As the computer becomes more entrenched in everything we do, so too has it invaded the crafting domain. Yet beginning crafters and experts alike who may have a working knowledge of the more practical aspects of their computer's capabilities often have barely begun to explore its creative potential. Computer expert and self-described "computer mom" Kay Hall knows exactly how to teach such things to the computer novice eager to use that expensive piece of equipment for more than paying bills and sending e-mail. With extremely readable text and dozens of diagrams (actually, black-and-white photos of the computer screen illustrating exactly what she's describing), she walks us carefully through the basics of printer hardware, crafting software (everything from simple greeting card and calendar programs to Sierra's Print Artist and Adobe PhotoDeluxe), design elements (layout templates, fonts, clip art, scanning), and various printable materials for ink-jet printers. She offers good general coverage on paper-craft materials like decorative scissors and punches, embossing powder, and glitter pens, and she does not neglect the finishing steps of sealing, laminating, and binding.

The 40 projects are reasonably well explained; as Hall points out, the step-by-step instructions presume understandably that you've at least a nodding acquaintance with your software, computer, and printer, and that you've read the first half of the book, which explains all the details. An eight-page section shows each finished item in color. The projects themselves, unfortunately, are on the juvenile, cutesy side, but for anyone wishing to learn how to apply their own creativity to this virtually limitless medium, the book is probably still a wise investment. There's a lot of background information here, as well as great at-a-glance tips and excellent item-by-item listings of all the materials and where to find each one (computer/office stores, craft stores, specialty suppliers/catalogs); a directory of vendors with full contact information; a good bibliography that includes publishers' Web addresses; a printer information worksheet so you can document all of your own printer's handling of each type of project; and even ideas on how to market your computer crafts. Note: Hall works on the graphics-friendly Macintosh and most of the diagrams show a Mac screen, but she does explain general settings and how to access them on a PC. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars great for beginners, but very basic and outdated.......2006-09-01

A beginning crafter with little computer experience will probably really enjoy this book. It's got some great very beginning, easy projects.

If you have any graphics and graphic software experience at all, this book will waste your time. It was written in 1998, which in Internet years is approaching the stone age. Sorry to bias the stats, but I'm a graphics professional and was looking for more like some of the new image tranfer technique books.

5 out of 5 stars The Computer Crafter's BEST Resource!.......2001-01-12

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!.......2007-01-26

Regardless whether you're daytrading or not, it's full of layman's terminology in order to understand the complex nuts and bolts of trading in general. Yes, there can be information overload as one reviewer stated ... which is why I found this book invaluable. It's technical, without being stodgy and complicated. The sidebar definitions are fabulous for quick access to terms. I found it to be logically and succinctly organized ... and allows the reader to learn as little or as much as they need. Ms. Bentley states up front that daytrading may not be for the lighthearted, but even daytraders needed to start somewhere. With many individuals trading from their desktop computers, it's important to learn as quickly as possible with as much correct information as possible. Take one trade at a time, utilize the directions ... do the "faux" tutorials on other sites where you don't have to lose money. Then if you find daytrading IS for you, "Online Day Trading" can be your bible. Thanks greatly, Ms. Bentley ... it helped me considerably!

4 out of 5 stars Read it, but You will need more specific strategies.......2005-08-04

This book is ok for a trader that needs to start from scratch. But you will be needing more specific trading strategies.

Keep in mind that the stock market doesn't really care if you are beginner. The rules and the trading opportunities are the same for every one. When you trade you compete against more seasoned traders, therefore you MUST go beyond the basics and employ a clear strategy to make your buy and sell decisions.

There are many "fantastic" strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as a stocktrader. Test, test and test again.

