Promising to help its readers master the corporate PC, Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual explains Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (the OS that's meant to replace Microsoft Windows NT Workstation) to the people who use it. Author Sharon Crawford does a fine job of showing how to get Windows 2000 Professional to do what you want, and with the best performance possible. Buy and enjoy this book, if you want to understand your work computer as well as you know your home computer, or if you just want an easy-to-read reference to help you figure out new Windows challenges as they pop up.

Like most of its Pogue Press littermates, this book distinguishes itself by the way in which it deals with its subject software's deviations from common sense. In a model sidebar, Crawford explains why the Permissions window allows you to set both "Deny" and "Allow" permissions on a resource. She aptly explains why not allowing access isn't the same as denying access, and similarly focuses light on other confusing details of Windows 2000 Professional. This approach to software and its quirks is what makes this book different from the (many) other "How to Use Windows 2000 Professional" books that are on the market. Let's hope that Pogue Press continues to steer its writers away from ponderous documentation whose structure is dictated by menu contents. Books like this are fresh air, in a genre that invites drudgery. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional for the people who use it. Beginning with the barest of essentials (logging on and starting programs), this book proceeds through local area network (LAN) and Internet connectivity, hardware administration, and security. Mostly, this is an introductory text, but it covers the OS thoroughly at the user--as opposed to administrator or programmer--level.

Book Description

Windows 2000 Pro combines the friendly interface of Windows 98 with the famous stability of Windows NT. Windows 2000, the successor to NT, introduces many technologies that weren't available in NT, including Plug-and-Play, support for USB devices, power management features, and more. It's 25% faster than Windows 98 and three times as stable. Unfortunately, despite all the enhancements, Microsoft forgot to address one of NT's most glaring omissions: Windows 2000 doesn't include a printed user's manual. In Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual, bestselling Windows NT author Sharon Crawford provides the ideal (and desperately needed) user's guide for the world's most popular corporate operating system. The book covers: Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual isn't for system administrators or OS theory geeks; it's for the novice or budding power user who wants to master the machine and get down to work. Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual is the crystal-clear, jargon-free book that should have been in the box.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting.......2003-11-16

The little red ribbon graphic on the cover of the book says, "Mastering the Corporate PC". Since Windows 2000 is targeted at business users (Microsoft's offering targeted to home users at the time was Windows ME), I had expected more of an emphasis on the likely concerns of business users (i.e. networking, security, etc.) rather than how to use programs like Paint, Wordpad and Media Player. After purchasing the book, I discovered that most of the same information was available, organized in much the same way, on the TechNet section of Microsoft's web site. If Windows 2000 is your first exposure to any form of the Windows operating system, this would probably be an appropriate selection. If you have experience with Windows and are upgrading, I suggest you look for another book.

4 out of 5 stars This book sets on my desk.......2003-05-08

Im just a home user of Windows 2000 Pro. I switched to Win2K because everyone said it was far more stable than other Windows operating systems. After using the other operationg systems Win2k had a somewhat familiar look and feel, but I needed some reference. I rapidly grew tired of trying to find answers on the internet.
Then I bought this book. It has been a great reference for me. I easily found what I was looking for in it. I learned a few things I wasnt looking for.
My advice, if your like me just a home user this book will serve you well. It now sets on my desk within easy reach.

With valuable touches that pertained to Windows 2000 Server, Sharon Crawford spiced this textbook well.
"Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual" left no doubt in providing all the analyses that users of the operating system would ask for. In addition to all the basics (and fundamentals), this text covered every communications tools which came with the OS, including: system maintainance, utilities, troubleshooting, and general networking. The manual even delved into the component interface of the operating system: with its analysis on how Windows 2000 Professional builds upon the interface kernel in Windows NT 4. All the security features, as well as all the factors which contributed to the performance and stability of the OS were detailed.
This 'missing manual' is desirably analytical, without being too technical. It is a very straightforward book, which gives all the details, while at the same time maintaining its concise outlook. Both beginners and expert users of Windows 2000 Professional would be delighted by its dynamic analyses.

4 out of 5 stars A good fit for me.......2002-10-05

As a long-time mac user, making the switch to Windows has been a bit of a struggle. I've figured out much on my own, but some things have remained a mystery. Windows 2000 Professional by Mark Minasi assumed I was familiar with way too much vocabulary. This book by Sharon Crawford takes the mystery out of a lot of little things. It scratches where I itch. Maybe after I master this material, I'll take another shot at Minasi or Pogue.

