Perfect dover edition.......2003-11-14
I should firstly state that i am merely a 20 year old autodidact "musician", or better said "music-logyst", since i don't master any instrument. my wisdom is only intuitive.
- REGARDING THE EDITION: dover edition is perfect, flawless.
- ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA: I believe it the best in the lot, although i do not enjoy it all. Straus intention was an homenage to Nietzshe's genius, an homenage he achieved only in: "of the backworldsmen", which i believe is the culmination, the highest piece of that kind of harmony wagner introduced in his "tristan und isolde" prelude. It starts with the "crescendo" of the cellos and violins creating a melodic armony, an aparent armony; and as the crescendo goes on and on the melodic-armony begins to be in danger by it, and so is evident to the spectator that if the crescendo continues, at some point, necessarily, the armony will blow up, vanish. The maximum of the string crescendo is power-full.
Reading clearly the symbols of music gives you the aptitude of recreating it, and this dover editions should become classics of shining representation.
Three Great Tone Poems.......2003-08-12
Richard Strauss was in many ways the epitome of the late romatic composer, and perhaps the only true musical descendant of Richard Wagner. His tone poems, like any great piece of music, are like a whole seperate world.
The tone poems in this volume are three of his most popular. The escapades of Til Eulenspiegel, the familiar opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra (and the less familiar final bars that can't make up their mind what key to close in), and the 'heroic' Ein Heldenleben reveal Strauss at his most complex, lyrical, bombastic and egotistical. True masterworks worth repeated hearings.
The complexity of these scores is astounding. But with a little patience and experience, following along with the score can reveal many inner beauties of this music that is well worth the effort.
No complaints with Dover's edition. Large format, clearly printed, and economical. How does Dover do it? Recommended!
Just as great as Tone Poems Series I.......2001-12-08
Another superb score from Dover. It's large (9 3/8 x 12 1/4), lays easily on a stand or table, very readable, durable, and generally free of errors (notation-wise, it's perfect).
Excellent again.......2000-06-17
Richard Strauss' tone poems for orchestra are among the finest pieces of the music History, and we have to thank Dover Pubs. for reprinting and putting together all the music in this inexpensive edition. All the tone poems are impressive demostrations of orchestral force and virtuosism (specially Zarathustra), and with this book you can fully appreciate the genius of the author. The layout is very clear and easy readable, which is excellent to follow the music and enjoy it completely. At this price, it is a must for anyone willing to study the pieces or just to have a good time with Strauss' music. Definitely recommended, as well as the other volume (Series I).

The Tone Poems Of Richard Strauss.......2003-08-12
No music truly exists in a book. The composer puts his directions on paper, and the musician tries his best to do what the composer has directed to do. Play this note high, this note low, this note long, this note short, etc. Music is an art that really doesn't exist until it comes to life through the time it takes to perform it. Like a seed, the score of an orchestral work lies dormant until the musician(s) plant it, nurture it through performance.
For the few that can read a score like the rest of us read a newspaper, the music can come alive in the imagination of their inner ear. For the rest of us mortals, following the score while the music plays can help us 'see' the tree come to life with our ears and revel in all of the life and vitality it contains.
The tone poems of Richard Strauss are like vast, sprawling trees. There is no need to follow a score to admire the beauty of the trees. If that were so, symphony orchestras would pass out copies of the score to the audience and keep the lights on. But following the score is like climbing right up into the tree. You can see the diversity, the details, and even look down at the ground and realize where you are.
So to be able to appreciate these masterpieces on a different level, following the score can be a revelation. Dover's edition of these tone poems is inexpensive, of good quality, and I especially like the large format. If you try to follow a miniature score of these works, you best have really great eyes or a magnifying glass. These are vast, romantic works, and Strauss uses a very large orchestra. So the large format is much easier to read and follow.
So if you ever have the urge to get closer to these masterpieces, then by all means let the Dover edition of the scores be your guide. Your efforts to climb the tree will be well rewarded!
I love this score.......2001-12-08
A great score, with no errors and very large, readable print. Great companion for listeners, music students, and conductors alike.
The score is very large (9 3/8 x 12 1/4) and lays flat on a stand or table. Highly reccommended!
Superb is the word!.......2000-07-07
Richard Strauss knew how to make symphonic music with great drama as well as humour. The three grand symphonic masterpieces of this edition just has it all. Dare I say that some of the music in Tod Und Verklarung is some of the most beautiful and heartbreaking music ever written? And how about the great humor revealed in Don Quixote? Richard Strauss truly is a master of the orchestra. If you don't believe me, have a look yourself. It just hardly get any better than this. Thank you Dover for this excellent book!
Book Description
Harish-Chandra was a mathematician of great power, vision, and remarkable ingenuity. His profound contributions to the representation theory of Lie groups, harmonic analysis, and related areas left researchers a rich legacy that continues today. This book presents the proceedings of an AMS Special Session entitled, "Representation Theory and Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis: A Special Session Honoring the Memory of Harish-Chandra", which marked 75 years since his birth and 15 years since his untimely death at age 60.
Contributions to the volume were written by an outstanding group of internationally known mathematicians. Included are expository and historical surveys and original research papers. The book also includes talks given at the IAS Memorial Service in 1983 by colleagues who knew Harish-Chandra well. Also reprinted are two articles entitled, "Some Recollections of Harish-Chandra", by A. Borel, and "Harish-Chandra's c-Function: A Mathematical Jewel", by S. Helgason. In addition, an expository paper, "An Elementary Introduction to Harish-Chandra's Work", gives an overview of some of his most basic mathematical ideas with references for further study.
This volume offers a comprehensive retrospective of Harish-Chandra's professional life and work. Personal recollections give the book particular significance. Readers should have an advanced-level background in the representation theory of Lie groups and harmonic analysis.

