Book Description

More great tunes in the world-class New Real Book format. Along with many standard tunes, Volume 2 features over a dozen each of the best tunes by Chick Corea, John Coltrane and Horace Silver. Like all Sher Music fake books, it features composer-approved transcriptions, easy-to-read calligraphy, and many extras (sample bass lines, chord voicings, drum appendix, etc.) not found in conventional fake books.

3 out of 5 stars Need an Eb Book? If not, skip this..........2005-09-25

Good book. Terrific selection. But in two tries, I only received an Eb book, which is fine for alto and baritone sax players, but not if you need a C or Bb book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a legit copy of the jazz musician's BIBLE!.......2004-03-06

From playing in both my high school's and college's jazz ensembles, it was clear to me that "The Real Book" was the bible of jazz standards. No instructor was without a copy. As a bass player, there have been countless times were I was just tossed a photocopy of a page from the Real Book and the instructions of "Here, do a walk over this chord progression."

A number of things made this book the most demanded of its kind. First of all, it contained hundreds and hundreds of jazz songs in a single volume. Second of all, it mostly followed a one-page-per-song format, showing the most essential parts: the chord and structure changes, the introductions, and the melody. If a song seemed to center around something like a particular repeated bass line, then that line was also shown. And last but certainly not least, the type face and unique "hand written" look made it the by far easiest book to physically read (no eye strain!)

Unfortunately, The Real Book was next to impossible to hunt down. No music stores carried it, or at least admitted to carrying it. It was pretty much an under-the-counter item that you could only get if you knew somebody. I guess these $50 books were always secretly copied and bounded in some local guy's basement, in hopes of skirting all the legal copyright issues.

Finally, Sher Music Co. has taken the original Real Book, got copyright clearance from each and every living composer, and in so doing even got to correct many mistakes based off the the composers' very own lead sheets. They also threw in a number of full-page photographs of jazz greats. The result is the only LEGAL, updated, and widely obtainable version of the original underground book.

One of the reviewers here seemed to make the gross assumption that this is a piano book. It's not. It's a book for everybody in the band. The fact that there are C, Bb and Eb versions of the book should tell you this. I've always been amused by "Piano/Vocal" sheet music books for bands that never even had a piano or keyboard player. For rock bands, they usually attempt a bad transcription of the guitar on the treble clef, and an even worse transcription of the bass on the bass cleff (written an octave down, of course).

Which brings me to the reason why this book was always called "The REAL Book": it's because it didn't take the shortcuts that "Fake Books" take. "Fake Books" are called such because they allow you to "fake" the song, i.e. dumb-down some chord changes, play it in a presumably easier key, and usually even try to adapt the whole song to the single instrument of piano.

It's so great to see a legit copy of this book in print. If you play jazz, this is the one book always worth investing in.

1 out of 5 stars Not compatible with just keyboard.......2001-06-27

Chords used not compatible with keyboard where a bass has to be played due to split section of KB. Also music designed for an orchestra as it is divided into seperate sections for various instruments and drum solos. Too complicated. Was expecting that the music would include "riffs" or runs already written out but found none. Maybe ideal for professional musicians already in a band, but not for individual keyboardists gig.

4 out of 5 stars The Over The Counter Gigger's Bible..........2000-10-07

Prior to the publication of this book, serious Jazz professionals and students had to hunt down copies of the elusive "REAL BOOK", that improvisor's bible found only UNDER the counter at CERTAIN music shops (which you'd ultimately get pointed out to through your local musician's grapevine. ) At times hard to read, prone to fall apart and vanish off the bandstand and not always 100% accurate, it was definitely the book you needed to make it through gigs if you weren't a walking encyclopaedia of tunes.

Finally, along has come this book. It's legal, the print is easier to read, the pages are easier to turn, and it has some cute pictures and even hipper tunes... but is it better ?

Yes and no. The one problem I have with it is that *for me* on the bandstand, simple is best. If someone calls a tune you've never heard before, you want to be able to turn to it, glance at the changes and hang with them. This book, in contrast, sometimes throws in extra bells and whistles delightful perhaps to a student and certain musicians, but a nuisance if you just want to see a skeleton of the basics so you can hang with the changes. My philosophy is : just give me the basic chords and melody... and its my job as an improvisor to throw in the rest. On the other hand, most fake books (arrangement wise) really leave you on your own.

