Book Description
This new edition of the Rough Guide to Cult Movies offers a new improved blend of essential trivia and informed opinion as it takes you on a tour of the most compellingly weird - and weirdly compelling - films in the world. From ''A Bout de Souffle'' to ''Zoltan Hound of Dracula'', this guide selects films to savour in every genre from circus movies to westerns of all flavours - spaghetti and sauerkraut. New genres have been added - gambling and vampires - and this edition includes a miscellany of movie trivia identifying, for example, the four women who have played Hamlet on screen, a peek at celluloid''s greatest back stories (such as the rumours of munchkin mayhem in The Wizard Of Oz) and a personal selection of cult movies from the likes of Johnny Depp, Julie Christie, Kevin Spacey and Bert Kwouk.
Customer Reviews:
Good book but in the wrong way.......2006-11-15
As a romantic comedy, Star Wars is a failure. As a science fiction film, the Annie Hall is a complete disappointment. Whatever other merits these movies might have, there are definitely areas that they are lacking. Which brings me to The Rough Guide to Cult Movies: as a reference book, it is highly suspect. What's notable is that Annie Hall fails as sci-fi because it doesn't try to be that genre; The Rough Guide fails at the very category it aspires to. Which is too bad, because it is often an interesting read.
The failure starts at the beginning of the book with a definition of cult movies that is so broad as to be meaningless. We then a series of chapters representing various "genres", some of which are valid (science fiction, westerns, horror), some of which are ridiculous (Animals, Food, Nuns) and some of which are not even true genres (dubbed, independent, straight-to-video). After this, we get various miscellaneous topics that are thrown in without rhyme or reason, such as a list of top movie grosses followed by presidential movie trivia.
The movie descriptions are often amusing, although there are numerous errors (such as misstating Geoffrey Rush's role in Pirates of the Caribbean), even more omissions (every reader will find his own; one example is that Unforgiven is missing from Westerns) and plenty of movies that are really miscategorized but seem only placed in a specific genre to fill it out.
What saves this book is, even though it fails as a reference book, it is nonetheless entertaining. I am therefore giving this two stars instead of one. It's a rather useless book, especially if you want to learn more about movies, but if you do pick it up, it is probably the most entertaining two-star book that you're ever likely to read.
Great fun, lots of info, but sloppy.......2006-11-10
I bought this book and read most of it in one night; I couldn't put it down because the subject is so fascinating. A huge number of films are given short reviews: some I knew, some I didn't. The tome's small size and attractive design helped me keep reading into the wee hours. But I became gradually more annoyed when I discovered how carelessly the book was written and edited (if there was an editor at all). Misspells and typos abound: Herzog's film on Kinski, "My Best Fiend" is shown as "My Best Friend," thus completely missing the point. Great character actor Theodore Bikel is cited as "Theodore Bickel" - and these are only two out of dozens of similar, inexcusable mistakes. If Rough Guide can't afford a decent proofreader, maybe they should stick to travel guides. If they had only been more careful, the book would deserve an enthusiastic five stars, rather than the grudging four stars I give it.
Dashed Hopes.......2006-07-19
I thought this book was going to be great fun; however, it seems to use a broad definition of "cult movie." What didn't they include? Worst of all, my credibility was lost when in the notes on Suddenly Last Summer they mentioned that Montgomery Clift played Sebastian. Anyone who puts this movie in his or personal cult collection knows that this is patently incorrect. It begs the question, "How many other movies in this lists have the authors NOT even seen?"
