, conversion, and other option features embedded in security contracts. The valuation concepts he presents are well grounded in theory and empirical investigation and explained within the context of international portfolio management. The effects of trading, tax, and regulatory environments on market prices and investment strategies are thoroughly discussed. This is an important resource for investment analysts, researchers, advisers, and brokers, an as excellent text for students in advanced investment or portfolio management at upper university levels.

                          Book Description

The French Revolution proclaimed the equality of all human beings, yet women remained less than equal in the new society. The exclusion of women at the birth of modern democracy required considerable justification, and by tracing the course of this reasoning through early nineteenth-century texts, Genevieve Fraisse maps a moment of crisis in the history of sexual difference.

Through an analysis of literary, religious, legal, philosophical, and medical texts, Fraisse links a range of positions on women's proper role in society to specific historical and rhetorical circumstances. She shows how the Revolution marked a sharp break in the way women were represented in language, as traditional bantering about the "war of the sexes" gave way to serious discussions of the political and social meanings of sexual difference. Following this discussion on three different planes—the economical, the political, and the biological—Fraisse looks at the exclusion of women against the backdrop of democracy's inevitable lie: the affirmation of an equality so abstract it was impossible to concretely apply.

This study of the place of sexual equality in the founding moment of democracy offers insight into a persistent question: whether female emancipation is to be found through the achievement of equality with men or in the celebration of female difference.

                          Book Description

Our society's institutional infrastructures--our democratic political system, economic structures, legal practices, and educational establishment--were all created as intellectual outgrowths of the Enlightenment. All our cultural institutions are based on the intellectual idea that an enlightened citizenry could govern its affairs with reason and responsibility. In the late 20th century, however, we are witnessing the disintegration of much of our cultural heritage. Wood argues that this is due to our evolution into a post-intellectual society--a society characterized by a loss of critical thinking, the substitution of information for knowledge, mediated reality, increasing illiteracy, loss of privacy, specialization, psychological isolation, hyper-urbanization, moral anarchy, and political debilitation. These post-intellectual realities are all triggered by three underlying determinants: the failure of linear growth and expansion to sustain our economic system; the runaway information overload; and technological determinism. Wood presents a new and innovative social theory, challenging readers to analyze all our post-intellectual cultural malaise in terms of these three fundamental determinants.

This book proposes that "Intellectualism" was the cause and effect of the "Enlightenment," but that it has been replaced by "post-intellectualism." Wood defines intellectualism as consisting of a search for knowledge, critical thinking, social criticism, and broad liberal arts, all of which he said have been replaced by ignorance, "dumbth" (a decline in analytic thinking), establishmentism (reluc-tance to change the status quo), and specialization, respectively. Wood, who refers to Richard Hofstadter (author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anti-intellectualism in American Life) only once, believes that "post-intellectualism" started with the dilution of universal education in the 1870s (that at a time when only about 2 percent of the population had a high school diploma!), and continued with the 1890s labor movement, the burgeoning popularity of movies and television (in fact, a major reason for Wood's "post-intellectualism" was the replacement of the "Written Word" by the "Electric Media"), and the growing role of government during the twentieth century.
Wood's book is not a worthy successor to Hofstadter. Although he can point to hundreds of phenomena that he claims are post-intellectual, or at least along the trajectory from intellectualism to post-intellectualism, Wood fails to provide a convincing body of evidence for most of his specific charges. Against mass media, he makes a laundry list of such plausible but unproven accusations: artistic exploitation; corruption by commercial support and special interests; being wracked by mergers; a lack of substantive content; the construction of [unrealistic] "reality"; damage to democracy; the promotion of escapism; the propping up of elites; invasions of privacy; an overemphasis on, or promotion of, violence; and being partially responsible for copycat crimes, suicides, aggressive behavior, desensitization, "mean world syndrome," and "narcotizing dysfunction.") I don't doubt that these are effects of mass media, at least among some people, some of the time, but Wood writes as if they all have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, and he provides anecdotal evidence, if that, about such effects.
Most importantly, however, his cause-effect relationship between an "intellectual" world and a "post-intellectual" world is ultimately not clearly supported, nor is the unavoidable implication that the United States was once an "intellectual" country.

                          2 out of 5 stars deeply flawed--big dissapointment........2002-08-15

This book comes with a forward by Neil Postman, who is an excellent, sensitive, and insightful author. Sadly, Wood himself just doesn't measure up to the greatness of Neil Postman. The academic or lay reader would do much better in picking up Postman's own _Technopoly_ and going from there. Finding references in the index to Michael Novak and Peggy Noonan, my initial enthusiasm for the book dropped like a rock. Although he raises a few good points here and there, there are other authors who raise them more coherently and are more free of .... Neil Postman once advocated that critical readers learn to develop an internal "... detector" when they read. Well, my ... detector was going off left and right as I plowed through Wood's text, I'm sad to say. Some authors I'd recommend INSTEAD of Wood include historian David F. Noble, Richard A. Brosio, Noam Chomsky, Kirkpatrick Sale, and especially Theodore Roszack's _The Cult of Information_ which is almost on the same par with Postman's outstanding best work,_Technopoly_.

There is a knee-jerk resistance to socialist, left-progressive critiques and insights about political economy all through out this book, and it maintains what seems to me a shockingly naive & plucky "Libertarian" (e.g. in the political party sense rather than philosophical sense) tone all throughout that is extremely grating. Some of Wood's "suggestions" at the end of the book are praiseworthy, but many of them are completely undermined by some of the other suggestions raised by Wood (a chronic problem of many liberals, which is why I opt for left-radicalism personally). Still other suggestions made by Wood are just plain awful or stupid or both. Wood either has no comprehension of the real nature of power or is very self-deluded about it. Much of the work reads not unlike Walter Lippman from the 1920s, and it's hard to say, reading some passages, if Wood really believes in democracy at all; His mood displays an overall defeatist outlook than one of real moral outrage...there is even a hint of smug elitism in parts of the text. All in all, this is a well meaning but very muddled book and will confuse the lay reader more than help him/her. It's mostly a waste of time. Other authors have said the best of what Wood has to say much better than he.

To be fair, the text IS somewhat dated, too, so Wood's gushing on about "telecommuting" and "distance ed" sound REALLY naive in today's world. These early "promises" of the early 1990s have borne mixed and often rotten fruit in our day. Read David F. Noble's _Digital Diploma Mills_ (2002) for contrast and see what I mean.

                                  Book Description

Reason, Democracy, Society deals with basic points of legal theory and philosophy of law. The main contention of the book relates to the insufficiencies of the legal positivistic approach. Some of its claims are that we must sharply separate what the law is from, what the law ought to be, and that we can know what the law is without appealing to meta-legal considerations. These and other claims are criticized. The author shows that with the legal positivistic approach we cannot know, in all cases, what the law is, if that is equated to the rules posited by the legislator. He also challenges H.L.A. Hart's and MacCormick's points of view, amongst others, about the characteristic corner stones of legal positivism. Some other issues relate to human rights, legal rationality and efficiency and ethics. This book will be of interest to philosophers concerned with law or ethics, those concerned with justice in modern society and to jurists and law students.