The plus side of this book... it definitely has hipper changes and a hipper selection of tunes than the alternative (if that's what you're looking for and that's your taste), has introductions, endings, material more relevent for ensemble practise that you wouldn't find in the alternative and, for example if there's a particular vamp or line that defines the tune, the piano, bass and horn part might actually be written out even the drum part at times.

So is this book for you ? If you're looking for a fake book that's willing to "help you out" and you don't find that a distractor, definitely, yes ! If you're a student and don't know a lot of tunes, definitely, yes ! It has a great selection of tunes that will help you expand your song repoitoire, and also that's nice and cleanly written. A book such as this is a great investment... its not something you get and hide away under the bench... its something that you'll probably pack alongside your instrument everytime you go to a gig because people WILL be calling tunes from it.

5 out of 5 stars Great -- One of Three.......2000-02-10

Great books, lots of tunes to jam on and use on a gig. Very easy to read while playing. However, as with all of these "fake" books, the changes should be considered only as a guide. You should still listen to a recording of these tunes by a jazz master and compare the chords used on the recording to those printed in the book. There are many versions of of a tune as well as downright inaccuracies in the book. Still, a valueable aid.

        Book Description

All My Relatives challenges the prevailing notion that the work of all American writers reflects a sense of determined individualism. Highlighting works by Frank Chin, Sandra Cisneros, Maxine Hong Kingston, N. Scott Momaday, Tomas Rivera, Leslie Marmon Silko, Alice Walker, and John Edgar Wideman, Bonnie TuSmith shows that a "first language of community" exists within the cultures of ethnic Americans and is evident in their literary texts. TuSmith suggests that the proper understanding of these texts demands that we dismiss an interpretive frame borrowed from European-American literature.
All My Relatives provides a new way of reading popular works such as The Woman Warrior, The Joy Luck Club, The Color Purple and John Edgar Wideman's Sent for You Yesterday. TuSmith's study will appeal to general readers as well as students and scholars of American culture, ethnic studies, and American literature.
"An original contribution to the field. TuSmith's willingness to step over invisible boundaries and to draw parallels between the cultural contexts of several ethnic groups at once is refreshing and important." --Amy Ling, University of Wisconsin, Madison
"Ambitious and timely . . . a significant work that Americanists will want to read. TuSmith does an excellent job of clarifying the meaning and significance of the term "ethnicity" in relation to American literature."--Ramón Saldívar, Stanford University
". . . TuSmith establishes the importance of traditional (usually oral) modes of expression to ethnic texts that are both relational and accessible . . . . [S]hould become a standard point of reference in the emerging field of comparative American literature."--Choice

          Book Description

On September 8, 1952, English-language CBC-TV went to air for the first time, albeit with the logo upside down. Apart from that one little glitch, the terrified group of talented young people who put on that first live show launched the new network with imagination and verve.

In Here’s Looking at Us, Stephen Cole takes the reader on an eye-opening, evocative, often funny journey through the first 50 years of CBC-TV, from the excitement of filming its first drama starring future author Timothy Findley, to the thrill of bringing Olympic gold medal hockey games to the entire country thanks to satellite technology.

This popular history of the shows, people and events that define the first half century of the network is told through the reminiscences, profiles and oral histories of more than a hundred on-air and behind-the-scenes personalities, including Norman Jewison, Robert Goulet, Don Harron, Juliette, Anne Murray, Norman Campbell, Don Chevrier, David Suzuki, Wendy Mesley, and Jonathan Torrens. Their stories are complemented by a wealth of archival photographs, memorabilia and illustrations – more than 350 in all, many previously unpublished. Both text and images provide snapshots of Canadian life past and present as viewed through the lenses of CBC-TV cameras filming docudramas, comedy shows, news programs, variety shows, children’s programs and sports events.

From the network’s longest-running program, Country Canada, to one-night tours de force, Here’s Looking at Us is a celebration of the quietly entertaining as well as the most memorable Canadian television moments of the past 50 years.

I am goin to make this short and sweet because this is the third time I have had to type this because your site keeps crashing.( have been on sites before this one and many sites after with no problems so I am goin to assume it is just yours)
          problems:
#1 ordered a book for class and recieved it late.
#2 was sent the wrong book in my first order. sent that book back and recieved a replacement.
#3 the replacement was again the wrong book.
#4 was charge for 2 books while i only have the one in my possession. i sent the original book back and was told i would not be charged for the second one. no corrections have been made to my account so far.

