I picked up this book one day while at a bookstore and was going to just thumb through it but quickly made note of the ISBN# for later reference. This book is HUGE. Weighing in at 1608 pages I'm grateful it's hard bound so it can survive the use it will get.
The level of detail in this book is something you will be thankful for.

3.5 Actualy. Good book, but also a pain!.......2006-10-13
Ok im going to say that this book does have good info for passing the test I took the 220-301 and passed. I really suggest you get the practice questions with this, it will help you understand the information. I havent taken the OS 220-302 yet, so I well give an update when I take that portion of the exam. Yes the book does include tones of information that is not going to be on the test, and tells you after you have read several pages of needless PC history, but I am smarter for it...imho, The question on the actual exams are going to be closer to the Transcender format. But this book is still worth getting w/ the practice question book. Ive looked at the Mike Myers book and I like that one better. Basically all we want in a self-study exam book is the the raw information that will be on the test, and most books do give that. Remeber This test isnt pure vocab/definitions, it forces you to take all the infoyou read in the book and apply it to real world situations. I think most people are looking for a book that is cut and dry and goes hand-in-hand with the test. Comptia is smaerter than that, thats why they have multiple test banks, and are always upgrading tests. You are supposed to be challenged. Anyway these books cost pennies compared to bootcamps, so spend 100 bucks and buy 3 or 4 different ones. If you want something that really close to the actual exam, you wont find it here, buy the Transcender study kit, oh yeah its like 500 bucks. So stop complaining and actually read the book, then you'll learn how to skim through the B.S. and get the information you want.
A good book for those who are returning to the IT field.......2006-07-02
I have been out of the IT industry for a few years now and wanted a refresher course in a few areas. This book does a very good job serving that purpose and contains detailed but easy to read descriptions of complex systems. If you are trying to prepare for the A+ exam without much experience, I would recommend the A+ Complete Study Guide by David Groth along with this book.
Helped me pass the exams........2006-06-07
This book was a big help to me in passing the A+ certification exams. Not only does it include all the necessary information you need to memorize, it also includes test taking tips based on how Comptia likes to word their tricky questions. The practice questions looked a lot like the questions I saw on the exam. They have practice questions at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive test at the end of the hardware and software sections.
Besides the necessary, the book includes background and other information to help you get a solid grasp of the concepts you are reading about. After reading this book, I have a deeper understanding of how computers work. The first section for the Hardware exam was a great read. Well organized and interesting. The second part on operating systems in my opinion is weaker. The reading didn't flow as smoothly but still includes everything you need to know. The software gives more questions to test your knowledge, and it helps you practice in the format that the test will be given.
Overall, I recommend this book.

i got this book as an intro to computer hardware. it provides a very nice overview of all you need to know as well as many good troubleshooting tips. to the guy that says it has too much info.....it provides background on the parts you need to know, nd in doing so helps you understand the overall trend of computers. also the sections of dry humor are awesome. i'm an avid reader, and have read this book from cover to cover, even the supplementary info. this book will show you how computers work. every single thing mentioned can be researched outside the book for more info. only thing i think they could have added is a better explanation of memory timings(from what i remember they mention latency but in passing.) BUT...they do provides all the info you will need to pass the A+ certification test, nothing more. this book as an overview and Upgrading and Repairing PCs 17th Edition for a specific content book will make a very nice set.

Have not had a chance to read cover to cover yet, but it looks very well written and organized so far, so that any normal person can absorb and understand. Wish this was the required text for my class. No doubt it will probably fill in the gaps that my real text missed, since this book seems more grounded in reality, than textbook theory. It may not help me on the test, thought I'm sure it will; but I'm sure it will help me in real life.

As a development officer for a prep school, I was looking for a book that would give me a birds-eye view of issues involved with estate planning. Steve Mapleýs The Complete Idiotýs Guide to Wills and Estates does this masterfully. And, to my relief, in plain English. Impressive for an attorney thatýs taught and practiced for the over 25 years!
In very easy-to-read language, Maple thoroughly lays out the whole terrain of estate planningýfrom having a will to ways to save on current taxes and issues to consider in caring for aging parents. Going beyond mere explanation, heýs packed this book with helpful forms and lists to get the reader started in their own estate planning. I picked up this book to help me with my conversations with donors but I ended up sitting down with an attorney to work on my own plan!

