Just as software development is an iterative process in which an application is never truly "done," the education of a developer should continue for years. You can use Hardcore Java as a guide to the transition from novice Java programmer to journeyman, or as a map to parts of the language you haven't explored (or explored adequately) in your development work to date. Because of those design goals, this book is something of a catch-all, covering about a dozen general topics ranging from exception-handling to nested classes (and interfaces!) and the reflection API. The coverage clearly derives from the author's "lessons learned" notes, and they're rich with information. If nothing in this book surprises you, you're probably very experienced with Java.

In addition to this book's tutorial function, Hardcore Java puts forth and defends a number of opinions about the design and style of Java software. One example: After explaining how bit fields work--bit fields aren't widely used in Java programming, and their advantages may be interesting to some programmers--Robert Simmons points out that they're inherently limited in their ability to contain data, and that this can cause problems. This is the kind of design tradeoff that more advanced Java programmers have to consider, and Simmons does the Java community a service by showing programmers how to think critically about the capabilities of their language. --David Wall

Topics covered: Advanced Java topics, including final constants, collections, exception handling, and nested classes. There's a useful bit about getting customers to help you design the data models they need, and very extensive coverage of reflection.

Book Description

Java has quickly become one of the most important languages in programming, particularly for professional and enterprise-level projects. From its infancy as a language primarily used for web applets to its maturity through servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans, and database access, Java has become a complex and robust tool for today's developer. Hardcore Java takes this language and breaks it apart, piece by piece, revealing the important secrets and tricks that will take you from a junior-level programmer to a seasoned and expert developer. You'll fly through the fundamentals and quickly find yourself learning about advanced memory management techniques, optimization and bytecode-level enhancements, and the techniques required to build lightning-fast GUIs. Throughout the book, you'll also master the art of writing and maintaining bulletproof and error-proof code, all while grasping the intricacies of the Java language. Hardcore Java covers: Hardcore Java is an invaluable addition to every programmer's library, and even the most advanced developers will find themselves moving beyond their own conceptions into truly advanced applications of the language. Thousands of lines of code, heavily commented and easily runnable, illustrate each concept in the book.

2 out of 5 stars Hardcore? Hardly........2007-08-16

I usually don't participate in these reviews, except to read them, and I wish I'd read some before buying this book. As a hardcore C++ programmer and moderately accomplished Java programmer, the title lead me to believe I would be getting something along the lines of what Myers and Sutter did for C++. I was sadly dissapointed. While there are a few nuggets in the text, it is also filled with errors and bad advice. Proposing not using anonymous inner classes because they're "not mainstream" and "hard to read", and more telling "not object oriented", tells me the author needs to do a more thorough research before writing his next book. Any technique, when abused or misused can produce bad code, however anonymous inner classes is an elegant solution to a particular problem set, and should be encouraged in those areas, not broadly poo-poo'd. Educate to the right uses, not discourage because "I find it hard to read". This was the diatribe in the book that pushed me to write a review. If you get this book for free, and have a high tolerance level, there are one or two things to be taken from it, however if you are a novice Java programmer, seek input from someone senior before buying into many of the bad pieces of software engineering advice offered by this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book for Junior Java Developer.......2006-01-21

With all the criticism and found errors being correct, junior Java developer absolutely should not ignore this book.

Book is filled up with the good practical techniques and rules of the thumb described in a simple and effective manner. Some techniques, for example use of readResolve method in constant serialization, are explained better and in more practical manner than "Effective Java" does.

Real book's name should be "Practical Java development for beginners"

2 out of 5 stars don't buy if you're an experienced java programmer.......2005-09-01

No need to read this book if you already have some experience with Java in a moderate sized project. I could not find any exceptional knowledge and is a little advanced than an entry level book. Book does not live up to its promise.

3 out of 5 stars Intermediate Java by a peer.......2005-05-17

This book disappointed me. The title raised so high expectations. I started very enthusiastically to read the book and ended in wading through quite a mess.

The level of the book is intermediate, certainly not advanced.

The topics and treatment in this book are quite mixed in level and style. A little about the language itself (so I learned happily about the existence of labels in Java), a lot about the API (here I appreciated most the dynamic proxy and the reference package discussion) and even an entire chapter on design (which I did not like at all).

