Book Description
This book provides a critical analysis of widespread claims about the merits of the "bank-based" German system of investment finance. The purpose of the book is to provide an analytical foundation for these claims, and to confront them with empirical evidence from the German economy in the postwar period. The authors show that these claims are not supported by the evidence. This is an important finding, as it reveals that there is no basis for the view that the German system of investment finance is one that should be emulated by other countries.

If we are moving toward one global financial market, will all national financial systems that determine how businesses raise money look the same? Richard Deeg argues that, despite financial market integration and considerable harmonization in the regulation of financial markets, the traditional structure and economic functions of national financial systems are not inevitably undermined. Using the case of Germany--a country with a strong and distinctive financial sector that is at the center of the pressures of economic integration--the author shows how the unique aspects of the German financial sector and its relationship to the German economy have persisted notwithstanding powerful pressures to change. Posing the German model of coordinated capitalism in which banks play an important role in shaping both firm behavior and the possibilities for state intervention in the economy against the liberal model of the United States and Britain in which the securities markets play a much greater role than banks, Deeg shows how the German model has survived competitive pressures in the international economic system that have pushed Germany--and other countries--toward the liberal model.
This book will appeal to political scientists and economists interested in international financial markets, globalization, and the comparative study of domestic financial markets, as well as in German politics and the German economy.

Book Description
The book considers issues relevant to the European Central Bank in refining and communicating its strategy. It offers a historical assessment of the Bundesbank's strategy of monetary targeting conducted from 1974 to 1998. In contrast to several other prominent studies it is argued that money played a flexible but very important role in the conduct of its policy. It also explores the implications of the identified monetary policy regime in the context of various theories of the money supply process.
The empirical analysis conducted in this study is based on a linear state space modelling approach which offers an appealing and direct representation of common stochastic trends. The framework is less restrictive and it is encompassing in that it does not construe the persistent dynamics as being driven by pure random walk components.

Three areas of planning focus include the due diligence tax review, tax-related contract provisions, and transaction structure. As Europe prepares for the introduction of a common currency, financial market players are moving to adapt to a new environment in which financial markets and institutions will be much more open to cross-border competition. Two different financial systems are responding to the challenges of more competition: the more institution-oriented German-style and the more market-oriented Anglo-American style.
Each type of financial system offers its own strengths and weaknesses. The German system is noted for fostering a long-term outlook and steady relationships between borrowers and lenders in an environment of financial and macroeconomic stability. The Anglo-American system is thought of as providing a more favourable environment for startup firms to obtain market financing, as well as more attractive returns to investors and a more dynamic market for corporate control. On the other hand, the Anglo-American system is faulted for its short-term outlook and lack of attention to other than shareholder concerns, while the German system has been criticized as lacking in innovation and attention to shareholders.
The overall conclusions of this volume are: (1) each type of financial system has strengths and weaknesses, and each can learn from the other in mending its own faults; (2) the globalization of financial markets, the inadequacy of existing pension arrangements, and the monetary unification of Europe are all driving each system towards a middle ground which adopts the advantages of the universal bank and the strengths of the open financial market.
