How To Obtain Business Loans: An Insider's Guide
Addison Parker Manufacturer: PT Publications Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0945456166 |
Book Description
Imposing pillars, pretentious marble floors, stuffy boardrooms and stifling bureaucracy...ah banking. In the wake of the S&L fiasco, regulation came down hard on the profession integral to our national economy. Commercial lending ground to a halt in the early '90s and Arthur Miller could have penned a sequel known as Death of a Businessman.Access to capital was forever changed by those events. Obtaining business loans in today's highly regulated environment requires special knowledge and skills previously unneeded.
Written by a banker, How To Obtain Business Loans is always humorous and frequently sarcastic. The author aims his wit at the funny (if it weren't so serious) manner in which banks study commercial credit applications. So, while you're being entertained, you'll garner the inside information required to get the business loans you need.
How To Obtain Business Loans is an education in the ways that banks are currently set up, how they operate in the prevailing environment, the way they look at you and how to get the most out of your relationship with them. Rephrased that's who you need to be talking to at the bank, what loans they are willing to do and under what conditions, what's important on your application for financing and how to get your loan approved.
The author has a special knack for making the industry's rules and regulations crystal clear. Blame is laid on a regulatory system which hurts the very individuals it is supposed to help - the small business people of this country. A group, by the way, that creates 80% of the jobs nationwide.
This book is not some macro-economic report on the current status of the economy. You'll hear what's actually happening in our financial institutions from a banker waste deep in regulation and bureaucracy. You'll come away with the knowledge of what really goes on in the boardroom, and how you must adjust to successfully obtain credit. You'll be getting the real story.
How To Obtain Business Loans is an expose like none ever written about the financial service industry. Its contents are highly controversial and thought provoking. In short, the book lets the public in on secrets bankers and government officials have kept close to those gray vests.
The details are given in short-story form, relating actual instances from the author's own experience as a bank officer. With that in mind (as you would expect) all the names and financial figures have been changed to protect the anonymity of the parties involved. Which is why the author was forced to use a pseudonym, so as not to call attention to the institutions that retained him. Readers should take special note that the occurrences/conditions recounted are indicative of all similar sized institutions. Which is to say regional sized banks where most of American business goes for financing.

Understand the enemy. He's not as smart as you think........1998-09-12
The auther utilizes a genial, anecdotal writing style that leads you through the loan and approval process by retelling his personal experiences. His stories teach without being dry or scholarly. There are no lectures here, no dogma, and no sermonizing. The author genuinely wants us to understand the industry so we can succeed.
Parkers' message is clear. Banks are large, highly structured, highly regulated institutions that are unable to handle, or comprehend, the entrepreneural world that they make their living from. If half of what he writes is true I'm surprised his sanity lasted long enough for him to escape.
Please buy this book and read it. You'll either learn a lot, laugh a lot, or groan at the incomprehensibiltiy of this system. I did all three.

From Slash-and-Burn to Replanting: Green Revolutions in the Indonesian Uplands (World Bank Regional and Sectoral Studies)
Manufacturer: World Bank Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821352059 |
Book Description
What are the alternatives to slash-and-burn in the Indonesian uplands? Based on fieldwork conducted in 1997 in some 40 small regions throughout Indonesia, as well as an extensive literature review, From Slash and Burn to Replanting, examines these alternatives.Economic and ecological changes in Indonesia, were critical during 1997 and 1998. The currency and economic crisis struck city dwellers, while El Nino and forest clearing had devastating effects on rural areas. However, Indonesian smallholders showed some ability to adapt to changes, both to the unexpected windfalls from lucky export crops in 1998 and the no-less unexpected plunge in 1999 and 2000.
From Slash and Burn to Replanting finds that farmers in the uplands are true entrepreneurs and innovators. If alternatives do exist, they have been mostly invented and implemented from `below', by farmers and middlemen, rather than by projects and governmental agencies.

Land and Schooling: Transferring Wealth across Generations (International Food Policy Research Institute)
Agnes R. Quisumbing , Jonna P. Estudillo , and Keijiro Otsuka Manufacturer: International Food Policy Research Institute ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 080187842X |
Book Description
In rural societies, passing down land and providing an education are the main ways parents assure the future welfare of their children. If, however, parents educate their sons and not their daughters and only sons inherit land, women will be worse off compared to men. Is the distribution of income and welfare between men and women changing? While many studies have documented that education of women is increasing in developing countries, evidence on changes in women's land rights is scarce. Knowing how men and women acquire land and human capital is the basis for determining the extent of this gender problem and how to solve it.
The authors of this book identify the factors affecting land inheritance and schooling across generations in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Ghana -- countries with very different social and cultural traditions. Based on household surveys at each site, the authors examine how these factors affect the distribution of income and spending in the household as a whole and among its individual members. They look at how these differences in land holdings and education affect what sons and daughters will earn over their lifetimes. To help right gender imbalances, the authors consider policies to encourage adoption of labor-intensive agricultural technologies, to extend and strengthen school systems in rural areas, to promote competition in off-farm labor markets, and to eliminate discrimination against women. The authors conclude that there is no conflict between policies to enhance the efficiency of investments in land and human capital and policies to promote gender equity.
The broad-based analysis will interest scholars in economics, anthropology, gender studies, sociology, and area studies.
