The meteoric career of the Austrian cellist Emanuel Feuermann ended with his sudden and tragic death in 1942, aged only thirty-nine. A brilliant soloist and chamber performer, many expected him to inherit from Pablo Casals the reputation of the greatest cellist of all time. The trio he formed with Jasha Heifetz and Artur Rubinstein was considered the leading chamber ensemble in the world. This new biography of Feuermann -- a rich combination of documentary and oral history and gripping narrative -- discusses his life, work, and legacy and awards him the place in musical history that he was denied by his early death.

Born one hundred years ago in a humble Galician shtetl, Feuermann grew to maturity in a tumultuous era. Annette Morreau gives an account of the world wars, politics, music culture, and recording history that form the context of his achievements. She also provides invaluable detail about Feuermann's life, drawing on interviews and private letters of family, colleagues, students, and friends, as well as on a wealth of first-hand recollections from some of the most distinguished musicians of the twentieth century. Morreau describes Feuermann's unique style of playing, basing her assessments on the many surviving recordings he made and on contemporary press reviews gathered worldwide. Moreover, so that readers can judge Feuermann's extraordinary talent for themselves, a CD with examples of his performances, some never before released, is included with the book.

In the years since World War II, commercial television has become the most powerful force in American culture. It is also the quintessential example of postmodernist culture. This book studies how The Twilight Zone, The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, and The X-Files display many of the central characteristics that critics and theorists have associated with postmodernism, including fragmentation of narratives and characters, multiplicity in style and genre, and the collapse of traditional categorical boundaries of all kinds. The author labels these series "strange TV" since they challenge the conventions of television programming, thus producing a form of cognitive estrangement that potentially encourages audiences to question received ideas. Despite their challenges to the conventions of commercial television, however, these series pose no real threat to the capitalist order. In fact, the very characteristics that identify these series as postmodern are also central characteristics of capitalism itself, especially in its late consumerist phase. An examination of these series within the context of postmodernism thus confirms Fredric Jameson's thesis that postmodernism is a reflection of the cultural logic of late capitalism. At the same time, these series do point toward the potential of television as a genuinely innovative medium that promises to produce genuinely new forms of cultural expression in the future.

A fun yet solid look at 'TV culture'.......2003-04-02

This book is a set of essays dedicated to thoughts about some of the surrealist and post-modernist elements in popular "strange" TV shows, from "The Twilight Zone" in the 1950's through "Twin Peaks" in the 80's and "The X-Files" in the 90's.

It is an academically focused book with references, etc. However, if you like reading about how culture was shaped by television and vice versa, or if you wouldn't mind reading a little bit of critical thinking about some of your favorite pop-culture TV shows, this book is a good choice.

It was a pleasant feeling to get the impression that the author enjoyed watching the shows as much as he liked expounding on his theories about them. The essays were humorous at times, and this tempered the academic tone that otherwise could have made "Strange TV" a very dry book.

A beautiful little book.......2002-05-12

This is a beautiful little book about a man dedicated to his craft and the relationship he developed with a radio commentator 40 years his junior. Bob Edwards brings Red Barber to life and anyone fortunate enough to have heard their all too short weekly get togethers will enjoy the background information on the amazing Red Barber.
Edwards voice is familiar to millions but he grew to respect and admire this (perhaps) old fashioned southern gentleman and his gentle ways. Barber was truly a man of strong convictions and a basic goodness that shines through in this book. Heartwarming and fascinating.

If you're brand new to web page authoring like myself, the "Bible" is an excellent guide. I bought it on the strength of a review here at Amazon.... Everything "ep" wrote on that review is true. The Quick Start Book is exactly what it is - a quick start, and it's good. It helped me quickly understand the basics of FrontPage 2000.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Bible by Edelbrock and Karlin is an excellent supplement to an excellent software. It's not perfect, like "ep" pointed out, but I'm building a departmental intranet using only this book and the program's user help index.

This book is good, but the problem lies in the application software itself. Frontpage is the worst ever happens to me. If I'd known Dreamweaver, I'd never had spent 2 weeks learning the Frontpage. You'd love the bible series if you're a beginner, but if you want something more advanced, then look else where.

A bloated piece of junk.

If you want crossbrowser compatability, don't buy FrontPage. p. 462 "The bottom line on DHTML effects: they only work with Microsoft's browser. TIP: The DHTML effects are controlled by an included JavaScript file called animate.js. You can also edit this file to deal with the Netscape browser."

Isn't that why I bought the *(*$&$#* book! GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN ACTUALLY USE!

If you want ASP, don't look here either. Chapter 18 refers you to "a later chapter", chapter 21 refers you back to 18 and "a later chapter" that I couldn't find, I think I was just too annoyed to search.

Although it claims to be a book for all levels of users, it is best suited for advanced users.

The first two sections of the book cover the rudimentary features of Word 2000, such as navigating the user interface and determining which document template you should be using. Parts 3 through 6, which account for over two-thirds of the book, cover a variety of the advanced topics with clarity, honesty, and insight.

For example, the authors handle complicated topics like field codes in a format that almost anyone can understand. They also conscientiously tackle subjects like master documents, making sure to acknowledge how difficult master documents can be to manage. Common problems, such as disappearing text at page ends or pictures that do not display fully (or at all) are easily explained throughout the text.

If you want to buy one book that will help you make the most of your time using Word 2000, consider Microsoft Word 2000 Bible. Don't Try This At Home.......2002-04-07

I know a good deal about computers and Word. Yet I found this book to be very complicated almost as though it was written by programmers rather than teachers. It would make a good adjunct to classroom instruction but should not be counted upon for teaching oneself at home. Word is exasperating enough in its own right; I found this book just added to my frustrations.

Good Book, but . . . . ........2000-06-13

I thought this was a very decent book. It covers all of the things that you will find in the other books, but not what I was really looking for. . . I am most anticipating a Word book by the author of "Anatomy of a Macro Virus" as it appeared in the MOD magazine. His name is "driza" (pretty sure), but I'm not 100%. This book was somewhat helpful, but not really on the edge. It seems as if all the Word books lately are pretty much the same - run the macro recorder and talk about the code. What I really want is a book that TEACHES me something that I don't know.

Too expensive, but of possible use..........2000-05-11

I got this mainly for the information about Outlook and while the book is by no means useless, it is also disappointing. It's not consistent with Outlook 2000 Corporate or Workgroup (it can still help but the examples and screenshots are not entirely appropriate) and there are errors in the book, as well as downright bad English. Still, if you can get it cheap or for free, it might be worth something.
