Simply Outdated.......2005-01-28

Sorry guys I know I should have wrote this one sooner. I went to a local bookstore here in Taipei and I bumped into someone who was buying this book. If only I could speak mandarin I would have told him that this book is simply OUTDATED because Cocoon has always been changing. It has never been, and may take a long time for it to be a full blown butterfly :)

The book is great. It taught me a lot of stuff. Let us just say buying this book is like buying a book with a title "Mastering Windows 95 in one month".

I am not going to preach on staying away as far as you can with Cocoon, not the book, even if it almost cost us our project but take a good, very good, look at the Table of Contents and see if the stuffs there are still supported by Cocoon. Or go to Cocoon website and decide on which stuff you would like to use (god bless you) and check if they are in this book.

If I am to rate this book regardless of whether or not its updated, I will give it 5 star or even 6. It's a great book for academic engagement ONLY.

A useful introduction to Cocoon.......2004-05-06

I'm using Cocoon, and i was looking for a good book to help me in developing XML based web sites.
I buyed this book and i'm really satisfied. It is simple and complete. The book follows a well defined learning path. Some chapters, which analyzes advanced features in Cocoon(like SOAP, Internazionalization, ...), are extremely useful.

Pretty Darn Good.......2004-04-01

I normaly spend my time cringing at the writing of computer science authors. This book is fairly straight forward. It skips a beat here and there, but not so much that it stops one dead in the tracks. It is an exhaustive read and only on the basics. I thought that more depth is eventually needed when Cocoon gets finalized, but this is about as good as it gets right now.

Difficult made simple.......2004-03-08

I bought the book Friday, started to read it that day (after work), continued the reading Saturday, and by Sunday evening I had ported almost the whole website for my workplace from Struts to Cocoon!

The book transforms a very complex subject to a comprehensible level, to the point that you will be Cocooning just after a few days like an expert!

My advice: GET THE BOOK!

In Irrational Markets and the Illusion of Prosperity, author Don DeVitto makes a VERY COMPELLING argument why Americans are experiencing one of the greatest speculative eras in recorded history. DeVitto combines his extensive knowledge of historical periods of severe speculation, in particular the 1920s in America and the 1980s in Japan,with almost 20 years of working "on the front lines" with individual investors, to draw a very insightful, yet sobering picture.

DeVitto writes: "Investors are now looking back at the reality of the last decade rather than forward to the risks that lie ahead." He argues quite convincingly that "the deflationary risks in today's global economy are more pronounced than at any time since the 1930's."

DeVitto reveals that our passion for stocks, combined with an ever-increasing debt burden at both the individual and corporate level, have left our nation with little wiggle room should we experience a recession of any lasting duration. He argues that as the "wealth effect" begins to evaporate,the confidence or psychology of most investors will erode,and, as consumers, will quickly discover that both their capacity and desire to buy goods and services have diminished markedly.Given that consumers represent 2/3 of the economy, it doesn't take a nuclear scientist to figure out what can happen to corporate earnings, which, ultimately, are a stock's only lifeboat.

DeVitto writes in plain english and incorprates his graphs in a very user-friendly way, making the book accessible to all readers. Irrational Markets is a very smooth read, and at under 200 pages can be incorporated into even the busiest of schedules.

Despite the fact the NASDAQ is currently 50% off its highs reached in March of 2000, this book is no less timely. In fact, should some of the concerns raised by DeVitto become a reality, most Americans will be elated to return to their February 2001 account values.

DeVitto's book is A MUST READ for any equity investor, especially bullish investors like myself who have embraced technology stocks with the same passion a 16 year-old boy embraces his prom date. I'm confident readers will find this book well worth their time and the investment (the price of the book and a bottle of TUMS)as it will serve as a much needed yield sign through the frenetic intersection of Equity Street and Net Worth Avenue, Pamplona, USA.