For readers that way find themselves losing interest during the dryer technical sections there are tips, quotes, and anecdotal information interspersed throughout. As a development professional, I was particularly glad for Chapter 18 ýHow Charitable Donations Can Save You Money.ý Iým trying to figure out how I could make this chapter required reading for prospective donors.
More than any planned giving seminar Iýve attended, and for a lot less money, The Complete Idiotýs Guide to Wills and Estates has helped me see estate planning from the donorýs perspective. I highly recommend this book.
up to snuff.......2000-11-15
I'm a big fan of the idiot's guides since they are always clear and easy to follow. The authors do an excellent job of explaining complex terms and concepts so even an ordinary person can understand the reasons behind drafting a will. After reading this book, you'll see that you'll want to do everything you can so that you do not find yourself "intestate" -- then the state fights over what belongs to whom. Although it's difficult to think about dying, it's even worse to think about having all your money thrown to taxes or tied up in court as relatives fight. Prevent this ugly mess by learning the basics of wills and estates. I should add that this book goes well beyond the basics -- even a millionaire could learn a few good tips from this excellent book.

Excellent source of information for anyone who doesn't have a clue where to start. Easy to read and packed with hints. Motivating little scenarios to keep those of us who have been procrastinating in motion. Both my husband (who this was all new to) and myself (with a background in accounting) found it to be useful.

Change happens slowly..........2001-04-30
Simply put, I was shocked by what I read in this book (being a person who firmly believes we live in a just society). I figure this "just" attribute is something left from childhood that is overly naïve and is something that needs to go out with the trash next week. Not knowing much concerning the issue of acquaintance rape apart from some exposure to the issue by hearing sad stories of abuse from college days, I figured I would read up on this issue. I am very glad I did as this book covers the history of rape, how the law has been against the female sex for over 300 years in dealing with rape, and how the majority of rapes are committed by people the person knows. I suggest this book for all people who need to move beyond the objectifying nature of women in society, and to create the space for much needed empathy for all people who have encountered sexual abuse within their lifetime.

Stalking has been described as `psychological rape', `the crime of the nineties', `a celebrity problem' and `a media created moral panic'. However, no satisfactory definition exists and the challenges which stalking poses to both the legal system and society have yet to be subjected to rigorous academic evaluation. This book redresses this situation by drawing upon a range of methodologies to present a thorough and comprehensive examination of the way in which stalking became perceived as a pressing and prevalent social problem in need of legal intervention and a critical evaluation of the efficacy and sufficiency of the legal responses.
Essentially, this book has two objectives. First, to provide a comprehensive account of the process by which stalking came to be regarded as a significant social problem which merited legal intervention and a thorough evaluation of the efficacy of that response. Contrary to what some reviewers of this text (see sept 03 review from 'a reader') will have you believe, this is a well researched book that gives some insight into the difficulties of solving our child abuse problem.
I don't believe that Howitt is an apologist for pedophilia but merely indicates the prevalence of pedophilia, indicating that it is a multi- facted issue without an easy solution. The subject matter may certainly be unsettling for people. Obviously, it is easier to deny the problem, or to keep demonizing pedophiles than it is to begin to address motivations for offending and the success of different methods to inhibit recidivism.
It's a pity that some people confuse this author with the rhetoric of people who may quote or distort his findings. Being personally unfamiliar with "websites which defend child sexual abuse - the kind of websites that refer to man boy love and intergenerational sex", I can't comment on the way that those people have used his text.
I do think that is nothing short of idiotic to blame Howitt for how people may wish to use his text to justify their ends. To use a hackneyed example, should we dismiss the Bible because of people wanting to use it to justify their bigotry?
I am deeply offended by the reviewers assertions that people should "readers do their own research" into the life of Dennis Howitt. I find such an insidious and supercilious remark to be nothing short of slander. He is a chartered (forensic) psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Last available information seems to indicate that he works at Loughborough University in the UK. (...) Furthermore, the company that published the book could hardly be accused of being hack academic press. This text is not the pedophile propaganda that some people will try and tell you it is.
This reviewer treats Howitt as though he is an offender. I think this goes some way to suggest why it is that dealing with child abuse is such a complicated matter. If you're going to demonize anyone who enters into the field and generates discourse, then it's hardly an attractive field to move into. With a lack of academic work in the field, the problem is sure to get worse. It's no secret that child sex abusers benefit from ignorance and silence. Howitt should be commended. not condemned, for this research.
a dangerous apologia for child sexual abuse.......2003-09-02
Denis Howitt's book is quoted extensivly on websites which defend child sexual abuse - the kind of websites that refer to man boy love and intergenerational sex. Men who abuse children need 'academic' work which minimises the nature of their crimes - indeed, suggest it may be beneficial to children. There's a long history of this kind of 'research' going back to the Paedophile Information Exchange in the 70s. Howitt's hostility to any analysis of child sexual abuse which defines it as an abuse of power tells you all you need to know. Men who write books suggesting that children can freely consent to sexual activity without suffering any ill effects let all abusers off the hook. Howitt, like all men who write this kind of book, knows full well who utilises and benefits from it, who it enables to sleep more peacefully at night - not the children that's for sure.
Who is Dennis Howitt- an academic at Loughborough University. But that's not the whole story. I suggest readers do their own research
A good beginning to understanding them.......1999-10-21
I was researching pedophilia when I came upon this book and I'm so glad I had the chance to read it now. It really opened my eyes regarding pedophiles and the goings on within their minds. It also gave me a firmer understanding of possible reform programs for these offenders. Most of all, it ensured me that not nearly enough time and study has gone into the understanding of these people as a solution to the problem. Are pedophiles around every corner as our media would have us believe? No. Do they exist and are they a concern in modern day society? Yes. The point is that only by trying to understand why they do what they do can we begin to keep tragic events from taking place and ruining families and lives across this country. Being outraged and executing them without studying them thoroughly is not the answer people.

