Book Description
"If you'd like a glimpse at how the next generation is going to program, this book is a good place to start."
—Gregory V. Wilson, Dr. Dobbs Journal (October 2004)
Build Your Own Automated Software Testing Tool
Whatever its claims, commercially available testing software is not automatic. Configuring it to test your product is almost as time-consuming and error-prone as purely manual testing.
There is an alternative that makes both engineering and economic sense: building your own, truly automatic tool. Inside, you'll learn a repeatable, step-by-step approach, suitable for virtually any development environment. Code-intensive examples support the book's instruction, which includes these key topics:
- Conducting active software testing without capture/replay
- Generating a script to test all members of one class without reverse-engineering
- Using XML to store previously designed testing cases
- Automatically generating testing data
- Combining Reflection and CodeDom to write test scripts focused on high-risk areas
- Generating test scripts from external data sources
- Using real and complete objects for integration testing
- Modifying your tool to test third-party software components
- Testing your testing tool
Effective Software Test Automation goes well beyond the building of your own testing tool: it also provides expert guidance on deploying it in ways that let you reap the greatest benefits: earlier detection of coding errors, a smoother, swifter development process, and final software that is as bug-free as possible. Written for programmers, testers, designers, and managers, it will improve the way your team works and the quality of its products.
Customer Reviews:
Can not download the example code.......2006-02-18
I got this book, after reading into the first 6 chapters, I decided to try the sample codes. The book claims that the codes are downloadable from www.sybex.com, but when I went there, there is no download link for this book, what a disappointment! I want my money back!
not much of use.......2006-01-18
If you want to learn about a few classes in .Net only you can buy this book for fun. Actually in MSDN you can almost get all the information and this is a entry level book. If you read any .net programming book for about 1 week you get all the information written in length in this book already.
Look at the page 119 function ConvChar, he even copied everything from MSDN decoder class, even the comments! That is outrageous!
Reinventing the wheel? Limited and fails to Deliver.......2005-12-12
Kanglin Li's "Effective Software Test Automation" which is subtitled as "Developing an Automated Software Testing Tool" fails to deliver what it promises to be, a solution to automated software testing.
The core emphasis of this book is on reflection based correctness evaluation and showing a .NET implementation for this. It gives a brief introduction to commercial testing toolkits available for instance Compuware's DevPartner Studio, Parasoft's Insure++, Mercury's Interactive, Object Tester, IBM's Rational Suite, Segue S/w, Testworks as well as open source tools like Ant (not a testing tool by the way), Junit, Jprobe Cactus and HttpUnit. In the meantime, it conviniently leaves out Nunit which essentially does the same thing explained in this book and in a much better and more efficient way. Test scripts are easier to write, automate and it's open source with a VS.NET IDE plug-in.
An optimist's note; it discusses usage of Excel automation and XML manip from from C# which provides some good code recipes with explanations. Also the early phase test scripts for test driven development / XP practices is a good overview. It's just that this is not the core purpose of the book.
I found this book serving little purpose for developers test automation solution provision since there are several existing open source / commercial tools available in market which provide a better feature-set. However, if you are interested in learning reflection, want to extend an existing in-house testing framework for .NET, want to learn how test cases be created against assemblies etc, it might worth a read.
We value this book useful.......2004-08-27
This book fits our current and future projects and provides enough material to complete our tasks. Our group likes this book because:
1. It is easily to read. The topics are well presented and clearly defined. The examples are designed to solve problems from real world software development projects.
2. It presents software test basics in the words of programming languages.
3. The book introduces the test concepts and uses C# .NET as examples to develop a tool to do almost all the tedious jobs for software testing, which the other tools can not do, and the other books never mention.
4. It explains how and why each line of code is used to achieve the software test automation instead of specific programming technologies of a language.
5. It is not a software test dictionary (or a bible), or an inventory of available software testing tools. I don¡¯t like to read a book which degrades the works of the others.
6. It repeats little content the other books, web pages or sources cover. The testing functions are effective and different from the available testing tools as I know of (Winrunner, Rational Test)
7. It helps developers produce good code, helps testers conduct the test with ease, and helps managers setup a high code quality standard.
8. Finally, it helps us to get a really and completely automated testing tool.
Somewhat limited.......2004-07-01
This book is NOT generic to all types of platforms as it purports. In fact, if you are not programming in an Windows environment you will get very little from this book.
The test tool created is only one and claims, on the jacket cover, to be a great replacement for the major vendor tools. While I agree the major tools aren't all they claim to be, neither is this one. It's limited in usage to very specific kinds of tests and is definitely not the silver bullet the jacket would have you believe. In fact, it's a similar subset to some of the vendor tools.
There are even more areas in which the .Net platform can be used for testing. Some key areas such as debugging and tracing are missing from this text. How about the use of nUnit? What about using .Net to access databases? This is not a thorough treatment, but it's fine that it's not. It's just that it claims to be more than it is.
After all is said and done, this book is worth buying for Windows test professionals, so that's why I give it 3 stars. I just resent being told, again and again, that someone has the "answer" to software testing. Get with it folks, software testing takes discipline and rigor and there is no way to "microwave" your project through a thorough software test process. This book does provide valuable knowledge for your Windows test project and great info on .Net to ADD to your existing test expertise.