Complicated systems that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com)

In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow your proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2004-11-26

This book was a waste of money. It's meant for beginners that aren't familiar with the terms and concepts of stock trading in general. If you don't already know these terms or the basic concepts you shouldn't attempt to day trade. If you do know these terms and concepts, then this book is a waste. The day traders survival guide is a much better intro book and I highly recommend it over this one. Other recommended trading books to start you off are High Probability Trading by Marcel Link and Trading for a Living by Alexander Elder.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for explaning the nuts and bolts of day trading.......2003-11-29

I wanted a book that would take me step by step through all the technical day trader jargon and explain what all of it meant. Getting Started in Online Day Trading by Kassandra Bentley was just what the doctor, or in this case, the beginning day trader ordered. She takes a very solid approach to explaining what the stock market is all about, what day trading is all about, the procedures of doing day trading and the pitfalls of day trading. She is not shy in pointing out other books in order to gather good day trading information. This shows that she is very open to learning herself. Her book does a good job of not assuming that the reader already knows all about day traderese. There are plenty of sidebar notes that refer to terms and phrases within each chapter. This is a very good way of reinforcing what your have just read. One specific area that was very clear in explaination are the terms bid and ask. While other books use these terms almost interchangably and do not explain correctly who is the buyer and who is the seller, she does an excellent job of clarification on this subject. This point is probably obvious to old pros, but her insight that a beginner is not savy to these nuiances is good thinking on her part. She also goes into some detail on charting and day trading methodology, but not too much in depth. If anything, this was the only negative about this book. However, after reading other books on day trading, I believe that this book is the most straight forward and understandable of all of them. The book is well thought out and very concise.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for beginers that I've ever read.......2006-09-14

A MUST READ for any beginner. If you're looking for your first book on Stocks, look no more, just buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for beginners.......2006-08-23

This book is highly reccomended for all beginners. This book will give you the basis for everyting you want to know about the stock market. Period!

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Understandable.......2006-08-12

I loved this book. It talked about every facet of the stock market, but didn't go overboard with jargon. I knew absolutely nothing about stocks and after reading this book I am ready to learn more. It was well written, interesting, and, unlike some investing books, the author was not trying to sell anything. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to invest but has no knowledge of the subject. I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good beginning investment book.......2002-02-05

This book was an easy read to learn the basic terminology. And it's a nice reference book with a good "stock" glossary at the back of the book. After this, you'll be ready to read something a little for philosophical like Peter Lynch's masterpiece "One Up On Wall Street".

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the beginner investor........2001-03-30

This well written book gives the beginner investor the information needed to understand investing in stocks.

The book goes through setting your goals, assesing your risks and rewards. It teaches you about common and preferred stocks and the basics of buying and selling stocks.

There is a chapter on different investment strategies and then the book takes you into fundamental and technical analysis of a stock.

Finally the book touches on mutual funds, rights, warrants, and options.

All in all this is an excellent book and is one that any beginner investor will learn a lot from.

    1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2001-02-11

The book touches upon certain investment subjects such as TA FA and news reaction in very limited detail which in my opinion could be a serious disadvantage to the newcomer with naive knowledge gained from the book. The book should of stuck to giving an overview of what is on offer on the Internet It should definately of included a chapter to the risks associated with investing online. I think the reference made to Momentum investments is also not correct.

4 out of 5 stars A nice intro and overview of US online investment services.......1999-07-20

A well organized book about US online investment services. But I would like a more extensive coverage of mutual fund and european investment services, maybe it will show up in the 2.edition?

I like the combination of this book and "Common Sense on Mutual Funds" by mr. Bogle, they are complementary!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Resource.......2004-07-07

This book is an amazing resource to find factual information needed to successfully represent clients in the practice of law. Recently, another lawyer asked me for advice on how to locate medical information about a surgical procedure that caused pain and scarring to his client. Although I do not do med mal cases, I knew this book would have the information he needed. I pulled out the book and there was Chapter 12--entirely devoted to medical resources on the Internet, including a heading "Starting Point Web Sites for Medical Research." Both of us were impressed, and my colleague wrote down the title and authors to order the book as soon as he returned to the office! The book includes other chapters on Accessing Public Records, Backgrounding Expert Witnesses, Competitive Intelligence Research, Statistical Research, and more. A resource that should be in every lawyer's office!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use - Even for Non-Lawyers.......2004-06-27

I'm not a lawyer and I find this book extremely useful and easy to use.

It offers step by step instructions on locating specific information at each site included in the book - and there's alot of sites. It's got everything from public records and business research resources to medical and scientific sites.

The index makes it easy to find info in the book and the CD makes it easy to link directly to the sites.

I highly recommend this book to anyone whether they're a lawyer or not!

