    Book Description

Relating the blues to American social and literary history and to Afro-American expressive culture, Houston A. Baker, Jr., offers the basis for a broader study of American culture at its "vernacular" level. He shows how the "blues voice" and its economic undertones are both central to the American narrative and characteristic of the Afro-American way of telling it.

Although the book is apparently out of print, if you find it used, at a reasonable price, buy it! Serious students of astrology will find the book a great help in grasping house concepts. Electional and Horary astrologers will find it an indispensible reference.

          Book Description

Keywords are crucial for effective astrological work. They correctly translate astrological symbols into clear, everyday language -- which is an astrologer's never-ending pursuit.

The Astrological Thesaurus, Book 1: House Keywords is the first easy-to-use reference book and textbook on the houses, their rich psychological meanings, and their keywords. Astrologer Michael Munkasey compiled almost 14,000 keywords from more than 600 sources over a 230year period. He has organized them into 17 commonplace categories (e.g., things, occupations and psychological qualities), and cross-referenced them three ways for ease of use: alphabetically, by house, and by category.

In addition, this book also provides information on astrological quadrants and hemispheres, how to choose a house system, and the mathematical formulations of for many described house systems.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding instructional book on installing and using qmail.......2006-02-08

My first edition copy of this book is dog-eared and full of bookmarks. This is an excellent tutorial on installing and using qmail. It includes step-by-step instructions for each task involved in setting up and administering (as well as customizing) qmail. Great text. Highly recommended. You don't need to be a Linux expert to install qmail if you follow this guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter book for anyone.......2004-07-05

Dave Sill did an excellent job of showing how to setup email server. If you know some Linux commands, you'll have no problem setup your first Linux email server. I personally prefer Dave's Qmail handbook to John Levine's Qmail (I got as well). Levine's Qmail is an great second book.

5 out of 5 stars Qmail made much easier with this book.......2002-10-11

After a month, and hours of installing and reinstalling FreeBSD and Qmail, I finally got the mail server working right! This was my first attempt at a mail server which I use for my family members and a few friends. There are a few errors in the book in some of the scripts which did cause me many problems. That was a pain. But, even at that, I don't think I would have been able to get Qmail running without this book. It is a great book for a person like me who is always doing something a bit over my head.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-05-03

Everything you need to know about Qmail from installation and complete configuration. There is no other book.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2002-02-27

I just finished setting up a mail server at home and this book really made it simple. I'm not a novice, so I can't speak to it's ease of use, but the steps were simple, and a bit verbose and repetitive, but overall the book was invaluable.

I also needed DNS and BIND to get everything working just the way I wanted, so I'd buy them both.

                          Book Description

qmail has quietly become one of the most widely used applications on the Internet today. It's powerful enough to handle mail for systems with millions of users--Like Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail, while remaining compact and manageable enough for the smallest Unix- and Linux-based PC systems. Its component design makes it easy to extend and customize while keeping its key functions secure, so it's no wonder that adoption of qmail continues at a rapid pace. The downside? Apparently none. Except that qmail's unique design can be disorienting to those familiar with other popular MTAs (Mail Transfer Agents). If you're coming from sendmail, for instance, you might have trouble recasting your problems and solutions in qmail terms. qmail first helps you establish a "qmail frame of mind," then explores the installation, configuration, administration, and extension of this powerful MTA. Whether you're installing from scratch or managing mailing lists with thousands of users, qmail provides detailed information about how to make qmail do precisely what you want qmail concentrates on common tasks like moving a sendmail setup to qmail, or setting up a "POP toaster," a system that provides mail service to a large number of users on other computers sending and retrieving mail remotely. The book also fills crucial gaps in existing documentation, detailing exactly what the core qmail software does. Topics covered include: If you need to manage mailing lists, large volumes of mail, or simply find sendmail and other MTAs too complicated, qmail may be exactly what's called for. Our new guide, qmail, will provide the guidance you need to build an email infrastructure that performs well, makes sense, and is easy to maintain.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative and complete - everything you need for qmail.......2004-06-17

Although sendmail is installed in more Internet mail servers than any other Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) it has come under scrutiny for being a large awkward program by today's standards. More and more new MTA servers are moving to a modular program like qmail that has a multitude of smaller programs for each function instead of one huge program that does everything. This allows for greater speed and flexibility. John R. Levine's new book "qmail: Managing Unix-Based Mail Systems" examines the qmail program in depth from installation to configuration to troubleshooting. While qmail is fairly straightforward and you can achieve great results on both small and very large systems, it is a very different way of thinking if you are moving from sendmail and are already familiar with it. The author recognizes this difficulty of changing the way you think and spends a good portion of the beginning of the book detailing qmail and how it works so you understand the "qmail frame of mind". I've never setup a sendmail server and so I did not have the obstacle to overcome but I have setup and configured the postfix MTA which is also a modular type program. With that background the book was a breeze to follow along and I was even able to download a copy and configure it correctly for my system. The coverage was excellent and the installation and configuration information provided all the information I needed to get it up and running. If you are thinking of building a qmail MTA you will find "qmail: Managing Unix-Based Mail Systems" absolutely indispensable and the only reference you need to get it done right the first time.