If you want to learn a little more about Java and have already read the top notch "Effective Java", then this book is full of useful suggestions of areas for further exploration.

4 out of 5 stars Deep coverage, but not hardcore.......2005-03-12

The book's title is misleading. The book delves into some not-so-well-known aspects of Java. Unfortunately, the author's arrogant tone is distracting. I also don't agree with the word hardcore in the title. All in all, if you've only been working with Java for a few years, then this book will open your eyes.

Book Description

Hardcore JFC (previously announced as Mastering the Java Foundation Classes) is a comprehensive guide to the functionality and practical use of the Java Foundation Classes (JFC). It presents intermediate and advanced techniques for exploiting the power and flexibility of JFC and the Swing component set. With a strong focus on fundamentals and pragmatic applications, the author shows how JFC and Swing can add tremendous value to Java applications. Several concrete illustrations reveal how to enhance the JFC architecture, such as leveraging the Model/View/Controller paradigm, customizing and developing new components, and techniques for creating look-and-feel user interface classes. Thousands of lines of effective, well-constructed and reusable example code demonstrate important design and development issues. Any Java professional will find this book to be a vital reference.

      Book Description

Jurisprudence: Theory and Context is aimed at students new to the study of legal philosophy. At the same time, it offers new ideas and perspectives that will be of interest to established scholars. The first part of the book offers a brief overview of the role and method of legal philosophy. The second part introduces important individual theorists of the nature of law - H.L.A. Hart, Ronald Dworkin, Lon Fuller, John Finnis, and Hans Kelsen - while also discussing the schools of thought (e.g., legal positivism and natural law theory) they represent. Common and recurrent themes are discussed in the third part: from broad-ranging topics such as justice, punishment, and statutory interpretation, to the questions raised about the intersection of law and morality, to analytical questions regarding rights. This section also includes a novel analysis of how many legal theories can be better understood by considering their relative dependence on either "will" or "reason." The fourth section introduces the modern, critical approaches that have dominated recent jurisprudential writing: legal realism, law and economics, critical legal studies, feminism, critical race theory, law and literature, pragmatism, and postmodernism. The second edition includes many new topics (including Justice, Punishment, Common Law Reasoning and Precedent, Law and Literature, Pragmatism and Postmodernism, Game Theory, and Public Choice Theory) as well as updated and expanded material from the first edition.

      5 out of 5 stars Beginner's guide with depth.......2005-03-28

A common feature of introductions to jurisprudence is a distressing superficiality, and Brian Bix's successful avoidance of it - in addition to all his other merits as a reliable provider of clear, examination-oriented summaries of others' views - makes his book quite unusual among similar guides to the subject. Depth is of course an elusive quality, and might well underlie a backhanded compliment, but Bix's refusal to be superficial, combined with clarity and breadth, reminds me of such brilliant invitations to other subjects as Thomas Nagel's 'What Does It All Mean?' and Bernard Williams's 'Morality'.

4 out of 5 stars A Clear, Elegant, Scholarly Review of the Philosophy of Law........2002-12-09

This is a well-written summary and analysis of the important issues in jurisprudence. The author examines contemporary debates among legal academics and philosophers concerning questions of legal interpretation, the so-called "hermeneutic turn" in Positivist jurisprudence, analytical method in the administration of law, conceptual analysis and the possibilities for doctrinal development.

The author's Harvard/Oxford training is evident in the attention to detail and in the precision and cogency of the discussion of even the most technical issues. Yet there does seem to be a lack of sympathy for more radical approaches to legal scholarship, for Critical Legal Studies, for example, and for recent developments in legal theory which are, one suspects, not very attractive to the author, Professor Brian Bix of the University of Minnesota.

So this is not the book to read if you want to dazzle your friends with trendy, postmodernist discourse at the local coffee house or in your law school cafeteria. (I particularly regret that insufficient attention is devoted to the important work of Roberto Mangabeirra Unger.) Otherwise, the book is highly recomended to theoretically-minded lawyers and students of philosophy.