1 out of 5 stars A book that is neither worth the money, nor the time.......2003-10-11

Unfortunately I was requried to buy this book for a class. An absolute waste of money. Nothing is covered in any sort of detail at all, while the pages are dedicated to output from compilers. For an example, the information covering file Input and Output consists of a single paragraph. And it's wrong. C++ Primer Plus is a much better alternative. It's cheaper, bigger, more correct, and is actually a useful book. I want my money back Barbara! (And I suspect that you're the one who wrote the first review and that you also paid someone to write the second.)

5 out of 5 stars Well wriiten, accessible and fun........2001-06-16

Johnston's book should replace Deitel & Deitel. It covers the essentials of C++ and object-oriented programming more thoroughly, and it has realistic debugging/troubleshooting discussions. The appendices give the reader a refreshingly complete one-stop reference for all the little details that I tend to forget.

The book has lots and lots of sample code with careful discussion of what's being done and why. The troubleshooting and debugging advice alone is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for new and intermediate C++ programmers!!.......2001-06-12

Few titles have ever gotten me really excited, but I have to tell you, "C++ Programming Today" has. The text is organized with the new and intermediate C++ programmer in mind. Each chapter leads the reader into new and more challenging concepts that are built upon topics presented in previous chapters. Throughout the book the author uses lots of color and highlighting which to me, is a lot easier on the eyes and makes the book a more enjoyable read. Another useful feature is the use of 4 Stoplight icons to tell the reader when a C++ programming method is either a "Good Programming Practice" (Green Stoplight), "Be Cautious" (Yellow), "Stop! Do Not Do This" (Red) or a Stoplight with yellow flags to represent a "Troubleshooting Tip". The appendices (over 115 pages) contain lots of great reference information such as C++ keywords, operators, string class, file IO, hex notation and ASCII character codes. I was REALLY happy to find out that this book also came with two CD's - the first one contains the full working code of all the examples Johnston uses throughout her book. The second CD is a full-blown copy of Microsoft's Visual C++ 6 (Intro edition). The only thing I didn't like about the book was that the perforated quick reference card was printed on the same paper as the rest of the book, in my opinion it's not strong enough for a reference card you'll be referring to all the time. (I took mine to Kinko's and had it laminated) All in all I would still highly recommend this book.

Written for the intermediate or advanced C++ developer, 3D Game Programming with C++ provides an outstanding tutorial and reference to the essentials of today's DirectX game programming. This book doesn't skimp on the nitty-gritty details of serious 3-D graphics, but it's also approachable for any competent C++ programmer.

This title is remarkable in two ways. First, it covers the essential features of today's 3-D virtual worlds--like textures, lighting and fog, vertices, and transformations--while providing a thorough yet comprehensible introduction to the powerful DirectX game platform. It covers all the visual effects you'll need to create state-of-the-art games with DirectX. A second standout section is the author's reusable, clearly documented C++ classes for simplifying essential APIs involved in DirectX, including DirectDraw (for 2-D graphics) and DirectSound (for sound).

The text focuses on the "serious" 3-D graphics mode of DirectX--Immediate Mode (IM)--which is used on some of today's hottest games. Direct3D IM programming is tough, but this text is one of the best at showing how it's done. Besides DirectX objects and APIs, this book provides some of the "rules" in pseudo-code needed to program successfully with 3-D graphics. This title also serves as a reference with over 400 pages on DirectX classes, including over 150 pages on Direct3D. (Plus, there's material on some of the math required for 3-D graphics). Overall, this book will serve as a valuable resource to any programmer who works with DirectX on a day-to-day basis.

Armed with this remarkably clear and thorough title, any C++ programmer can start learning 3-D game programming on the Microsoft DirectX platform. This book sets a high standard as an introduction for serious game development using DirectX and C++. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: DirectX overview, graphics hardware, 3-D virtual worlds, COM basics, DirectDraw APIs and C++ classes, Direct3D Immediate Mode basics, 3-D transformations, textures, MIP maps, lighting, rendering primitives, optimizing techniques, physics (detecting collisions, DirectSound APIs and C++ classes), DirectInput and joysticks and C++ classes, Artificial Intelligence (AI) basics for game characters, DirectX reference, 3-D graphics math reference.