Book Description
The inclusion and factoring of political risk into accounting and non-accounting decisions is crucial if multinational firms are to avoid negative consequences ranging from unprofitable business environments to the outright expropriation of their assets. In a work that will be of particular value to professionals and academics in international and domestic finance, accounting, and management, the authors examine the characteristics of environments that give rise to political risk, explore the relationship between low economic growth and high political risk, and differentiate between definitions and forecasting models of political risk. They also provide a unique forecasting model to explain and predict risk, and they suggest alternative strategies for managing political risk.

Book Description
Fully updated and expanded, The ISO 9000 Handbook, Fourth Edition is essential for implementing ISO 9001:2000, contemplating third-party certification/ registration for an organization, or learning about the global quality management system that is revolutionizing business. A bonus CD-ROM features guidance from each of QSU Publishing's Big Ten registrars of North America and text of ISO 9001:2000, ISO 9000:2000 and ISO 9004:2000.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Resource!.......2002-12-17
This wonderful fourth edition of this classic ISO 9000 resource was released in late 2002. The ISO 9000 Handbook Fourth Edition from Robert Peach contains all new content on the most recent revisions to ISO 9000 and includes a bonus CD-ROM containing transition guidance from each of QSU Publishing's Big Ten Registrars of North America along with the verbatim text of ISO 9000:2000, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000. This is a very good deal considering that the standards alone, if purchased separately, cost more than the price of the fourth edition Handbook. It is also important to specify that you want The ISO 9000 Handbook Fourth Edition Edited by Robert Peach as there are several similar-sounding titles out there.
Great Desktop Aid for Implementors.......1999-10-31
Immensely useful to me as a implementor, thanks to the various subject matter experts that have contributed their knowledge. Gave me a good perspective on QS 9000.
Nice printing but the Publisher skimped on bookbinding.......1999-09-29
The Publisher chose a hardbound book with gold foil stamping on the spine only with a nice UV coated dust jacket. The paper is a nice 90 lb enamel stock. But the publisher skimped on the book binding. On a two and 1/4 inch thick book the Publisher chose not to sew the binding. The Publisher chose not to burst-bind either. The binding is milled clean then a perfect bound notch was used with PUR glue. The book doesn't even have headbands which would have cost 1/10th of a cent per book! Why choose such nice printing and then skimp on the most important part, the binding? The binding is all right. The problem is that the price is not commensurate with the quality of the binding. McGraw-Hill priced this book like a text book where there is only a limited market and a limited time window the Publisher can sell the book. This is not the case with this title. The Publisher should engage in market segmentation pricing tactics that doesn't consider it's customers merely students with no choice in the purchase. I have only read the first 30 pages. I will review content when I'm done. Thanks Dave C.
It doesn't provide me much help in understanding this topic........1999-09-15
Initially I didn't have any understanding on ISO 9000 and looking for a reference. I purchased this book and realized that it didn't provide much in understanding the core of this topic. However, it does mention clearly the histroy and development of this quality standard.
A one stop ISO 9000 education!.......1998-07-03
Before reading this book I literally knew nothing about ISO 9000. The book takes you through the ISO process step by step from the history of ISO 9000 to registration. Robert Peach teaches you how to intergrate the ISO system into your various processes and create a quality management system.
A must read for all Management Representatives charged with implementing the ISO 9000 Quality Standard.

Description:
In this study, the feasibility of preparing effective adsorbents from unmitigated agroforestry wastes was investigated. Three different kinds of carbon-like materials were produced by low temperature pyrolysis (LTC,
<500^oC) of the raw materials rice husks, eucalyptus sawdust and peach stones. The carbon-like materials were characterized by instrumental methods (SEM,X-RDS,BET,MAS-RMN,FTIR), physico-chemical adsorption (iodine-, methylene blue- and phenazone-number; acetic acid adsorption isotherm; textile dyes- and carbohydrate adsorption), and heat value determination. The produced materials, which showed appreciable adsorption capacity, can be considered as precursors for the production of active coal or even be used directly as well.

This digital document is a journal article from Soil Biology and Biochemistry, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The effect of pre-inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on post-transplant growth of peach seedlings in replant and non-replant soils was studied for two successive seasons. Seedlings raised in sterile media and pre-inoculated with soil-based Gigaspora margarita inoculum were transplanted in replant and non-replant field soils alongside non-inoculated controls. Pre-inoculated seedlings transplanted in non-replant soils showed greater initial growth in the first year. Plant height, and lateral shoot length and number was highest in non-replant soils irrespective of mycorrhizal pre-inoculation. Similarly, biomass yield was significantly higher in seedlings in non-replant soils, though there were no significant differences in shoot/root ratios, and in tissue mineral content between and within treatments. Seedling infection by indigenous AMF was high in both replant and non-replant soils, and even non-inoculated seedlings recorded high infection levels after the first season. Generally, mycorrhizal activity was lower, and spore populations higher in replant soils, while the opposite was true in non-replant soils. It seems that soil sickness has a negative impact on plant metabolism and limits the capacity of the plant host to support the mycorrhizal symbiosis.
