Book Description

It's 2023, and Guy Fontaine is an unwilling new resident at Mission Pescadero, an assisted-living facility outside San Francisco. It doesn't take him long to realize that his fellow residents have reverted to the lifestyles they embraced in the sixties, complete with sex, drugs, and rock and roll (with a little Viagra thrown in for good measure). The Mission Pescadero staff, and the world outside, would like nothing more than to forget these aging hippies, but the residents want-no, demand-to be treated with respect and dignity. And they'll fight for it. When one resident's prohibited cat is discovered by Mission Pescadero's domineering administrator, the resulting confrontation mushrooms into an epic battle between authority and anarchy, complete with twenty-four-hour media coverage and the involvement of California's governor, Drew Barrymore. As tensions escalate, Guy finds himself cast as an unlikely radical in a drama he doesn't understand.

By turns outrageous, hilarious, and, ultimately, touching, Tim Sandlin's new novel is a fascinating exploration of how the baby boomers are facing their own mortality. Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty is Sandlin at his iconoclastic best.

5 out of 5 stars Grumpy Old Stoners.......2007-08-14

As much as I would love to take credit for that descriptive title, I cannot. That is merely another gem from Tim Sandlin.

If you enjoy reading a well written, entertaining, laugh out loud funny book with a whole lot of heart then you are in luck because "Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty" will deliver on all counts.

5 out of 5 stars So Much For the Golden Years.......2007-08-03

I must admit to being a big fan of Tim Sandlin, ever since "Sex and Sunsets" he has had my attention. This book is way to close to my age group and Tim is too young to know all the 60's music references. Scary as the prospect of my future in an "assisted living" facility may be, send me to this spot, I want to sit between the two Sunshines, I think I met one of them at the Fillmore at a Paul Butterfield Concert many years ago. Congrats to Tim, this hilarious book has a brutal honest side that is longer than Jerry Garcia's beard.

5 out of 5 stars Crunchy on the outside, soft at the core.......2007-05-19

In this old-age romp, Sandlin turns his sharp satirical talents loose while doing that other thing that hilarious satirists can't always do -- empathy. Sandlin is able to both poke fun at sentimentality and yet he has a soft touch too; when these old peeps aren't expsoing their rear ends in mass-moonings, they expose their sadnesses, bewilderments, regrets, and disappointments at the lives behind and in front of them. The best part of JHT80 is the highly refreshing take on stereotypes of old age: the wisdom, feeblemindedness and bloody boringness with which old people are often relegated don't feature here. These old folks stick it to that portrayal and fling an adult diaper at anyone who ever says growing old means acting like it.

4 out of 5 stars Taking a walk on the "wild"& unique side..........2007-04-02

All "baby boomers" should read this book. The references to the sixties and people and places of the time are nostalgic. The honesty about situations that the elderly of our generation are realistically written about. Alot of food for thought, I enjoy the authors writing style.

5 out of 5 stars Comic romp and frightening parable wrapped into one.......2007-03-08

It's 2022, Jenna Bush is President, Gulf War VI is going on, and Gen Xers are warehousing their aging boomer parents in "assisted living" communities and taking control of their money under false pretenses.

Guy Fontaine, a retired sportswriter from Oklahoma, has moved in with his daughter, Claudia, in California after the death of beloved wife Lily. But when he has a senior moment--he hallucinates and drives a golf cart onto the freeway--he is locked up in Mission Pescadero, an assisted living community that encapsulates the frightening world Sandlin posits for our future. An evil administrator runs the place with all the humanity of the worst lunch lady in the boomers' past, peopling it with patients brought in on the flimsiest diagnoses of dementia, with residents going "through the tunnel" to the nursing wing on even flimsier diagnoses by her corrupt doctor/near lover, where they are drugged comatose and quiet.

