What happened to the CD?.......2007-03-31
I was under the impression (from the detailed ad) when I ordered this textbook for my daughter that the CD was included. In fact, I made sure of it because the class would be difficult for her otherwise. But, no CD came with the book. My daughter was forced to rely on a classmate to burn a copy for her.

For Seductive Journey: American Tourists in France from Jefferson to the Jazz Age, author Harvey Levenstein--Emeritus professor of history at McMaster University--searched through scores of 18th- and 19th-century travel journals and unearthed numbers of insightful, entertaining, and, at times, extremely embarrassing accounts of Americans in France. Including the well-to-do cultural tourists of the late 1700s, the mid-1800s nouveaux riche recreational types, the "Leisure" travelers of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and finally the "doughboys" that descended on France from 1917 to 1930, Levenstein's intelligent examination of these groups and "the cultural history of going abroad" is an all together enjoyable read.
Book Description
For centuries, France has cast an extraordinary spell on travelers. Harvey Levenstein's Seductive Journey explains why so many Americans have visited it, and tells, in colorful detail, what they did when they got there. The result is a highly entertaining examination of the transformation of American attitudes toward French food, sex, and culture, as well as an absorbing exploration of changing notions of class, gender, race, and nationality.
Levenstein begins in 1786, when Thomas Jefferson instructed young upper-class American men to travel overseas for self-improvement rather than debauchery. Inspired by these sentiments, many men crossed the Atlantic to develop "taste" and refinement. However, the introduction of the transatlantic steamship in the mid-nineteenth century opened France to people further down the class ladder. As the upper class distanced themselves from the lower-class travelers, tourism in search of culture gave way to the tourism of "conspicuous leisure," sex, and sensuality. Cultural tourism became identified with social-climbing upper-middle-class women. In the 1920s, prohibition in America and a new middle class intent on "having fun" helped make drunken sprees in Paris more enticing than trudging through the Louvre. Bitter outbursts of French anti-Americanism failed to jolt the American ideal of a sensual, happy-go-lucky France, full of joie de vivre. It remained Americans' favorite overseas destination.
From Fragonard to foie gras, the delicious details of this story of how American visitors to France responded to changing notions of leisure and blazed the trail for modern mass tourism makes for delightful, thought-provoking reading.
"...a thoroughly readable and highly likable book."—Deirdre Blair, New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
american at leisure.......2000-05-29
I had trouble finding books to enhance my first real trip to Paris - Henry Miller just didn't do it- so I bought this book to help me to put together the pieces of my week there. Although there wasn't quite enough name dropping about places we Americans had been, I enjoyed it. Seductive Journey (not a very good title - seemed like something the publisher came up with to sell it) is a very well researched book about what Americans had enough money to travel to Paris in what era, how they got there, and what they did when they got there (rich men in Jefferson's time raising consciousness on fine art, wives of industrial magnates there for their first experience in shopping off the rack and dining out; then, as touring becomes cheaper, middle class women off to the Louvre etc etc). This largely is carried off through quoting diaries of travelers, which must have been de rigeur a century ago. There is a lot of literature review of classic travel logs - good references to Henry James and Mark Twain. Also included is a healthy dose of the French love-hate relationship with their tourists. Although not particularly informative as to places to go and things to see it turned out to be an unexpectedly enjoyable sociologic survey of a particular class - traveling Americans.

