Effective whether you're a Photoshop pro or a demanding amateur, The Photoshop 6 Wow! Book contains the widest selection of useful projects, tips, tutorials, techniques, and examples of professionally produced work you're likely to find in one place.
What's remarkable about this book is that every page contains something worth knowing. While other Photoshop books have their strengths, be it Web production, photographic retouching and repro techniques, or illustration, The Photoshop 6 Wow! Book provides in-depth knowledge on just about every aspect of Photoshop 6.
Tutorials covering techniques you might already be familiar with often provide better ways of doing things or additional related information. Where they cover new ground, the results are so stunning you'll want to try them out and add them to your repertoire.
Along with the staples--framing with masks, fixing problem photos, quick masking and blending, filters, and so on--you'll find gems like focusing attention with color, blurring backgrounds while retaining grain, hand-tinting black and white photos, applying images to textured surfaces, and painting with the art history brush.
The book focuses strongly on new Photoshop 6 features such as layer styles, vector shapes, and fill layers as well as improved text handling. This makes it ideal for getting up to speed on the new features and interface enhancements in Photoshop 6, but anyone using older versions would do better with The Photoshop 5/5.5 Wow! Book or The Photoshop 4 Wow! Book by the same authors.
Screen shots, before and after examples, and galleries of professionally produced work in full color throughout make this an easy book to dip into as well as a good foundation for a structured course. --Ken McMahon, Amazon.co.uk

Hard to follow but worth it........2006-05-17
This book takes a nice example and then leads you quick step by quick step on how to get there. I recomend getting a book with cd (if getting a used book) to benefit from the lessons. It probably needs a companion idiot guide as it tends to asume some knowledge its steps are like a recipee not a learn to cook book; but like a wonderful book of recipees you'll either make art or some kind of mess...
Three years later and I still use this book!.......2005-08-29
Photoshop 6 Wow! has proven to be my primary source of learning Photoshop, and I own plenty of other books that I could have used instead. What's great about it is that you can open the book to any page and see something of interest, as the book is chock full of how-to illustrations and examples. It does not have to be read cover to cover or in sequence. The companion CD has all the tutorial files, plus presets for styles, brushes, custom shapes, gradients, and more, which you can copy to your hard drive and use from within Photoshop.
Two criticisms:
1. Certain files on the companion CD can't be opened on Windows pcs, such as \Wow Project Images\Chapter 9\454-Wow Button Samplers\Wow Button Sampler HTML\Open in Browser. The "Open in Browser" file shows no file type in Windows, and can't be opened.
2. You need to set aside time (hours, not minutes) to do the book justice. If you're in a hurry, and need to figure out a Photoshop feature or technique in 5 minutes while the boss is breathing down your neck, this book might not be your best choice. But other than this, I recommend Photoshop 6 Wow!, even to those who have upgraded to a newer version of Photoshop.
Not recommended for Photoshop beginners.......2004-11-20
I purchased this book several months ago, having no experience in Photoshop. From the first I found the book overwhelming and confusing. Maybe it's my style of learning, as I was expecting a more linear style. Something like, "Okay, here's what you need to know to get started" and "Now that you know this, here's how you do that."
But this book, to me, is needlessly complicated. While it's excellent for detailed descriptions, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I found myself reading and re-reading descriptions and information, breaking out the highligher pen, trying to glean the basics from pages and pages of details that were, for a beginner like me, irrelevant. I say irrelevant because I was given information on things I hadn't learned yet.
I wound up purchasing other resources to learn Photoshop. Now that I have a basic understanding of the software, this book is a little more useful, though still too complicated for my taste.
Marvel of Art is Inspiring.......2003-09-28
There are many examples within this book that are just amazing, and this book will introduce you to ways to recreate such beautiful effects. In the process, you'll learn to unlock the power of PhotoShop.
Be warned though, this is not a book that will hand hold you and walk you through "What is a pencil tool" and "how to use it". If you know PhotoShop a little, or an intuitive knack to figure things out, then you can learn a lot from this book.
I found at least one of the guides not to work correctly across platforms (Mac OS vs. Windows), but fortunately with the CD, there were some styles that I can plug in and use immediately. I was able to add some spice to my dull web pages.
