Lost Without It.......2007-05-13
very well written. had never seen a concertina up close let alone play one. had me playing tunes in a week.
A Very Good Place for the Rank Amateur to Begin.......2005-09-26
I have been teaching myself to play the English concertina, and in the course of doing so I have acquired a number of tutors, including this one, Alistair Anderson's "Concertina Workshop," Dick Mile's "The Concise English Concertina," and Allan Atlas's "Contemplating the Concertina."
Each has their strengths, but in the beginning, I always found myself returning to this short, 24-page work. Why? Because every one of the tunes included I could actually play, and each has taught me something new.
The book begins with a well illustrated, six-page introduction to the English concertina, which nods at the history of the instrument and carefully explains the difference between English, Anglo and Duet concertinas. A fingering chart is provided, which is not only a useful reference but which may help you figure out whether you have a tenor or treble English concertina.
Next are four pages of "Diagrams Showing How to Play the Scales." I skipped most of this the first time through, but now that I've progressed, it's useful.
Finally, we reach an annotated "Selection of Tunes and Song Accompaniments," which contains the music in both regular and labeled-button form (rather as guitar music often has chord symbols above the music, only for the concertina one is told whether it is a right-side or left-side button, R or L, along with its positional number).
These songs are manageable for the beginner and are fun to play. They are: The "Winster Gallop" in the key of C, "The British Grenadiers," "The Man in the Moon" (one of my favorites), "The Week Before Easter*," "The Dorset Four-Hand Reel" (which is a joy to play), "Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl*," "Planxty Irwin," "John Barleycorn*," "Adieu, Sweet Lovely Nancy*," "Jockey to the Fair," "Off She Goes," and "Lord Franklin*." Note: The selections above that I've starred include words as well as music.
The last page of the book covers basic "Care and Maintenance of the Concertina" and includes a brief section on "Where to Go from Here."
Another good thing about this book, technically, is that the music and words are large enough to read with ease, even for those of us with presbyopia. Alistair Anderson's otherwise-excellent tutor has type and music that is only half the size!
All-in-all, this has been the English Concertina with which I've spent the most time and which has helped me most in getting started.
Not very good, I'm afraid.......2002-08-09
There are much better tutors for the English concertina out there than this, although it has to be said that these would have to be bought from the UK ...This reads to me like something knocked up in a weekend in order to earn a few bob from Hohner.
Dr. Steve's Review of Handbook for English Concertina.......2001-05-31
The Handbook for English Concertina, by Roger Watson, is elementary, and takes you from the very introductory elements of first finding the notes positionally, and guides you through the scales one by one.
If you are a complete novice, as I was you will find this to be a great place to start. Having some musical background will enable you to play the songs in the this guide on a piano, or piano accordion and hear what they sound like. The book is simple, to the point, and certainly a marvelous place to begin the study of the English concertina. It is a short book, which in some respects is good - you know that you will reach completion in a short period of time giving you a feeling of achievement. TRY IT - YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Book Description
The mass protests that greeted attempts to open the 1893 Chicago World's Fair on a Sunday seem almost comical today in an era of seven-day convenience and twenty-four-hour shopping. But the issue of the meaning of Sunday is one that has historically given rise to a wide range of strong emotions and pitted a surprising variety of social, religious, and class interests against one another. Whether observed as a day for rest, worship, cultural uplift, family time, or time-and-a-half, Sunday has always been a day apart in the American week.
Supplementing wide-ranging historical research with the reflections and experiences of ordinary individuals, Alexis McCrossen traces conflicts over the meaning of Sunday that have shaped the day in the United States since 1800. She investigates cultural phenomena such as blue laws and the Sunday newspaper, alongside representations of Sunday in the popular arts. Holy Day, Holiday attends to the history of religion, as well as the histories of labor, leisure, and domesticity.

a good read for all "holydays".......2006-11-06
Over the years I've observed that we human beings are not content at living a day to day existence but rather, always seem to be looking ahead to one significant event or another, to add excitement and added meaning to our lives.
In "Holidays are Holy Days", Alex Gondola takes hold of this truth in 32 creative sermons showing ways in which secular holidays are often infused with sacred meaning and how we might enrich and enliven our Christian "holy days" to deepen our faith.
