"The definitive guide to musical enjoyment" (Forum) with over 1.5 million copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
what to listen for in CLASSICAL music.......2007-08-20
On the back of my copy, it says "the best book of its kind I have ever seen - deems taylor"
I don't know if the latest edition still says that, but it's important to know what KIND of book this is. It was written in 1939, and its chapter on "Contemporary Music" is about composers who died long ago.
It's not exactly a "complete idiot's guide" to the subject of what goes on with classical music, but it's close.
Despite its age, it really is beautifully written and contains loads of good information about listening to classical music.
Easily Worth the Price and Well Worth the Effort.......2007-08-05
Not easy to read but the easiest, useful book on the subject. Revisions excellent.
A great look at music through a great composers eyes!.......2007-05-05
This is a wonderful book on music appreciation that is accessible to everyone. I first read it many years ago and found that it many layers making it applicable to what I knew at the time and even more relevant as I've gotten older.
I played music professionally for 11 years and I have a deep understanding of music theory. I have also given some lessons on various instruments over the years and appreciate classical music greatly. This book was probably the first book that opened my eyes to classical music and helped me to appreciate it much more.
Many other people have reviewed this book and their words have captured much of my sentiments. Suffice it to say that this work is a gem and an added bonus is that it presents its topic through the eyes of a composer, a man who loved music and fortunately could convey his feelings and orientation to his art beautifully in words.
Thanks Mr. Copland. My life is indeed better for having found this book early in life when I was beginning my musical journey.
Eternal Message.......2007-01-12
Aaron Copland gives you an insight into the form and structure of music and how one should be listening to music. If you love music or have a passion for it whether as a musician or listener this book is invaluable. Invaluable is a strong word but I do not know how else to express the appreciation and rewards gathered by the reader from Copland's writings. It transcends all types of music making it universally adaptable for what one would hope to gain by reading it. The text is old but the message is eternal.
A great introductory guide from a leading expert.......2006-11-29
It was great to finally get around to reading this book. Aaron Copland is perhaps the foremost American composer in the 20th century, and is often credited for developing a distinctly "American" classical sound. While he is certainly capable of writing esoteric treatises on music, this volume is really much more oriented towards the general reader.
In his book, Copland provides in essence an entire music appreciation course. He discusses the seven aspects of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, timbre, rhythm/meter, and form), illustrating them and explaining their individual contributions towards musical quality. The opening chapters address the many levels on which we listen, which is one of the fundamental challenges facing classical music today. Most of us are used to listening to music on a superficial, aesthetic level. Great classical music, however, is not only pleasing on that level, but also has qualities which are more substantial.
Copland includes listening examples at the end of each chapter so that students can easily recognize the aspects which Copland is attempting to describe. With tools like iTunes and Napster, this can now be done much more easily.
Leonard Bernstein's The Joy of Music travels along similar lines as this book. Those who like Copland's volume may enjoy Bernstein, but Lenny's writings are more intellectual and can be drier, at times. I would certainly recommend Copland's book to anyone who wants to become more interested in Western classical music. With the right kind of supplemental materials (histories on various composers), it could even be used as a college/high school textbook. Enjoy it!

It hit the right note for me.......2001-02-16
I found this book useful as a homeschooling mother attempting to expose my children to classical music and make sense, for myself, of a wide world for which I haven't (up till now) been able to find a decent map. I had eight years (years ago) of piano lessons, very little listening experience during the time I took them, and definitely nobody ever sat down and said things like "listen how the piano comes in here, plays for a few bars, and then you expect it to break into the second major theme of this piece--but Mozart plays a little joke here, he starts out playing it in such-and-such a minor key which isn't really substantial enough to go on for too long, so then he gets down to business and changes it back into a major key." (I'm paraphrasing Harris here.) Could I say I've been listening-challenged most of my life and I really do need someone to spoon-feed me with some of those details? Mozart, for me, was nice to listen to and got me through eight hours of labour, but I've never seen one of his concertos written out blow-by-blow.
I also like this book as an introduction to listening to classical music in general. What to listen for, as the title says. Why on earth this concerto is supposed to be better than that one. Why Mozart decided to do this for twenty bars instead of something completely different. I liked Harris's comment that the Piano Concerto #21 would give you--if you listen carefully enough--enough listening for a whole lifetime. (The same idea as being able to read Jane Austen repeatedly and enjoy her books more each time even though you already know what happens.)
Maybe some *would* find Harris's descriptions either overly technical (I didn't think so, though I do know some terminology from music theory, like "dominant" and "tonic" which does help with what he's saying) or patronizing (if you naturally know how to listen to what he's doing) as the review says. However, for me (as the mom and rather ignorant "teacher" here), he seemed to hit the right note.
P.S. I think the Kirkus Review should have said Harris worked for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), not for CBS.

