Customer Reviews:
Not just Beginning.......2007-04-07
The title should be shortened to just "Relational Data Modeling", as it covers beginner level material, and some advanced topics as well. Some of the concepts presented within are directly applicable in the leading (and expensive) commercial E/R modeling tools.
Excellant Data Modeling Coverage........2007-02-01
Im new to the Data Model and this book helps me to get started.Obviously they covered many areas and in overall examples are pretty good.
Just one complain on the Analysis they took Playing card example which for me tedious I would prefer simple example .Not everyone are expert in Card games.
Fantastic introduction to practical data modeling.......2005-05-02
I'm really happy with this book. We have needed a practical text on data modeling for some time. The other works have been largely academic. In this book the authors use real world examples to work through the material,
Graphics are used extensively through the book. But that makes sense for the topic. The graphics are a combination of UML and relational diagrams. The tone of the text is jocular and down to earth.
This is an ideal walkthrough for engineers who have some experience using databases but now want to understand how to design databases well.
A must read if you work with data!.......2005-04-28
I've been a database programmer for 15 years but I've never kept up with the "latest" database concepts. Reading Beginning Relational Data Modeling was a great way to get myself up to date! I never learned about conceptual and logical models. So this book was a real eye-opener!
It starts out with a great introduction which includes data normalization. Every developer that works with data should know what the first three are. Apparently there has been another one added called Boyce-Codd Normal Form (BCNF). This one was new to me and I thought it was explained very well.
I thought the book was very informational. I think every developer that works with data should read this book to bring themselves up to data on the latest data modeling concepts.
learn to make conceptual models.......2005-04-17
While the book calls itself "Beginning", it actually takes you a long way into understanding and making a relational model. The authors heavily downplay the formal maths aspect. No predicate calculus and no proving of theorems. Of necessity, the Normal Forms are explained, including the contributions of Boyce and Codd to this development. Simple relational tables are used for illustration. This topic lends itself easily to diagrams of interrelated data sets held in tables. Which is probably more visually understandable anyway.
Perhaps the most important chapter is on making a conceptual model of your system or problem. In a top down approach, you start here. And it can be rather intangible until you build up expertise. Subsequent chapters show how to parlay the conceptual model into a logical model and then into a physical model. Important steps, to be sure, but secondary. Focus on the essentials.

Excellent FM handbook for 2001 and beyond.......2001-05-07
A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. There are lots of graphics/figures which help readability of this thick book, as well as a CD with websites and templates for RFP's, standards and process related functions.