So in summary, this is not a general purpose tutorial. It will show you some spot techniques and tricks that give you inspiration and bring some techniques of the trade into your mental palette as well as increase your PhotoShop knowledge.
Lots of fun.......2003-05-12
This is a virtual candy store for a Photoshop enthusiast, and one of my two favorite Photoshop books. The effects are fun and occassionally challenging. If you work through a decent portion of this book you will learn the program. Since most of the examples will work just fine in Photoshop 7, I probably will skip the next edition unless it has a lot of new material. If you know the basics of Photoshop and want to go to the next level this is a good place to start.

Book Description
The recent stock market bubble of the late 1990s and subsequent crash has made people more aware of the need to conduct practical financial analysis. Practical financial economics, i.e., the application of financial theory to practical financial analysis, is explained here with respect to a number of different topics, with a focus on valuation. Largely normative (instead of being theoretical, empirical, or descriptive, as most academic work seems to be), yet solidly grounded in theory (instead of being ad hoc, as much purely practitioner work seems to be), this book represents a collection of articles that are designed to have useful implications for both practitioners and academics. Much of the book is focused on the concept of practical valuation of assets, such as individual stocks, the stock market, and foreign currencies. At least partially because one of the most important financial theories, the theory of efficient markets, makes practical valuation analysis virtually useless by assuming the intrinsic value of any asset is determined by its market price, the subject of practical valuation has been largely neglected in academic research. However, the efficient markets theory itself, being based on a general assumption that investors properly value securities by their trading, requires the very practical valuation that a belief in market efficiency makes useless. Within this context, it is not surprising that individual stocks, such as Enron's, and the entire stock market itself, can be effectively mispriced, as this book shows.

Customer Reviews:
Required Reading!.......2007-09-19
This step-by-step guide to breaking into the online teaching field is required reading for those who want to know the ground truth. Each chapter is well thought out, with nuggets of personal experience and personal preference thrown in to help guide the reader in best practices.
It is easy to read the book cover to cover, and the authors provide plenty of references to find further information you may need to get started. The information about school accreditation and about possible technology needs have been especially useful to me.
Great book.......2007-07-26
This is an excellent book that tells you how to face the real market as far as teaching online. It gives guidelines that will really help you to start your online teaching career even if you do not have much experience.
A very satisfied customer.......2007-05-16
I am an aspiring instructor of online education and found this book to be very informative and enlightening. I would recommend this book to anyone who has the desire to teach online.
~Jibreel
Written for a very narrow audience.......2007-04-22
This book is written for a very narrow audience - specifically those with Master's or Doctoral degrees under their belt. The author even goes so far as to say that people with "only a bachelor's degree will not be able to make a good living but might find some work at the high school level".
There may be a degree of truth to this, but I could not believe they just came out and stated this in their intro. There are plenty of opportunities out there for people with all ranges of experience and abilities, and to throw that wet blanket on the reader right off the bat seems foolish in the extreme - especially given the catchy "Make Money Teaching" title.
I almost bought this book based on the title, the premise, and the favourable reviews it received. After reading the first few sections, and scanning the rest, I left it on the shelf with a "phhfft".
A better title would have been "How to get into online teaching for those with a post-graduate pedigree and little to no computer knowledge". Pass (on the book) and Fail (to be of value to 99% of the readers out there)
The perfect guidebook to online teaching........2007-04-15
It's unusual for me to find a non-fiction book that I couldn't stop reading. This was it. The book came out at an especially good time for me. I was just trying to break into teaching online, and having trouble getting my first teaching gig. This book takes you through that process, in a way that is positive while making a lot of good sense of what to do, and how to do it. Best of all, it helps you understand why to do things a certain way.
I think a lot of people are fearful or hesitant to try their hand at teaching online. All through the book there are words of encouragement and confidence-building suggestions. That's great. The sample documents in the book are a nice touch; instead of just telling readers what to do, the authors show them with examples. I was not aware all these colleges want a statement of teaching philosophy, and that helped, too.
The authors include helpful rundowns on the three main systems for online teaching. The chapter on necessary equipment and technologies helped steer me in the right direction, too.