The Mission's population is mainly leaders of the leftist movements of the Sixties, who have created a hierarchy based on when and what they did in the decade that you're only supposed to have been there if you've forgotten it. Guy, straight, drug-free and monogamous all his life, finds himself struggling to adjust with the proponents of free love and drug use in the golden years. But when the administrator discovers one patient has--shudder--a cat in his room, Guy is driven to violence to defend someone who had befriended him, setting off a revolt to liberate the Mission.

Sandlin carries this absurd yet realistic situation with aplomb, showing real understanding of the concerns and difficulties faced by old people, as well as the trends of society that, if left unchecked, could lead to a world like the one he imagines here. Even minor characters are given some depth and the good lines are dispersed amongst them. Guy's unconventional romance with Rocky is counterpointed by other love stories, from a lesbian encounter between one of the youngest residents and a yoga instructor to an alley cat of a man who doesn't realize he has terrible breath. Even the villains are given some back story and some sympathy. And all to the tunes of Jefferson Airplane and The Who.

My favorite character is a woman who comes out of a drug-induced coma to lead the revolution, barking orders in a remarkably cogent and prepared manner, which foreshadows revelations about her character that end up shocking the residents and prolonging their isolation. Full confession: I once met a woman who might have been a model for this character while doing work in a prison. Sandlin has the type down perfectly.

He also has the good sense to provide a bittersweet ending, reminding us that mortality and fragility occur even among the worthy.

Whether the book will become non-fiction, as Sandlin predicts, is really up to all of us.

In my opinion, the best collection of Jimi's songs. This tablature is top notch, and should take you a while to get through even one song. :)

5 out of 5 stars Blues You Can Use!.......2004-11-08

This is Jimi's quintessential blues album, with covers of great standards and true-to-form originals. His rendition of 'Born Under a Bad Sign' is quite satisfying, with its string scratching, chordal rolls, and tasty wah-wah treatment.

Then there's the climactic highlight of 'Here My Train A Comin' (electric)' from his 5/70 Berkley concert - a performance thought by many, to be Jimi's most comprehensive expoundment upon the genre; and I would concur.

'Red House' is a great jam and not too difficult to get under the fingers. The key to learning other player's stuff, is to listen very closely to identify the elements and structure, then seek to apply them to your own voice.

This book would be a good place for even a beginner to learn the blues. Because after all, the blues isn't complicated. And Jimi's masterful expression of it didn't come from a place of technical prowess, but rather from a place of deep-rooted and heart-felt meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Shortest way to master blues guitar.......2003-11-04

Jimi Hendrix's guitar style is established based on a dozen of preceding blues masters such as Muddy Waters. "Blues" shows Jimi's rendition of the blues standards performed by the masters. Learning this transcription carefully is the shortest way to master the techniques and licks used by the blues masters. "Radio One" and "Woodstock" transcriptions are also essential for blues guitar students.

    5 out of 5 stars Hendrix = Legend.......2007-05-10

Jimi hendrix's style I have to say is one of the most flexible and purest there is. He has different version's of his songs and "isle of wight" will show you what I'm talking about. If you compare "Red House" from woodstock to wight..the woodstock's version sounds more bright/happy than the wight. I think it also comes from his mood.

        Book Description

On the 35th anniversary of his death comes the definitive biography of rock 'n' roll legend Jimi Hendrix-by the New York Times bestselling author Charles R. Cross oinciding with the 35th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's tragic death in 1970, Room Full of Mirrors is the definitive biography of rock 'n' roll's greatest guitarist. Meticulously researched and based on more than 300 interviews with those who knew him best-more than half of whom have never spoken about him before-this landmark book recounts the entire arc of Hendrix's life, from his troubled childhood in Seattle's projects and the early loss of his mother to his struggles against racial prejudice as a young musician and his rapid ascent to the top amidst the swinging London scene, and finally to the apex of his career headlining Woodstock in 1969, with his death occurring a year later.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great on life. Music not so much. .......2007-08-16

I think for what this book set about to be it's easily "4" or "5." The author wanted to write about Hendrix's life -- almost half the book is before he becomes a rock star. I really enjoyed the scenes set in his early days -- stuff we don't know so much about, like touring the South with Little Richard. However, it seems to me if you write a biography about someone as God-like as Hendrix there should be moments of higher level of stylistic interpretation regarding what exactly his music is.