Terry Allen
Should have been called 'Popular Movies'.......2005-01-31
THE ROUGH GUIDE TO CULT MOVIES does, in its presentation, follow in the footsteps of what has been a successful formula for Rough Guide books. This guide is a thematic guide to movies in general. The book consists of over 80 categories of movies such as: animals, b-movies, cops, doctors, fantasy, horror, musicals, prison, serial killers, zombies, etc. Each category has a selection of movies which, for the most part, fit the subject. There are also various sidelights thrown into different categories which expand upon the actors, writers, directors, etc. Unforunately, although there is a spattering of cult movies included, most of the films covered are standard fare movies which fit the category. Additional mistakes, such as the wrong year for a movie, are to be found on occasion. The selection of movies for some categories appears almost random with gaping exclusions (the category for zombies lists CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD but excludes DAWN OF THE DEAD and Fulci's ZOMBIE; the category for 3-D lists JAWS 3-D but excludes COMIN' AT YA IN 3-D). Additionally, any information provided for a movie includes: title, director, abbreviated cast, and a short description, which in most cases is shorter than what you can find in a video review guide. If you are looking for a general introduction to popular films in a thematic presentation, that can be found in this book. If you are looking for a book about actual cult films and any kind of discussion about them or their particulars, it is not to be found here.
Pretty good information in a pocket-sized book.......2002-03-20
There are lots of little tidbits of info to be gleaned from this cool little book. Hundreds of cult films are included, though there are some I wouldn't have included (like APOLLO 13, THE PERFECT STORM, SEE SPOT RUN and TITANIC), and some they overlooked (THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, GREASE, THE MATRIX, etc.), but overall this volume has a nice mixture of titles, broken down into many categories and a handy index. Recommended for movie buffs everywhere!

Informative, witty .......2007-04-02
Thorough, well-written and at times a laugh-out-loud read, this book offers a complete crash course for anyone interested in the history of British cult comedy. Ever wanted to learn more about that unique "British sense of humor", well Julian Hall explores and describes this in the perfect amount of detail. Hall writes about fifty iconic British comics, many television shows, and, my own personal favorite chapter, a wonderful look at the birth and growth of American comedy and it's influence on British comedy. The book is an instuctional read for both those knowlegeable about comedy and those new to the subject matter. Hall provides wonderful references for further investigation, as well as a smart and witty style of writing that could earn himself a place in his own book. This is a must read!
Get up to speed!.......2006-12-20
If you want to get up to speed with the UK comedy scene and find out what US comedians and comedy shows influenced British comedy from Eddie Izzard to The Office then this book is the one for you. There's a blog for the book too which is really helpful.

Definitely worth buying!.......2004-08-21
As one reviewer wrote this is an OK time-killer! I started leafing trough this to read about my favourite shows, but soon saw more. Living in Norway I'm not overly familiar with all aspects of American and British television (only the "real hits")
And this was definitely a great way to learn little about unknown shows and facts in America and England televison.
Next to Woody Allen's complete prose this the "ideal bedside companion"
Okay, but no real substitute for watching them........2003-05-05
This "Rough Guide" is pretty rough; it's a pocket-sized trip through it from a British perspective, but that's no real handicap, and it does try to cover not only the shows but also some of the movers and shakers, websites, available paraphernalia, urban legends (like the whole Captain Pugwash character names thing), etc.
The trouble is that this is likely to be of more value to those who haven't been introduced to the shows before - shot through with inaccuracies (the capsule review of "The Simpsons: Songs in the Key of Springfield" gets it mixed up with "The Simpsons Sing the Blues"; "Danger Mouse" is touted as the first successful cartoon exported to the US, a point "Speed Racer" fans would debate strenuously; "Danger Man" and "Secret Agent" were the same show, not two different ones...) and not revealling much to those already in the know, it's an okay time-killer in the end, but one for the casual viewer.

Book Description
The annual seaside holiday became a common experience in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s and it has a central place in popular memory. Its recent decline has prompted nostalgia and gloom across the media, with a spate of newspaper features every summer bemoaning its decline. This is the first detailed academic cultural study of the rise and fall of the seaside holiday in Britain. This book offers an entertaining and broad interpretation of the holidays and resorts.

Network Administrators Survival Guide solves many common network administration problems by providing administrators with an all-in-one practical guide to supporting Cisco® networks using freeware tools. It is a single reference source that explains particular issues, their significance for administrators, and the installation and configuration process for the tools. The solutions are Cisco centric and provide detail not available in generic online information. Network Administrators Survival Guide emphasizes solutions for network managers and administrators of small to medium-sized businesses and enterprises.
