This book covers the history of radio and tv well, but it really isn't too current with some of the new broadcasting standards and new research methods going on.

Covers the Subject Well.......2004-02-10

Among the historical aspects of broadcasting covered are: development, technology, economics, programming, impact, regulation, and international aspects. The book's beginning tells us that broadcasting has consequences and that theme runs through the text. We're given clear definitions of the key terms used by media professionals and a historical context of their development.

Appropriate charts, graphs, and photos add an element of visual explanation to accompany the written descriptions. The sections on regulation and audience research emphasize the importance of those two components for students interested in entering the field. This book is a good introduction to the industry's founding and place in American culture.

Standard Intro to TV and Radio Text Book.......2000-01-10

This is a popular text for your basic college TV and Radio intro class. I have used it for several years myself and it's a fine overview of the subject. Gets pretty technical on electronic stuff and has less on broadcast history and personalities (in my view). Also, since the death of one author the book has become more dated each year and will continue to do so unless they do a fairly significant rewrite.

It's time is past!!.......2007-07-09

Well its been on my shelf for a couple years and how I've opened it. I am on page 165 and back to Amazon to search for a book to replace it.
The book is outdated. The forum for the book is not well visited. The support code for the book is failing images and some files. The code is written inconsistantly, different authors, and there is no mention of this or proper coding examples. Variables are created on the fly and creates some error messages with uptodate PHP. The explanations of certain things requires several readings sometimes to fill in blanks that a beginner should have explained. The use of CSS is not even mentioned so far and the html does not meet Xhtml standards. We must not forget the book was copyrighted in 2004.

I have purchased "Beginning PHP and MySQL 5" by Jason Gilmore and it seems to be a resonable book but leans more towards a reference text. The search continues...

This book was written by functional illiterates.......2007-06-29

The authors are great PHP programmers, I have no doubt, but terrible writers. I do not recommend this book. Like most bad technical writers, they make a big production about trivial concepts, then gloss over difficult concepts without explaining them in detail.

A Truly Excellent Book for the "Beginner".......2006-07-15

This book is really quite good. It's very interesting & definitely very readable. When I read it, I got straight down to business, so to speak. It gives very practical examples starting you off with making a movie review site which was very interesting! All in all, an excellent book to give you a working knowledge of PHP & MySQL.

That said, there are some shortcomings.

-Significant amount of typos in the code
-Some minor parts of the code requires redoing (which I found out through a forum dedicated for the book)
-For those of you with absolutely no experience in programming, you might find some concepts aren't covered enough in detail

As I said before, overall, great book.

-ive 1 star for the shortcomings.

Solid coverage of beginning topics.......2005-10-14

I used this book as a tutorial on the subject with graduate students who had only basic programming experience and we all agreed that it was a great way to get started with database-backed PHP work.

Not Worth One Star.......2005-04-11

Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES". To many typo's and script errors which did not work!

Actually I would give the book a 5 star rating if they changed the name to Trouble Shooting Script Errors, Test Your Skills!

Very out-of-date now.......2007-07-13

This is a decent book, but the MySQL syntax is very out-of-date. If you're working with a current version of MySQL, this isn't going to do you any favors. Until they see fit to update this volume, I recommend buying something else.

I've had great luck with "PHP, MySQL and Apache" by Julie C. Meloni (Sams Teach Yourself) third edition (2007). Its example projects are different and not quite as applicable to what I'm needing to do, but who knows - they may be just what you need. The biggest benefit is that it uses the mysqli commands that PHP 5.xx demands.

Good but need update.......2007-07-04

For a novice in these 3 fields, it's a good introductory and step-by-step guide to get familiar with them.
However, since the book was first published in 2005, many contents about installations are outdated. An update in these parts will benefit new readers because it can help them get into the main topics easier.

Great book for those, like me, who wants to start from zero with PHP5 and MySQL. I had no previous knowledge about this two languages, and in short time began to understand about it all. You may buy this book for sure!

A good book for windows users.......2006-08-24

I bought this book a couple of days ago after reading the cover (Bad Jon, never judge a book by its cover) and learning that it teaches you in both Windows and Linux. This is not the case. I am still in chapter one trying to configure Mysql under Linux. There is very basic linux setup configuration and then the book just assumes Windows is what you will use. I am retiring this book and picking up another.

Accurate and easy to understand, but ineffective.......2006-06-15

I almost gave it two stars, but that wouldn't quite be fair. The book is written in a comfortable, informal tone and is easy to understand. It is well edited. The trouble is that it, like many programming books, doesn't TEACH YOU THE LANGUAGE. To use metaphor, it teaches you how to say, "Where's the bathroom" in PHP, but not what "Where's," "the" and "bathroom" mean and how to use them in other sentences. It uses the tools of PHP to make a jig for you to perform one very specific task, but it doesn't give you the tools.

Put directly, this book gives you complete code for a specific task and then loosely explains what the code does IN THAT CONTEXT. I want a book that teaches me the specifics of the function and syntax of various commands, allows me to use them to solve problems on my own, and THEN talks about broader programming techniques.
