Sound principles expand horizons.......2007-09-11
Joachim-Ernst Berendt has a great gift for synthesizing informaion. This book is a must read for anyone interested in harmony and understanding our place in the universe as part of the great expression of spirit. It will also appeal to those who prefer more practical information as to how sound and music has transcended and unified while informing those who play as well as the listener. I just love this book! I'm a yoga teacher and a singer and this book really touched me on all levels.
Nada Brahma.......2005-12-27
I read this book a little while ago and it completely transformed the way I perceive the world around me. This book showed me the power that sound has. While the book is primarily concerned with the mysticism of sound, he also relates the world around us to sound, and shows us how reliable and accurate our ears are when compared to our eyes.
Joachim-Ernst Berendt also gives listening tests in some of the chapters to give the reader an opportunity to develop their sense of hearing, which he says is being underused in our predominantly visual western culture.
I am a private detective and ever since reading this book, I have always tried to use sound equipment and techniques on my investigations. Since reading this book I have completely re-evaluated and structured the approach and conduct of my work for the better. Can't recommend it enough.

Nadha Bhrama is an excellent esoteric book.......1999-12-04
My intimate partner is a spriritual practitioner of the Way of Adidam. He is also a musician and chanter. He finds this book both exciting and fascinating. I deals with subtle and cosmic aspects of music, sound and the manifest universe. He has wanted it for a long time. I am happy to have finally found it for him.

Extremely interesting and well written.......1998-11-21
This book explores the relationship between music, consciousness and the physical world. The author makes an interesting argument that objects in the physical world generally form into harmonious relationships, and he cites the movements of the planets, oxygen atoms in H20 and so forth as examples. This is well written and argued, not a purely metaphysical line.
Having described the harmony of the physical world at atomic and astronomical levels, he goes on to consider Nada Brahma, an Indian Yoga technique of 'listening to the internal sound current'. The technique consists essentially of blocking ones ears and listening to the 'sound currents' which do actually come when one performs the technique (I've tried it). By meditating on these sound currents, one is taken into deeper levels of concentration. This 'inner music' is related to the concept of the music of the spheres, and this notion is investigated historically.
Overall, the book is an excellent read, and I just regret I lent my copy to someone and never got it back. Maybe I'll have to get the next edition from Amazon.com, as it seems to be on their website. If you're a musician and want something spiritual, this meditation might be for you!

Name dropping abounds!.......2005-05-13
For an excellent view of upper class Paris of the 1890s you can look no further than this exciting and colorfully drawn book. Skinner sketches portraits of the people that darted in and out of the Parisian papers in a very human, dry and truthful touch. From the elegant wits of Boni de Castellane and Robert Montesquei to the Grand Horizontals of Liane de Pougy and La Belle Otero, and the equally fascinating society women in between, you'll be taken on a dazzling world that you won't wish to abandon.
Filled with 20 pictures from the times as well as details on the social round of Belle Epoque Paris--which rivaled that of late Victorian England--this book is a must see for fans of the English period who wish to know what was happening on the other side of the Channel(the French called it "The Sleeve"), as well as longtime Belle Epoque fans.

In the past, says Lawrence M. Friedman, society was essentially vertical: that is, everybody understood his or her identity as it existed within hierarchical relationships--husbands outranked their wives, parents outranked their children, kings outranked peasants, and so on. But the modern world, particularly through the spread of a global mass culture, makes it possible for people to engage in more horizontal relationships, creating affiliations with other people with whom they interact as equals, and thereby creating an individual identity for themselves.
The Horizontal Society is something like The Lexus and the Olive Tree by Thomas L. Friedman (no relation): focused on sociopolitics rather than economics and drained of the New York Times columnist's snappy prose. Lawrence Friedman does try for a certain casualness, yet his constant use of phrases such as as we shall see and of course do not convey intimacy so much as the sense of a teacher delivering a lecture. To be sure, Friedman is a distinguished law professor, and The Horizontal Society does have its uses as an introduction to a certain way of thinking about the intersection of global mass culture with regional communities, whether organized by nationality, ethnicity, or some other characteristic. But one finds oneself wishing for more details.
Friedman mentions intermittently, for example, that the coming together of gays and lesbians as a "virtual subnation" takes place, and that it is controversial. But how does it take place? And how does that controversy inform the identity of the community and its members? Likewise, he has little more to say about the Internet other than that "it constitutes a forum where people talk to each other across great distances." Well, yes, this is, of course, true, but there is perhaps something more to be said. Ultimately, The Horizontal Society would perhaps best be considered as a starting point for the reader's inquiry into the book's concerns, rather than an answer in and of itself. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
Modern mass media-in particular, television-has radically and irretrievably altered our sense of identity and hence our social, political, and legal life, says Lawrence M. Friedman in this bold book. In traditional societies, identities were strongly vertical, fixed by birth or social position. But in today`s horizontal society people are freer to choose who they are and to form relationships on a plane of equality.