Each chapter is broadly based on a network administration function, starting with an overview of the topic, followed by the methodology involved to accomplish that function. This includes the tools available, why they are the right choice, and their installation, configuration, and usage methods. For any given function, Network Administrators Survival Guide covers both Windows- and Linux-based tools as appropriate. Most of the Windows-based tools offer the advantage of GUI for ease of use, whereas the Linux-based tools are command-line based and can be used in automated scripts. Both are significant for network administrators.
Based on author Anand Deveriya’s extensive field experience, this practical guide to maintaining Cisco networks will save you significant time and money. Any network administrator—beginner or advanced—will find this book useful. The solutions to practical aspects of network administration make Network Administrators Survival Guide a must-have reference for supporting your Cisco network.
Customer Reviews:
Provides an overview of the function, tools available, methods for configuration, and usage.......2005-12-06
Network administration problems often have common denominators when it comes to Cisco system management, so any network administrator will welcome Network Administrators Survival Guide, which is offers chapters based on network functions. Each chapter provides an overview of the function, tools available, methods for configuration, and usage. Both Windows and Linux operating systems are covered in tools which take advantage of different operating systems, while author Anand Deveriya's field experience lends to identifying common traps and problems involved in set-up.
Conquering the Chaos.......2005-10-27
Network Administrators Survival Guide, by Anand Deveriya is part of a new trend from Cisco Press I have been noting: they are pushing more hands on usefulness.
This book is intended for the person who has to support a network for a living. However, the reader does not need to be a Cisco expert to read this book. In fact, anyone who would be in a position to need its advice should be astute enough to implement it.
Don't expect the author to explain all of the concepts behind every IOS command given. Deveriya is giving you a quick example of what works to get you going. This book is written for people who need to get things done in a hurry and don't have time to get their Ph.D. in a technology before implementing it. That doesn't mean their is no depth behind this writing. The author is a CCIE and the reviewers include William Parkhurst, Ph.D., author of some of the most technical books on Cisco. In fact there must have been a great deal of laborious rewriting to get it so brief.
Deveriya has practical examples of how to set up several different brands of terminal emulation clients on both windows and Linux workstations. The entire book obviously comes from real world experience. The author not only reveals the diverse diagnostic functionality built into the Cisco IOS, he also demonstrates the tools that can be used on Windows and Linux workstations. The author walks the reader through a case study troubleshooting a BGP meltdown problem on a perimeter router by simply using different ping diagnostics along with show processes cpu. "We" were able to determine the cause and enabling ip route cache on the router solved the problem. "Once again super ping saves the day!"
Great Time/Money Saver.......2005-10-20
The growth of the open source software community in recent years has been nothing less than amazing. And it should be no surprise that software to run on or in conjuction with Cisco products is available as well. The problem is to find, evaluate and decide which open source products are worth taking your time to learn. The time it takes to download, install, and learn enough about the software to begin to get useful information from it is often daunting.
Mr. Deveriya is a network engineer who sets up networds using Cisco technology and products. He says, 'Due to the high cost of commercial tools and the crippling post-dot-com economy, I was forced to look for freeware tools to help me admisnister my network. I spent a lot of time on the Internet searching for the right tool and then even more time trying to configure it to suit my needs. Some tools offer too much information, while others provide too little. Realizing my plight, and that of my fellow Netadmins, I decided to document my experience.'
There is a tremendous amount of money to be saved using Freeware. This book will help you sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Good starting point for web site administrators.......1998-09-21
This book has an answer to most questions you could have regarding web site maintenance, although it is heavily biased towards configuring UNIX servers. Windows NT, for example, doesn't get much of a mention. Also, many of the examples are written in Perl which was a shame as I was more interested in CGI written with shell scripts.