ASIN: 0300072597 |
Book Description
This new book from the editor of The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz offers a unique way of approaching and understanding jazz. Drawing on twenty-one historic jazz recordings, reproduced on a compact disc that accompanies the book, Barry Kernfeld illustrates jazz rhythm, forms, arrangement, composition, improvisation, style, and sound.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction.......2001-12-07
Mr Kernfield is definitely an authority on jazz. I also own the "New grove Dictionary of Jazz", which he edited. "What to listen for in jazz" is well-written, though it can be hard going if you're not familiar with all the musical jargon.
The book is accompanied by a CD containing a rich selection of songs, covering many decades and many styles. Unfortuantely, some songs are excerpts (for example John Coltrane's Ascension). Excerpts of the notation of the songs are printed in the book. For example, I found enough about Weather Report's Birdland to understand the structure of the song well enough for my purposes.
I also found the book to be well organised. The chapters cover rhythm, forms, arrangement, composition, improvisation, sound and style. The appendices feature a discography and biographical sketches of some musicians, and there is also a good index.
If you read this book along with Aaron Copland's "What to listen for in music, you will not only learn heaps more about music, but you will enjoy your music heaps more.
interesting but flawed in format.......2000-07-15
There is some valuable stuff in Kernfeld's book; I enjoyed particularly the section on the historical evolution of jazz styles. Kernfeld obviously knows his subject well. However, I found his organization lacking. Including a CD with selections by jazz greats to illustrate his points was a fine idea; but the text should have been divided up so that the cuts on the CD could be listened to in conjunction with full text descriptions in the same order -- something about the personnel playing, why the cut is significant historically, and comments on what we're listening to. Instead, Kernfeld scatters the references to the different tracks throughout the text and this makes it much more laborious for the listener/reader. My second gripe is with the idiot at the publishing house (I presume it wasn't Kernfeld) who thought it would be cute to use a tiny (maybe ten point) pseudo-artsy type face for the entire text. Come on folks -- not every book has to be set in Times Roman, but this isn't even remotely a book face. It gave me a headache after three pages.
Well-written and practical.......2000-02-11
If, like me, you know a little about Jazz (but not much), and you're looking for a way to broaden your knowledge, this is the book you want.
Kernfeld focuses on the basics. He uses 22 landmark recordings (provided on the accompanying CD)to illustrate the points he makes. The six chapters of the book deal with rhythm, forms, arrangement, composition, improvisation and sound. In the course of reading the book, you revisit the same composition several times, each time focusing on a different excerpt from it. When Kernfeld talks about backbeats, syncopation and blue notes, he explains what he means!
This book is a must-have! (A useful accompaniment to this book -though not essential- is "How to read music" by Terry Burrows, another book/cd combination.)
Note: The accompanying CD features tracks by Miles Davis ('round midnight), Billy Holiday ( georgia on my mind), Louis Armstrong (hotter than that), Duke Ellington (ko-ko, trumpet no end), Jelly Roll Morton (black bottom stomp) and Thelonious Monk (misterioso). Others on the cd include Dizzy Gillespie, Weather report, Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, Coleman Hawkins, Earl "Fatha" Hines and Charlie Mingus.

What to Listen for in Mozart: A Guide for the Curious
ASIN: 1551990210
Release Date: 1997-01-01 |
Book Description
The essential introduction to the world's foremost composer and to the hidden pleasures of classical music.
Beethoven's enduring popularity eclipses all other composers. Over a century and a half has passed since his death, yet his towering accomplishments remain the standard against which all other Western music has been judged. This fascinating and accessible guide to understanding both the man and the musician is also a rewarding exploration of the basics of classical music itself.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for the new classical hobbyist.......2005-03-16
Robert Harris has a reputation for writing in a way that those new to classical music can easily comprehend. Yet, it isn't a basic book either that you can get in a couple hours either. Harris intersperses his quite engaging story telling of Beethoven's life and times along with the major musical works and their significance. In fact, his narrative on Beethoven's life is so much more interesting and readable than the more standard texts. In particular, his treatment of Beethoven's deeply personal struggle with his worsening deafness is detailed and fascinating. His writing has the mark of a great educator in that you can understand without struggle (unlike other books). There is little music jargon so the beginner need not fear this book. He also highlights (as in his Mozart edition), the "Top 40" major works and says a little about each to place them in context.
Last, he gives a little less "note-by-note" analysis of major works here than in his earlier Mozart book which seems to work just fine as it can be too much for some and bogs down in the Mozart book in my opinion. Summary: an unintimidating, really rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable book that will give you a deeper respect and appreciation of Beethoven and his monumental music.