      5 out of 5 stars Finally A Comprehensive Guide.......2004-06-22

As a lawyer, I spend a great deal of time searching for information. This book is a fantastic resource and I highly recommend it to others. Levitt takes a very complicated area and makes it simple. This book is worth the investment.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book-Very Interesting...........2001-04-04

Being a lawyer in NYC, I was very impressed with some Inside the Minds: Interne Lawyers. Although it is impossible to cover every Internet related topic, the book does a good job at covering some very interesting topics. In addition, the individuals portrayed in the book represent a good cross sampling of different talents related to Internet law. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark Fischer at Palmer & Dodge. If you are a woman, make sure to also check out Inside the Minds: Leading Women.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Lawyers To Fish The Internet Ocean.......1999-04-04

Books on Internet research for lawyers have become a crowded genre. This one stands out in three ways:

      a. It concentrates on TECHNIQUES, rather than just providing a giant, soon-to-be outdated list of URLS.

      b. It covers factual research, which is probably a better use of the Internet for lawyers than legal research.

      c. It is much better written than most books for lawyers, with lively prose focusing on real people, real problems, real Internet research.

CONCLUSION: This book is a bargain for lawyers seeking to learn to use the Internet for research.

      Book Description

From simple email to sophisticated online marketing, Net Law: How Lawyers Use the Internet shows how the solo practitioner or the large law firm can turn the Net into an effective and efficient tool. Through stories from those who've set up pioneering legal Net sites, attorney Paul Jacobsen explains how lawyers can successfully integrate the Internet into their practices, sharing lessons these "early adopters" have learned.

In this book, you'll read about a law firm that reports its Web site gets more than 40,000 visitors a week, resulting in 6,000 subscribers to its online newsletter. The firm claims that more than two-thirds of its clients come to them directly through their Internet Web site.Net Law shows what you might do to get similar results.

Firms with Internet connections not only have the yet-to-be-proven advantages of a homepage to tout their firm's virtues and services, but the practical advantages offered by email and access to legal research resources on the Net.

In Net Law, the author walks the reader through the process of getting connected, to using the Net for research, to marketing online. Net Law draws heavily from the real-life experiences of lawyers who were early adopters of the Net and have successfully integrated it into their practices. These early adopters share their experiences and the lessons they've learned. They talk about what works online -- and what doesn't, separating the reality of the Net from the hype and hysteria that often surrounds this new medium.

The wealth of the Internet can only be fully tapped by those professionals who actually use it. Net Law's author takes the reader step by step through the issues, beginning with examples of firms that have already experienced the power of being connected. He walks beginners through two chapters of Internet basic training before moving on to the business of turning a Net connection into a working asset for the firm.

One of the biggest advantages lawyers get with a Net connection is the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients over great distances. Lawyers interviewed in the book tell of exchanging 200-page legal briefs with other attorneys in other cities, allowing them to meet tight filing deadlines they would have otherwise missed. The book also deals with the issue of privacy and security. Email is not as secure as traditional mail for highly confidential client communication. How do lawyers protect themselves and their clients' information in this new medium? Net Law explains how lawyers are addressing this serious issue.

Research was noted by many of the lawyers interviewed as one of the Net's key resources. With many university law libraries now online and recent case law and court decisions becoming available online, attorneys are finding research time and budgets shrinking thanks to a simple and cheap Internet connection.

Unlike other professions that can simply advertise their services to the public, ethical considerations limit what attorneys feel is appropriate in marketing legal services. The author spends considerable time exploring the do's and don'ts of online legal marketing and shares the experiences of those who have been both successful and unsuccessful. The author offers examples of law firms that range from modest to aggressive use of the Net. Includes CD-ROM with Internet software and limited free online time.

You can't beat having a strong presence online, if you are a self-employed contracts kind of lawyer. This book helped me drum up decent business. Glad I got it. I only wish it came with more online examples.

4 out of 5 stars interesting, for lawyers even much.......1998-08-07

Apart from introductory information it contains many interesting views, also from lawyers' own practice. These personal, short, "interviews" with real life persons make this book that interesting.

      Worth the bucks to pay.

Amazon.com does not clearly distinguish between the uselessly obsolete first edition (published in 1991) and the revised edition (published in 1998). These are practically different books. I got burned because when I clicked on a link that said something like "3 used & new from $21.60", I ended up with two copies of the edition with ENIAC on the cover!