          Book Description

This book is currently the only detailed book in print that explains and uses techniques of accurate physics modeling to create highly realistic 3D games. All of the examples and source code presented are designed to harness the power of Microsoft's latest version of DirectX-a graphics programming API that greatly enhances the work of developing high performance PC graphics. Currently the only detailed book in print that explains and uses techniques of accurate physics modeling to create highly realistic 3D games.

1 out of 5 stars bait and switch.......2006-10-19

I know it's rather dated now and there are lots of alternatives but it's so bad I just had to post. someone bought me this book a few years ago and I never really had enough time to read it. in the meantime I learned a lot about programming Windows GUI apps, and a smattering of OpenGL. recently I've had nothing to do so I picked the book back up.

this book doesn't have any information about making games.

the only way to learn how to program is to have some examples to look at. you can know all the theory of classes and objects, COM architecture, encapsulation, etc etc but if you don't have some actual code to look at your chances of writing an actual working program are nil.

not to mention that I think focusing on graphics before you even know anything about the guts of the game is pretty stupid.

          There. venting over.

          1 out of 5 stars A Good Start..........2002-12-17

I do have more important things to do than write reviews on books I have purchased; however this book has been such a disappointment that I'd like to keep you from wasting your money as I have. Luckily the book is hefty enough to make a good doorstop, so im not completely out.
Im not trying to say the author doesnt know what he's talking about, nor that you won't get anything out of this book. In fact the first 2 chapters are a phenomenal overview of 3D games, written in a concise manner that is easy to follow, and in fact somewhat entertaining. I just wish the rest of the book followed suit.
Chapter 3 is where the book really begins to fail. To begin with, the text immediately defies it's title. This book should have been called 3D game programming with DirectX, for the third chapter introduces you to the world of Direct3D, and virtually ever portion of code in the book is based upon DirectX. While it is immediately evident that DirectX is a powerful tool, and to program games in Windows environments it will be a necessary tool for you to learn, this text will do little to help you do so.
From the fourth chapter on, the text dives headfirst into DirectX code that is simply a horror to navigate through. The author doesn't make the code any easier to follow; you are bombarded with page after page of code, in fact pages 51-83 contain "a simple DirectDraw Encapsulation that is easy to follow," then leaves a mere 4 pages to explain a few of the function called in the previous 33 pages of code. It would have been nice if the author had used some comments in his code to let you know what is going on, but anything of the sort is sparsely inserted into the multitude of unexplained functions, reserved words and variables that leave you totally in the dark about what you are doing. I bought this book to learn about the fundamentals of programming graphics and game logic, and instead Im given page upon page of directX code that restricts me to programming on windows platforms rather than the C++ the title promised. Any idiot can copy code as the author expects, but learning what the code does, how to improve it and adapt to your specification is certainly more desirable.
This book may serve some use as a reference book, as the appendices in the back contain a massive amount of DirectX function overviews. However, by the time you learn DirectX, newer versions will be released, and will make the apendices covering DirectX 7 less useful, if not useless.

The real disappointment here is that the author really knows what he is talking about, but fails to convey it in a manner that makes learning possible. This could have been an excellent book, but without solid explanations of the overwhelming amount of code, the book fails.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible teaching tool, only good for reference.......2002-10-25

As far as learning how to program 3D Games, this book stinks.
Over half the book contains reference sections of the different DirectX methods, and if that is what you want then Ok, but if you want ti for anything else you are better of saving your money.

1 out of 5 stars This books suck.......2002-06-28

This book provides almost no examples of anything
it is a shame for the author torelease this book

          2 out of 5 stars Please explain.......2002-06-02

Let's say, like me, you wanted to get a book on 3D Game Programming With C++, without knowing C++ beforehand, and then read it, and begin making games right away.
          Not going to happen.
This book tells you quite a lot of interesting stuff about games and how they work under the hood, but as far as code goes, and putting it all together, all the author does is give you a list of functions and a hard-to-read encapsulation, and then say "your turn".
He gives you NO explanation WHATSOEVER on where to write the code, etc, etc (I tried every way I could think of to enter the code on the disk, but I still got 110 errors ....
The first couple of chapters are enlightening, but by the third, you begin the code, and get left behind by the author.
My suggestion? Don't get this book. Learn C++ FULLY and then pick up some books on Physics and AI (this book may prove more helpful to you later on down the track (as a reference, it could be pretty handy)).