All in all, this book is quite a gem, a bargain, and a must-have guide for anyone wanting to teach online. I have found it extremely helpful: advice from the experts.
Book Description
Fullest, clearest instruction on string figures from wide variety of cultures around the world: Eskimo, Navajo, Lapp, Europe, many others. Create such imaginative figures as a cat's cradle, a moving spear, a bolt of lightning, pointed stars and much more. 950 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
From the Stringman.......2007-02-07
Considered by many String Figure people to be the "Bible" in this field. It has easy to follow instructions using what has become standard nomenclature. This book is referenced in recent writings probably more than any other. Anyone with interest in String Figures should have this book in their collection.
excellent and detailed.......2003-11-20
Once you master the language of manipulating the string--with a little patience-- you'll find the explanations easy to follow. The selection of string figures was wonderful. A strong collection --a legacy that has travelled throughout the world. Pass it along to your children.
The mother of all string figure books!.......2000-12-08
Ms. Jayne was an interesting woman in her day. She traveled about the world, gathering anthropological research as she documented string figures worldwide. This volume is the result of her work, all the more remarkable because she did this around the turn of the century.
Many figures are included here with instructions in the creation of them, as well as anecdotal information based on her interviews with the people who taught them to her. All of the classics of string figures are included here, as well as more obscure ones she gathered along the way. This is a must for serious students of string figures, not only for the wealth of information and instruction, but also for its historical value.
LA BIBLE DU JEU DE FICELLE.......1999-08-16
Il est très complet et illustré. Toute personne qui s'intéresse aux jeux de ficelle progressera beaucoup avec lui. Ce n'est pas un livre pour débutant.
I was fascinated by this book when I was about 13 years old........1998-11-30
This book is a compendium of string figures with detailed instructions on how to make them and many illustrations. It is based largely on anthropological studies of the East Indies and that part of the world, although there are sections from Native American tribes and a few figures from Europe. My parents had a copy of this book when I was growing up and I was fascinated by it from ages 11 to about 15. I recommend it highly for anybody whose interests run in this direction.
Book Description
The orientation sessions might tell freshman where the student union is-but only the true experts can offer the real lowdown on college life. From making peace with a difficult roommate to choosing the right classes, in this guide college students and recent grads tell freshman all they need to know to get through their first year with flying colors.
Customer Reviews:
Nick B. Herberger.......2007-08-02
I think this book "hit it out of the park" when it comes to giving it's readers a ton of information about the freshman year experience. The author's had an insiders perspective as students in the midst of it and do a great job recounting their experiences and drawing from those experiences practical applications for all.
The freshman year in college is a big deal, a HUGE deal ... it is a transition that few parents and students are prepared for -- what I refer to as "The Perfect Storm". After working on campus in Student Life for many years I have seen how difficult this transition is first-hand. The Department of Education has shown that more that 1/3 of all new freshman will drop out before making it to their sophomore year and fewer than half of all new freshman will graduate from college.
"Navigating Your Freshman Year" gives us some great "real-life" advice on how to weather the storm known as the Freshman Year in college!
Review by: Nick B. Herberger author of "The Freshman 40: everything you need to know about your first forty days in college". For more information, please visit www.LiveYourJourney.com
college life begins with The Freshman 40: everything you need to know about your first 40 days in college
Great gift from mom!.......2006-01-26
My mom got this book for me, so of course, I ignored it for a while. But then I actually picked it up and thought it was really helpful - some points the student authors make I didn't think about and I think will help me act like less of a dork when I am off to college in the fall.
Finally!.......2005-05-05
Finally, someone wrote a book about freshman year of college that is worth reading. It really covers all angles from academics to partying to roommates, etc. But what really works are all the quotes and stories by actual students mixed in. Every high school senior should read this.
Book Description
An excellent source for developing strategies and implementing procedures in order to achieve high productivity from employees. Will help ensure that the people are ready, willing and able to perform. The author uses a wealth of personal experiences to show how a manager can get the job done and enjoy success.