5 out of 5 stars The handbook that is long, long overdue..........2004-04-11

For years, any system administrator running Linux who was worth his paycheck knew that Qmail was the defacto standard for running a mail server (heck, even Yahoo uses it!). Sendmail has always been ripe with security holes and headaches -- something Qmail has went to great lengths to correct. However, the problem has always been there was no easy reference guide to Qmail. You had to be either a Linux-geek, or know someone who was, to get it installed and working correctly!

Now, thanks to O'Reilly, even us non-geeks can get our Qmail systems up and running in no time. This book covers everything you need to know in an easy-to-follow format. From installation, to making the switch from sendmail, even how to tune and setup third-party components with Qmail to help control spam, scan for viruses and run your own mailing list server.

One of the great things about this book is it, for the most part, is not dependent on any particular flavor of Linux. The author does a good job of making it generic enough that you can follow along no matter what distribution you use.

Granted, you will need to know a bit about Linux to use read and fully understand this book. It is geared towards system admistrators and not the end-user of a Qmail system. However, you don't need to be a Linux Guru to understand it -- it has just enough detail to satisfy without overwhelming.

Overall, this is the handbook for Qmail that has been long overdue -- a one-stop technical manual that puts the final touch on Qmail.

                          Book Description

Running qmail will enable you to install and operate an Internet email server on your local network without having to buy an expensive commercial email system and pay for user licenses. This book includes on CD the qmail email software package, which is in wide use on the Internet without any books documenting how to install, configure, and operate the email server effectively. There are step-by-step examples detailing the installation and configuration of qmail along with reference based chapters pertaining to qmail features. The FreeBSD operating system will be utilized to demonstrate concepts throughout the book. After reading this book, network administrators will possess a good understanding of how email is transferred between email hosts and clients in the Internet environment. You will also possess knowledge of how to use the qmail email software package in a standard Unix/Linux environment.

Most of the stuff you really want to know about qmail is not found in this book. A typical installation is not discussed. You'd be much better off at the qmail.org web site.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for learning qmail.......2002-01-28

If spending your whole career devoted to configuring Sendmail doesn't excite you, try qmail. It is a good email server and is much easier to work with.

This book is a good place to start if you decide to go with qmail. It is pretty easy to read and while it probably doesn't tell you everything you'll want to know, it will help you get your email server up and running while you are still young.

1 out of 5 stars Functional, but frowned upon.......2002-01-23

While this book will help you get a functional qmail installation, it does so in a way the qmail community frowns upon. A much better guide to setting up qmail is LWQ (Life With Qmail) avaible freely on the web. The author of LWQ has also written a more comprehensive guide call the "qmail Handbook".

In short if you're looking for help with how to set up and administer qmail, this is NOT the guide to follow.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-11-02

Don't listen to the nay sayers, this is a good book. It contains all you'll need to know to get qmail installed and running. After reading the first eight chapters I was easily able to get qmail working. This was a big improvement over all the false starts and dead ends from attempting to follow the Internet qmail how-to articles. The author also educates about many of the things that e-mail delivery relies on such as DNS and PPP for dial-up. This book is money well spent if you need to build a qmail server.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great..........2001-09-16

I thought this provided only basic instruction with regard to qmail. I wanted a book with specifics enough to do advanced mail forwarding and other options that I know qmail is capable of doing. I didn't find the necessary information in this book and had to dig it out on the net myself. The book was detailed in only a few areas. I give it an average rating.

                            Book Description

This book is a quick starter for people wanting to set up a mail server using qmail, a secure, reliable, efficient, simple message transfer agent. Designed for internet-connected UNIX hosts, qmail is the second most common SMTP server on the Internet, and has by far the fastest growth of any SMTP server. Its straight-paper-path philosophy guarantees that a message accepted into the system will never be lost. It also supports maildir, a new, super-reliable user mailbox format. Targeted at System Administrators who need to set up qmail, this book gives practical examples ready for immediate use, but also explains the basics behind each example. Starting with setting up a qmail server, it takes the reader through virtualization, filtering, and advanced features like hosting multiple domains, mailing lists, and SSL Encryption. Finally, it discusses the log files and how to make qmail work faster. Author Kyle Wheeler has been setting up and maintaining qmail-based email servers since 2000.