      5 out of 5 stars Exemplary.......2000-10-22

Professor Bix has a genius for writing about the most difficult and frequently arcane aspects of legal theory with a remarkable lightness of touch, an assurance, an authoritativeness, and a degree of accessibility which no other writer in this area can match. This second edition of his successful introductory overview of legal theory deserves - and will attract - a wide audience of appreciative readers. Always deeply fair-minded, honest, and (most important, this) clear, whatever your reason for wanting to know more about legal theory, you could not do better than to start with this book.

3 out of 5 stars The bix theory.......2000-09-26

Bix is a genius. anyone who reads the study of Law is aware of this. however, he suffers from an almost uncontrollable desire to use eighty words where only ten would do. Perhaps this is done in order to promulgate the 'self' idea, although in the preface he rather modestly epostulates that he can't compare himself to the leaders in his field.

Certain sections i.e. chapter 2 deal with almost existential questions...why? who? but are rather flavourless.

However, by the eighth chapter & his views on feminist influences, Bix is well into his subject & his critique is well developed & his construct provides an intriguing perspective on Jurisprudence.

This volume is definitely the one 'must read' for all beginner law students, but its text is somewhat daunted, and I fear it will be a 'wade thru' rather than a delight.

          Book Description

The study of natural law theories is presently one of the most fruitful areas of research in the studies of early modern intellectual history, and moral and political theory. Likewise the historical significance of the Enlightenment for the development of `modernisation' in many different forms continues to be the subject of controversy. This collection therefore offers a timely opportunity to re-examine both the coherence of the concept of an `early Enlightenment', and the specific contribution of natural law theories to its formation. The works of major thinkers such as Grotius, Hobbes, Locke, Malebranche, Pufendorf and Thomasius are reassessed, and the appeal and importance of the discourse of natural jurisprudence both to those working inside conventional educational and political structures and to those outside - such as in the Huguenot diaspora - is evaluated. This volume will therefore be of importance to all those readers concerned to study the character of the debates in the period 1650-1750 surrounding moral and political agency, sovereignty and obligation, and the legitimation of religious toleration in the divergent states and patriotic contexts of Europe.

            Book Description

This work brings together eight linked essays which make the case for a revival of general jurisprudence in response to the challenges of globalisation, explores how far the heritage of Anglo-American jurisprudence and comparative law is adequate to meeting the challenges, and puts forward an agenda for general jurisprudence and comparative law, especially in the English-speaking world in the first ten or twenty years of the millennium. The book is traditional in focussing on the mainstream of Anglo-American intellectual heritage and moderately radical in identifying the need for rethinking basic issues and putting forward a series of provocative propositions as a basis for discussion.

This book examines Renaissance modes of interpretation as they arise in legal contexts, and relates them to modern debates about meaning and its determination. By placing legal hermeneutic theories in their institutional and pedagogical contexts, the author is able to give an account of Renaissance thought showing how it operates in its own terms, and in relation to the thought of the medieval period. Renaissance legal thought is also compared to modern discussions of interpretation, allowing a critical examination of its coherence and consistency.

                Book Description

How can religious liberty be guaranteed in societies where religion pervades everyday life? In The Wheel of Law, Gary Jacobsohn addresses this dilemma by examining the constitutional development of secularism in India within an unprecedented cross-national framework that includes Israel and the United States. He argues that a country's particular constitutional theory and practice must be understood within its social and political context. The experience of India, where religious life is in profound tension with secular democratic commitment, offers a valuable perspective not only on questions of jurisprudence and political theory arising in countries where religion permeates the fabric of society, but also on the broader task of ensuring religious liberty in constitutional polities.

India's social structure is so entwined with religion, Jacobsohn emphasizes, that meaningful social reform presupposes state intervention in the spiritual domain. Hence India's "ameliorative" model of secular constitutionalism, designed to ameliorate the disabling effects of the caste system and other religiously based practices. Jacobsohn contrasts this with the "visionary" secularism of Israel, where the state identifies itself with a particular religion, and with America's "assimilative" secularism.

Constitutional globalization is as much a reality as economic globalization, Jacobsohn concludes, and within this phenomenon the place of religion in liberal democracy is among the most vexing challenges confronting us today. A richly textured account of the Indian experience with secularism, developed in a broad comparative framework, this book is for all those seeking ways to respond to this challenge.
