Great for my users.......2004-09-09
I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.
This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.
Marty and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that it has helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Really A Quick Start..........2006-11-29
I really enjoyed reading this book, because it is similar in many ways to the book that we used. PowerPoint for Windows is a book that gives you systematic information. This book has the most recent version of PowerPoint and its current features.
Chapter 1: It introduces what PowerPoint exactly is and how it works. With PowerPoint, you can get creative with the slides, variety of formats, such as bulleted lists, numeric tables, and business and organization charts. For example, you can create your slides in any design you want by easily adding graphics to it. In addition, this chapter explains how to use:
* The PowerPoint Interface
* PowerPoint Menus
* Toolbars
* Shortcut Menus
* Task Panes
* Getting Help
* Using Undo
Chapter 2: Gives you a tour of PowerPoint. It shows you from how to begin the program, choosing a template, choosing a layout, creating a chart, saving, opening, and closing the presentations to viewing the slide show. In addition, this chapter explains how to use:
* Creating a Bulleted List
* Creating a Chart
* Choosing a Chart Type
* Formatting a Chart
* Navigating a Presentation
* Using normal View
* Using the Outline Pane
* Using Slide Sorter View
* Using Transitions and Animations
Chapter 3: You learn how to create slides that contain text and how to edit and format the text. Slide shows that consist of text primarily are bulleted lists or two-column text. In addition, this chapter explains how to use:
* Choosing a Text Layout
* Entering Text into a Placeholder
* Creating a Text Box
* Manipulating Text Placeholders
* Moving Text
* Using the Spell Checker
* Correcting Mistakes Automatically
* Working with Smart Tags
Chapter 4 thru 20: In chapter 4 thru 20 it teaches you more in depth how to use PowerPoint for the following:
* Inserting Charts
* Formatting Charts
* Creating Pie Charts
* Using Organization Charts and Diagrams
* Creating Tables
* Adding Graphical Objects
* Importing Graphics
* Manipulating Graphical Objects
* Making Global Changes
* Working in Outline View
* Working in Slide Sorter View
* Producing a Slide Show
* Applying Animation
* Using Sound and Video
* Taking Your Show on the Road
* From Screen to Toner: Printing Your Presentation
* Present on the Internet
After reading this book, I benefited a lot from it, understanding the extent of the mechanics in PowerPoint, such as: applying animation, using sound and video, taking your slide show on the road, printing your presentation and presenting it on the Internet.
PowerPoint.......2004-03-29
This book is an excellent reference boook and guide book, but it is not a novel. No one will sit down and read it.
It is indexed well, so one can find out how to make a specific slide quickly. Although Microsoft offers help and instruction on line, I found this book the answer to using PowerPoint well.
With the elimination of good manuals from Microsoft -- I think DOS 6.0 was the last -- books of this type have become a requirement.

Critical Race Feminism: A Reader (Critical America Series)

Book Description
In the past few years, a new generation of progressive intellectuals has dramatically transformed how law, race, and racial power are understood and discussed in America. Questioning the old assumptions of both liberals and conservatives with respect to the goals and the means of traditional civil rights reform, critical race theorists have presented new paradigms for understanding racial injustice and new ways of seeing the links between race, gender, sexual orientation, and class. This reader, edited by the principal founders and leading theoreticians of the critical race theory movement, gathers together for the first time the movement's most important essays.

words and bullets.......2004-12-04
when your boss, all the media you read or watch, most of your teachers, and some of your own family members tell you using words, or hint through their actions, that you are no good because you are [fill in the blank]. After a million iterations, you'd lose any confidence you might have and you'd live your life allowing [fill in the blank] persons to step all over you. While an insult is less harmful than a bullet, a few hundred insults has roughly the same effect as holding a gun to someone's head because you're basically saying, "obey or die of lonliness and starvation." Now, to fill in the blank, the mobs making these silent threats for the last 300 years has been predominantly (not always) white, male, and wealthy. The people receiving this has been women, people of color, and the poor, not to mention short and fat people.
Are words really equivalent to physical assault?.......2002-02-19
One of the key points of this book is that words can be as harmful as physical assault, which is why the authors believe that the law should suppress both.
But if the two are equivalent, if hateful words are equivalent to bullets, then logically one can respond to words with bullets. Is that the view the authors really believe in and wish to promote? I sure hope not. But then the entire premise of the book is undermined.
Change the way you view law and politics.......2001-06-18
This collection of insightful essays will change the way that you view law and politics in America. The authors deconstruct the racial, gender, and class dynamics that shape our instutions, particularly our courts. It not surprising that the featured authors launched such a tremendous movement as Critical Race Theory.
Great Book to Open Eyes of Those who Care but Are Not Aware.......2001-05-20
This book is incredible. As a highschool student, I never really realized all of the barriers set up against people of color in the law. I coudldn't figure out why my black friends still didn't have the respect if laws are "neutral." Dorothy Roberts article in this book about the prosecution of drug-addicted pregnant women addresses many touchy issues and brings the problems with the law directly to light. And the introduction to this book clarifies CRT in a very helpful way. An excellent read.
EXCELLENT INTRO BOOK TO CRT- MUST HAVE.......2001-01-07
I have had this reader for some time now- and have since had a chance to fully appreciate all that it offers. The title couldn't be more accurate- these are the key writings that shaped the Critical Race Theory (CRT) movement. This is a must have for any law student who is looking to explore the scholarship of persons of color who have largely been ignored or excluded in the legal discussions involving civil rights. It is also a great starter book for anyone interested in exploring CRT.
Book Description
The development of the modern Yale Law School is deeply intertwined with the story of a group of students in the 1960s who worked to unlock democratic visions of law and social change that they associated with Yale's past and with the social climate in which they lived. During a charged moment in the history of the United States, activists challenged senior professors, and the resulting clash pitted young against old in a very human story. By demanding changes in admissions, curriculum, grading, and law practice, Laura Kalman argues, these students transformed Yale Law School and the future of American legal education.
Inspired by Yale's legal realists of the 1930s, Yale law students between 1967 and 1970 spawned a movement that celebrated participatory democracy, black power, feminism, and the counterculture. After these students left, the repercussions hobbled the school for years. Senior law professors decided against retaining six junior scholars who had witnessed their conflict with the students in the early 1970s, shifted the school's academic focus from sociology to economics, and steered clear of critical legal studies. Ironically, explains Kalman, students of the 1960s helped to create a culture of timidity until an imaginative dean in the 1980s tapped into and domesticated the spirit of the sixties, helping to make Yale's current celebrity possible.

