My son, a music composer, asked for this book as a gift and found it very helpful. He istrying to get some of his work published.

5 out of 5 stars Naked No More.......2006-09-08

I purchased Randall Wixen's "Guide" on a whim, having never made a cent off of my home-brewed ditties and not sure I ever would. Now, nine months after moving to Los Angeles, I'm approaching a meeting with a major 'performing rights organization,' and I couldn't be armed with a better tool.

In his "Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing," Wixen sets forth in lay terms the basic in's and out's of the music publishing world. He demystifies this piece of the industry with clear examples and makes palatable material that we "creative types" often leave untouched. Importantly, he does it with humor and panache--the stuff is actually readable.

At minimum, you'll finish the book feeling like you at least know how NOT to get screwed in this music publishing arena; at maximum, you'll feel ready to set up your own publishing company, collect every penny off of your art, and take over the world.

And hey, if you don't believe me, just flip through the Foreword, penned by a local little songster named Tom Petty.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-19

Music producers and musicians know all too well the hardships of producing ad distributing good music and some of the agreed to share their experiences with novices to improve their chances of success. This book is a simple but effective guide to the music world, a good book but it doesn't come close to Ty Cohen's "How To Make A Fortune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" ,a book that contains all of the above plus information never revealed in another title before.

5 out of 5 stars Expert Tells Songwriters and Musicians How To Avoid Pitfalls.......2006-03-21

Randall Wixon rose though the ranks of music publishers to become the largest independent in the business, known for his integrity, insight and sharp wit. Here he provides us with an easy-to read guide that makes common sense out of the seemingly complex financial side of the Music Business. No one could make this subject easy--Randall does as good a job as humanly possible to make it interesting and digestable. Anyone with a financial stake in a song, a lyric, a recording, will count this as must reading, even if they then go out to hire professional representation. I am a member of ASCAP with about 10 songwriting credits garnered over the years as a professional writer in Hollywood (Mostly at Disney Studios and Warner Bros), and yet I was embarrassed at how little I actually knew about my own rights. So anyone from a beginner to a semi-irregular song writer like myself to a prolific musician with hundreds of credits can and will profit from a careful reading of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for Petty fans, or just music fans.......2007-04-10

Tom Petty has become one of my favorite musicians of late. His body of work is immense and there are some really great, lesser-known songs buried in his catalog. This book is a series of interviews with Petty over a few years. The author is a knowledgeable musician and Petty fan, and it comes through in the insightful questions he asks of his subject. As for Petty, he's a very down-to-earth, likable guy who just loves to play music. In the two parts of the book, he basically goes through the story of his career and then tells the stories behind many of his songs. While I drifted off here and there when he got into the details of who did what in the studio, most of the stories are very interesting, particularly the section on the Traveling Wilburys, where Petty talks about working with the likes of Dylan and Roy Orbison. And while Petty is definitely a rock `n' roll star, this bio reads less like your typical sordid tale of a rock band and more like the story of a group of serious, hard-working friends. Anyone who's ever seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live knows the extent to which his professionalism pays off onstage--he is a showman if there ever was one. Petty is not arrogant about his accomplishments, but he has no false modesty either. He gives and takes credit as it is due, and never comes across as anything but honest. I'd highly recommend it for any Petty fan, or just a fan of rock.

5 out of 5 stars One of the kings of American Pop.......2007-04-04

Being a fan of the under 3 minute pop tune, I became a Tom Petty follower early on after hearing the Heartbreakers live. A couple of years ago I reintroduced myself by attending a live show with the sans Stan Lynch line-up with Howie Epstein on Bass and vocals. Great Great band and killer tunes. What more can you ask for. I really enjoyed this book and
liked the casual vibe of the interaction between Petty and Zollo. It
was a smooth sailing read. Allen Devine

4 out of 5 stars a book about his music.......2006-09-06

I liked the book but came away wanting to know more about Tom's personality. The author doesn't delve deep into Tom's inner thoughts. Tom tries to talk about his life with Dana and how happy they are but sadly the author seems to cut him short while he's embellishing. I'm not sure if it's the interviewer (author) or Tom but I felt that the book could have had more depth into his persona rather than the Chronological sequence of his music career. For example, I would have like to know Tom's feelings on girls when he started out early in his career and if that is reflected in his songs, "The Waiting" or "Here Comes My Girl" or if it was more of how Mike Campbell felt about them because he wrote alot of songs too. The book was worth reading if you are a fan but I'm waiting for Tom to write his own book. Tom, are you listening?