thought-provoking thesis .......2007-05-26
I did not gain so much insight from this book, which has a politically correct "generic-neutral" tone throughout, which for me makes it not as palatable. There were however interesintg observations which I've added to my repertoire. My main dislike in reading it was the political correctness, which is vaguely defined, more easily as neutral language which won't offend anybody. Unfortunately fear of being labeled as politically uncorrect or with harsher epithets that people use is one reason why many people don't say whats on their minds, otherwise we would all be misanthropic, homophobic, racist, xenophobic, religious, republican/democrat, conservative (but not really liberal), patriarchial bigots. In my opinion liberal ideology is more responsible for propogating political correctness, would you honestly be afraid of being labeled a liberal at your university, a bastion of political correctness? Or would being labeled as conservative cause more discomfort in your sociology class? To explain my view, because these issues touches nerves and upsets emotions, liberal and conservative are stupid labels. There is no ideal "liberal" or model "conservative" among the american public, aside from the stereotypes. And if there was an "ideal" liberal or conservative, their position would then become fundamental by the definition of ideal (the right attitude/moral/method etc.) and debate would be shut down. Its impossible to debate with fundamentalists, religious or secular, because for them there is no debate on the validity of their opinions, they only want to convince you that they're right, but usually not by using reason.
This is a perfect example for demonstrating my contention with some of the material in this book, which examines identities. So here, for example, you have a liberal or a conservative view, part of your identity. You then belong to a group, you have a membership, and this membership has benefits and downsides. A downside of being liberal is conservatives might not respect you (though they should as we're all human) and a downside of being conservative is the same, although from my perspective liberals are much more bellicose towards conservative ideology and I have read and heard nasty insults aimed at conservatives.
As further demonstration for identities being unreliable and often vague, american liberals and conservatives differ very much from european progressive and conservative thinkers. So much depends on cultural and environmental factors, all the way down to the level of the individual, that creating categories in order to define thinking, reasoning beings, while helpful in some cases, is absurd. In taxonomy there are often species which don't appear to clearly belong to one genus or another and its even more so when you consider the spectrum of human opinion.
There are other arguments for explaining why its absurd to treat people differently because of skin color, appearance, sexuality, nationality, religion, consumer preferences or social stand. I treat people based on the choices they make and I judge these choices according to my personal moral standard, which I also hold myself to. I don't care about skin color, sexual preference or any of these although I will readily admit it takes effort to overcome the prejudices you receive from your environment. I do not try to maintain a specific "identity", nor do I care what others view is of my "identity", I prefer intellectual autonomy much more than intellectually constrictive membership. Who you are is who you are, what you think and why you think it, NOT what you wear, who you find attractive, what you buy, what race you are, if you're handicapped, deaf, blind, azerbaijani or whatever.
My argument is that while these categories are important to be aware of, they should not determine the value of a individual. The value of an individual depends on the choices they make. Sorry, it's not PC to say, but not everybody has the same value in society. Before you take offense let me repeat, value is based on your choices, be responsible for what you do and how your actions affect others. If you're looking for value in your life, I recommend treating others with the same amount of value you want for yourself. What goes around comes around.
Back to the book review. My point is: these identities and memberships, while they unite a collective on the microlevel, serve to divide society on the macrolevel. People form an "us vs. them" mentality. Its dangerous to lump people in the "them" category haphazard, because you create a common enemy out of a fragmented group, who doesn't evern share a uniform ideology (unless led by a leader a la Fascism or hypernationalism). Americans, as a fragmented group, are mostly individuals who can and do think for themselves. Don't use a stereotype to justify hating your neighbor, one should try to understand things rationally before reacting emotionally when somebody has a different point of view. Its called DEBATE and its a useful tool. Convince them you're right with a logical and reasonable argument.
The tacit imposition of political correctness is one reason one group's ideology holds sway over that of another group, because their usually the group to be offended, typical good guy - bad guy scenario where nobody wants to be the bad guy, so they avoid expressing themselves in ways that could be interpreted as such. In my personal opinion, the individual can choose to be offended or not, and there are both valid and spurious justifications for taking offense, which often I don't think people take time to examine.
This review is more a reflection on the culture represented in this book than on the book itself, so apologies if it doesn't help you. If you want a different opinion read the book (actually the author, in staying PC, does not offer anything other than a generic "safe" opinion in the conclusion) The book was interesting in the beginning but I lost interest and had to drag through it to finish. Honestly the first couple chapters give you enough understanding. He mentions a lot of subgroups, but does not go into much detail or examination.
One insight I gained from this book is the very prevalent role our identities and who we are and how we are perceived have in our daily lives. I came to understand how, even in the USA, people willingly choose to seperate and segregate themselves from others when they claim to belong to a certain group, subgroup or clique. By including something you are also excluding something else, and groups which include members by this definition are also excluding individuals who don't have the desired qualities. I'm talking here about race, sexual orientation, ideologies etc. I'm not making judgements on these categories, just pointing out that they serve to divide just as well as they serve to unite. If humans are ultimately looking for solidariety with each other, condoning tribalistic behavior and promoting "identities" and trying to find membership in specific groups will make it difficult to achieve this goal.
The book examines identities as part of modern society. It does not trace their roots or offer any examination arriving at a concrete conclusion in a scientific manner, instead its mostly sociological commentary. The author is a lawyer at Stanford university, and although an "intellectual", is not, in my opinion after reading this book, giving much more than food for thought. No ground-breaking insights. But it will encourage you to examine groups, subgroups, identity politics and what role they have in society, which is important for general understanding.
I paid $2 for a used version with marking and coffee stains because the $45 going to Yale press could be better spent in my opinon. Knowledge should not be a commodity and education should be free or as close to free as possible. I just finished the last of 6 finals this week and am relaxing be writing an absurdely long and in-depth review as well giving commentary on how I view society, which you probably wouldn't read from someone unless you seeked it out. So I just (possibly) saved you the trouble of buying the book or paying too much for it AND the effort of finding and reading my opinion on society somewhere else. Read books like this and discuss them with your friends, thats what they're there for.
If you read this entire review I commend you and would probably consider you an interesting person to chat with. Thanks for your thought, you should buy the book.

