1 out of 5 stars total waste of money!!!.......2007-04-07

this book was not helpful at all!!!i had just recently got into manga and anime drawing so i thought that this book would be helpful to me you know with the title being "basics for beginners" and all. all it did was show me useless information.all it does is show you characters made out of these weird rectangle type things only and then the finished project (but thats all no hair no clothes no nothing), instead of step-by-step directions on everything. if you are a beginner i would highly reccomend NOT, i repeat NOT getting this book!!! it confused me and didn't actually show me how to draw anything!!!if your a beginner and don't know where to start, your not alone!!! although this is the first book i ever got on the whole anime subject i would suggest some other how to draw manga books but definately not this one. try how to draw manga ultimate manga lessons volumes 1-6 and more how to draw manga volumes 1-4. believe me if you want, if you think diferently and want to try it any way be my guest but in my oppinion it's a total waste of money!!! hope this helped!!!

Bought it as a Christmas gift for one of my nieces. I looked through it before I gave it to her. The book looks like it's got alot to offer. Maybe I'll get one for myself in the future.

1 out of 5 stars tasteless.......2006-06-28

This book tasteless. There are comics in the back of the book where there is a pedophilia scene. A young boy is seduced by a older man. It's not very nice. It also shows how to draw seductivley. This book is not appropriate for young people.

4 out of 5 stars It's awesome .......2005-11-06

I would recommend this for all beggining artist in magna, it has helped me alot, now i'm on the search for a magna book that teaches to draw clothing. This will really increase your drawing prowess

2 out of 5 stars It's better than nothing. But just barely........2006-05-14

While this text covers a great deal of information and is required at community colleges it's as exciting to read as drug warning labels. And you practically need a rossetta stone to drag the pertinent information out of the chapters.

The student CD included requires the student to have AutoCad loaded on their computer to access it. So you need to invest another $800 or so in a seperate computer program in order to access the student disk at home. Otherwise...well, it makes a cool drink coaster.

I only acquired this book because it was required for my class. I hardly even cracked the cover. I used my 2004 copy of "Mastering AutoCad" by George Omura and highly recommend that instead. I only refered to Shumaker's book when encountering a 2005 upgrade (of which there aren't many).

Omura's book has an easy to use index, goes beyond "the basics" and includes a disk with a trial version of ACAD that you can use for at least 30 days. I could look up commands and subjects in the index, breeze through the overview and be functional in minutes.
Shumaker's book is adequate if you have zero ACAD experience, the patience of Job to trudge through the text, no other options or someone is offering to just GIVE it to you. Otherwise and for personal use, go for Omura.

Oh, and don't forget, AutoCad has a HELP menu (F1) if you happen to be stuck for an answer during a test.

In the book there are purple boxes with commands in them that are really helpful.

3 out of 5 stars lots of info: probably in there somewhere.......2000-03-19

while this book appears to exhaustively document the program, I could rarely find helpful information when I ran into specific problems while using the program. I'm currently looking for a book with better clarity and organization

5 out of 5 stars Supervisor Drafting & Graphics Services, City of Winnipeg.......2000-01-06

I have used Terence Shumakers books for teaching for the last eight years. This latest one covering AutoCAD 2000 is no exception. It is one of the best books to teach from, excellent subject explanations and easy to follow samples exercises. I do disagree with the order Terence follows, but it is easily overcome and does not reflect on the book its self.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for beginners and intermediate level........1998-12-11

I have had a chance to review sections of this publication in our local library. I found that it is truly a well written book with lots of exercises and helpful hints for the drafting/design discipline. However, I did not find anything on 3D modeling. Perhaps, you can mention a similar publication (same authors?) with the 3D modeling feature, treated with the same details. Thanks for the info. Is this book available in Toronto, Canada? (bookstore please?).

2 out of 5 stars Perhaps good for beginners...but still of limited usefulness.......2006-03-23

I was very excited about recieving this item...I've been a casual artist for my whole life and have been becoming increasingly interested in joining the gaming industry. I was hoping that this book would bridge the gap between a traditional fine art background and the gaming world at a basic level. Wrong.

This book is a basic drawing book, plain and simple. It takes you through the basics of drawing that you would get with any beginning drawing class; composition, perspective, etc. There are better drawing books out there for this purpose. It was also disconcerting to me that the person who wrote this book is not a particularly strong renderer...some of the illustrations that he has in the book to demonstrate certain principles look rough and have a lot of anatomical/perspective problems. I expected higher quality from someone with so much experience.

If you're a fledgling artist wanting to break into the concept art/gaming field I think your money would be much better spent on art supplies or more serious art/anatomy books. Hang out on conceptart.com and draw draw draw! Pass this book by.