What Hendrix did was profound. He turned thew combination of Blues and psychedellic rock into something that simply did not exist until then. (Ok, there was Clapton, but. . . no time for qualifiers.) His sound was not just something people listened to. The Hendrix sound is the soul of a world in transformation.

If you read, for instance, "LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS" about Elivs's early years, a lot of what the book is about is how this magical swirl of cultural forces in Memphis in the early 50s transformed America. ROOM FULL OF MIRRORS is basically just about the very interesting life of one man who was a big rock star and a great guitarist.

5 out of 5 stars The Premier Jimi Bio.......2007-08-12

If you take the time to read through all of the reader reviews on this book, you'll see a broad diversity of opinion. Charles Cross managed to ruffle more than a few feathers it seems. Without a doubt, Cross dug deeper into Jimi's early years and got closer to the people that were a part of Jimi's formative years than any other journalist.

The criticism that Cross failed to expose anything new about the fame years is valid but ultimately unimportant. The fame years were witnessed, glorified and documented by many and they are somewhat mythical in their presentation of the grandeur that collapsed into demise. But if one tries to understand what drove Jimi to be what he became, all other bios fall short. I remember wondering how this gifted kid could possibly know and breathe the blues as he did. The easy answer was that the lack of a stable childhood and his mother's early death were the source of Jimi's blues and no doubt they were part of the picture. But Cross spells it all out much more clearly and gives the story coherence and resonance. By elucidating the genesis of the genius, Cross manages to do what no other Jimi biographer has accomplished - and that is he brings the roots of Jimi's pain to life and in doing so shows the source of energy that provided his incredible drive. I thank Charles Cross for bringing closure to so many questions that had been swirling in my mind for well over thirty years.

3 out of 5 stars Worthy effort, but misses a lot.......2007-07-14

Cross makes two important contributions: 1) As others have noted, there's a lot of new information about Jimi's early life and the first 100 pages or so give a a very moving picture of his childhood. 2) The book makes clear how important Jimi's Seattle background was to his multicultural outlook, which is what made him willing and able to cross established boundaries more easily than if he had been born in raised in say the South or Northeast.

The rest of the book is fairly perfunctory stuff and Jimi's music is pretty much absent. Cross presents music as something Hendrix only thought about when he tired of cavorting with groupies and assorted low-lifes.

I'm also docking the book a star for not having an adequate bibliograpy.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-25

This book gives you such a close glimpse at Jimi's upbringing and inner visions and stuggles that you feel one with him. I couldn't put this book down and hope to come across more like this. Mr. Cross does a fantastic job uncovering the life of the greatest guitarist in history.

a hard hitting look at the legend of Jimi Hendrix..I haven't read a whole lot of biographies of Jimi so I couldn't really compare this to any other biography but I was mesmerized and totally engrossed in this story and the wonderful way it's written..from his hard childhood. to his army days and his breakout as a musical icon..highly recommended..

4 out of 5 stars Programming with Visual C.......2007-09-06

I have no experience with Visual Basic but I have taken a few classes in C. Overall the book is a good read, finished it in a week and the exercises are very productive. I would have like for there to be a 2nd part just on labs alone.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very satisfied.......2006-03-03

I bought this new book which I got it for $4 less than any other place including internet and book stores. I received the book on time and as I expected. Started reading and enjoying it...

4 out of 5 stars Use this book along with additional resources.......2005-11-26

The book is well structured to cover the exam topics. It does, however, omit certain details in some topics which would be unclear from just the book alone if I didn't already know them or didn't find some better explanations elsewhere online. You'll need some additional resource, including .NET class library online reference and online tutorials to fully understand certain topics.

