5 out of 5 stars One of the best books.......2005-05-13

This is one of the best books for the introduction in Computer (Literacy, MIS, CS, IT, etc) and my choice textbook.

5 out of 5 stars ALL INCLUSIVE.......2005-03-31

Great if you know nothing about computers. Easy to read and understand.
Great as a refresher if you DO know something about computers, you may even learn something new

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for beginner - intermediate info sys overview.......2003-09-10

I have used and continue to use this textbook as the core text for a computer/info tech and society course I teach to community college students. The text is up-to-date (revised yearly), informative, well illustrated, and extremely well supported by the publisher through supplementary teaching, learning and testing materials and website support. My students are initially horified at the price but, as the semester continues, realize that it is actually a bargain and, by the end of the course, many have told me that they have found it to be a valuable addition to their personal library. I don't teach the textbook, I assign the chapters for weekly reading, test the students on the reading assignment at the beginning of class, then discuss the content and supplement it with other material which focuses on the history, development, use and consequences of information technologies. By assigning the chapters for reading and testing each week, I try to ensure that everyone is commonly prepared with the foundation knowledge required for further learning and discussion in class.

5 out of 5 stars Covers everything.......2003-07-06

Not a lot of depth in any one subject but a great overview. I'm using it to teach an Introduction to IT class to undergrad students.

Wrobleski and Hess offer a practical, yet comprehensive, approach and emphasize the law enforcement perspective as they examine the role of police in the criminal justice system. Another key strength of this book is that it has an easily accessible writing style and extensive pedagogy.

          5 out of 5 stars Ecclesiastes 2:1.......2003-02-15

In addition to having read this book, I have had the priviledge of being one of Dr. Abadinski's students.
Abadinski is not a professor that reads directly from the book, in fact he seldom opens it. As he talks on, you can almost follow word for word what is written in the book.

The book gives an excellent overview of the Judicial system. It covers the history of law and courts, gives a great description of types of legal systems in America and Europe, and has a great chapter on law schools. Some of Abadinski's experiences in the New York and Illinois court systems are apparent including the selection of judges in New York and his own dealing with the ACLU when he tried to publish a paper about the NY probation/parole department that would have resulted in an unfair termination.

I think that this is an excellent book for any criminal justice student, or anyone interested in the justice system in general. I entered his class as someone interested in attending a local law school in hopes of becomming a public defender. Afterwords, however, I have learned how utterly useless the justice system is. The figures show how less than %3 of cases ever go to trial.

Dr. Abadinski holds his Ph.D. from New York university as well as an MSW from Fordham university. He is a former parole officer.

          Book Description

This text presents a remarkable balance between the practical and theoretical. Dempsey brings his 25 years of policing experience (as a ranking officer in the New York Police Department) together with the best and most contemporary research to illustrate both the formal and the real workings of the policing system. By focusing on the controversies and the problems within the system, including the newest statistical data, Dempsey creates a uniquely objective text. No other text melds real experiences with high-quality research and statistics as well as Dempsey.

          5 out of 5 stars Disregard "navylady's" review.......2007-04-18

The previous review by navylady is of the 3rd edition of this book, and the reviewer makes some very good points about that edition. However, it should not be included here as a review of the 4th edition because all of her gripes about the text are limited to the 3rd edition and these issues are not present in the 4th edition of this text. I teach Introduction to Policing at the university level and I use this book. After looking at many other policing textbooks, I feel this is the most comprehensive and inclusive of all of them. It is a great text for any intro level policing class.

2 out of 5 stars This textbook stinks..........2006-08-06

This book is unorganized, out-of-date, too focused on New York City, and on every other page promotes the authors and their careers...On page 7 they are telling you how much has changed with the computer age, and the internet, and one of the authors tells you he went to grade school and they used quill pens and fountain jars...okay, I didn't need to know that. It was so annoying that by page 14, I was going to submit to them a list of improvements, but it would have been EXTENSIVE! From there on just gritted my teeth and got through it...Good luck! You'll be really tired of the references to the Trade City Bombing, and NYC in general, by the end of it!

          Book Description

Criminal Justice: An Introduction is a complete introductory text for the most basic and widely-studied course in this subject area. Each chapter begins with behavioral objectives and a list of key terms. A variety of strategies are designed into the text to hold the attention of reader: key terms in bold lettering, side margin notes (containing interesting facts and challenging questions), boxed justice events and international perspectives, and over 80 photographs, tables and figures. Each chapter ends with applications that enable the student to apply the material to real life situations.

This text competes with larger books by offering a complete but succinct and less expensive introduction to criminal justice, which will be more manageable for community colleges and colleges with shorter terms. The instructor's manual will assist educators with special projects and test questions and answers. The accompanying disk challenges students with interactive exercises.

An excellent entry-level textbook for undergraduate criminal justice students.
Written by an instructor of criminal justice and security for over 20 years.
Includes an instructor's manual and a disk with interactive exercises for students.

4 out of 5 stars Organized and easy to read.......2000-11-07

The book was written in distinct sections: 1)victims and their role in the criminal justice system, history and role of the 2)police, 3)courts and 4)probation, and 5)empolyment opportunities. The book is geared towards high level high school age students or college level. I am using it to teach a vocational education class in a high school. The students are 16 years or older. The book has up to date concepts, and fairly recent examples such as the Rodney King riots and the O.J. Simpson trial. In comparison to other books, this book is extremely reasonable and well worth the money.