Customer Reviews:
I recommend !.......2007-05-14
It is a very practical guide for handy information. It is quite usefull for my daily work needs.
Useful overview, but not perfect.......2001-06-14
I'm not a CFA candidate, but I've been an investor for years and always appreciate learning more about the field. My father was president of the CFA for a couple of years, and after 15 years working on Wall Street I have a reasonably broad understanding of some finance.
What impressed me most about the book was how short and terse the definitions were. Clearly they are useful and present good insight into what's important and why.
What impressed me least was the lack of mathematical rigour (perhaps one can't have both brievity and exactness?). For example, many of the formulas only work for specific instances, and details about yield/rate conventions are omitted.
Overall, it struck me as useful overview and quick reminder to financial analysis and the language/terms used. It's not really indispensable, and is not authoritative. But for a quick refresher, or ballpark estimates it's fine.
A great book for those studying or who've completed the CFA.......2001-05-13
This is the only book of its kind, so far. The author compiled this pocket guide after completing his CFA program and realising that the vast concepts, terms and designations learnt were soon being forgotten.
That being the case, candidates of, as well as those who have completed, the CFA program would find this book a useful one-stop guide to all those concepts, terms and designations learnt in the pursuit of the CFA designation.
The book is arranged broadly around the various topics of the CFA program i.e. Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statements Analysis, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Real Estate, Portfolio Management, Ethics, Behavioural Finance. As such, the CFA candidate would find this book more useful than say, a general finance/business masters student.
But I reckon that this book, though published as recent as this year, is already in need of an update. The CFA syllabus is constantly evolving. As a result, a number of concepts in say, Level 1 of the CFA Program, are not found in this book. Also, a number of the textbooks used in the CFA program which the author had based his book on, have either been superseded by newer editions or replaced all together.
All in all, I found this to be a useful book and a unique concept. Until a better book comes along, I will be using this book religiously to prepare for the CFA exams as well as to refresh my memory.
Good starting point.......2001-04-02
As a CFA candidate, I find this to be a useful summary of the key concepts that we are taught during the course of the programme. However, regard it as more of a "Cliff's Notes" of the programme -- with all its inevitable shortcomings -- but a handy little reference piece nonetheless. After completion of the programme and years down the road, I am sure that I will find it quite useful in helping to jog my memory and the sleepless nights that the CFA programme gave me! -- I hope, however, that a revised version will be introduced and perhaps with a less odd title. It is not a book for everyone, but anyone who wishes that s/he had made notes whilst studying for the CFA programme will find this book useful.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely lacking, but OK for traditional mortgage products.......2007-03-27
I have to say that Fabozzi has the formula down pat--he gets "guest writers" to contribute various chapters to this book and does very little writing himself. The result is a disjointed, sometimes repetitious, other times incomplete volume. This book focuses extensively on agency mortgages--Ginnies, Fannies, Freddies--and speaks only a bit to the Alt-A, subprime and more exotic privately-originated mortgage markets. To call this book comprehensive would be a lie. Although this book was highly recommended to me by a PM at a traditional long-only manager, I can only guess that previous versions were better, because this one was certainly a high-priced primer that still left many areas of the market uncovered. Areas that are glaringly missing (beyond non-agency topics) include the role of hedge funds, loss mitigation/foreclosure processes, more info on EPDs, and the erosion of lending standards/rise of the subprime market. I think that a chapter on common mortgage origination fraud issues is also merited.
This book is good for the basics, on agencies. Beyond that, it may leave you scratching your head and wondering, "And...." because there is a palpable sense of incompletion. Borrow this book from someone else that already has it--don't buy it!
Good book.......2007-01-26
If youre in the MBS business, you gotta have this as a reference book if nothing else. Its the industry standard. Item showed up brand new and good delivery.
Excellent but Compiled Work.......2003-02-15
I have seven years of experience selling these products, and I use Fabozzi's book often. This is a good reference, and a good treatment of mortgage and asset backed securities. I only gave it four stars because the fact that this is a compiled work of research material interrupts the flow of ideas. On the other hand, there is some merit to getting different angles on the subject from different viewpoints.
One caveat. Mortgage derivatives used to mean calls and puts on mortgage backed securities. Today, however, entire portfolios of mortgage risk are laid off in the form of credit derivatives.
Tavakoli has the best treatment of that topic in the book: "Credit Derivatives".
A major reference.......2000-08-02
A vast collection of articles by practitioners on Wall Street, this book covers a broad number of topics on Mortgage Backed Securities. While not a scholarly approach, 'street research' typically aims to educate the fixed income portfolio manager.
Fabozzi handbooks are overrated.......2000-06-28
It's the industry standard. Everyone has one. It stands alone in its field. And if you're reading this you're probably going to buy regardless of what is written here.
But I've found this book (along with some of the other Fabozzi 'Handbooks') to be overrated. Basically, the format of 30 or so different authors each writing a chapter in the form of an article diminishes the usefulness of the book. There is no narrative, pedagogical or otherwise. The format leads to significant gaps in coverage. The quality of the chapters is uneven, as is the level of detail covered.
Don't misunderstand me -- the Handbook isn't bad, by any strecth of the imagination. It's just not as good as it could be. It has almost no fluff, and all the information in it is good. And the competition is a very slim field. For many things Fabozzi is not only your best choice, it's your only one.

Book Description
This remarkable new book scrutinizes the rationale and enforcement of the continuing United Nations sanctions in Iraq-a program widely criticized for imposing misery on an entire population in a fruitless attempt to humble a cynical tyrant. It is the first book-length study ever undertaken of the functioning of a Security Council sanctions committee.
