The photos are exceptional and each drink I have mixed has been better than the last. I have bought several as gifts for coworkers and friends. You won't be disappointed!

I have always wanted to go to the Tahitian islands but have never had the opportunity. Now, after reading "Cocktails in Tahiti", I am planning a trip to Tahiti for next Summer. I originally thought "Cocktails in Tahiti" would give me some good ideas for entertaining, but soon found out it contained many intersting nuggets about the islands and their history. To sum it up, I am packed and ready to go to these beautiful islands.
If you've ever dreamed of a tropical vacation or just need to brighten up your winter, you should read this book.
Beautiful Book.......2006-12-09
I have never been to Tahiti, but after reading the fun, informative facts about Tahiti, seeing the beautiful pictures, and sampling some of the excellent cocktail recipes, I am ready to go!
Mr. Bondurant's love and knowledge of Tahiti come through clearly in the book, which is very well laid out. It provides enough information and explains things in such a way that an amateur can make delicious Tahitian cocktails as well as the most experienced bartender. The fun facts about Tahiti, along with summaries of the total hotels and the gorgeous pictures, makes this book a must have.
Until I can take my first trip to Tahiti, this book will help bring a little Tahiti to my home.
Book Description
Belize, a tiny corner of the Caribbean wedged into Central America, has been a fast food nation since buccaneers and pirates first stole ashore. As early as the 1600s it was already caught in the great paradox of globalization: how can you stay local and relish your own home cooking, while tasting the delights of the global marketplace? Menus, recipes and bad colonial poetry combine with Wilk's sharp anthropological insight to give an important new perspective on the perils and problems of globalization.

Review of "Home Cooking in the Global Village".......2006-12-10
This excellent book, which I recently taught in an upper level undergraduate course, examines Belizean food from the time of Europeans' arrival to the present. It moves beyond the dichotomies of cultural homogenization and hybridity or resistance to show that globalization and localization are part of the same process and this has been true for several centuries. It is without a doubt the best thing I have read on globalization and consumption and I'll be thinking a lot about it as I develop my research on consumer culture in Latin America. I particularly liked the analyses of the symbolism of meat among pirates, respectability and reputation, the style sandwich, and the rise of Belizean cuisine. The idea of "home cooking" conterposed to the fast vs. slow food debate is terrific, and closing the book with the "beans and rice" recipe was a delightful touch. I would strongly recommend it to readers interested in globalization and consumer culture in Latin America as well as food studies.

Book Description
Food in the Caribbean reflects both the best and worst of the Caribbean's history. On the positive side, Caribbean culture has been compared with a popular stew there called Callaloo. The stew analogy comes from the many different ethic groups peacefully maintaining their traditions and customs while blending together, creating a distinct new flavor. On the negative side, many foods and cooking techniques derive from a history of violent European conquest, the importation of slaves from Africa, and the indentured servitude of immigrants in the plantation system. Within this context, students and other readers will understand the diverse island societies and ethnicities through their food cultures. Some highlights include the discussion of the Caribbean concept of "making do"--using whatever is on hand or can be found--the unique fruits and starches, the one-pot meal, the technique of jerking meat, and the preference for cooking outdoors. The Caribbean is known as the cradle of the Americas. The Columbian food exchange, which brought products from the Caribbean and the Americas to the rest of the world, transformed global food culture. Caribbean food culture has wider resonance to North, Central, and South America as well. The parallels in the food-related evolution in the Americas include the early indigenous foods and agriculture; the import and export of foods; the imported food culture of colonizers, settlers, and immigrants; the intricacies of defining an independent national food culture; the loss of the traditional agricultural system; the trade issues sparked by globalization; and the health crises prompted by the growing fast-food industry. This thorough overview of island food culture is an essential component in understanding the Caribbean past and present.
Customer Reviews:
Author talks. . . .......2005-11-20
I wrote this book because I have always been moved by the experience of consuming Caribbean food, and because I love reading and writing about it -- whether it be my own writing, or reading the writing of others. The awareness that diverse groups of people have come together -- in various states of contentment and discontentment -- to produce even a morsel of one Caribbean meal both humbles and excites me. It was out of this modest idea that I wrote this book. I hope you enjoy it. I would love to answer any questions you have about it.