Please Buy This Book!.......2006-06-09
This is a book about music for musicians who don't want to read about music.
I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. Perhaps, the book may require some knowledge as a musician to truly be meaningful.
Adolphe's non-technical musical meanderings are perfect get-away for someone who is around music all the time. I've owned this book for 5 years and I always come back to it. This book is not a cover-to-cover book, but rather a collection of thoughts about our world and music. Sublime.
I have given this book as a gift on several occaisions and each person has been delighted upon reading it.
PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!.......2005-03-16
This book is awful. Get a different book about music, or better yet get some good music and listen to that, but don't waste your time on this book. This book only serves to make broad statements that seem to say nothing. If anything this book may be valuble to someone only interested in poetry, but as it tries to be about music it dissapoints.
Beautiful, evocative writing..........2000-08-09
I loved this book. You can read it in an hour...or take weeks. It soothes the musician's soul with its words of beauty about our art...and the later pages that deal with specific composers will bring tears to your eyes. I highly recommend this book to all musicians...and all who wish to understand musicians.
A Great Book.......2000-02-08
This book takes all the things you want to say about music and puts it into words. As it contains many short quotes along with chapters, it is a great book for anyone who loves music; even if they don't love reading.

What to Listen for in Music
Aaron. COPLAND
Manufacturer: Mentor
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000FJNVIY |
Product Description
In this fascinating analysis of how to listen to music intelligently, Aaron Copland, the noted modern composer, poses two basic questions: Are you hearing everything that is going on? Are your really being sensitive to it? If you cannot answer yes to both of these questions, you owe it to yourself to read this book. Whether you listen to Mozart or Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland's provocative suggestions for listening to music from the composer's point of view will bring you a deeper appreciation of the most rewarding of all art forms.
Customer Reviews:
A great book by the master American composer Aaron Copland.......2006-06-08
I read this for the first time back in about 1989 and it taught me the basics of listening to classical music because that was when I first started buying classical cds. I thought that I had lost the book but found it in the back of my closet a few weeks ago. I think I've forgotten about half of what I learned going through it the first time so I think I'm going to have to give it a second read. A lot of it is on the art of music in general, so if you're not into classical music, it's still a very good book to read. When you learn what the basic terms in the classical music genre are, it makes listening to classical music a lot more rewarding to a newbie like I was back then. This is definitely one of the greater manuals about classical music you will find and definitely one of Aaron Copland's finest achievements in his long illustrious career.

Book Description
In this concise and engaging analysis of rock music, music theorist Ken Stephenson explores the features that make this internationally popular music distinct from earlier music styles. The author offers a guided tour of rock music from the 1950s to the present, emphasizing the theoretical underpinnings of the style and, for the first time, systematically focusing not on rock music's history or sociology, but on the structural aspects of the music itself.
What structures normally happen in rock music? What theoretical systems or models might best explain them? The book addresses these questions and more in chapters devoted to phrase rhythm, scales, key determination, cadences, harmonic palette and succession, and form. Each chapter provides richly detailed analyses of individual rock pieces from groups including Chicago, the Beatles, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Kansas and others. Stephenson shows how rock music is stylistically unique, and he demonstrates how the features that make it distinct have tended to remain constant throughout the past half-century and within most substyles. For music students at the college level and for practicing rock musicians who desire a deeper understanding of their music, this book is an essential resource.
Customer Reviews:
Analytical Study of Rock Music.......2007-06-14
This book is a serious analytical study of rock music. It is an in depth look at the theoretical underpinnings of what makes rock unique. It is similar to the standard textbooks on tonal theory, but explores the unique aspects of rock and roll. It includes discussion of rhythm, phrasing, form and chord progression.