A new, funny, how-to-cartoon book filled with great lessons. Duane Barnhart has expanded his cartooning career from national magazine cartoons, newspaper syndication, and book illustration to include the classroom as an artist-in-residence. He now brings his successful cartooning lessons to everyone in Duane Barnhart's Cartooning Basics. The book carries many endorsements from teachers, parents, professional cartoonists, and most importantly, KIDS. Charles M. Schulz, Creator of Peanuts, wrote the foreword, and initial response indicates the book will become a standard reference in cartooning and teaching.

5 out of 5 stars The classic of the classics.......2002-06-17

Back in the Golden Age of Microcomputing (roughly from '75 to '89 or so) the way people shared programs wasn't through the internet. Instead, it was through typing in program listings in the backs of magazines. "Compute!'s Gazette" was my means of getting software.

When I recently came across a copy of Ahl's "Basic Computer Games" I had to snatch it up immediately. There, contained in 101 program listings are games of varying degrees of quality, but many the games from that Golden Age are in there. Especially that Star Trek(TM) game. [Star Trek is a trademark of the Paramount Pictures Corporation]

Many of the games are just plain silly. Who knows why Ahl included them? Bunny, Poetry, Combat, just to name a few. But there are enough good ones in there to elicit a wave of nostalgia in those of us who lived through (and gamed through) those golden times.

5 out of 5 stars The challenge is converting the game to a more recent langua.......1999-05-22

I never did make it throughout all the 101 games. They were designed on Microsoft 8K Basic Rev.4.0. David H. Ahl is the Founder of "Creative Computing".

By typing in the game you learn how the basic code controls may code functions and algorithms. Like many other technical items this information has been sway surpassed by the industry but it is still fun to mix and match code.

5 out of 5 stars The dawn of a new era, basic games for Computers........1998-08-29

This was the beginning for many people to their love affair with computers. Many simple games that you program yourself in Basic, one of the first computer languages. Not only could you learn simple progamming form this book, but have something tangible to show for it! Easy to use with set-by-step instructions.

        Book Description

The standard version of the Heckscher-Ohlin model of international trade treats the factors of production -- land, labor, and capital -- as essentially analytically similar and symmetrical. In these six essays Ronald Findlay explores modifications to the factor proportions model, looking in particular at what happens when human capital and land use are allowed to vary endogenously.

Findlay extends the factor proportions theory of international trade to consider capital accumulation, income distribution, and factor mobility in a growing world economy. Among the questions he addresses are such fundamental issues as the conditions under which international trade equalizes the rate of interest; the effects of learning and invention on economic growth and comparative advantage; the role of human capital and skill formation in determining patterns of comparative advantage and the reciprocal effect of international trade on these variables through its impact on wage differentials between skilled and unskilled workers; the incorporation of new territories into a trading system by extensions of the frontier and labor migration as in the establishment of the Atlantic economy of the nineteenth century; and the impact of reductions in transport costs of industrial raw materials on global patterns of manufacturing activity and comparative advantage.

3 out of 5 stars Ms. Dowd forgot a few of us.......2001-11-25

I agree with Ms Dowd's defense of single parent families, but she leaves out a very important group-widowed parents. It is not only our political system who misunderstands our family structure, even our friends tend to misunderstand our responsibilities and judge us rather than offer a helping hand. One woman who I assume meant well, (but I cannot be sure if she did this out of pure spite at me for removing my teenage daughter from her clutches) actually created dissention between my child and me because she interfered without asking my permission. Well meaning people, who are in two parent families, often judge us as neglectful people who are not up to the task of seeing our children's needs. They never take the time, however, to ask if I could use a hand with the yard or cars or when I or one of my children are sick. I do not even ask for the help, because I know it would not be done in the spirit of looking out for my family's welfare, but rather it would be done grudgingly and with much resentment. I also get put down for not socializing during the work week, not having time for gossip, etc. I am just a busy widowed mother who has no time for outside interference between me and my children. I have already put one success out there in the world and am working on 2 and 3.

5 out of 5 stars Confidence, hope, validation.......2000-03-19

I read this book as a new single parent. It gave me so much to think about. What's more, it gave me the documentation and the argument to explain why my gut feeling that being a single parent was *good*, was right. This book has dug me out of numerous arguments with people who think that the only way to have a successful family is with a Mom and a Dad. It has wonderful references, and puts together a meaningful look at family structures.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and comprehensive view family structures.......1999-02-27

Not only did I find the discussion of legal, cultural and demographic influences on various family structures well-reasoned and comprehensive, but Ms. Dowd's final vision for fusion of "nontraditional" families into our broader understanding of the family structure was reminiscent of a quote by Foucalt, where he said: "What is good is something that comes through innovation. The good does not exist like that in an atemporal sky, with people who would be like astrologers of the Good, whose job is to determine the favorite nature of the stars. The good is defined by us, it is practiced, it is invented." For me, the book provided an insight into the marginalization of "nontraditional" families, and the inherent falsehood of those static views of the family structure that have tended to discredit family structures that fall outside the paradigmatic circumference.