Autobiography of an avenger...and a most strange childhood.......2005-01-25
I have long been a fan of the Avengers series (particularly the episodes with Diana Rigg) and very much a fan of the dapper Mr. Steed aka Patrick Macnee.
His autobiography is fascinating in recounting his childhood with a drunken, horse-trainer father and a beautiful, lesbian mother. His mother soon after his birth leaves his father and moves in with her lover, Evelyn and the young Patrick is ordered to refer to her as "Uncle Evelyn" and instructed to wear kilts, never trousers. Evelyn's estate held a surfeit of women of her persuasion and young Patrick's life there was a delicious farce in the reading, although I'm sure it was not in the actually living it.
His story unfolds as he attends Eton and is, shortly before graduation, expelled after finally being caught in his book making and pornography endeavors. Once a young adult and working to become a successful performer the book loose some of its force.
He seems to spend an inordinate amount of time in pursuit of and in enjoyment of "wine, women and song" and the telling, although lighthearted and witty, becomes more sluggish.
The descriptions of the Avenger years is short and could have benefited by a little more length.
All in all, a testament to the resiliency of the human animal, that Macnee finally matures into a responsible, caring individual (it does take him a while, though) in spite of a very weird and slipshod childhood.
A Bold Admission.......2001-03-14
Patrick Macnee has finally arrived at peace, in the autumn of his life. If he'd arrived sooner, perhaps we'd see a richer Patrick. Rich, in terms of fullness of having properly explored life as it was meant to be lived. As Patrick admits, much of his life was spent in a whirlwind of chasing loves that could not be, as he had no direction in life. A testament to us all to prepare and support our children well emotionally, to face the hurdles that inevitably will lie before them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom, Patrick. Your insight into life is much appreciated.
From the bizarre to the mundane, Steed rides again........1998-04-08
Many years ago I read the works of J.P.Dunleavy and believed all of his characters to be fiction (excepting the Ginger Man of course). Patrick MacNee brings to life, a childhood filled with characters so outrageously bizarre that I must now reread Dunleavy. And that is the best compliment that I can give. As the remainder of his life is rather plodding, it pales in comparison to his early years. A little more detail on The Avengers would have been nice too. The language can at times be a little pretentious but then, so could MacNee.

Armchair Hacker.......2007-09-27
Great Book. I read 2600 and similar. Im not a serious hacker but love to
know the cracks. More armchair than doing . Lot of good stuff in this book.
Started reading in Borders then bought on Amazon for better price.
Outdated, Not useful........2006-03-17
This book starts with using Windows 98. 4 versions of windows have been released since then it also has crappy exploits that are outdated and do not work. dont waste your money.
Easy Read; Informative.......2006-02-25
As an IT professional, I was looking for comprehensive reading to strenghten my network security knowledge. This book fulfilled that goal well. I am very pleased at the value obtained. I would surely recommend this material to those interested. It appears easy enough of a read for a beginner, but even as a seasoned vet I found it very useful.

Unofficial...meaning 'Unauthorised'.......2006-01-11
Aside from any moral qualms about the legitimacy of such a book (of which I remain neutral) this is clearly not written by an 'authority' on this subject, so any serious hacker would find it no more dangerous than halitosis in a gas station.
Lots of waffle and posturing. Not convinced he actually understands the more advanced 'code' snippets he introduces (e.g. he manages to confuse a c 'header' with a 'library', also why would any serious security hacker write a keylogger in pascal!!!? Many parts are REALLY badly explained and have basic errors for a 2nd edition (see p356 - the first Xor table has a basic error in third row). Several bits of the text look suspiciously familiar (i.e. possibly cut and pasted from unacknowledge sources, which might explain the inconsistencies).
I gave two (generous) consolation stars because (a) the breadth is to be commended (at least he tried), and (b) the fact that you can still pick things up interesting snippets from this book; so long as you suspend the urge to yell WRONG! at it, and (c) Contrary to the previous reviewer who gave it 5 stars (a 'friend' no doubt) this book states on the last page that it is aimed at 'beginners'.