Product Description
"Note on the Revised Edition: Almost twenty years have passed since the first edition of this book was issued in 1939. It is naturally gratifying to me to know that it has continued to be found useful by music listeners since that time, both in America and abroad. During the past two decades we have witnessed an unprecedented spread of interest in all forms of music throughout the world. Both the quantity and quality of music listening have changed, but fortunately for the author, the basic problems of "what to listen for" have remained about the same. For that reason, only minor corrections were needed in the body of the text. Two new chapters have added---one on the thorny question of how present-day composition should be listened to, the other considering the comparatively new province of film acoring and its relation to the movie-goer. The first of these added sections needs a word of explanation in view of my original claim, in the Preface to the first edition, that contemporary composition posed no special listening problems of its own. This still seems to me to be true. Nevertheless, it is equally true that after fifty years of so-called modern music there are still thousands of well-intentioned music lovers who think it sounds peculiar. It seemed worth an extra try to see if I could elucidate some few facets of new music listening that do not come within the scope of other chapters. Both new sections are based on articles originaly prepared for The New York Times Magazine. My thanks are due the editors for permission to recast some of the material originally printed there. At the back of the book a list of recordings of works mentioned in the text (with a few additions) will be found. For those interested in further reading, a short bibliography has been added, including a special listing of books by composer-authors. These were set down in the hope that listeners would want to hear composers speak for......" [by Aaron Copland, Crotonville, New York, 1957]

Sooo much better than the text I tried first (Idiot's Guide to Access). The entire book is much more simplified. TRULY a beginner's guide.
A non IT person's review.......2005-11-06
I am a doctor and I have been reading various books on access. I realise that access is a very complicated application development database program. It is easy to come to gripes with word, excel and for a non IT person like me, it is very easy to get going with these programs soon. But to do justice to access for your own needs, it has taken me a lot of time to get going and I have lot of way to go yet. But this book gives you the confidence and a grip on the subjet for a beginner and the authors rightly put it on their cover page. 'ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR ACCESS EXPERIENCE NECESSARY'
I would heartily recommend this book for all novices who have no knowledge of access and want to make simple databases of their own.

Recently I had to pick up Access very quickly since the temp assignment I got was nothing but. After spending nearly half an hour comparing Access books in a local bookstore I decided to get this one and the Microsoft official guide. While the Microsoft guide I plan on returning, this book has been a gem and truly got me up to speed from knowing nothing at all. I skimmed through the first 100 pages in about an hour, referencing the computer in front of me to see what went where, and then the next day I was able with the book's help to design a few reports and a rudimentary database for my boss. The next day forms, more reports, queries, and relationships were added into the mix and I've now, about a week later, made it through most of the book and have a real database up and running.
What I like about this book is that it's very well laid out, especially when I compare it to the Microsoft guide. I had little or no problem jumping between chapters to locate the information I was looking for, and the techniques they work through, for the most part, furnished me with everything I've needed to do. While it's called an Absolute Beginner's Guide, it doesn't pull punches in terms of watering down the material or in unnecessary explanations.
If you don't know anything about Access and need to get up to speed quickly, this is the book you want. The only thing I wished that it included was stuff about setting up security and permissions, but other than that, I think this is a great buy.

Good book to learn from...But Electronic Edition is B&W ;-(.......2006-01-19
I got the electronic edition. Figured as long as I had one note on my tablet PC I might find it convenient to just switch between the book (adobe reader format) and use one note as I read about it. The one drawback that I saw is the Electronic Edition for some reason is in Black and White. (I tried using the Library's 24 hour download rental and could only get a few pages that were in color, so I know the book is in color...and it would have cost the publisher nothing to let the color come out) so it makes the examples a tad challenging once in awhile, but you can figure it out as you are using your One Note to go along. I think this will be a great program for me as I have ADD and have notes everywhere in my office, house and laptop. Putting them all in one place and being able to keep track of my projects all in one place is vital to me. Saves me time and trouble.

I'm not a new Word user, but my office upgraded to Office 2003. I saw things on my screen that I didn't recognize. So, I ordered this book and got my answers. This Task Pane thing is a big change. It keeps popping up. The author explained what it was and how to use it. Thank goodness!

The best.......2004-11-10
I needed some help in creating a presentation. I checked out four books on Powerpoint from my library. I read them all, and this book was by far the best. I have returned all the books to the library, and I will now buy this book for my permanent, personal library.
Easy to understand, perfect for beginners.......2004-02-10
I've never used PowerPoint before so I ordered this book. I'm so glad I did. I got started right away and in no time, I was creating my own presentations. The explanations are clear and to the point and the illustrations helped me from losing my place.
I should mention that even though this book is geared for beginners, it goes into enough detail to appeal to many different levels of users. Check out the table of contents and you'll see what I mean. Great job Mr. Gilgen!