                  4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent.......2005-10-17

I've not finished reading this book yet, nor have I completed all exercises. Already having a fair bit of experience with .NET and ASP.NET I can see that this book covers only the basics, though it seems to cover them quite well. I have, however, found a few code errors in the examples, which I feel detracts a fair bit from the overall quality of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A decent book if you FULLY utilize and understand it.......2005-07-26

I just passed the exam with a pretty nice score 1.5 hours ago, and relied solely on this book for preparing for the exam for 10 days. I have solid background in Web development and use of C#. That said, here is my very personal comment:

                  - The quality of this book is beyond my doubt. The book might have two errors that I think I saw when I read it the 2nd time, though I wasn't 100% sure. Other than that, I didn't find any errors/typos/mistakes in it. Many subtle issues are explained in the book in a way very easy to understand.

                  - looking back, I believe that if one wants to pass the exam with ease by using this book, one'd be much better off by doing and studying all the questions that come with the CD. I'm a bit regretful that I didn't finish up most of the electronic practice questions.

                  - I don't know any other book on the same subject. But looking back, I feel the book (including all the materials included with it) was perfect to help me pass the exam. I have no doubt that without the help of this book (or similar), I wouldn't have been able to pass the exam.

Overall: the paper book alone may or may not be enough for anyone to rely on for passing the cert exam, but if you have taken advantage of all the materials that come with the book and if you have *FULLY* understood what is covered in the book, you'll be almost quaranteed to pass the exam on your very first try. I may be wrong on this because different people have different backgrounds, but that's what I believe while looking back.

I'm an experienced vb6 programmer and looked for a book to help me make the switch. I found this book diving into issues without giving you any prerequisites. I had a hard time understanding where he wants to take me.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe good for exam, but you won't learn .NET or C# here.......2005-11-07

This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.

To make things worst, this book assumes you will be using Wizards and dispenses any explanation on why / how things work.

In addition to all the above, by 11/2005 standards the book itself is dated as C# does include now support for generics, which is not present in this book.

I still do give it a 3 just because I like some of the stuff, and it simplifies a couple of learning points.

BTW: A good POV on using Wizards is here -->

4 out of 5 stars Should be enough for passing the exam.......2005-09-03

I'd just like to say something. I finished reading this book from the very beginning a week ago to the very end this morning, and passed the exam with a score of 940 this afternoon. I don't know any other exam prep book for the same exam.

                  - Admittedly, the book is pretty shallow: it even teaches you what class/construstor/destructor/inheritance/etc are. To an old day VB'er unfamiliar with .NET/OOP stuff, or to any .NET beginner, this might be nice. But to most, especially to those specilized in C# (very likely also in C++), or to whoever is about to take an exam towards a certified developer, this is not necessary at all. I wish the book had covered some really advanced topics and/or gone deeper on existing topics.

                  - As for the exam, my personal opinion is that this book should be enough, as long as you also get some hands-on experience by actually messing around with .NET desktop apps for a while. Deskop apps are not my strong area and I rarely develop apps using .NET Windows Forms. But the book helped me with all the questions on the actual exam about desktop apps so I could pass the exam with ease. Without the book I doubt I could get the passing score of 700. A similar book might also help me that much, but I only needed one and this one was what I used.

                  - I'm not giving the book 5-star because this is going to be a useless book once read or once you passed the exam. I'm also not giving the book 3-star or lower because this is a well-written book after all, and with some hands-on experience, you should have little trouble passing the exam if you fully understand what the book tries to tell you.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely there are better books.......2005-07-28

I think that there are more interesting books about C# and MCP Certification.
The negative points of this books are:
                  - Are missing a lot of details of the .NET technology
                  - The sample codes are not complete, only show portions
                  - It is not enough to take an MCP test
                  Positive points are:
                  - It is a great book for introducing the .NET technology
                  - Contains a lot a sample questions oriented to take the MCP test

As a summary of the .NET technology, it is great!