Along with his own astute observations, discerning use of scripture and theological insight, he has crafted a series of provocative stories and illustrations that tug at the emotions and challenge us to new ways of thinking about all holy/holidays!
Did it Again.......2006-11-03
Alex Gondola's books of sermons have been a big help to both clergy and laity. He has done it again with Holidays are Holy Days, speaking a good Word
on special Sundays from secular celebrations like Labor Day to church year festivals ("I Love Luther") like Reformation Sunday.

Book Description
From concept to distribution, those involved in film and programme making come into contact with many legal topics. Copyright, moral rights, contract law, libel and slander, employment law, tax law, obscenity and indecency laws, contempt of court and even Official Secrets Act are many perplexing areas of the law that need to be understood and dealt with during the completion of a project.
This User's Guide sets these difficult areas of the law in context and tackles them in practice to acquaint film and programme makers with useful, practical insight into potential problem areas.
In accessible non-legal language the book takes a logical approach through a deal-acquiring rights in literary and other material, developing and adapting that material to production stage, raising finance for development and production, concluding agreements with financiers, contracting cast and crew, securing locations, obtaining insurance and exploiting the finished production. It also includes an advisory section on setting up and running a company.
Book Description
“ClickOnce demos may look simple, but those techniques only work for simple applications. Brian Noyes gives us the information we need to use ClickOnce in the real world, and he does it with a comprehensive and organized presentation. If you expect your smart client application to move very far beyond ‘Hello,World,’ you’ll want this book to help you deploy it.”
—
Billy Hollis, president/owner, Elysian Consulting, Microsoft Regional Director
“Once again Brian has outdone himself. As a writer, I tend to be very critical of all technical publications, including my own . . . and it is such a pleasure to read anything Brian writes because he studies his topics well, resulting in an accurate, thorough, yet concise piece of work. ClickOnce being a new technology that deals with the pains we all have with application deployment, versioning, and security, it is important to have a text that will guide you through the learning process, give you sound advice for adopting the technology, and explain why you should even care. Brian gives his readers all of that.”
—
Michele Leroux Bustamante, chief architect, IDesign, Microsoft Regional Director
“ClickOnce is the key to Windows and smart client deployment. Brian’s book is the key to successfully using ClickOnce. This book walks you through using ClickOnce, from the basics to advanced scenarios. It is an excellent resource.”
—
Rockford Lhotka, principal technology evangelist, Magenic Technologies, Microsoft Regional Director
“Brian covers ClickOnce with a view to real-world deployment issues, which isobviously based on real-world experience. In and of itself, that is enough forme to buy the book. However, it is an even better investment by virtue of thefact that ClickOnce is a core part of the .NET Framework for Windows Forms2.0 now, and Windows Presentation Foundation in the future.”
—
Michael Weinhardt, SDK programmer/writer, Application Model,Windows Presentation Foundation, Microsoft
“This book covers the most important ingredient needed for the success of asmart client application—deployment. The author’s unassuming writing style, combined with his in-depth coverage of the topic, makes this book an invaluableresource for all serious smart client developers.”
—
Vishwas Lele, principal architect, Applied Information Sciences,Microsoft Regional Director

Customer Reviews:
Informative, Light Reading.......2007-09-02
I just finished Noyes' book on Microsoft's .NET ClickOnce API and found it to be helpful in understanding most aspects of ClickOnce. It provides illustrations of the user's experience when installing an application through the API, and the book is helpful by providing information for making proactive choices when designing the architecture of your application (such as the security consequences of utilizing 3rd party controls).
Thorough coverage of an interesting technology..........2007-02-09
One of the reasons I chose to review Smart Client Deployment with ClickOnce: Deploying Windows Forms Applications with ClickOnce by Brian Noyes is that I had never heard of the ClickOnce technology. After going through this book, I'm now aware of what ClickOnce is and what it does. Noyes does a good job in covering a piece of software that can greatly simplify the life of a .NET developer...
