3 out of 5 stars Great to learn with, bad resources.......2006-01-29

This book is very good on teaching the basics of C#, and makes you think a bit. The tutorial driven approach enables you actually get experience in every chapter ( at the end of every chapter are good exercises). The problem is that you do not have the answers to the excercises available unless you have the Teacher edition ( this is a classroom book ) , and Deitel will not help you out in this area ( say if you are stuck on an excercise ).There are also 'Programming Challenges' at the end of every chapter that have you use command and concepts that you have yet to learn ( not in all but some ). Other than that, this tutorial is very good, just bad customer service from the authors.

4 out of 5 stars A step forward.......2005-06-03

I would say that this book would be the step after Deitel's C# How to Program. The concepts in this book are more mathmatic then what is in How to Program.

In essance I found explanations of most of the concepts vague.

If you are just beginning to program, then i would say do the How to Program first and Simply C# after. You should be able to write some decent programs and head into an ADO or ASP .net book from there.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent approach!.......2004-06-15

If you are like me and need to have 'hands-on' practice to learn new things, then this is the book for you. Lots of code with concise and detailed explanation of all the concepts being presented. A step by step tutorial with each exercise building on the previous one. You become 'immersed' in the code with the end result that you actually learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Very good for a beginner.......2004-05-05

If you are new to C# and has no experience with other C based languages (C, C++, Java), then this book should be the first book you should read. All the rudimentry concepts are explained in detail. The practice problems are marvelous. The author, unlike most programming authors, clearly understands the paramount importance of writing practice programs to learn a new computer language.

If you want to have a heavy duty understanding of ADO, ASP, and OOP, then this book will come up short. But there are other books in the market that will fill that niche.

5 out of 5 stars Simply C# Bravo!.......2004-03-23

For the authors of Simply C#. A note from a guy who programs for the challenge and fun of it. I am in chapter 32 of Simply C#. Bravo for a wonderful learning experience! I have seen (and bought) lots of Programming Books (Basic, C, C++) over the years, yours in number ONE on my list..Wow..it is a joy to work with..Thanks..Thomas J. McGrail. Longs, SC

1 out of 5 stars Typos, and poorly written, NOT good........2005-08-18

First off, this book should be compared with other application driven approaches. From that stand point, this book is poorly organized, filled with typos, and really doesn't add clarity to the subject, (ie C++). Typos in an application driven approach really cause problems because you are depending on the code that they have written to be instructive in and of itself. In other words, you read the code, and their explaination of the code, and your knowledge comes from clear usable examples. It just seems that they are not that organized, or they may have had to cut some of the information out of the book in order to send it to print in time. I don't know. Of the 22 chapters, I have completed all the work through chapter 17, and now it is so muddy, since the topics are a little more difficult, I have decided to find some better sources to learn from. The first 10 chapters are not so bad, since they are language basics, loops, variables, if else,... But, they started to get confused at pointers and classes. These are extremely important topics in C++, and I have found other books that are far more helpful. Some of the decisions that they made as to how they taught the material was and is perplexing.

If you are looking for a reference book, don't even think about this book. So, it is neither good for applications, or reference.

3 out of 5 stars Easy read stressing Senator's constitutionalism.......1998-10-09

I read this book shortly after meeting with Sam Irvin as a newspaper consultant in 1966. He was a delight and so was this book. Senator Sam was perhaps the last great constitutionalist of the 1900s. He sacrificed alot of his own beliefs to better provide racial equality, especially at the educational level. He was a true gentleman and late in his illustrious career became obsessed with Richard Nixon's clandestine activities. You will not be able to put this book down or again see the Constitution the way you used to.

I love all Sophie Kinsella's books!!
This was a great one, I read it in 3 days, I couldn't stop. It was a lot ot fun and has a great message..a complete rollercoaster ride..Great new character, you HAVE to read it!! You will love it too!

4 out of 5 stars similar to others, but still a fun read.......2007-09-08

Sophie Kinsella's novel, The Undomestic Goddess, is a formulaic but fun-filled twist on Kinsella's previous stories. Firmly in the chick lit genre but possessing more wit and laugh-out-loud humor than most others in that category, The Undomestic Goddess can most closely be compared to Kinsella's other books, including her first and most well-known novel, Confessions of a Shopaholic.

The story revolves around Samantha Sweeting, a highly driven attorney living the legal dream at one of Britain's most prestigious law firms. In line to become the firm's youngest-ever partner, Samantha is rudely booted from the company when a small filing error costs a client millions of pounds. In a panic-stricken daze, Samantha flees London to get away from the repercussions of her mistake and knocks on the door of a spacious mansion when she gets off the train several cities later.

The couple who lives there believes Samantha is an applicant for a full-time housekeeping position and employ her on the spot before she can protest. Unfortunately, Samantha knows nothing about cooking or cleaning after years of slaving to climb the ladder of corporate success. How Samantha finds happiness, love, and the domestic skills to pull off such an undertaking is a hilarious mess of misunderstandings.