                  Book Description

Take your pick: you may either read this book cover-to-cover, or just refer to it when you want ready-made solutions of "drop-in" code. Either way, Database Programming with Visual Basic .NET, Second Edition will teach you to master ADO.NET programmatically and from within the VS. NET IDE.

You will learn the concepts of disconnected data access with ADO.NET. You'll also learn to create tables, constraints, projects, stored procedures, views, and triggers. The book will explain how to use SQLXML 3.0 with SQL Server 2000, and how to incorporate message queuing into applications using MSMQ 3.0.

Author Carsten Thomsen, a recognized Microsoft MVP, carries over one of the most popular features from the first edition: the real-world sample application that he built throughout. With this example code, you can connect to SQL Server from your choices of SQL Server .NET Data Provider, OLE DB .NET Data Provider, or ODBC .NET Data Provider. Exchange Server 2000 data manipulation is also covered, with original working code.

                  Download Description

You can read Database Programming with Visual Basic .NET, Second Edition cover-to-cover, or use it as a reference book for its many listings with ready-made solutions of "drop-in" code. This book will teach you the concepts of disconnected data access with ADO.NET; how to create various database details, such as tables, constraints, projects, stored procedures, views, and triggers; how to use SQLXML 3.0 with SQL Server 2000; how to incorporate message queuing into applications using MSMQ 3.0; and more. You'll learn how to master ADO.NET both from within the VS. NET IDE and programmatically.

One of the most popular features carried over from the first edition is the real-world sample application that Carsten builds throughout this book. It's a user management system that's based on SQL Server, Active Directory, and Message Queuing. With this example code, you can connect to SQL Server using any of the three .NET Data Providers: SQL Server .NET Data Provider, OLE DB .NET Data Provider, or ODBC .NET Data Provider. The example code also includes how to connect to and manipulate data in MySQL 3.23.51 or later, Oracle 9i or later, Microsoft Access 2000 or later, and, of course, SQL Server. You will also find guidance on connecting to SQL Server 2000 using the SQLXML 3.0 plug-in to transfer data using XML from managed code or HTTP. Exchange Server 2000 data manipulation is also covered, with original working code.

Database Programming with Visual Basic .NET, Second Edition is the ultimate resource for developers needing to master database programming, written by a recognized Microsoft MVP.

A simple yet detailed book written by a very talented writer. I read the first edition and the second edition is by far a much better book, in particular in the way the material is presented. It does look as if the author needed some experience with the first book to really write some good stuff and he certainly delivers with the second book. I hope he'll do third with the new whidbey stuff coming out.

My favorite chapter is 19 and if you need a book that teaches you about database programming with VB .net and ADO.netb then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Good and detailed book.......2004-05-19

This is one of the better books I've read on the subject of database programming and in particular using the .Net framework. It starts off in a slow pace explaining the details of disconnected database programming and then chapter by chapter it explains how to work with ADO.net and it then rounds off with some 'extras' in teh form of SQLXML and Exchange Server connectivity. Really good book.

5 out of 5 stars Neat and tidy.......2004-03-02

Very detailed book and extremely neat and tidy writing. Not so much more to add other than this is a great way of getting to know ADO.net and otehr database technologies and techniques.

Although this is a somewhat old book, ie. it covers 1.0 of the framework its still an excellent book about many types of data access with .net, especially ado.net. I can recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn ado.net

5 out of 5 stars Yes, this is the book I have been looking for.......2003-10-22

Been through a great number of ADO.NET books, but this is the only one so far that really covers everything I need. Not only does this book cover ADO.NET very well, including the exceptional tables in the appendixes but it also gives me msmq and sqlxml and thats good value. The authors writing style is conscise and accurate and not too dry nor does he fill the book with stupid remarks like some other authors.