Some topics do not go into enough detail. For example, the section on how to install two servers on a single machine, each responding to different domain names, tells you "what" to do but not "how" to do it.
Where the book does excel, however, is in describing the concepts of how the internet works.

Customer Reviews:
poorly written - overwhelmingly simple introduction.......1999-08-04
The editor of this book could not have possibly played a significant role in getting this book reviewed prior to publication. The editot should have cleaned up the grammar. There were simply too many short thought that could have / should have been grouped together for increased clarity.
No survival for this guide in my library........1999-03-20
Nothing but an overview. Covers very nicely the topics of what can be done. It is extremely lacking of details of anything that you may need to implement. (If you are a system Admin I would hope you would not need this weak reference.) For implementing the SMS product, especially in an enterprise setting, It is a horrible reference.
good for setting up, but lacking in scripting.......1998-02-26
This book is good for setting up the software on the servers and on the clients, and gives an overview of how it functions along with the different services and how they interact, but to truely use sms u need to have some scripts, and this book sorely lacked any sms scripting training or setup, what scripting information was given was very vague...
SMS Adminstrators Survival guide.......1998-01-23
I don't see why everyone liked this book so much. I though it was an OK overview but poor when it got down to specifics. Since SMS ships virtually without docs you need something more than an overview. Rating=3
Okay, but..........1997-12-07
There is a lot of good information in this book. It covers everything the SMS administrator is likely to encounter in the planning as well as the day-to-day operation of an SMS installation.
However, I found that comprehending that good information was a bit of a chore. To begin with, I found the typefonts used for the subsection headings were so much alike that it was hard to see the document structure. After that, I found it hard to follow the text because of the author's tendency to use SMS-specific terms before defining them. I found some occasions where the information presented was flat-out wrong. (E.g., page 314, Table 14.2, Maintenance Manager And The Polling Intervals; the intervals given from Very Fast to Slow are clearly reversed.) In parts, the text read as if it had been translated from Japanese to English and was very difficult to follow.
I did learn SMS from this book, but it was a struggle. Admittedly, SMS is a complex product. Instructing a reader in its setup and operation is bound to be equally complex. But it must be possible to define and present SMS and its underlying concepts in an orderly and coherent manner. That is why I buy a book such as this.
I have read a number of books from Sams Publishing, and I have always been impressed by the thoroughness and clarity with which they presented their subject matter. It was a disappointment to find this book falling short of the quality I have come to expect from Sams Publishing.

Customer Reviews:
Not a survival guide, but a study guide.......2000-05-17
I purchased this book becuase I administer several WinNT 4.0 servers of varying size, cost and importance. I wanted... no wait... needed a book that would accomplish what the title says - A SURVIVAL guide, (i.e. There is a problem, or a situation, or a request, and you need a reference to help when you are clueless).
THIS BOOK IS NOT SUCH!
I have looked at this book countless times and not once did it provide an answer. I am not kidding here, it really helped me 0 times.
I recommend Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows NT Server 4 if you need an answer to a question or problem. It has never failed to provide an answer.
I read the other reviews of this book and it suddenly became clear to me, this book is probably better suited as a study guide for budding MCSE's as opposed to people actually supporting live NT boxes. Since that means it probably serves a useful purpose, I will upgrade my 1-star rating to 2-stars.
Excellent Book and well written.......1998-10-05
I am currently studying for my MCSE and I have found this book to be easy to read and understand. I have read few other books on NT (exam cram and sybex)and these books do not even compare to this one. Most of the books out there are full of technical as well as grammer errors. I found this book to be right on. The authors do a great job explaining and giving you step by step instructions in PLAIN ENGLISH. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is serious about NT!
Essential Webmaster Reference.......1998-01-06
I own and use most of the books available for NT and Internet and web development. I use this one as a daily reference. When we built our first NT 4, IIS 3 web server this book was used all day every day. The book covers the knowledge you really need when setting up IIS 3 as well. I refer to it more often than I do my IIS 3 books!