Sold our house in a SNAP!.......2006-08-09
I've been a long-time fan of Ann and so when my mother's home wasn't selling, I knew it was time to call in "The Doctor". I had seen Ann's show come to the aid of home sellers and now it was time her tricks to the test.
Using Ann's tips, we depersonalized and decluttered the home without breaking the bank. Inexpensive ideas and good photography in conjuction with an enjoyable read make this one of my favorite how-to books for homeowners. Renters, this one you should pass on since you aren't financially investing in your property.
Every potential buyer that toured our home AFTER we put Ann's ideas in action loved the design changes we'd made. The compliments were overwhelming and the feedback was encouraging.
We got our asking price without a hassle and learned quite a bit about home improvements in the process.
Bring the doctor into your home even if you AREN'T planning to sell. I've used her suggestions in my current home and am pleased as can be with the results. Thank you, Dr. Ann!

Book Description
This book describes the capabilities and limitations of the human operator—both physical and mental—and how these should be used to guide the design of systems with which people interact. General principles of human-system interaction and design are presented, and included are specific examples of successful and unsuccessful interactions. It links theories of human performance that underlie the principles with real-world experience, without a heavy engineering-oriented perspective.
Topics include design and evaluation methods; different systems such as visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, automated, and transportation; cognition, decision-making, and aesthetics; physiology; and stress, safety, accidents, and human error.
An excellent reference for personnel and managers in the workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Textbook has supported class well........2007-07-19
I've used this book in my human factors grad/undergrad class for 4 years. This book is the only text in human factors with up to date information from research in cognitive science, and a cognitive science perspective on human error. The book is weaker on the ergonomics and design side, and quite weak on social aspects of human factors. I use the book in combination with Don Norman's book and the Casey book of case studies.
I do not require students to memorize the book. They use it as a reference for doing problem solving and case analyses. It contains good research references and many important facts and figures that human factors and design professionals need.
Useless........2006-12-11
This was the single most atrocious example of a "text book" I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Very poor editing throughout, and often the outline structure was unnavigable. Adding to that problem, was poor grammar and sections that simply made no sense. "...incentive programs are effective over long periods of time as long as they are not dropped permanently at some point." My suggestion, if you have a class that requires this textbook, find a new class.
Very Poor Writing.......2006-12-09
Just finished a HF course and this was the required text for the course. This text is awful. Very poor writing, incorrect or misleading info is presented, in the area's of work physiology, etc. The author did not explore or offer ANY additional insight in area's such as bio-mechanics etc.. HUGE sections of the text are pure quotes from other sources.. Very poor.. All I can say is thank goodness I was able to sell the book.
Good introduction to Human Factors Engineering.......2002-02-20
Wickens et al. really fill the gap between system engineering and cognitive psychology. I have found quite a few of books of this kind.
The book contains good examples and references for workplace design, environmental conditions and several other applications that make it useful for a course textbook or professional's desk reference.
One word of caution (mea culpa as well): the authors did not address in this version the engineering tradition of poor, monotonous writing.
Extraordinary!.......2000-09-30
Wickens is a true pioneer in the field of human factors who fills the gap between (system) engineering and cognitive psychology with great diligence and competence. This book, "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering", is another excellent reference tool made for engineers to integrate psychologic research results in their creations; I read it in combination with Wickens' "Engineering Psychology and Human Performance", which concentrates rather on the psychological perspective of human factors than on practical design advices. Both books have considerable overlappings, and are similar to each other, even in the structure of the chapters; nevertheless, I highly recommend them both. I have not (yet) found better literature for this field.

Book Description
Appropriate for a first course in Human Factors and Ergonomics taken by engineers and psychology majors, this book explains ergonomic design. It teaches students about designing products, such as tools, machines, or systems, as well as the tasks or jobs people perform, and environments in which people live. Introduction to Human Factors and Ergonomics for Engineers explores methods of obtaining these objectives, uniquely approaching the topic from an engineering perspective as well as a psychological standpoint.
The textbook offers a heavy emphasis on design, and gives broad coverage of design principles and techniques of predicting human performance. Critiques of principles and tools used in predictions are also addressed. Authors Mark R. Lehto and James R. Buck adopt a quantitative angle so that students experience the applications of statistics, and observe the implications of those results to the design. Challenging end-of-chapter problems are exceptionally valuable for course instruction. Moreover, the book presents numerous vignettes to illustrate practical examples of theoretical concepts.
This text is appropriate for engineering, psychology, and science students at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also ideal for engineers and designers. For students, a background in the fundamentals of probability and statistics is assumed.
Book Description
More than ever, designers and technologists are considering human factors in the product design process. Users are now seen as key to the overall look and usability of products, not just passive. If a task can be accomplished with a reasonable degree of efficiency and comfort, then the product fits the user. The author, a leader in cognitive ergonomics, also argues that in practice these approaches can be dehumanizing. People are more than physical and cognitive processors. They have hopes, fears, dreams, and values; indeed these are the very things that make us human. Designing Pleasurable Products looks both at and beyond usability, considering how products can be both ergonomic and a joy to own.