Contents: Introduction to ClickOnce; Initial Deployment with ClickOnce; Automatic Application Updates; On-Demand Updates; Application and Data File Management; ClickOnce Security; Prerequisite Deployment with the Bootstrapper; Advanced ClickOnce Topics; ClickOnce Deployment of WPF Applications; Index
The "thick client" application is starting to make a resurgence on the desktop, but with it comes the problem of keeping the application up-to-date on possibly thousands of computers. ClickOnce is Microsoft's answer to that. As part of Visual Studio, ClickOnce packages an application for download and installation from the network. Then as new versions of the software become available, the application will check the home directory to see if there's an update. If so, the user has a choice (unless the developer mandates the update) to install the updates or wait until later. Bottom line is that you get the increased functionality and features of a non-browser-based application without the deployment nightmares of large software suites (like Office). Noyes starts off with an explanation of how ClickOnce works and what problems it solves, and then he dives into all the details of the software; how it works and how it can be configured to meet your particular requirements. Because the book is more tool-focused than language-focused, it really doesn't matter whether you're using Visual Basic or C#. Either type of application can use the ClickOnce technology. I was impressed at the integration with Visual Studio, and he definitely sold me on the necessity of utilizing software such as this. This was also good background material for me, as the software platform I work on will be going to this type of deployment scenario soon. I'll have a much better idea of how it all should function after reading this book...
Practical.Compact.Easy-to-Read.Up-to-Date.......2007-01-15
This book is a 5-stars book carrying completed information about ClickOnce from the beginning to the finish deployment of your project.
It is practical, compact, easy-to-read, and up-to-date. You will enjoy reading it and finish it in few days.
For .NET developer, it is a must-have book, and worth for your money. Interestingly, it shows how-to-use "ClickOnce" for both Windows and Web applications. This completed information is hardly found in other books.
I am a .NET developer who has experienced for several projects. I recommend this book with Deploying .NET Applications from APress. If you can afford two books, get them both. If you can get only one of them, get this one because in my opinion, it carried deeper, wider, updated information.
Enjoy ClickOnce!!!
Very Thorough.......2007-01-14
I gave this book 5 stars because it is very thorough. It covers everything there is to know about ClickOnce deployment. The author didn't miss any topic and covers the topics very thoroughly.
It wasn't what I had hoped for because I already own 'Deploying NET Applications Learning MSBuild and ClickOnce'. I was hoping for more detail on securing the files downloaded to the Client, and some better advice one securing running ClickOnce with parameters. The was no new info.
Both books offered the same information, and depth on the topics. So if you own 'Deploying NET Applications Learning MSBuild and ClickOnce' I would not buy this book.
If you don't own a book on ClickOnce, and you want to learn all the details about it, this is an excellent book.

Great Examples.......2007-01-22
I like the way this book is laid out and I like the examples. It is particularly useful to be able to download the examples and look at the code firsthand. This author actually reads his email and was willing to explain an item in more detail for me. I'm sure this book would be helpful to anyone needing to learn more about deployment using these methods.
Overview but little details.......2007-01-17
This is just an overview summary of MSBuild. Lots of properties are mentioned but no indication of how to use them and what the parameters are. However, it seems to be the only book on the market. Read this book first then you must go to MSDN to get the details. MSBuild in general is not very well documented. These authors do not give any practical examples unfortunately.
ClickOnce... as easy as it gets.......2006-11-10
This book explains how to use ClickOnce in Real-World Scenarios. It does not only explain what you need to do to get ClickOnce running with your app, but also how things work behind the scenes, and why MS built ClickOnce the way they did. First we were a bit shy to use ClickOnce, because we thought it might be just another bloated MS Technology. Thanks to Sayeds Book, however, we spared the work to write our own solution, and we are confident to have the right solution for our needs. Thanks, Sayed!
a sweet little book which teaches the ins, outs, and subtleties of .NET deployment.......2006-07-14
Excerpt from C# Online.NET (CSharp-Online.NET) Review:
"Deploying .NET Applications is a very readable little book designed to teach .NET developers the new deployment technologies. It covers virtually all of the deployment scenarios you might encounter. It works through numerous deployment examples using various options. And, it shows you how to extend MSBuild with custom loggers and tasks."