It was especially gratifying to read on last page of the book (the colophon), "The book was designed and laid out ... on a Power Mac 8500 and Power Mac G3. Ah, memories of home.

5 out of 5 stars As advertised - no more, no less.......2002-02-11

Windows changes with each version - e.g. "Network neighborhood" becomes "My network places", etc. Even experienced users can get lost in the often non-intuitive cascade of menus if the features aren't where you expect them to be.

This book is exactly what it says - the missing complete user's manual. It doesn't claim to be overly technical, but it gets you past all of the essentials. It's well-written and well-organized with useful illustrations, so finding anything is a snap.

After using Win2k at work for years, I recently upgraded my primary home system to it. Rather than hunt my way through the menus, I picked up this book and had both my new system and home network set up in almost no time.

This is the sort of book I may only need to refer to once or twice in my life, but the time it has saved me so far more than compensates for the small investment. If your time costs less than mine or you're looking for something more technical, it might not be for you, but for me it was perfect.

            Book Description

This book fundamentally challenges the radical credentials of post-structuralism. Though Derrida, Foucault and Deleuze claim to have 'deconstructed' metaphysics, their work has much in common with previous attempts to 'end' the metaphysical tradition, from Kant to Nietzsche and Heidegger, and by sociology in general. Gillian Rose shows that this anti-metaphysical writing always appears in historically specific jurisprudential terms, which themselves found and recapitulate metaphysical categories. She reconsiders post-structuralism in this light and assesses the relationship between deconstruction and the earlier structuralism of Saussure and Levi-Strauss. She argues in conclusion that the choice between post-structuralist nihilism and Hegelian and Marxist dialectic is spurious.

5 out of 5 stars The totalitarianism of non-trinitarian Western thought.......2006-05-19

Gillian Rose's Dialectic of Nihilism is one of the best portraits of Reason out of control, severed from tradition or any other restraint. Rose shows how the logic of the Western forensic (legal) metaphor is ceaselessly played out by the social sciences, which find human worth and freedom problematic. In this metaphor, as in a Kafka novel, we are alternately the accused (or the victim) and the judge (or tyrant). The charge is never made clear - but it is only that nothing in the world pleases us, everyone else enrages us - simply because they are not us. Rose sets out the dark and vicious outcome of the intellectual bankruptcy of the enlightenment, which cannot allow that other people may truly be other than ourselves. In 'Hegel Contra Sociology' Rose argued that, even though he diluted it, Hegel realized that the Christian trinitarian doctrine of persons in constitutive relationship was the antidote to the totalitarian tendency of Western thought and the institutions it creates.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing study of modern "radical" streams of thought........1997-07-29

Frankly, I read this a long time ago. But this book was critical for me to get out of the ambit of post-structuralist thinking and to begin to see its flaws. Rose's starting point is Hegel's critique of Kant: Hegel saw both why Kant was led to his radical separation of noumenon and phenomenon and the dreadful intellectual and spiritual consequences of the separation. In the 1970s, post-structuralism (Foucault, Derrida)sought to get past the stale formulas of French leftism by adopting a new and stylish positivism, to put it simplistically. Attempting to by-pass the traditional problems of philosophy, post-structuralism gets ensnared in a dialectic, which, Rose shows, repeats the theoretical problems of the neo-Kantians of the Nineteenth Century. More later.

                Book Description

This book is centered on the "production processes" of crops and pastures, photosynthesis, and use of water and nutrients in fields. It is unique in its combination of great breadth and depth in its treatment of production processes and systems problems. The approach is explanatory and integrative, with a firm basis in environmental physics, soils, physiology, and morphology, in contrast to descriptive or reductionist approaches. Systems concepts are introduced early and expanded as the book proceeds, giving emphasis to quantitative approaches, to management strategies and tactics employed by farmers, and to environmental issues. The systems approach is brought together in the final chapters where production and nutrient cycling are analyzed, for example farms and problems in an uncertain future are considered. The book is designed for use as a text for an introductory course in crop ecology (advanced undergraduates and beginning post-graduate level). In addition, given the wide range of subjects, the integrated references, and the background material included, it can also be considered a "stand-alone" reference work useful to agriculturalists and botanists.

