3 out of 5 stars Good information, very dry.......2007-02-18

This book has good information but is very, very dry. I had to fight very hard to not fall asleep at times.

Kovacich does make some very good points about balancing the information security needs with the needs of the business. He also stress that information security needs to utilize existing business processes and be aligned with the goals of the organization. This is the best material he provides and details in several chapters.

1 out of 5 stars Incoherent gobblydegook.......2006-09-01

There's simply nothing useful in this book. One would have to have never heard of the Internet or the Web, and never to have worked anywhere, to benefit from it. The author repeats infosec and management bromides ad nauseum, waves the bloody flag of 9/11 to puff up the importance of the field, and introduces new acronyms faster than the Pentagon.

It's also frequently incomprehensible, due to the author's poor control of English grammar.

If you're in infosec, don't let your bosses read this -- they may think you're as full of hot air as Kovacich.

Also note that at least 3 of the 5 star reviews below are by sometime coauthors of Kovacich.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the INFOSEC professional.......2006-06-16

I personally think this book (actually having read it impartially) is not good for any Information Security professional, corporate or government (IA, IAM, IASO, ISSO, ect), but, if you had to place it in any category I guess it would be in the business management end of communication compliance (maybe for a Policy Compliance Officer). Also I really think that some of the other reviewers here must have been working to promote this book. I unfortunately say this because the author creates entirely too many unique and extremely complex management policy theories on communication development, which frankly gets way off the subject of INFOSEC, and even has him chasing his own tail in the narrated scenarios. The author even goes so far as to concoct and create possibly 20-30 new acronyms (as if you didn't have enough already as a real INFOSEC professional), which almost became a little comedic by the end of the book, especially when hearing even the author try recap each chapter and make each new theory tie into another new theory. Although I'm sure the author is a very distinguished professional in his own right, I unfortunately found this book weak to incorporate into any of my perceived Information Security plans. Do yourself a favor and skip this one and move onto the next, and make sure the books you choose on this topic do not try to reinvent the wheel.

5 out of 5 stars The Security Officers must have book.......2004-01-08

Once again Dr. Kovacich has excelled. He has produced an updated version of already 'must have' book for any information security officer. It is the sort of book that is useful to both the experienced information security officer and to the person who is new to the area. The book is written in a format that makes it very readable and also that you can easily find that piece of information that you can remember seeing but can't exactly recall where..

I wish that he had been writing this type of book when I first started out in the Infosec field. If you only buy one information security book - make sure it is this one.

5 out of 5 stars Practitioner's perspective.......2003-11-25

Dr. Kovacich has updated one of the classic management works for the people who are responsible for the overal design, development and delivery of a comprehensive, enterprise-wide protection program. There are lots of books out there that will assist those who have technical responsibilities for security in doing a better job. There are very few that help develop the manager's who must harmonize people, processes and technology to address the rapidly increasing range of risks that can impact organizations that are all becoming ever more dependent on information technology to accomplish their objectives. If you are now or aspire to be a manager or director of information security for an organization this is an essential guidebook that will advise and assist you in meeting the challenges inherent in that role.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but nothing new.......2002-06-24

This is a reasonable introduction that covers all the important things. The focus is (as it should be) on money management, and very simple (but effective) technical analysis. Support & Resistance, trendlines, and moving averages are the primary mechanisms used. I thought it was a little confused, at parts, and found myself comparing it to John Murphy's Visual Investor. They both seem to have a similar target audience (people new to technical analysis). On the one hand, The Magee book covers money management which Murphy seems to do a poor job covering in his books (Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets has a bit on it, but nothing extensive -- none of his other books mention it at all), but the Visual Investor gets the nod for just being a better written effort.

If this is your first book on TA, you should be fine, although I think Visual Investor covers the topic better. If you are already familiar with the basics, I would pass this one over for a more advanced book.

    Book Description

When is a political trial "good" or "bad" in terms of responsible governance and fairness to individuals or groups? Professors Abel and Marsh define, evaluate, and justify the usefulness of various kinds of political trials, going back through history to answer these questions in practical terms. They point to basic assumptions and various theoretical approaches and assess specific court practices and cases, while showing real dangers and opportunities that have been part of our history. They cover cases involving the establishment and free exercise clauses of the Constitution, including privacy, religious, medical, bioethical, and health-care issues that are of major concern today. This history is important to political scientists, legal scholars, lawyers, historians, and others concerned with civil rights.

      Book Description

Areas of professional practice, such as law, psychiatry, and the behavioural and social sciences, overlap at numerous points in terms of underlying concepts and basic research. They also intersect at an everyday level in their work with individuals whose multiple problems simultaneously require attention from legal, mental health, and social services professionals. Behaviour, Crime and Legal Processes explicitly sets out to close the gaps between the professions. It addresses the questions that arise at the meeting-points and cross-roads of different backgrounds and spheres of activity, thereby helping people working in these different fields to grasp the nature and implications of each other's perspectives and adopt a better-informed approach to inter-disciplinary work.