A former financial journalist, Kinsella is famous for her Shopaholic series and known for her endearing portrayals of clever yet slightly neurotic women. She also wrote the novel Can You Keep a Secret?, currently her only other non-Shopaholic work.

As always, Kinsella's skill with the written word is unparalleled in her genre. Although, like her other novels, The Undomestic Goddess follows the mishaps of a quirky young woman who digs herself deeper into her lies and cover stories before pulling through in the end, it is no less of a gem to read. Kinsella's ability to convey common thoughts that every woman has in a way that makes the reader laugh out loud never gets old.

While some of Samantha's ploys over the course of the novel are rather ludicrous and nearly cross the line of believability, the funny and touching writing makes up for them. Samantha is lovable as a heroine, and the supporting characters are often humorously endearing. The love plot is subdued but sweet, and Kinsella does an excellent job of weaving humor and romance together for a believable relationship.

Kinsella delivers another winner with The Undomestic Goddess, a predictable but never boring piece of chick lit. Sweet as cotton candy but with enough bite to hook the reader until the very end, The Undomestic Goddess is perfect for anyone who wants to put away the heavy reading and have a purely fun fiction experience.

    Book Description

The moving, inspiring memoir of one of the great women of our times, Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate for the oppressed, whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution and despite the challenges she has faced raising a family while pursuing her work.

Best known in this country as the lawyer working tirelessly on behalf of Canadian photojournalist, Zara Kazemi – raped, tortured and murdered in Iran – Dr. Ebadi offers us a vivid picture of the struggles of one woman against the system. The book movingly chronicles her childhood in a loving, untraditional family, her upbringing before the Revolution in 1979 that toppled the Shah, her marriage and her religious faith, as well as her life as a mother and lawyer battling an oppressive regime in the courts while bringing up her girls at home.

Outspoken, controversial, Shirin Ebadi is one of the most fascinating women today. She rose quickly to become the first female judge in the country; but when the religious authorities declared women unfit to serve as judges she was demoted to clerk in the courtroom she had once presided over. She eventually fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in politically charged cases that most lawyers were afraid to represent. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of the victims of injustice and discrimination and become a powerful voice for change, almost universally embraced as a hero.

Her memoir is a gripping story – a must-read for anyone interested in Zara Kazemi’s case, in the life of a remarkable woman, or in understanding the political and religious upheaval in our world.

5 out of 5 stars Best book you might ever read.......2007-09-23

This is the best and the most honest version of the modern history of my country from the eyes of a brave educated woman who is not afraid to fight for what every one else is afraid to whisper. In her memoir, she does not leave out any detail of the atmosphere governing Iran. Living in the circumstances she describes in the book, I genuinely respect her for who she is. She is an icon every woman can look up to and That is why she is a Nobel prize winner. She has a story telling gift, making the book absolutely attractive and easy to follow. This book is a must read; she risked her life writing it and it needs audience: Iranian women and children need Shirin Ebadi and people who think like her. This is an outstanding book, unforgettable.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Story.......2007-09-19

This is probably the best book that I have read this year. Shirin Ebadi tells of her brave defense of human rights in post-revoluationary Iran. Although she is a widely respected, famous Noble Peace Prize winner, she shows humility throughout. I also enjoyed reading her opinions on Iranian leaders, past and present. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars a great read.......2007-08-30

Ms. Ebadi crafts a compelling autobiography that draws the reader in like a novel. She brings us into the center of her experiences without crowing or being sanctimonious. In telling her own story, she also manages, in a fairly short book to present what I think is an objective history of Iran starting just prior to the 1953 coup and ending at the present.

        Book Description

The Making of a Country Lawyer is the firsthand account of a beloved American attorney, a modern-day folk hero, a man who has devoted his life's work to the downtrodden and damned. It is the story of a wayward son who, at the age of twenty, suffered an immense and tragic loss. It is this single dark moment in Spence's life that transformed him, preparing him to be a trial lawyer, eventually handling such landmark cases as the defence of Randy Weaver and the vindication of Karen Silkwood. This is the stirring memoir of a man who has captured the American imagination at a time when our belief in our values and in ourselves has been shaken to the core, told as only Gerry Spence can.

4 out of 5 stars Honest story of an interesting life.......2007-02-18

It has been said that it takes a great deal of courage for a person to take both their private thoughts and sacred moments and put them down on paper for another person to read. This is what Gerry Spence has done with his autobiography, and he should be congratulated for doing so. Spence is renowned for his landmark victories in court, including the Karen Silkwood estate, The defense of Randy Weaver, and the acquittal of Imelda Marcos. This story is not about that chapter in Spence's life, it is about the life of the young man who became this lawyer. Spence spends a fair amount of time talking about personal intimate details of his youth that most people would prefer to forget about, let alone share with perfect strangers. For me, this is where Spence's courage deserves to be applauded. Spence now presents himself as a kind understanding gentleman who is capable of dealing respectfully will those from all walks of life -- one of the many reasons he is so successful at handling jury trails. To read his own story, this was not always the case. I have read other reviews of this book from people who were shocked to learn the details of this man's teenage, young adult, and middle adult years and seemed to hold it against him. To me, Spence is not ashamed, as he should not be, about the path his life has taken. He offers no apology, and does not owe us one. He simply describes in detail the story of the first half (approximately) of his life with insight as to how it created the Gerry Spence that we all now know and love.