            Book Description

This book for today's beginning programmers presents the Java language and object-oriented concepts without overwhelming computer science terminology, but covers many complex topics that are required for the Java programmer. It is written in “plain English,” with a wide variety of sample programs; and includes such practical information as instructions for setting up the Java™ 2 Software Development Kit from Sun Microsystems, and compiling, running, and debugging code. Packaged with a CD-ROM that includes all of the software beginning users will need to learn Java, the book is clear and easy-to-read, with excellent visuals. It has a large variety of fun ways to run program examples along with easy-to-understand figures, tables, and appendices. Presenting first an overview of the language, it introduces Java fundamentals, including keywords, operators, primitive data types, Strings, and arithmetic. It then proceeds through class hierarchy concepts, introducing the JApplet and JFrame classes, and presents control statements, loop, and arrays. Object-oriented concepts, writing classes and methods, static methods, interfaces and specific listeners are discussed; and advanced topics, such as Java I/O, Java Archive files, and package and classpaths, round out the book. For programming professionals and software developers who need to learn Java, as well as those just starting out in the field. Because of its summary tables, glossary, margin glossary, comprehensive appendices, and figures, this book is an excellent Java language usage reference.

Sadly, I was required to purchase this book for an introductory Java course. The concepts presented are too basic to justify the price for this book, if purchased new. You can just as easily learn the same concepts from the excellent tutorials available online at Sun's, IBM's and other's websites for beginning Java developers. If you insist on a book, I suggest Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java," which is cheaper in print and also available at no cost as a PDF download.

            5 out of 5 stars A must read for Today's java Programmers!!!.......2004-03-19

In studying for my java certification exam I found the topics in Barbara's book very usefull. One of the fascinating phenomena about this books is it wealth of examples and its "Learn it fast" method which has made the book really commendable.
Topics on writing your own classes I think was one of the best for me.
            Props to you Barbara!!!

2 out of 5 stars Good idea- bad implementation.......2000-05-25

When I picked up this book, I had no programming experience at all. Now 3 years later, I have successfully learned C and VBScript.

Feeling confident, I picked this book up again in the hopes that I could learn C++ before I had to take C++ in the fall at school (University of Michigan).

I don't reccomend this at all.

The author commits 2 mortal sins. The first is that he doesn't take the time to explain key programming concepts in depth. This could be a huge source of confusion to a newbie.

The second is that he doesn't comment the book's code and there are frequent errors which left me wondering what I was coding. I dropped this book after the 7th chapter. Save yourself a headache and money and avoid this like the bubonic plague.

3 out of 5 stars A good concept ruined by errors.......2000-03-22

The idea is a good one; teach the user the basics of C++ and object-oriented programming by building a text editor step by step. Unfortunately, there are just far too many errors in the code listings which will become an exercise in frustration for the uninitiated. Is the program not compiling because of my errors or his? Should that line really say what it does in the book, or is it another typo? The text does a decent job of explaining the concepts involved. I did have questions that weren't answered in the book, but there is no way to avoid that -- nobody can anticipate every possible question. I have reached the half-way point of this book, and though I no longer have enough faith in the code as it is being presented to continue, I now feel that I have enough of a grounding in the subject to tackle a more comprehensive (and more accurate) volume. If that is what you are looking for, then I can recommend this book to you.

            5 out of 5 stars A very helpful book.......2000-02-11

I think that this was a spectacular book. This was the second C++ book I read, and compared to the other one, this was awsome. I learned a lot from this book, and I am now making my own games for the computer and marketing them, thanks to this book.

            5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......1999-08-18

I don't know what the hell those last 2 people are talking about, yeah sure, it may be missing a paragraph, but i've finished the book and there isn't a glitch in my software, and i am no working on my own webpage editor, using only the information i learned from ONLY this book (ONLY). aND IT'S NEARLY DONE!

            (only only only)

            5 out of 5 stars A Pedagogical Breakthrough.......1999-07-20

I've made it to about page 170, and I am impressed that this is one of the best computer books in print. I've struggled with numerous books on C and C++. This one is the best. The author takes you by the hand. You've got to be patient, and give him a chance, but he does it. All of a sudden, after having spent time with this book, I notice that I can look at other books on C and C++ and understand them at a glance. I think Mr. Rinehart deserves some kind of medal.