2 out of 5 stars Erroneous, Poorly Organized and Derisive in Places.......2005-03-21

I came across this book as part of a class on quantitative ecology (whatever that may mean). Basically, this text strives to do too much, with little or no emphasis on quality or presentation. Granted, the authors present all the fundamental concepts, defining them succinctly as they are introduced, but in their attempt to show breadth, no particular topic is covered in depth.

For instance, Chapter 10, which covers photosynthesis, could have been separated into three smaller, more focused chapters. The same thing could have been said about Chapter 9, which dealt with water relations. Chapter 9 was especially annoying, because the authors, in an attempt to appear quantitatively rigorous (via the superfluous use of equations), used the same symbols to connote two or three variables, and it was not long before the Professor and the students in the class got confused and gave up on the text.

Then there is Chapter 6, which deals with the aerial environment. The authors repeatedly confused power and energy terms and units. Chapter One was about as bad, but here they repeatedly omitted discussions of the basis and context of their numbers, calculations and equations. I found their decision not to discuss the limitations of the concept of carrying capacity especially disturbing.

Furthermore, the authors tend to be quite derisive in places, especially with regard to Third World cropping strategies (Chapter 5) and organic and bio-intensive agriculture (Chapters 15 and 18). Although I can understand their legitimate scientific criticisms of organic agriculture (and there are quite a few) and bio-intensive cultivation techniques (reliance on human power), their rich country bias shows when they deplore the low level of technological sophistication in the Third World. Apparently, the authors do not seem to realize that not everyone has access to credit and ag extension services, and that assuming that modern farming techniques in America and Australia can be extended to anyone, anywhere. The poor in the Third World do what they can with what they have, and the authors should appreciate this sad state of affairs, even if they don't respect it.

Honestly, the book would have benefitted by some sort of comprehensive editting, as well as a list of symbols and notations at the beginning of each chapter. That way, the reader would not have to flip back and forth to figure out what they meant by this abbreviation or that symbol or equation.

Still, the book did have some good points, those being the final chapter (Chapter 18- Towards an Uncertain Future), a list for further reading at the end of each chapter, and a large and comprehensive bibliography. The discussion on energetic inputs to agriculture in Chapter 15 was decent, but I found their penchant to quote numbers- estimates, projections and statistics, for which there was not a single reference to be off-putting. Finally, the authors do introduce all of the major fundamental scientific concepts underpinning modern economic cropping, so they can not be faulted for this, but the context is extremely limited- mostly the US and Australia, with one or two locations here and there thrown in the mix.

In sum, this is not a good book for study of the various quantitave aspects of ecology, but it might serve as a reference of limited utility. A better book in the same category is W Larcher's Physiological Plant Ecology, which covers pretty much all of the same topics, albeit with much better organization and more focus.

5 out of 5 stars Not for all but great for those who need it........2004-03-12

Crop Ecology is a synthesis of class lecture notes and research collected by the authors over their professional careers. It covers cropping systems from how agriculture is organized at a regional level down to the biochemical pathways of photosynthesis. This is not an introductory text. However, I have found the book to be filled with great examples and illustrations that I use in undergraduate and graduate agronomy instruction. It has been a good investment.

                  Book Description

The question of growth and stagnation in Indian agriculture over the colonial period which is the subject of this volume, has been central to the debates on the impact of colonialism. The early estimates of George Blyn and Sivasubramoniam offered a gloomy scenario of twentieth century Indian agriculture, with yields failing to keep pace with population. This pessimistic picture was subsequently questioned in two ways. Disputing the reliability of agricultural statistics, historians suggested that no calculation of trends in yields was possible. Others recalculated the figures and doubted the basis of Blyn's pessimism. One commentator, Alan Heston, argued that the apparent downward trend in yields was the result of flawed estimation procedures, and needed to be revised.

                    Book Description

Worldwide climatic changes have been raising concerns about potential changes to crop yields and production systems. Such concerns include the ability to accommodate these uncertain effects in order to ensure an adequate food supply for an increasing population. Written by leading international experts, this book is the first comprehensive examination of the potential effects climate change, particularly green house gases, will have on agroecosystems. It also reviews the effects such systems have on climate change itself.