4 out of 5 stars A Technician Overview.......2006-08-31

A majority of the conversations center on songs from a musical specialist standpoint: discussions re: melodies, chords, etc. While this is probably extremely interesting to those "in the know" it does become somewhat laborious for those not in the know. There are a few nuggets re: Tom's life etc. - would have preferred more information in this area as well as his opinion of other top musical acts. A majority of the background info is already available via the booklet included in the Playback box set. Nonetheless, it is a quick and easy read and a must for all TP fans.

    5 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2003-07-23

This is an excellent collection of Petty's best (through about 1993). It's not as if Petty's guitar work (whether his own or that of his sidemen) is extremely complex, but some of the odder little riffs that he uses, with open-string hammers and similar articulation techniques are made clearer here. (All the vocal harmonies are also in the book, a nice thing to have.) All but one of the songs in this book are on the CD "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits," and all but two from the CD are in the book, so they're great companions. Highly recommended.

This is so awesome! I love all the songs on this CD! The front of mine doesn't have the names of the songs though....but it's still good! My favorite song is "I Won't Back Down". I don't know what else to say about this but it's must buy for those who like this kind of music. It think only maybe adults might like it more than teens because it's an Oldie, but I'm one of those young generation teens that LOVE 70's and 80' music.

5 out of 5 stars So Thats How It's Really Done Boys.......1999-12-30

I play guitar and sing leads in a Tom Petty tribute act which should qualify this review. The material presented here is first rate. Whenever I introduce a new piece of material to the band there is usually some (a lot) discussion as to how the lead guitar fills are played. This little gem has included every bent note Mike Campbell plays in all the solos. Also included are some cool comments by Tom about every song in the book which by the way covers come of his best songs. MCA doesn't deserve it. End of dissusion.

5 out of 5 stars Local to National Celebrities Interviewed.......2006-03-20

This is a great book for anyone who is a fan, but also a real treat for people living in the metro-Detroit area, as a few of the celebrities asked are local TV and radio stars. She wrote to a lot of people over the years and has a great collection of stars' heroes, from Soupy Sales to Les Paul and of course Davy Jones! It's neat to find out who inspired the celebrities to be who they are today.

      5 out of 5 stars What a great concept for a book!.......2006-02-14

Mary Guerra is an authority on fandom as she is a member of a fanclub or two herself. I know this since she belongs to the fanclub I run for Davy Jones, Davy Devotees. Though the concept of fandom is normally perceived as being something the nonfamous possess, Mary spent years contacting various celebrities asking them just who they consider themselves a fan of and what fanclubs they would join if they could! She received personal responses from legends in the field of entertainment like RoseMarie and Phyllis Diller to Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar, Richard Petty, of racing fame, columnist, Liz Smith and "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe. Shirley Jones, Peter Noone and Mary's personal favorite, Davy Jones of The Monkees, are just a few of the many other highlighted celebrities. If you've been a fan of anyone at anytime, this book gives you an interesting look at who those we admire actually admire. At times the featured celebrities provide laughs and at other times intriguing revelations. Overall this is a fun read with a lot of heart!

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Look Into the Minds of Well-Known Celebrities.......2006-01-30

This book is fabulous. My husband and I found it to be a quick, entertaining read. We particularly enjoyed the entry from Mike Clark, our favorite radio DJ. It's interesting to see what people celebrities find heroic, and it conveys more of an inside look into their personality as well.