great architectural illustrations.......2005-04-14
A friend reminded me that I have this book. I picked it up randomly when I was an impressionable young kid. It opened my eyes to a whole style of illustration. Now looking back on it a couple decades later, I can see it did actually have a great effect on the aesthetics of the sketching I do at work on a daily basis. How cool is that!
Oh, I had no real idea what the book is about, and still dont, really, but that didnt stop it from being an influential part of my youth.

Originally published in 1909, "Handy Farm Devices" is more than an engaging trip down memory lane. For any small farmer or homesteader, the techniques and devices described in detail are just as useful, durable, and fully functional today as they were 75 years ago. You will learn to build a portable chicken coop, a stone boat (for moving stone), a lightweight orchard ladder, gates that don't sag, and a handy wood splitter, as well as rudimentary farm structures, well houses, bee hives, a baby's cradle, a cheese press and much more. The charming, turn-of-the-century language and useful and inspirational quotes from Shakespeare, the Bible, Bacon, Longfellow and many others make this book a delight to read. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
Dating from the Golden Age of American Farming, this volume is both a tribute to days gone by and a resource for present day homeowners, farmers, and ranchers striving toward greater self-sufficiency. Here you will find hundreds of clever ways to transform those odds and ends that might seem like junk into very useful gadgets and tools, from a treadmill that can power a dairy separator and churn, to a drinking fountain for chickens. Other devices include a rig for moving large trees; a self-feeder for bees; a hand garden cultivator; and gates that lift over snowdrifts. It’s full of useful illustrations and includes a whole section of tried-and-true tips.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book that can save you time and money.......2007-09-25
"Success comes to the man who so works that his efforts will bring the most and the best results-not to the man who simply works hard." Very elequently stated by the author from page three in the introduction of this gem of a little book.
Call me a survivalist, but I feel books such as these are going to become imperative in the future of america for both the suburbanite and country boy alike. Handy Farm Devices by Rolfe Cobleigh is a must own to anyone who owns or is even thinking about owning their own homestead. This book allows you to make just about anything you could possibly need around a private farm/homestead. Just to name a few things that are tucked away in the pages of this litte gem are How To: use a carpenters square, build stairs, temporary animal housing, a cellar, make your own dresser drawers, feeders for your animals, make a chicken coop from a barrel (and other chicken, pig, horse, and cattle housing designs as well), laying cement foundations, simple housing plans, how to build a concrete stone house for $400 dollars, build your own wheelbarrel, plus various orchard and planting ideas as well as other ideas that are so numerous I can't possibly mention them all.
The only thing this book will not do is give you a step by step guide on how to go about doing X,Y, and Z. It gives you pointers and a general push in the right direction, but it doesn't give you in depth direction. I only see this becoming problematic if you were to take on the task of building one of the houses described in this book. However, I don't see in depth directions being an issue for most of the devices mentioned. Even a modest amount of ingenuity should be sufficient in most cases. In the end this book delievers all that it reasonably can in less than 300 pages. A must have for those interested in homesteading, and those who believe that true self-sufficiency will become a necessary skill in the future of this country.
Great!.......2007-09-06
This book is a "must have" because of all the great ideas.
Today you can just buy all the stuff but this would be very costly.
This little book shows how to build everything you need by yourself.
I'm starting a very small farm for selfsuffiency and was desparate about the costs of all the needy things.
This book will spare me hundreds of $, it's really great.
Historical and functional.......2007-08-13
This book is full of historical information about devices, buildings and just useful things. This guide would be useful in areas or farms trying to live without elecrical equipment and in cases of disasters to make do until some assistance with more modern means arrives. I enjoyed the writing and would recommend the book to those looking to do things more "natural".
Great Ideas...don't expect to build them........2007-05-12
This is a great and fun little book full of old fashion devices. Treat it as an idea book, but don't expect explanations of how-to here. For at least half of the devices you won't need any explanation, the others look the info up somewhere else.
Depends on what you're looking for..........2007-01-10
This was a nice, fun book to read... but it was essentially useless for actually helping you build any of the things it talks about (and gives interesting history and info about). So for a practical DIY book, it's useless, but for a book just to learn a bit about this stuff and it's history and get a frame of reference, it's not bad at all.