Pass on this one.......2007-06-06
This isn't a kid friendly, fun cookbook. There isn't anything lowfat or healthy about this cookbook. Not vegetarian either. And, very few recipes. A real waste of money.
This is a great CHILDRENS' book!.......2003-04-15
This is a charming little book, and only one in an entire JUVENILE series: Easy Menu Ethnic Cooking the Whatever Way.
The whole point of this series is to introduce juveniles to other cultures, traditions, regions, and cuisines. And to get them into the kitchen, cooking, and some idea of good nutrition. So of course the material is basic and straightforward. Frankly, I think these are delightful introductions to a foreign culture and cuisine even for adults.
I'm also thrilled to see that many books in this series have been, or are being updated, to include lower fat and vegetarian options.
I highly recommend this series for anyone wanting to broaden their children's tastes, and get them cooking.
too much filling, not enough recipe........2002-12-13
I was so disappointed in this book. It uses pages and pages to talk about the area, and more pages with elementary info about cooking. The recipes are VERY few, and in terms of low fat, they make "suggestions" that are childish and well known to anyone who eats the low fat way. I will never buy another cookbook on line.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for curious X-Files fans!.......1999-08-05
In this well written and researched volume by Mangels, we have what is essentially Guest Stars of The X-Files. In detailed episode guides, actors credits, personality profiles and exclusive interviews we learn more about the guest star faces that grace each and every episode of the show. Information here is current up to fourth season's "Gethsemane." It's surprising to see Jerry Hardin's acting credits take up a long five and a half pages! The book is profusely illustrated with the actor's b/w talent agency photographs. The highlight of this volume are the "Witness Interviews" with selected artists who passed through the show. Often, the features are with individuals who have not yet been exposed to the X-Files spotlight. Like Star Trek, X-Files has become a show in which we all want to know any new tidbit of information and this book sheds light on a "dark" corner of the X-Files mythos. Highly recommended!
It was wonderful........1999-02-21
It was a wonderful book. The detail was amazing
Informative and accurate.......1998-07-22
Of all the books about the actors and actresses on the show, this is the most comprehensive and accurate one I have read. It is informative and fun to read. If you want to learn about the guest stars that are normally left out of the other books, then this is the book for you.
A good book that has nothing to do with its title.......1998-03-12
Let me say that this is a great book. It is very well written. It provides a lot of excellent details -- It just doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the title! It should be titled "Beyond Duchovny and Anderson: The Supporting Actors of the X-Files." The book is chock full of interesting information about the supporting actors on The X-Files, but it has practically nothing on the characters they play. If you are truly looking for a book on the "mysterious characters" of the show, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you just want random facts about various actors who have appeared on the set of The X-Files, then you just might want to take a look at this book.

Thanks amazon for providing good book in fast and secure manner i appreciate it
The "Ooohhhhhh, now I get it" book.......2005-05-13
If you just want a clear-cut intro to PHP, this is the book to get. Meloni takes the basic concepts, and shows you how to use them to create a shopping cart (so you learn database interaction, how to send an email, and basic syntax). Perfect for newbies.
Good, but as it says, Essentials only.......2005-04-13
This book is well written, but I was expecting more contents.
Excellent Book.......2003-10-28
If you are new to PHP, this is the book to get. Dont go anywhere, this book is simply one of the best introductory books on computer programming i have ever bought. It makes PHP learning fast, fun and easy. It not just covers PHP alone but also covers Databases and teaches SQL from the ground up with code for almost all the known databases in the industry.
Thank you Julie Meloni, you are great.
Less is More.......2003-10-25
I'm a big fan of this book. I used the first edition to put a modest web commerce site up in about three weeks of spare time (see it at www.privategalaxy.com). Using only this book, I learned what I needed of how to use the freeware language PHP and the excellent freeware database MySQL (in fact I learned SQL from this book). And these two programs are a great combination supported by a large number of web hosting sites using Apache (an extremely common if not the most widely used server software).
I have just shy of a dozen other computer books--many of them are shovelware--full of glop because the publishers want thickness. And then there are some books where the authors seem to spend more time trying to show off how sophisticated they are than trying to explain things. This book has neither defect; its clear intent is to teach and it does so with economy and grace
Meloni is a solid technical writer. For those who like examples, there are lots of them (in fact a whole e-commerce site (no-I wrote mine from scratch) and there are compact appendices on the commands and functions you will actually use in the back. PHP is a language to get stuff done and this book is in the same spirit. But even supposing you want to use PHP to calculate fast Fourier transforms (heaven forbid!) this book is a good starter and supplimented by the free PHP web site, will get you there fast.