Did you know that Alice Kramden's (The Honeymooners) first job was as a jelly donut stuffer—and that she was then promoted to donut taster? Or that John Robinson (Lost in Space) was a professor at the University of Stellar Dynamics and that his daughter Penny had an IQ of 147? How about the fact that Sam Malone (Cheers) graduated from Boston Prep School and then was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox (jersey number 16) before he bought the bar where everybody knows your name? Highly detailed biographical information on 1,485 television characters who appeared on the small screen from 1947 through 2004 is provided in this extensive reference work (there are over 200,000 facts). Characters are arranged by first name and entries provide such information as full character names, years and place of birth, education, home address, marital status, jobs and much more. The broad range of characters is primarily from prime time network, cable and syndicated series. There is a performer's index and an appendix for characters by series and for characters by last name.

5 out of 5 stars It is a good book you will use often........2004-05-24

In the back of the book, you have a guide for all skills and what their characteristics are up to lvl 20, thats worth the price right there.

This means you can guestimate damage and strategize your skill investment and get an idea of what you max out or put 1 point into as well as where skills start to level off. i.e. you can compare the differences in the Sorc's cold shields. The second one has more defense bonus than the first and third. And we all know the "retaliate" thing is useless.

And how many times have you asked the question, which merc does holy freeze? or thorns? The book lists the mercs of act 2 norm, nightmare and hell. How about this question, how much strength does a shako need? Its in the book.

Granted it is not a 1.10 guide, but, if you play a lot like my friends and I, it is great to imagine a new character setup without looking at a website and getting their warped perception of what is an uber character. PLUS, you can look at the book during gameplay, I hate minimizing the screen to look at a website, doing that slows down gameplay.

Anyway, yes, it is old, but it is very good for understanding how some of the spells work and what benefit's they have to others. Pally auras, what are they? Does the radius grow when points are added? Granted 1.10 messed with this too :(

Newbies don't need the book, only old school, but if you've been around awhile, you know some skills go up and up and up and others level off, (like mana shield), it's nice to have the book around for experimenting. It lowers the anxiety of deciding skill point allocation (the most stressful part in the game).

I liked the book, and use it a lot, even though 1.10 kinda made things outdated. Still useful. I bought a second copy, and my brother uses it constantly. So thats 2 for 2 :) Anyway, if your a d2 fan, you'll love the back of the book, its cheaper than the ink you'll waste printing from a website.

I love D2, play a lot and refer to the book, it also makes a nice bathroom reader for those serious gamers.

Think about it, this book costs less than one 290, not that I have ever bought one, its worth it.

There is a person who didn't like the book, so they put like 5 bad reviews of the same review on the website? Whats that? If you play D2, you will pick up some stuff, even outdated a little as it is. Its like 80% accurate.

BART! If you make a 1.10 guide, I'll buy it!

          2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2003-01-16

To begin with, I believe that static, hardcopy guides to Diablo 2 are all useless, because the game is constantly being patched and changed. Monsters are given new abilities, the characteristics of certain levels are changed, and items are introduced, changed, or deleted altogether.

Therefore, the primary failing of this guide is that it is hopelessly out of date. The character building strategies are also hopelessly newbie-material - they provide the player with a 'balanced playing experience' but will give you a character that is much, much weaker than the best configurations.

This site has all of the up-to-date information, written by veteran players, that you could ever want to know, along with a forum populated by highly experienced and skilled players to help you. There is no reason to buy a guide when you can get much, much better for free.

Grading it on the basis of a hard-copy guide (that you can have open in front of you while playing, the sole advantage it has over diabloii.net), I suppose it isn't bad, which is why it got 2 stars instead of 1. While some of the information (such as items) is out of date, most of its tables are accurate and useful references. The strategies for using certain skills are also good to know - but keep in mind that these may not be the best, most efficient strategies.

I would only consider buying this book if you are absolutely, 100% new to the game.