The establishment of Intellectual Property Rights is of utmost importance for the functioning of the market mechanism in a modern economy based more and more on trade in services and software products. Most Central and Eastern European Countries already dispose on systems of Intellectual Property Rights protection. The law enforcement mechanism in a series of countries, however, must still be strengthened. In one section of the book, the authors give an overview on the institutionalisation of Intellectual Property Rights in Central and Eastern Europe and in some successor states of the former Soviet Union with special regard to Russia. If you are doing a Phd dissertation on the topic of licensing intellectual property, this could be the right book for you. If you are looking for a practical, day-to-day overview of these concepts and how to leverage IP assets for your business, I would not recommend this book. I'm still looking!

Good general information for keeping dart frogs.......2000-09-19

This book has few pictures but good coverage on care for each type of frog. The author spends two chapters describing his expeditions to Panama and Fr. Guiana. He BRIEFLY discusses how to build and outfit a terrarium (vivarium), diseases and breeding. The last half of the book discusses each species individually. He gives a description, outlines distribution-habitat in the wild, lists optimum temperature and vivarium size, and gives detailed information on their breeding habits and care of tads. I would have liked more focus on caring for the frogs and less on breeding them and seeing them in the wild. Otherwise, good reference book.

poison arrow frogs.......2000-06-19

I have read several books on dart frogs and the set-up of this is ideal for an intermediate frog owner as well as the beginner. Branching off sections on: genus, species, general care, food, temp. setting, cage set-up, and difficulty of captive care; you should be more than ready to start your first set-up( of course only with the suggested beginning frogs) or continue your knowledge of these beautiful creatures. I keep frogs myself and feel this book would be wise to read if you plan to care for any poison frog as long as their life span should be.

This book is great for beginners, covering natural history, terrarium construction, live food culture and individual species requirements. The very nice photographs make it a wish list for frog keepers.

The section on montiors and tegus is REALLY insufficient. He discusses only the Nile and Water monitors, but there are some 12 or 13 species available. In fact, he tries to dissuade you from owning a monitor, when they are great animals if you know what your doing. The section on venomous snakes was rather lacking, but that is the norm. Also, some of the information was somewhat dated, but nothing major enough to cause real concern. HE got the diets, temps. and other basics for most of the species. However, the amphibian section wasn't all that great. It didn't cover frogs now avialable, and the care was too bare, sometimes not including temperatures or other essentials. This book can be helpful if you've got no knowledge, but youre still much better off buying a more specific book (i.e one that covers just lizards, or just snakes). His reach exceeded his grasp here. But, it can help, and has a few good spots. I reccomend buying it, but don't rely on it as the best care source out there.

It is a must buy for beginners. It contains a shallow overview of many species. While it does not go into too much depth on any one species, it does give the absolute bare bones for most- cage size, temps, diet, ect. The section an montiros and teiieds is very lacking though. He seems to think that the average hobbyist should even consider these aniamls. That is the books one really big flaw.

Desperately seeking amphibs..........1999-04-22

This was a great, informative book. No complaints about the information that it held.... however, I was specifically seeking information about amphibians. In view of this, I have to say I was disappointed in the small amount of info i could find on my amphibs. I'd say it was 75-80% reptile info... disappointing especially when it wasn't a large book to begin with. Reptile owners: Buy this book! Amphibian owners: find an amphibian book.

Seems uninformed about its own subject matter.......2001-08-18

It's hard to say whether this book merely reflects the state of knowledge about the care of garter snakes in captivity at that time it was published (1992) or whether the author simply didn't know his subject matter. Perhaps a little of both.

Like several other authors, Sweeney makes the mistake of associating vitamin B1 deficiencies with frozen fish -- in fact, only some fish contain the thiaminase enzyme that causes it, and they do so whether they're alive or frozen. But he also makes several other mistakes about certain species. For example, he says that Butler's garter snakes have a wide diet in the wild (no) and are picky feeders in captivity (not in my experience!), and that western ribbon snakes include earthworms in their diet (they don't). Nor is any mention made of the cannibalistic tendencies of the western terrestrial garter snake, an omission that could lead to a big surprise for keepers who house a pair together!

Short concise and informative........1998-11-07

This book was very easy to read and had a ton of helpful and practical tips. It takes you through housing, feeding, breeding and also helps to identify some common newts. For such a short book there is a great deal of usable information. I was especially pleased with all the color photos.