This study evaluated the interactions between the inoculation with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith, a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, Bacillus subtilis, and a filamentous soil fungus, Aspergillus niger, with respect to their effects on growth of lettuce plants and on indicators of biological soil quality (microbial biomass C, water-soluble C and carbohydrates and dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase and benzoyl argininamide hydrolyzing protease activities). Water-soluble carbohydrates and microbial biomass were increased only in the rhizosphere soil of G. intraradices-plants. Rhizosphere soil from all microbial inoculation treatments had significantly higher dehydrogenase activity than the control soil, particularly in the soil inoculated with B. subtilis (about 21% higher than control soil). Inoculation with A. niger or B. subtilis increased significantly the urease, protease and phosphatase activities of the rhizosphere soil of the lettuce plants. The foliar P and K contents increased significantly with the B. subtilis or G. intraradices inoculation, alone or in combination. The most effective co-inoculation was observed in the combined treatment of inoculation with G. intraradices and B. subtilis, which synergistically increased plant growth compared with singly inoculated (about 77% greater with respect to the control plants).

The general objective of this study was to measure the mycorrhizal dependencies of Cupressus and Lavandula species, to assess the contribution of Lavandula species to the mycorrhizal soil infectivity (MSI) and to determine the main effects of the association between a Lavandula species (L. multifida) and Cupressus arizonica on the soil microbial activities, on the growth and the mycorrhizal status of each plant species in experimental conditions. Three species of Lavandula (L. stoechas L., L. dentata L. and L. multifida L.) and three species of Cupressus (C. atlantica, C. sempervirens and C. arizonica) were tested. Plant species were inoculated with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus intraradices, to determine their mycorrhizal dependencies in controlled conditions. The results showed that L. multifida and L. dentata were representatives of highly mycorrhizal dependent plant species as well C. arizonica and C. sempervirens. The contribution of L. multifida to the MSI was determined by the most probable number (MPN) method. In six different soils, L. multifida enhanced the mycorrhizal soil infectivity, even more if the soil was P deficient. When C. arizonica and L. multifida were grown together, the growth and mycorrhizal colonization of each species were higher than those recorded when each plant species grew alone. The impact of this dual cultivation on the growth and mycorrhizal colonization of C. arizonica was comparable to those recorded with C. arizonica seedlings previously inoculated with G. intraradices. In contrast, the microbial activities of the soil collected from each treatment were different. These results emphasize the role of ''resource islands'' and ''nurse plants'' of Lavender plants in the regeneration processes of tree species such as Cupressus spp. In addition, they confirm the role of AM fungi as a major factor contributing to the growth and co-existence of each of the plant species (L. multifida and C. arizonica).

The influence of plant diversity on belowground ecosystem processes and feedbacks of the latter on plant growth are still largely unexplored. A previous field experiment showed positive effects of plant diversity on diversity and activity of culturable soil bacteria. We examined soil carry-over effects of these experimental communities on subsequent plant growth and the development of soil microbial communities in pots. We inoculated sterile substrate with soil from the field experiment and then sowed three plant species - Dactylis glomerata, Plantago lanceolata and Trifolium pratense - as monocultures or 3-species mixtures into the pots. We measured the phytometers over a period of 14 months. Thereafter, we sampled the soil in 3-species mixtures to analyze microbial communities. The original plant species richness and number of functional groups had positive soil carry-over effects on phytometer germination. Furthermore, in mixtures, species richness also stimulated short-term biomass production of phytometers and catabolic diversity of culturable soil bacteria. The number of plant functional groups had a positive effect on the amount of prokaryotic phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) but negative effects on the amount of eukaryotic PLFAs and the activity of culturable soil bacteria. The carry-over effects of plant diversity on phytometer growth disappeared with time. However, specific effects of the presence of particular functional groups or species in the original plant communities remained significant and were sometimes paralleled by effects on soil microbial communities. These results suggest that in the short term, soil carry-over effects of plant diversity are mediated by a general stimulation of soil microbes whereas the longer-term effects of particular plant species are more likely due to compositional shifts in soil microbial communities. Although the mechanisms of soil carry-over effects in biodiversity experiments remain to be determined, our study demonstrates that they exist and probably involve soil microbial communities. This 'memory' of soils may be an important factor in ecosystem development.