Book Description
Songs of the Unsung is the autobiography of Los Angeles jazz musician and activist Horace Tapscott (1934–1999). A pianist who ardently believed in the power of music to connect people, Tapscott was a beloved and influential character who touched many yet has remained unknown to the majority of Americans. In addition to being âhisâ story, Songs of the Unsung is the story of Los Angeles’s cultural and political evolution over the last half of the twentieth century, of the origins of many of the most important avant-garde musicians still on the scene today, and of a rich and varied body of music.
Tapscott’s narrative covers his early life in segregated Houston, his move to California in 1943, life as a player in the Air Force band in the early fifties, and his travels with the Lionel Hampton Band. He reflects on how the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (the âArkâ), an organization he founded in 1961 to preserve and spread African and African-American music, eventually became the Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascensionâa group that not only performed musically but was active in the civil rights movement, youth education, and community programs. Songs of the Unsung also includes Tapscott’s vivid descriptions of the Watts neighborhood insurrection of 1965 and the L.A. upheavals of 1992, interactions with both the Black Panthers and the L.A.P.D., his involvement in Motown’s West Coast scene, the growth of his musical reputation abroad, and stories about many of his musician-activist friends, including Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, Buddy Collette, Arthur Blythe, Lawrence and Wilber Morris, Linda Hill, Elaine Brown, Stanley Crouch, and Sun Ra.
With a foreword by Steven Isoardi, a brief introduction by actor William Marshall, a full discography of Tapscott’s recordings, and many fine photographs, Songs of the Unsung is the inspiring story of one of America’s most unassuming twentieth-century heroes.

Combat.......2007-01-16
I like to play this game all the time, it is really realistic to me.
Good for singleplay... a waste of money for multi........2006-11-26
I tend to buy the strategy guides, more than anything else, to build up my multiplayer game for Xbox Live. I want to learn the intricacies of different maps, learn where weapons and power-ups are, and compare the loadouts available in multiplayer.
Unfortunately, the multiplayer coverage in this book is pretty limp... a footnote, at the end of the book. The maps in this book are micro-sized. The authors don't give any real tips for individual maps. They do have a few interesting tips, but not enough to justify buying this book.
I usually expect much better from Bradygames... their books have given me a powerful advantage with other titles. But the strategy guide for COD3 is just not worth purchasing. Move on to something else.

COD 2 Bradygames Guide.......2006-02-25
This guide helped me to really enjoy the game. I have several Bradygames Guides and all are first class.
As useful as an empty ammo clip.......2005-11-23
Since I had never played a WWII shooter before, I thought it would be a good idea to pick this up when I bought Call of Duty 2. I've gotten hooked on strategy guides in recent years anyway and generally find the maps and other info very helpful. Unfortunately, the Call of Duty 2 Official Strategy Guide is the first one I've ever purchased that I consider a total waste of money.
To begin with, the game itself is actually very straightforward and easy to figure out. The strategy required to finish a given scenario is generally obvious. While I often died during missions, I knew what to try next in order to succeed.
On those few occasions when I felt more challenged, I found the book to be no help at all. They tend to give a very general walk through of the mission along with maps that were very difficult to follow. There was never enough detail to be of any real help. In the end, I figured out how to survive and complete all of the missions on my own just as I would have without the book.
In the final analysis, this book will not justify the money you would spend on it. Call of Duty 2 is challenging in its own way, but it is not a game that demands a clue book. The manual itself is attractive but is ultimately filled with useless filler. Save the money and use it to buy the expansion pack for Call of Duty 2 that will doubtless be released in the coming months.

Lot to desire.......2005-08-12
The book arrived in a timely manor, and in very good shape. I love the game, but the book leaves a lot to be desired. I think that Mark Walker is a much better author, and should write more game guides; but I am happy with the book I have for now. thanks.
Pointless.......2005-03-02
I am a pro at call of duty, and have even made AVI videos of myself gaming...the guide is quite pointless...i can't imagine people having trouble, that's why they have difficulty settings...i have teh guide and gave it to my friend...i'm not really sure why people would buy this...
Great Book.......2004-12-31
This game is EXTREMELY difficult without this book to guide you on your way. The open ended game play makes for a countless amount of options available. This stratagy guide shows you the best routes to take and which will open secret missions or new weapons. A must have for anybody looking to spend hard erned money on a useless book for a great game not needing one.
Waste of money.......2004-12-16
It's not badly written or anything, but it's just useless. You can beat this game without any guide, and besides that, you can find most of it online anyway (for FREE!)
Dont buy it........2004-10-06
Call off Duty was easy enough to beat without the strategy guide. Unless your stuck and cant get past one of the first levels dont buy this. Save you money and get somthing else.