Some parts of the book to tend to get a little long and drawn out. This is simply Spence being Spence. He is never in a hurry to tell his stories and likes to let them meander. They are his stories and this one is about his life, so he should tell it his way.

My final thoughts of this book are not so much about he book itself, but something that happen right after I finished it. I had read several of Spence's works in succession. This book was the last. Not long afterward I sat down one Saturday afternoon and send him an e-mail telling him what I had read and that I appreciated his writing and his work. I sent the mail not really expecting anything and took off for the gym. I came home a few hours later and found a reply in my Inbox from Gerry thanking me and telling me that I had made his day. It was nice to know that I was able to talk briefly with a renowned figure.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the Abyss.......2005-12-13

In the Making of a Country Lawyer, Spence delivers what most of those who write autobiographies avoid -- a critical, honest and, at times, humorous account of his growth from an awkward youth, to married man, and ultimately to a truly mature man. He is so honest and witty and provides such rich descriptions of his teenage years, his law school "education," and his first few trials that I would be cringing one moment and laughing out loud the next. So emotionally lost was Spence at different times that it appeared he could never find his way out of the abyss, nevermind reclaim the mountain top. It is more than an autobiography, it is the story of man so tormented with guilt and feelings of inadequacy that he's desperate to escape his own skin . . . until he meets his soulmate. It's the best autobiography I've ever read and perhaps Spence's best book.

        2 out of 5 stars Excruciating.......2004-10-29

This book relates the details of the life of Gerry Spence, a well-known trial lawyer. From his earliest days of life through the beginnings of his second marriage, Spence reveals to us what his life was like, who his influences were, and how he reacted. The driving focus of the book is Spence's mother, who took her own life when he was a young man. At the time of her death, she and Spence had had a falling out, and Spence sees much of the rest of his life as trying to make peace with her. At the end of this book, some of Spence's famous cases and clients are mentioned in an epilogue; however, these topics are not discussed in the memoir section at all.

As an outsider to Spence's family, this book was extremely hard to get through. Some of the details of his early life in rural Wyoming were quite interesting, and he certainly reveals some of his character as he variously compares arguing in the courtroom to wild game hunting or playing poker. The stories of his first marriage and its breakup, and how he took up with another woman are not exactly things to be proud of, and I'm not sure his family would really want to see these details published. When his marriage was on the rocks, he decided to sell his family's home in Wyoming together with all their possessions and start life anew in Mill Valley, California. Within a month, though, he abandoned his family in Mill Valley, where they were far from relatives, friends or any other people who might provide emotional support, to go back to his mistress in Wyoming. I couldn't help thinking about Judith Wallerstein's book about children of divorce ("Second Chances") when I read this section. For her studies, she chose families facing divorce in the early 1970s living in a town in California. Was it Mill Valley where she did her studies? Did she include the four Spence children in her work? Was it the Spence children whose standard of living took a drastic nosedive when their father moved in with someone else? But it was the woe begotten prose addressed to Spence's mother that was the most difficult part of this book to get through. I had hoped to develop some sympathy for lawyers, or at least for this one, or maybe even learn something about growing up in the West during the Depression by reading this book. Instead, after reading this book, I find myself repelled even by the thought of reading any more memoirs by lawyers.

        5 out of 5 stars This century'sTom Paine.......2004-06-17

Next to "The Paper Chase",I found Gerry Spence's autobiography to be extremely inspirational, and yet, this time he offered wisdom for the rest of us who do not take up the law. One reviewer missed the point about "country lawyer"(the common man), trying to weaken Spence's building diatribe against corporate America. His vivid, meticulous storytelling ranges as wide as the landscape of his upbringing, where Horatio Alger meets Franklin and finishes with Thomas Paine. In other words, he offers hope for the little guy, the citizen, if men of his cloth would abandon their ways and the rest of us would stop acting like lemmings. This captivating, truth-telling journey to adulthood, runs from the depression to the consumptive new millenium. His many Lincolnian lessons throughout make it a deservedly classic manual for the under-taught. Spence proves Darwin wrong. It's not the fittest, the prepared truth-seekers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Trial Lawyers of All Time.......2002-08-21

I liked the book very much because I am intrigued by courtrooms and defense lawyers. But I also found the man in a seminar to be engaging, quick, wise, honest. He may act like a country lawyer, but Spence is one of America's finest attorneys. His story reminds me of Horatio Alger and "From Rages to Riches." A product of the West, he walks easily in the most erudite arenas and writes as exquisitely as he speaks. So much wisdom, information, understanding, sensitivity to the lesser ones of us. Kudos, Gerry.