4 out of 5 stars The real story behind a nasty judicial election in Alabama.......2000-03-18

If you're not a political insider, but you're willing to patiently study the intricacies of legal challenges to election results, you'll be amazed at what Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Perry Hooper's opponents tried to do to circumvent election laws to defeat him. It's unfortunate that these sorts of cases--which usually involve absentee ballot irregularities, vote total discrepancies, challenged ballots, etc., as well as complex statutory requirements--are so complex that you could never really figure out what's going on from reading newspaper coverage of them. It really takes a book like Johnson's to bring it all out in the open.

[Full disclosure--I've known Johnson for about two years and count him as a friend, though we've never worked together or lived in the same city.]

The book focuses on Chief Justice Hooper's race in 1994 (Johnson was intimately involved with Hooper's campaign), but it's also a great (and realistic, I'm afraid) picture of political strife and election fighting in Alabama. And unfortunately, Hooper's race is hardly the only example of this sort of thing. What's most disturbing about this sort of episode is that, by calling into question the integrity of our elections, it automatically undermines the legitimacy of everything our governments do. It's disturbing that there are so many people willing to jeopardize this legitimacy for the sake of one candidate or party victory (or, in many cases, one's own job). But, as Johnson recognizes, given human nature, it's really not surprising.

Johnson pulls no punches in this book. In fact, as an Alabama resident, part of me doesn't want anyone to read this book because it reflects so poorly on politics in our state. (As if Alabama needs more bad publicity in that area.) On the other hand, truth and the rule of law triumphed in the end in this case, and there's no story worth telling more than that.

The book does suffer from typographical and other editing errors (e.g., forced transitions between passages and structural difficulties in some chapters) that are more frequent than one usually sees in books of this nature. However, they're all of an editing/printing nature, and not errors in grammar or fact. Perhaps they resulted from a rush to get the work into print. Overall, though, Johnson's story (and his honest telling of it) is so compelling that the editing and printing problems shouldn't prevent most readers from being fascinated with the book. In any case, I'd have no trouble giving five stars to a more closely edited second edition.

        Book Description

The how and why of criminal justice policy making is frequently overlooked in criminal justice texts. Stolz fills that gap with this reader, which introduces students to the study of criminal justice policy making at the federal level by drawing on the discipline of political science. Each chapter includes:
      • academic and government publications that acquaint the reader with federal criminal justice policy-making structures and processes BLcriminal justice policy-making issues related to each branch of government
      • one or more political science frameworks, used to explain how governmental structures and processes affect criminal justice policy Stolz begins with an introduction to the background of federal criminal justice policy making. She then moves to the three branches of the federal government involved in the process. In addition, a chapter on non-decision making, where policy makers do not consider certain alternative policies, is included. Each chapter begins with a careful introduction by the editor and concludes with recommendations for further reading, including important electronic resources for further consideration. The selections in this work include academic and government publications and speeches that help to shed light on this important area of criminal justice studies. This unique volume provides the tools for analyzing how criminal justice policy is made.

            Book Description

In Due Process and Victims' Rights Kent Roach critically examines dramatic changes in criminal justice in the last two decades. He argues that increasing concern by courts about the rights of those accused of crime and by legislatures about the rights of crime victims and groups who are disproportionately subject to some crimes, such as women and children, has transformed debates about criminal justice. He examines recent cases in which due process and victims' rights have clashed and concludes that, in most instances, victims' rights claims have ultimately prevailed. He concludes that the future of criminal justice will depend on whether victims' rights continue to develop in a punitive fashion or whether they inspire increased emphasis on crime prevention and restorative justice.

This is the first full-length study of the law and politics of criminal justice in the era of the Charter and victims' rights. It examines changing discourse in the courts, legislatures, and media, and the role of women, young people, minorities, Aboriginal people, and crime victims in criminal justice reform. It builds new models of criminal justice based on victims' rights as alternatives to Herbert Packer's famous due process and crime control models. Roach draws on criminology literature about the growth of a 'risk society,' in which the risk of crime is more easily calculated and controlled, as well as writings concerned with restorative and Aboriginal justice.

              Book Description

Cases connected with the troubles in Northern Ireland have been tried by a judge sitting without a jury in `Diplock Courts'. Given the symbolic importance of the jury within the common law tradition, this study offers the first systematic comparison of the process of trial by judge alone with that of trial by jury. The authors determine the impact of the replacement of jury trial with trial by a professional judge on the adversarial character of the criminal trial process.