1 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Out of Date..........2002-05-26

...Warning! This guide will be of use to those who only want a very general overview of the new Druid and Assassin character classes.... HOWEVER, the rest of the book is hopelesss outdated, seeing as it was written for the 1.07 version of D2 and the game is currently in its 1.09d patch...with promises of another ( 1.10 version ) patch sometime in June/July of 2002. This guide went in the trash when Blizzard released their 1.08 patch a mere three weeks into LoD's public release. Since then everything has changed vastly. Character skills have been altered so the tables are totally wrong. Sets and Uniques....well just about all of them have been changed, some beyond recognition. For example the unique round shield orginally a + skills necro item is now a sorcess skills item with total different mod's. As for the unique Archon staff ( an elite weapon), well it no longer exsists; instead it's name has been assigned to the unique Giant Thresher, which has totally different mod's and is used by a totally diffent kind of character! Most of the Runewords and Crafted items spells ( advertized as new for LoD ) have either been blocked or changed... about 90% of them weren't even in the guide to begin with! Just about everything is changed so completely that this guide would have to be TOTALLY rewritten ( perferably by someone who has actually played the game, not just read the fact sheets Blizzard passed down to them ). Even nearly a year later I see this guide in various stores and have to warn off people who want to get it... Don't get me wrong, LoD is a great game to try ( I play about 20-25 hrs per week on Realms ), but this guide is very outdated. Hopefully, someone will wake up at Brady and rewrite this book so it reflects the true picture of what D2LoD is now like on the Realms. Well, off to kill Diablo and his brothers... *evil chuckle* ...bye...

          1 out of 5 stars Another dissapointment.......2001-09-13

This book (supposedly) provides info on the new features of the expansion set. The only really useful parts of it are the tables in the last part, and this does not work to those who haven't downloaded the 1.08 or 1.09 patch. There are many things in the guide that have changed after the last patch, including new items, rune words and crafted items.

If you have web access, search there for the info you need. This guide is a complete waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Good guide, but unnecessary.......2006-06-18

This came with the Diablo BattleChest. It's a nice reference to have around, but it's nothing you won't be able to find online. There's nothing in the guide that will steer you the wrong way, and it is nice to have it in printed form. I wouldn't pay money for it, but if you're getting the BattleChest, it's a nice little bonus.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of *!@$ (DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY).......2002-06-04

if you ever play D2, do not buy this guide, I did when it was brand new, then you know what happened? They released version 1.02, and changed every skill stat, and item stat in the game, making every chart in the entire flippin book worthless. And even the writers opinions were killed because all the changing was to "change the balance" which makes other things more powerful than before, and some things less. As I write this, I still play D2 (quite obsesively) and we are now on patch 1.09 so even the expansion pack strategy guide, is out of date (based on 1.07) and it is now rumoured that version 1.10 is comming out soon. I sometimes look in my strategy guide and look at an item's stats, then look at the item in my inventory on the game and compare stats, all I can think about is laughing at how I wasted $20 on this when it was new. :(

          1 out of 5 stars sorry book.......2001-12-23

This book is just sorry.. I never thought that wasting (money) for this thing would kill me like that. Its better if you just play it normally by yourself or log on and use (an online site). thats the way i had to do it, cuz the book only tells you how to kill diablo with the 5 Diablo 2 characters. They should really put more work into the book, cuz it just plain sucks... I suggest that who ever thinks of buying this book, is way better off by playing it their own way. Thats the way i had to do it, so its just a good suggestion.

2 out of 5 stars Something for stupid people.......2001-06-01

The only thing I found useful in this guide was the list of items. Everything else in the guide has either been outdated, or is just some crap opinion from some guy saying that "It would be powerful if you did this..." and it's really only something useful in a single player game when you're just messing around.

I suggest to anyone that plays Diablo2, to just enjoy the game and look up anything they need to know about items on websites. All the other info in this book is pretty much useless, and becomes your own knowledge within a week of playing on your own anyways!

1 out of 5 stars this guide sux..........2001-03-07

this guide sux! it doesnt give any overall characterstrategies, and tells you everything you DONT need to know aboutquests - i dont care how to find the boss, tell me how to kill him! italso makes the bad skills seem good, which caused me to WASTE SKILLPTS on them. it also doesnt show how good some skills are. the guidesdoesnt show the damages for weapons, or even mention exceptionalitems. blizzards official website gives more info, and for free! italso has more pictures, and in color. i thought the guide would giveinformation not on the site - which MOST guides do. but no, it wasjust a waste of money. id get a better guide if i went to kinkos andtold them to print out and bind the whole blizz site.