Turbulence in the Legal Academy.......2005-12-06
Each of Laura Kalman's preceding books to some extent has dealt with Yale Law School: the incisive "Legal Realism at Yale"; her definitive biography of Abe Fortas; and the awesome "Strange Career of Legal Liberalism." This new and very long volume focuses upon the turbulence that descended upon Yale in the late 1960's and early 1970's. For readers whose interest in the topic does not extend to reading a 474 page, highly detailed analysis, Kalman has written an essay with the book's major themes in the volume of essays edited by Dean Kronman, "History of the Yale Law School" (also reviewed by myself on Amazon).
The typical (and welcome) Kalman thoroughness is well in evidence here. As is usual, much of the value of her analysis is found in the footnotes, here covering some 80 pages. As the "Legal Liberalism" volume demonstrated, there is nobody who can trace the evolution of professorial legal analysis with greater skill and cogency than Kalman. Kalman sets the stage by first discussing legal education in the 1960's at YLS, and develops quite a nice and concise history going back to the New Deal period as background. Particular attention is paid to individuals such as Dean Rostow, Kingman Brewster, and Charles Reich. Particularly welcome, and quite an additional bonus, is the fact that the author devotes substantial attention to Alexander Bickel, a figure too often forgotten today due to his premature death at 49.
Having set the background, Kalman then goes into a very detailed reconstruction of how highly activist students clashed with the YLS institutional structure. When one considers that this was the era of the Vietnam war, affirmative action, Kent State, Hippies, Black Panthers, and the Women's movement, it is no wonder that disruption became extreme, including at least one fire. YLS obviously survived and prospered in the post-disruption period, and Kalman addresses that as well. These later chapters I found to be the more interesting. For example, her discussion of the failure of critical legal studies, "law and society", and "law and economics" to take root in the legal realism foundation of YLS is extremenly interesting. By contrast, YLS becomes the home to a new version of the "legal process" approach to limiting judicial discretion as disappointment grew in the 1970's and 1980's with the exercise of judicial power, including even the record of the Warren Court. More prominent actors appear in this later section, to the reader's benefit: Dworking, Ely, Calabresi, Ackerman, Cover and Fiss. Interdisciplinary approaches to law flower and clinical education becomes well established and supported. In the end, the protestors brought about substantial change at YLS.
The one area that Kalman does not discuss fully enough is why should anyone with no ties to YLS take the time to digest this mighty tome. It does recapture the spirit of the period and the protests that dominated higher education in America. It does illuminated how substantial changes in the legal academy came about as a result of this period. It does afford some insight into the backgrounds of some prominent recent actors such as Justice Thomas, Anita Hill, Judge Alito, and most of all, both Clintons who were YLS students. Most importantly, it explains the impact that YLS professors had on legal scholarship in this country with a stream of articles and books arguing for new and incisive ways to confront the phenomenon of American law and the exercise of judicial power. By any measure, a timely volume to be sure.

Book Description
Critical Legal Theory and the Challenge of Feminism provides both a thorough overview and a refinement of the ideas that underlie critical legal theory. Arguing with the rigor of analytic philosophy and the alertness to paradoxes characteristic of deconstructive philosophy, Matthew Kramer begins by exploring the tangled relations between metaphysics and politics. He then attempts to transform the discourses of the critical legal studies movement by laying out a framework of five general themes: contradictions, contingency, patterning, perspective, and ideology. Kramer calls for a more sophisticated awareness of their paradoxes, explaining why the paradoxes are by no means disabling or demobilizing. Finally, Kramer explores some of feminist theory's major controversies and problems, and argues that feminist theory can profit greatly by giving due attention to inescapable paradoxes. The book is an important contribution to political philosophy, jurisprudence, feminist philosophy and metaphysics, with powerful implications for epistemology and literary theory.
Book Description
This study attempts to understand the complex transition from so-called "Old Right" to "New Right" or "New Labour," and locates some of the roots of the latter in the complexity, tensions, and fragmentation of the former during the "lean" years of social democracy in the 1970s. The analysis addresses both the short- and long-term implications of the emerging ideological, organizational, and political complexity and divisions of the parliamentary Labour right and Labour revisionism, previously concealed within the loosely adhesive post-war framework of Keynesian reformist social democracy. It establishes the extent to which "New" Labour is a legatee of at least some elements of the disparate and discordant Labour right and tensions of social democratic revisionism in the 1970s.
